Follow a new game when the available evidence matches what you want to play—not simply because its setting, trailer, or wishlist count is exciting. The most reliable order is to identify the actual play promise, inspect representative gameplay, try a demo when possible, check dated development updates, and keep your financial commitment proportional to what is still unknown.
A free follow or wishlist is a reminder. It is not a quality score, a sales forecast, or proof that the finished game will suit you. If there is no representative gameplay yet, waiting is a rational decision rather than a negative verdict.
What “worth following” should mean
Before launch, you usually cannot establish whether an unreleased game will be polished, stable, popular, or completed exactly as announced. You can establish whether the evidence is becoming strong enough for your attention and, separately, whether it justifies spending money before release.

- Follow: keep track of announcements, demos, release changes, and launch availability.
- Wishlist: use a platform reminder and, on Steam, potentially receive launch or qualifying-discount email notifications.
- Buy early: accept financial and product risk in exchange for playing sooner.
A game can be worth following while still being a poor preorder. Conversely, a title can have impressive marketing but fail your personal preferences once you play it.

Start with the game’s play promise, not its setting
Write one sentence describing what you repeatedly do as a player. “Explore a flooded city” is a setting. “Sneak through flooded districts, choose routes, manage noise, and extract before patrols close in” is a play promise. The second description gives you something concrete to evaluate.
Extract the basic facts
Read the current official store page and record:
- Genre and subgenre.
- Player perspective: first-person, third-person, top-down, side-scrolling, or another view.
- Core actions: fighting, building, trading, solving puzzles, managing a team, racing, social interaction, or another repeated activity.
- Solo, cooperative, competitive, or always-online requirements.
- Supported platforms and whether cross-play or cross-progression is stated.
- Planned release window, Early Access status, and any announced edition restrictions.
- The distinctive hook and which features are described as available now versus planned.
Then compare the written description with screenshots and video. A mismatch matters. If the page emphasizes systemic stealth but every image shows combat, or promises deep construction without showing the construction interface, mark that feature as unverified rather than assuming it will be present.
Test personal fit before judging quality
Use your own preferences as a filter. Ask whether the advertised pace, difficulty, camera, session length, input method, accessibility options, and multiplayer requirements fit how you play. A technically excellent game can still be the wrong game for someone who dislikes time pressure, repetitive progression, first-person motion, or online matchmaking.

Inspect footage for playable evidence
A cinematic trailer can establish tone, characters, and premise. It rarely establishes how the game feels after the novelty wears off. Look for footage in which a player makes decisions, receives feedback, and repeats the central loop.
What to look for in a video
- Decision density: Can you see choices about movement, equipment, resources, targets, routes, or dialogue?
- Interaction: Are the systems named in the description actually shown in use?
- Loop visibility: Can you identify what happens between objectives—preparation, execution, reward, and the next challenge?
- Representativeness: Does the footage show ordinary play, or only a curated cinematic set piece?
- Readability: Can you understand health, objectives, enemies, resources, and feedback without relying on a narrator’s promises?
- Conditions: Is the build identified, and are platform, resolution, frame-rate, or controller details disclosed?
Do not treat a polished trailer as evidence of final performance, complete feature coverage, or bug-free launch. Promotional footage is selected to persuade; it is not a neutral sample.
What a prediction paper can—and cannot—tell you
A 2018 paper by Vishal Batchu, Varshit Battu, Murali Krishna Reddy, and Radhika Mamidi modeled game scores from trailers and summaries. Adding summaries improved accuracy by over 5% compared with trailer-only input in that paper’s experiments. The authors also describe irrelevant imagery and dataset limitations. That result supports using more than visuals when assessing a pitch; it does not produce a dependable score for one unreleased game or replace hands-on play. Read the 2018 paper.

Give a playable demo the most weight
A demo is the first direct test of controls, pacing, interface, sound, accessibility, and the core loop. Play it with specific questions in mind: Do movement and aiming feel controllable? Is the objective clear? Does the reward structure make you want another attempt? Are menus, text, and subtitles readable on your setup?
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use events such as Steam Next Fest correctly
Steam Next Fest is organized around playable demos and real-time player feedback. Its purpose makes it a useful opportunity to sample several games rather than rely on trailer impressions. Valve’s Steam Next Fest documentation explains the event context.
Keep the sample’s limits in view. A short demo may omit progression, later difficulty, multiplayer, performance-heavy areas, or the systems that determine long-term enjoyment. Record what you actually experienced and what remains untested.
Do not confuse build review with quality assurance
Valve says Steam’s demo build review checks that a demo runs and includes the features promised for that demo, but “it is not a full QA process.” The review does not establish that the game is bug-free. See the Steam Next Fest build-review guidance.
When a demo fails, distinguish a fixable defect from a failed design fit. A crash on your hardware is a technical warning; a stable demo whose combat you dislike is useful information about the game itself. Check whether a later build or developer note addresses technical problems, but do not assume every issue will be fixed.
Evaluate development communication over time
One announcement proves little. A sequence of dated, specific updates reveals whether the team distinguishes current functionality from plans and whether it responds to problems with concrete information.

Evidence that improves confidence
- Patch notes identify what changed, what remains broken, and which build or platform is affected.
- Demonstrations show the same systems described on the store page rather than continually introducing unrelated promises.
- Roadmaps label future work as planned and avoid presenting it as delivered.
- Release-window changes are explained with a reason and a revised expectation.
- Known issues, system requirements, accessibility details, and multiplayer dependencies are stated plainly.
Signals that require patience
Infrequent communication alone does not prove that development is failing. A small team may have limited time for community updates, and a quiet period can precede a major reveal. Treat silence as missing evidence, not as proof of either success or collapse. Revisit your decision when a new build, demo, announcement, or delay supplies information.
Understand Early Access and pre-purchase risk
Early Access means judging the current build
Early Access is a purchase of a playable, unfinished product, not a guaranteed reservation for a future vision. Valve tells developers that customers should buy based on the current state because planned additions may not happen. Its documentation also distinguishes Early Access, where a playable product is delivered at purchase, from a pre-purchase that is delivered later. Read Valve’s Early Access guidance.
Before choosing Early Access, check the current build’s loop, stability, content volume, save behavior, multiplayer population, and update cadence. Decide whether you would be satisfied if development stopped with the features available today. Future roadmaps can inform your interest, but they should not be the reason you buy.
Pre-purchase removes your chance to evaluate the release
Valve describes pre-purchase as risky and says it supports pre-purchase campaigns only rarely for established partners with a proven Steam track record. It also cautions that most Steam pre-purchase campaigns do not bring much sales and recommends saving excitement for when customers can play. Read the Steam pre-purchase documentation.
For an individual player, ask what you gain by paying before launch: guaranteed access to a scarce physical item, a clearly defined bonus you genuinely value, or simply earlier access to a game you already understand. If the answer is only fear of missing out, waiting preserves your information and your money.
Use wishlists as reminders, never as ratings
A wishlist is a low-commitment tracking tool. On Steam, Valve states: “With a few exceptions like the Popular Upcoming tab, wishlists are not a factor in your game’s algorithmic visibility on Steam.” Wishlisted customers may receive emails at launch or when a qualifying discount is applied; the documentation specifies a discount of 20% or greater. Check Steam’s current visibility guidance.

Those rules do not make a wishlist count a quality measure. Public totals are often unavailable, audiences differ, and a count says nothing about whether the game’s controls, pace, difficulty, or platform support fit you. There is no dependable universal wishlist threshold that establishes that a new IP is worth following.

When choosing among multiple titles, apply identical questions rather than allowing the loudest marketing campaign to set the standard.
| Axis | Strong evidence | Weak evidence | Your decision question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gameplay clarity | You can describe the repeated player actions and see them in ordinary footage or a demo. | The pitch relies on setting, characters, or cinematic scenes. | Would I enjoy this loop for several sessions? |
| Evidence quality | A representative demo or extended gameplay is available, with build or platform context. | Only a short trailer, concept art, or undated promises are available. | What important claim remains untested? |
| Personal fit | Genre, pace, perspective, controls, accessibility, platform, and multiplayer model match your needs. | One attractive feature overshadows several known mismatches. | Would I choose this if the brand-new setting were removed? |
| Development transparency | Dated updates separate shipped features from planned work and explain changes. | Roadmaps present hypothetical additions as if they are guaranteed. | Can I tell what exists today? |
| Commitment risk | You can follow or wishlist while waiting for more evidence. | You are asked to pay before representative play is available. | What do I lose by waiting? |
Use the table to expose missing information, not to generate a fake numerical prediction. A game with excellent personal fit but little evidence may be worth following and waiting on. A game with abundant footage but a poor platform or multiplayer fit is easy to remove from your list.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Build a practical pre-launch checklist
Complete this checklist for each game, using “confirmed,” “partly shown,” or “unknown” rather than guessing:
- Write the one-sentence play promise.
- List the genre, perspective, core actions, modes, platforms, and online requirements.
- Mark each major feature as shown in gameplay, shown only in a cinematic, described but unseen, or absent.
- Watch enough ordinary gameplay to identify a complete loop from objective to reward.
- Play the demo, if available, and record controls, pacing, readability, performance, and one reason you would replay it.
- Check the date and scope of the latest developer update, patch note, or demonstration.
- Separate current features from roadmap items and promotional bonuses.
- Decide whether a wishlist or follow gives you all the benefit you need for now.
- If considering Early Access, ask whether the current build alone is worth the price.
- If considering pre-purchase, write down the specific benefit and the information you would gain by waiting.
Choose among follow, wait, buy, or skip
Follow or wishlist
Choose this when the core idea fits your tastes, but one or more important questions remain unanswered. This is especially appropriate when no representative gameplay exists or a demo is too narrow to assess the full loop.
Wait for a larger demo or launch reviews
Choose this when footage is promising but controls, performance, progression, multiplayer population, or late-game variety are still unknown. Waiting is also sensible when the release window has changed repeatedly and the new build has not been demonstrated.

Desk wire organizer is also suitable for use in the kitchen and outdoors.
- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
Buy Early Access
Choose this only when the current playable state—not the roadmap—already provides the experience you want, and you accept unfinished content, bugs, balance changes, and the possibility that planned additions will not arrive.
Pre-purchase
Choose this rarely and deliberately. It should be based on evidence you have already assessed and a concrete benefit that matters to you, not on a wishlist count, cinematic trailer, or fear of missing out.
Stop following
Stop when repeated evidence shows a fundamental mismatch: the loop is not enjoyable, required multiplayer is unavailable in your region or schedule, the platform is unsupported, or the current build contradicts the feature that attracted you. You do not need to prove that the game is objectively bad to remove it from your list.
What broader popularity signals can and cannot predict
Studies of Steam popularity have found associations with factors such as price, game size, supported languages, release date, and genre. Those findings concern early post-release popularity, not a dependable pre-launch verdict for one new IP. Read “Predicting the Popularity of Games on Steam”.
Accordingly, avoid turning store visibility, follower counts, press attention, or social-media activity into a personal quality forecast. They can help you discover information, but they cannot answer whether you will enjoy the repeated actions in the game.
The bottom-line test
A new video game IP is worth following before launch when its specific play promise appeals to you and the available evidence is becoming more concrete: representative gameplay agrees with the description, a demo answers practical questions, and dated communication distinguishes what exists from what is planned. Keep following free, treat wishlists as reminders, and delay payment until the current product—not an imagined future—meets your standard.
