To judge whether a cryptocurrency purchase can be filled without a large price move, assess the exact token pair, venue or pool, and size of the order you plan to place. Check the bid-ask spread and executable depth, then estimate the average fill and price impact for that order. Treat 24-hour volume as background information—not proof that you can trade at a reasonable price. Liquidity changes, so recheck near execution.
What token liquidity tells you—and what it does not
Liquidity describes how readily an asset can be bought or sold without substantially changing its price. For a buyer, the practical question is not whether a token is “liquid” in the abstract. It is what price and costs a particular purchase would face in a particular market at a particular time.
A token can have active trading on one exchange or trading pair and little usable liquidity on another. A price shown on a chart is not an offer to sell you the amount you want: it may reflect the last trade, while the next available asks are at higher prices. Crypto markets are fragmented across exchanges, assets, and pairs, as S&P Global explains in its analysis of crypto-asset trading liquidity.

- Spread is the gap between the best displayed buying and selling prices.
- Depth is the amount that could be executed within a stated price range around the current quote.
- Price impact estimates how much the planned order itself moves the execution price relative to a reference price.
- Slippage is the difference between the expected and actual execution outcome; the actual result can differ from an estimate as conditions change.
These measures answer different questions. A narrow spread does not mean there is a lot available behind the best quote, and a large volume figure does not tell you the price at which your order would fill.
Identify the exact market before comparing liquidity
Write down what you intend to buy and where you intend to buy it before looking at liquidity metrics. For a centralized exchange, identify the exchange and exact pair, such as TOKEN/USDT. For a decentralized exchange, identify the chain, token contract, exact pool, and paired asset. Confirm the token identity rather than relying on a ticker alone.
Also specify the purchase size and the currency or asset in which you want to measure it. A TOKEN/USDT book is not interchangeable with TOKEN/USD, and a pool on one chain is not the same market as a pool on another. If you compare venues, compare the same asset exposure and the same intended trade size; otherwise, a difference in the numbers may reflect different markets rather than better execution.
S&P Global’s report includes historical analysis covering January 1, 2023, through February 28, 2025, using selected Binance and Uniswap v3 markets. Those observations describe the stated sample and period, not a live reading or a benchmark that can be applied to any token today.
How to evaluate a centralized-exchange order book
1. Record the best bid and ask
The bid is the highest displayed price a buyer is offering; the ask is the lowest displayed price a seller is requesting. The quoted spread is:

spread = best ask − best bid
Because a dollar-sized spread means different things for tokens at different price levels, normalize it using the midpoint:
midpoint = (best bid + best ask) ÷ 2spread percentage = (best ask − best bid) ÷ midpoint × 100
Record the time and venue with the quote. A spread is a snapshot of the visible best prices, not a promise that those prices will still be available when you submit an order.
2. Look beyond the top quote
Inspect cumulative depth on both sides of the order book: bids show potential buying interest, while asks show potential selling interest. For a purchase, the ask side is the immediate source of displayed offers, but bid depth can still help you understand how the market is balanced. State the price band whenever you quote a depth figure. A common comparison is depth within 1% of the midpoint; S&P Global defines 1% market depth as executable volume within that range and notes that shallow depth makes a large trade more likely to affect price.
A best ask may look attractive even if only a small amount is available there. If the intended purchase exceeds that amount, the remainder may be available only at higher asks. Check the cumulative value available at several price levels rather than treating the first row as the whole market. Where the interface offers depth in token units and in quote-currency value, make sure you use the units that correspond to your planned order.

3. Estimate the average fill for your order size
Use the exchange’s order preview or a market-depth calculator, if available, to estimate the average price for the amount you plan to buy. A book-walking estimate adds the cost of the offers needed to fill the entire order, level by level. Include trading fees in the total cost. Then compare the estimated average execution price with the midpoint or another clearly stated reference quote.
For example, if an illustrative order-book estimate gives an average fill of 10.20 units of quote currency per token and the midpoint is 10.00, the estimated difference relative to midpoint is 2%. This is a made-up example to show the calculation, not a market reading or a recommended tolerance. The important value is the estimate for your intended order in the market you will actually use.
Do not treat an estimate as a guaranteed fill. Displayed orders can change or disappear, and liquidity may be less stable during volatile conditions. Kraken’s overview identifies order-book stability and bid-ask imbalance as additional factors to consider alongside spread and depth.
How to assess a decentralized exchange pool
Confirm the token, chain, and pool
For a decentralized exchange (DEX), verify the token contract and network, then identify the exact pool and paired asset used for the swap. Tokens can have similar names or tickers, and a quote for a different contract or chain does not establish liquidity for the asset you mean to buy.
Pool balances are part of the liquidity picture, but the pool’s total size alone does not tell you what your swap will cost. The quote for your particular input size is more useful because execution depends on the pool’s state and pricing mechanics. Request or simulate the swap for the planned amount and inspect the estimated tokens received, price impact, fees, and applicable network costs before confirming.

Use the actual swap estimate
Compare the swap’s estimated outcome with a clearly identified reference price, and assess whether the estimated price impact is acceptable for your order. A larger trade relative to the pool can produce a more substantial price deviation. If you are comparing pools, quote the same input amount and asset pair under similar conditions; comparing pool balances alone can conceal differences in the execution result.
Be precise about protocol versions. Uniswap’s cited pool documentation covers v2: it explains that a v2 pool is a smart-contract trading venue for a token pair, and that someone must seed the pool with an initial deposit of each token before it can facilitate trades. That description should not be assumed to explain every automated market maker (AMM) design; the documentation points readers to v4 as current documentation.

The right comparison is not “exchange versus DEX” in general. Compare the actual execution evidence for the markets you can access: the same intended purchase size, the estimated average outcome, and fees and costs relevant to that route.

Trading volume records activity that has already happened. It does not show how much is currently available at prices near the quote, or how much your order would move the price. A market can report substantial volume and still have a wide spread or shallow depth at the moment you want to buy.

Reported volume also deserves scrutiny. Kraken warns that fabricated prints or wash trading—matched or offsetting trades that inflate activity—can create reported volume without genuine liquidity. Volume can also be fragmented across venues and pairs, so an aggregate or token-wide figure may not describe the specific market you plan to use.

Use volume as context: it can help you see whether a market has traded recently and consistently, but corroborate it with a live spread, depth at stated price bands, and an estimate for your order size. Market capitalization, a chart, or a 24-hour-volume ranking is not a substitute for those checks.
A practical checklist before placing the order
- Specify the trade. Note the token contract or asset, chain if applicable, exact pair and venue or pool, and planned purchase size.
- Capture the current quote. For an order book, record the best bid and ask and calculate midpoint and spread percentage. For a pool, obtain a quote for the exact swap.
- Check executable liquidity. Review cumulative order-book depth at stated bands such as 1% from midpoint, or inspect the pool’s current state together with the swap estimate.
- Model the full order. Estimate the average execution price and price impact for the intended amount, accounting for exchange or pool fees and relevant network costs.
- Compare viable alternatives consistently. Use the same order size and, as far as possible, the same asset pair and time window. Compare spread, depth, estimated outcome, costs, and stability—not just reported volume.
- Recheck just before execution. Refresh the order book or swap quote. If the available depth or estimate has changed materially, reassess rather than relying on an earlier screenshot.
There is no universal minimum volume, maximum spread, or sufficient-depth threshold established by the cited sources. The trade size, market, and buyer’s tolerance determine whether the estimated cost is acceptable. Set that tolerance before placing an order instead of treating one number as a safety guarantee.
Disclosure rules and the limits of displayed data
In the European Union, MiCA Article 76 applies transparency requirements to crypto-asset service providers operating covered trading platforms. ESMA’s Article 76 text says covered platforms must make advertised bid and ask prices and the depth of trading interests at those prices public continuously during trading hours; transaction price, volume, and time must be made public as close to real time as technically possible. This is an EU requirement for platforms within the provision’s scope, not a statement that every exchange worldwide provides identical data.

The available evidence is a view of conditions, not a commitment about what the market will do next.
Common evaluation mistakes
- Using a token-wide liquidity label. A token can have very different conditions across pairs, exchanges, chains, and pools. Assess the exact route you intend to use.
- Assuming the chart price is executable. The chart may show a last trade, not the average price available for your order.
- Stopping at the best bid and ask. The top quote says nothing by itself about how much sits behind it. Inspect cumulative depth and model the complete order.
- Treating reported volume as current supply. Volume is historical activity; check live execution evidence and consider the possibility of wash trading.
- Comparing unlike markets. Different quote assets, pairs, chains, order sizes, or measurement times make a weak comparison.
- Assuming a DEX pool’s aggregate balance predicts your result. Get a quote for the exact swap amount against the precise pool.
- Relying on a stale snapshot. Volatility, external events, and venue conditions can change depth and order-book stability; refresh close to the trade.
How to make the final decision
Choose the market only after you can answer these questions for the intended order: What is the spread or swap quote? How much is executable near the reference price? What average fill and price impact does the full order imply after relevant costs? Is the evidence current, and is the market precisely the pair, venue, or pool you intend to use?
If you cannot get a credible size-specific estimate, the available data does not establish that the purchase will execute near the displayed price. You can reassess the route or the order size, or wait for conditions to change. No single volume figure or liquidity score can remove that uncertainty.
