Do not treat “private” as a yes-or-no label. An AI companion can keep chats hidden from other users while still processing message text on its servers, sending content to a language-model provider, retaining copies after you delete a visible conversation, or using some data to improve models. Evaluate the app’s current privacy policy, regional disclosures, terms, cookie policy, and in-app controls across the full data lifecycle before deciding what you are comfortable sharing.
What “private” should mean in an AI companion app
People usually ask whether an app can read their conversations, use them to train an AI, or delete them on request. Those questions describe different protections. A useful evaluation separates them instead of accepting a single “private chats” claim.
- Private from other users: your conversations are not displayed to another account or publicly exposed.
- Not used for advertising: message content is excluded from advertising or marketing. This does not automatically exclude service delivery, safety analysis, personalization, or model improvement.
- Not used for model training: chats are excluded from training or tuning specified models. The scope may be limited by region, account type, model, or date.
- Deleted after removal: deleting a chat or account removes the relevant copies from the systems covered by the policy. Backups, logs, abuse records, legal records, and vendor systems may follow different schedules.
- Inaccessible to the provider: the provider technically cannot read the content. This generally requires strong end-to-end encryption and a design that withholds decryption keys from the service. Encryption during transmission alone does not establish it.
Use the strongest definition that matters to you. If you are considering sharing a medical history, relationship details, credentials, financial information, or identifying documents, “not used for advertising” is not enough evidence that the material is inaccessible or unretained.

Start with the documents and settings that actually apply
Privacy language can differ by country, age, product, and date. Before evaluating an app, record the policy version or “last updated” date, your country or region, and whether you use the mobile app or website. Read these materials together:

- the main privacy policy;
- regional privacy notices or supplements;
- the cookie policy, especially for web use;
- terms of service, including content-licence clauses; and
- the current account and privacy settings shown in your own app.
An old help article can describe a control that has moved or changed. A setting label can also be narrower than the policy: “model improvement” might cover generative-model training but not search, recommendations, or safety systems. Capture the exact wording and date before relying on it.
Follow the chat through its complete data lifecycle
Work through the following stages in order. For every stage, write down what the provider says, what is optional, which vendors are involved, and what uncertainty remains.
1. Collection: identify every type of content
Look for more than typed messages. Policies may list text, voice recordings, photos, videos, uploaded files, profile fields, interests, preferences, device identifiers, network information, approximate location, usage events, and information inferred from how you interact with the companion.
Separate data needed to provide a reply from optional data. Voice input may require an audio file to be uploaded; a profile nickname may be optional; a device identifier may be collected automatically. If the policy uses broad wording such as “content you provide” or “information from your interactions,” determine whether that includes attachments and generated outputs.
- Does the service retain raw audio or only a transcription?
- Are photos and videos stored after the reply is generated?
- Are intimate preferences or inferred traits added to a persistent profile?
- Can you use the basic chat function without supplying optional profile details?
2. Purposes: distinguish reply generation from secondary uses
An app must generally process enough content to generate a response. That fact alone neither proves broad use nor rules it out. Find separate statements for:
- generating and delivering replies;
- personalizing the companion or maintaining memory;
- analytics and service-performance measurement;
- fraud, abuse, and safety detection;
- training or tuning generative models;
- improving search, recommendations, or classifiers;
- advertising and marketing; and
- legal compliance, dispute handling, and security investigations.
“We do not use conversations for advertising” answers only the advertising question. It does not answer whether conversations are used for model improvement, safety review, personalization, or legal retention.

3. Recipients: map every outside party
Find categories of recipients, not just a general statement that data may be “shared.” Common categories include cloud hosting companies, analytics services, customer-support systems, human moderation teams, payment processors, and third-party language-model providers.

A language-model vendor may receive conversation data to generate a reply. The important follow-up questions are whether that vendor may retain the data, use it to train its own models, restrict employee access, and delete or return information when the relationship ends. A provider’s promise about its own systems does not automatically cover a vendor with a different policy.
4. Training controls: test the scope of any opt-out
A meaningful opt-out should identify its location, eligible users, data covered, effective date, and remaining uses. “Turn off personalization” is not necessarily a training opt-out. “Do not use my chats for training” may still allow safety analysis or recommendation systems.
Check whether the control applies to previously collected content or only new content. Also check whether it covers text, images, voice, and generated conversations separately. If the policy says an opt-out is available only in a particular region, do not generalize it to all accounts.
5. Retention and deletion: compare categories, not one headline number
Look for separate periods for chat content, account identifiers, automatically collected data, analytics, abuse and safety records, backups, payment records, and legal records. “Delete account” may remove your account from the user interface while some records remain under a stated exception or schedule.

Ask five concrete questions:
- Does deleting an individual chat remove its server-side copy, or only hide it from your history?
- What happens to content already sent to language-model or analytics vendors?
- Are backups and disaster-recovery copies overwritten immediately or on a cycle?
- Can safety, fraud, or legal records be retained after account deletion?
- Will the provider confirm completion, and what exactly does that confirmation cover?
6. Security: read the technical claim precisely
These terms are not interchangeable:

Look for incident reporting, access-control detail, independent certifications, or audit reports. Treat a company’s policy description as a statement of intended practice, not proof that a live implementation matches it. No policy can guarantee that a service is “100% secure.”

7. Rights and geographic scope
Check whether you can request access, correction, export, deletion, objection, or withdrawal of consent, and how to submit each request. Eligibility and deadlines may depend on your location and the legal basis for processing. A provider may also retain information when required by law or needed for security, fraud prevention, or disputes.
Age rules matter too. A notice for adults may not describe processing for minors, and parental-consent requirements can change the applicable rights and collection practices. Confirm that the policy and controls shown to you match your country and account.
Two current policy examples—and what they do and do not show
These examples illustrate how to read claims; they are not a ranking of the services or an independent security audit.

The Replika Privacy Policy page was last updated May 27, 2026. It describes collection of account and profile information, messages and content—including text, voice, photos, and video—interests and preferences, device and network data, and usage data.
The policy says third-party AI language-model providers are used to generate replies. It states that conversation data, subject to data minimization and de-identification, is sent to those providers for that purpose; it also says the providers may not use the data to train their own AI models and must apply security measures and delete or return data when the service relationship ends. Those are the company’s published contractual and operational statements, not independent verification of vendor behavior.
The policy states that conversation content is not used for marketing or advertising and that advertising partners may receive limited information about website visitors. That distinction leaves other stated purposes—such as delivering replies, safety, personalization, or service analysis—separate from advertising.

Retention is divided by category. Messages and content may be processed for up to 60 days after contract termination for contract-performance purposes. Account information, financial records, and automatically collected personal data are retained for a minimum of 10 years after termination because of legal retention requirements. Analysis data is described as being deleted within one year from collection after the relevant analysis and anonymization process. None of these periods is a universal “chat deletion” deadline.
For security, the policy says, “All transmitted data are encrypted during transmission.” It also describes secure servers with layered controls including firewalls, role-based access controls, and passwords, while stating that no technology, transmission, or system can be guaranteed 100% secure. The policy does not establish end-to-end encryption, so encryption in transit should not be interpreted as provider inaccessibility.
The policy describes access, correction, deletion, consent withdrawal, and other rights that can depend on location and legal basis. It says users can delete accounts in settings and that deletion requests extend to service-provider data under contractual arrangements, while noting that legal obligations and other lawful grounds can limit some choices.
Character.AI (Character Technologies, Inc.)
Character.AI’s official “About our Model Training” page says it retains certain user-shared data to help train and improve its models and takes steps to reduce personal information in training datasets.
For users in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, the page describes this opt-out path in the app: Settings → Data & Privacy → “Improve the Model for Everyone.” On the web, it gives: Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Model Improvement → turn off “Improve the Model for Everyone.”
The page says, “Once you opt out, new content will not be used to train our generative AI models.” It also says that content may still be used to improve other service components, including search, recommendations, and safety classifiers. This is a regional, purpose-specific control; it should not be generalized to every user, every region, or every processing activity.

A policy-update notice said changes to the Privacy Policy and Terms of Service were scheduled to take effect August 27, 2025. The notice added detail about collection, use, and sharing, including targeted advertising, and directed users to regional privacy disclosures and a cookie policy. Check the currently applicable notice rather than assuming the same terms apply everywhere.

When comparing services, record the same fields and the policy date and geography. A uniform worksheet exposes gaps that marketing language hides.

Use “not stated” when a policy does not answer a field. An unfilled answer is a material uncertainty, not evidence that the app has the strongest protection.

- The policy groups all purposes under “improve our services” without identifying training, safety, analytics, or advertising separately.
- A training opt-out is available only in some countries, applies only to new content, or leaves broad uses in place.
- The app says chats are encrypted but does not distinguish transmission, storage, and end-to-end encryption.
- Deletion is described only as removing a conversation from your history, with no server, vendor, backup, or legal-retention explanation.
- Third-party language-model providers are named only as a category, with no stated limits on retention or training.
- The current settings do not match the policy’s instructions, or a linked help page has no update date.
- The provider makes an absolute “fully private” or “100% secure” promise without technical boundaries.
One red flag does not prove misuse. It tells you to limit disclosure until the missing detail is resolved.
A practical decision rule for sensitive conversations
After completing the worksheet, classify the app for the specific conversation you want to have:
- Clear and acceptable: collection, purposes, vendors, retention, security, and controls are sufficiently specific for your comfort level.
- Acceptable only with limits: ordinary, non-identifying conversation is reasonable, but you avoid information that could harm you if retained or disclosed.
- Not suitable for sensitive material: a material purpose, recipient, retention period, deletion behavior, or regional limitation is unknown or conflicts with your requirements.
When uncertainty remains, do not enter secrets, passwords, authentication codes, financial account details, government-identification numbers, precise addresses, medical records, or identifying details about another person. Disable optional voice, image, memory, personalization, or model-improvement features when the app provides those controls, but do not assume a toggle blocks every form of processing unless the policy says so.
Finally, revisit the decision when the provider changes its policy, introduces a new model, moves a setting, or changes the app’s region-specific notice. Privacy is a continuing assessment, not a one-time label.
What the available statements cannot prove
A policy review cannot establish that a live implementation exactly matches its text. It also cannot, by itself, show whether employees or contractors can access messages in circumstances the policy does not describe, whether deletion removes every operational and backup copy, or whether a vendor has independently audited the specific chat-processing claims. Treat published policies as important evidence of stated practice, not as a substitute for technical testing or an independent security audit.
Bottom line
An AI companion protects private chats only to the extent that its collection, purposes, recipients, training controls, retention, deletion process, security design, and user rights match your privacy requirements. “Not used for advertising,” encryption in transit, or a disappearing chat screen answers only one narrow part of that test. Use the current regional policy and settings, document what remains uncertain, and keep highly sensitive information out of any service whose limits you cannot verify.
