Estimate a Pokémon card product’s resale value from recent completed sales for the exact item, then subtract every selling and fulfillment cost. Your downside is the all-in purchase cost minus that realistic net proceeds figure—not the difference between your purchase price and an optimistic listing.
Before buying, match the expansion, product family, edition, language, sealed condition and region; verify that enough recent sales exist; calculate marketplace fees and shipping; and decide whether you can accept a delayed sale or a lower price. Historical sales are evidence, not a promise of future appreciation or liquidity.
Start with the number that matters: net proceeds
A product can appear profitable at the shelf price and still lose money after fees, postage, packing, taxes and the discount needed to attract a buyer. Use two separate calculations:
Estimated net resale proceeds = plausible completed-sale price − selling fees − shipping and packing − other sale costs.
#1 Best Overall
- The Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution—Perfect Order Elite Trainer Box includes 9 Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution—Perfect Order booster packs, 1 full-art foil promo card featuring Tyrunt, and 65 card sleeves.
- This also comes with 40 Pokémon TCG Energy cards, a player’s guide to the Mega Evolution—Perfect Order expansion, and 6 damage-counter dice.
- You will also receive a competition-legal coin-flip die, a plastic coin, and a collector’s box to hold everything, with 6 dividers to keep it organized.
- And you will also find a code card for Pokémon Trading Card Game Live.
Estimated downside at purchase = total purchase cost − estimated net resale proceeds.
Total purchase cost includes the item price, sales tax, inbound shipping and any required delivery or handling charge. If the downside is positive, you would lose that amount under the price and cost assumptions you selected. If the result is negative, the calculation shows a potential surplus, but it still does not establish that a buyer will appear at that price.
Use a range rather than one precise forecast. A conservative case can use a lower recent completed sale, a base case can use a representative middle value, and an optimistic case can use a stronger but still comparable result. Treat the optimistic case as an upside scenario, not as the amount you should expect.
Identify the exact product before looking at prices
“Pokémon card product” is too broad for a reliable comparison. Sealed-market references separate standard Elite Trainer Boxes (ETBs) from Pokémon Center ETBs, and they track booster bundles, conventional booster boxes and collection products separately. A sale for one family is not automatically a valid comp for another.
| Identity detail | What to confirm | Why it changes the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Expansion or set | Exact set name and, where relevant, release wave | Different sets have different contents, print runs, demand and sale histories. |
| Product family | Standard ETB, Pokémon Center ETB, booster bundle, booster box, collection box or another format | Packaging, contents and collector demand differ even when products share an expansion. |
| Edition or channel | Retail edition, Pokémon Center edition, special release or regional version | Edition-specific extras and scarcity can make prices non-interchangeable. |
| Language and region | English, Japanese or another language; country or market where you will sell | Buyer pools, prices, shipping and fees vary by language and geography. |
| Condition | Factory sealed, opened, damaged, dented, torn or otherwise imperfect packaging | Sealed collectors may pay materially different amounts for damaged packaging. |
| Unit count | Single item, multipack, case or bundle | A case sale cannot be compared directly with a single-box sale without a per-unit adjustment. |
Record identifying details from the product label, barcode, listing title and photographs. Keep a screenshot or note of the exact edition and language so that a later price check does not silently drift to a similar-looking item.
Use completed sales, not asking prices
An active listing shows what a seller wants, not what a buyer paid. A TCGplayer editorial guide on sealed products specifically warns against using the lowest active eBay listing as a comparable sale; in one sealed booster-box case, the two most recent sales were materially below that lowest active listing.
eBay’s trading-card Price Guide is built around completed-sale information and can show a median sold price, a sold-price range and recent transactions. eBay says the guide is updated daily, while also warning that actual prices vary with condition, timing, demand and other market factors. Use the guide as a current reference, not a guaranteed exit price.

It also notes that a recent feed check can return an older observation when few sales exist. A stale observation or a very small transaction count should lower your confidence even if the displayed price looks attractive. Its cited snapshot covers data through October 5, 2026; that date is a cutoff for the observations, not a projection of returns.

Build a comparable-sales set
- Search the exact identity. Include the expansion, product family, edition, language and “sealed” status in your search terms.
- Filter to completed or sold transactions. Exclude active listings, unsold auctions and listings whose final condition cannot be verified.
- Inspect each sale. Check photographs, quantity, damage, included accessories, shipping terms and whether the title describes the same edition.
- Record dates and prices. Note the sale date, item price, shipping charged, marketplace and any visible condition issue.
- Remove mismatches. Drop sales for a different language, special edition, damaged package, bundle size or product family.
- Assess recency and count. Several recent, closely matching transactions provide stronger evidence than one old sale.
Do not automatically choose the lowest sold price or the median. First decide whether each transaction is genuinely comparable. A low sale caused by obvious damage may understate a clean sealed item; a high sale with unusual extras may overstate it.
Normalize each sale before comparing it
Comparable-sale prices often hide different cost and condition assumptions. Normalize the observations so that you are comparing the amount a buyer paid for a similar item, not unrelated listing formats.
- Condition: Separate clean factory seals from dents, tears, crushed corners, sun fading or opened packaging.
- Shipping: Record whether the displayed price excludes shipping. A buyer may pay a higher total amount while the seller incurs postage separately.
- Quantity: Divide a multipack or case price only when every unit is equivalent and the market actually buys units separately.
- Edition: Keep standard and Pokémon Center ETBs in separate groups, even when the expansion name is identical.
- Language: Do not blend English and Japanese sales, or one regional release with another, unless you have evidence that buyers treat them as interchangeable.
- Timing: Mark release-week sales, holiday spikes and unusually news-driven transactions. Timing can affect demand and price.
- Marketplace: A sale on one platform may not produce the same net amount on another because fee schedules, shipping expectations and buyer pools differ.
If only one or two close matches exist, report the uncertainty explicitly in your notes. Thin evidence is a reason to demand a larger margin of safety, not a reason to treat the highest observation as normal.
Calculate your all-in purchase cost
Use the invoice amount you will actually pay, not just the shelf or listing price.
| Entry-cost component | Include when applicable |
|---|---|
| Item price | Advertised price for the exact edition and quantity. |
| Sales tax or VAT | Tax charged in your delivery jurisdiction. |
| Inbound shipping | Postage, handling or delivery fees paid to receive the product. |
| Payment or buying fees | Any nonrefundable fee charged by the checkout method. |
| Storage and protection | Use only if you incur a real, sale-related cost such as protective packaging or paid storage. |
Add these amounts to produce the break-even basis for your purchase. If you receive a temporary coupon or loyalty credit, record whether it is genuinely available for this transaction and whether it changes your cash outlay or merely shifts value from another purchase.
Subtract the real costs of selling
Marketplace fees can apply to more than the item price. eBay’s US fee description says the final value fee depends on the category and seller or Store context, and that the calculation can include the item price, shipping collected from the buyer and other applicable charges. The cited schedule lists 13.25% plus $0.40 per order for the specified non-Store Collectible Card Games category. That is not a universal rate: verify the current rate for your account, category, country and listing terms before using it.
Your exit-cost checklist should include:
- Marketplace final-value or transaction fee, including any fixed per-order amount.
- Payment-processing, promoted-listing or optional service charges that you choose to incur.
- Postage, insurance and packing materials for the outbound shipment.
- Refund, return or damage exposure that you reasonably expect to reserve for.
- Taxes or reporting costs that apply to your situation and are not already reflected in the marketplace calculation.
For a platform that charges a percentage on the buyer’s shipping payment, calculate the fee base exactly as that platform defines it. Do not subtract a percentage from the item price alone and assume the result is accurate.

| Illustrative input | Amount |
|---|---|
| Purchase price | $100.00 |
| Inbound tax and shipping | $13.00 |
| Total purchase cost | $113.00 |
| Sale price received from buyer | $130.00 |
| Shipping charged to buyer | $8.00 |
| Illustrative eBay US fee base (item plus shipping) | $138.00 |
| 13.25% fee plus $0.40 | $18.69 |
| Postage and packing paid by seller | $8.00 |
| Estimated net resale proceeds | $111.31 |
| Estimated downside | $1.69 |
The fee in this illustration is calculated as 13.25% of $138 plus $0.40, rounded to cents. The shipping payment collected from the buyer is included in the fee base and then offset by the seller’s $8 postage and packing cost. Your platform’s current rules may produce a different result.
Run a range of outcomes
| Scenario | Sale price | Illustrative net proceeds | Downside versus $113 entry |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lower comparable outcome | $110 | $93.96 | $19.04 loss |
| Illustrative middle outcome | $130 | $111.31 | $1.69 loss |
| Stronger comparable outcome | $150 | $128.66 | $15.66 surplus |
These scenario results use the same illustrative $8 buyer shipping, 13.25% plus $0.40 fee and $8 fulfillment cost. Replace every figure with your own current evidence. If the lower credible outcome creates a loss you would not accept, the purchase does not meet your risk requirement even if the stronger outcome looks appealing.
Evaluate downside risk beyond the spreadsheet
Price is only one risk. A product can have a favorable historical price and still be difficult to exit.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Risk | What to check | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Price risk | Spread between recent comparable sales and the direction of newer observations | Recent sales are falling or vary widely without an identifiable reason. |
| Liquidity risk | Number and recency of close sales | Only one old transaction supports the displayed price. |
| Condition risk | Ability to keep the seal and packaging saleable | Storage exposes the box to heat, moisture, sunlight or crushing. |
| Fee risk | Current account-specific fee schedule and chargeable amount | You are using a generic percentage or an old fee page. |
| Fulfillment risk | Safe packing, tracking, insurance and return handling | One damaged shipment would erase the expected margin. |
| Timing risk | How long you can hold the item before selling | You need cash by a fixed date or cannot wait for a buyer. |
| Demand risk | Whether buyers value this exact edition and language | Interest is concentrated in a different product family or region. |
Liquidity is not the same as a high price. A sale that eventually clears at your target amount may still be a poor fit if it takes months, requires repeated relisting or forces a discount to meet your deadline.
Compare two products on the same axes
When choosing between products, do not rank them on an unsupported appreciation story. No product-specific, independently validated return statistic is established here. Compare the evidence and the consequences of being wrong.
| Axis | Record for each product | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Set, product family, edition, language, sealed condition and unit count | Are the two items genuinely comparable, or should they be analyzed separately? |
| Observed resale evidence | Completed-sale prices, dates, transaction count and match quality | Which product has the stronger, more recent evidence? |
| Entry price | Item price plus tax and inbound shipping | Which requires less capital at risk? |
| Exit costs | Marketplace fee, postage, packing and other sale costs | Which retains more of each sale dollar? |
| Liquidity and confidence | How quickly comparable items sold and how stale the observations are | Can you tolerate a slow or uncertain exit? |
| Personal downside tolerance | Maximum acceptable loss and holding period | Would you still be satisfied if resale is delayed or below the middle scenario? |
A lower-priced product with frequent, closely matched sales can suit a cautious buyer better than a higher-priced product supported by a single exceptional transaction. That is a liquidity and confidence judgment, not a claim that one product will appreciate more.

- Write the identity. Copy the exact expansion, product family, edition, language, condition and quantity into your notes.
- Set your acquisition total. Add price, tax, inbound shipping and any nonrefundable buying cost.
- Collect recent sold comps. Use eBay’s completed-sale information and sealed-product sales history where available; ignore active asking prices.
- Check every match. Remove different editions, languages, quantities, damaged packages and listings with unclear contents.
- Record evidence quality. Count close transactions, note their dates and flag stale or unusually sparse data.
- Verify selling fees. Open the current fee schedule for the marketplace, country, seller account and category you will actually use.
- Estimate fulfillment. Price a box, protective materials, postage, tracking and insurance appropriate for the item’s value.
- Calculate three outcomes. Use conservative, middle and stronger plausible sale prices, then compute net proceeds and downside for each.
- Apply your holding-period test. Ask whether you can keep the item safely and leave the money invested if a buyer does not appear quickly.
- Set a walk-away rule. Do not buy when the conservative case exceeds your acceptable loss or when the evidence is too thin to support a range.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using the lowest active listing as a “market price”
Correction: Use completed transactions and record the sale dates. An unsold listing proves only that someone asked for that amount.
Blending different ETB editions
Correction: Keep standard ETBs and Pokémon Center ETBs in separate datasets, and name the expansion in every note.

Ignoring tax and inbound shipping
Correction: Treat the checkout total as your cost basis. A small apparent margin can disappear before you list the item.
Applying a generic fee percentage
Correction: Verify the current rate for your country, category, account and Store status. The cited 13.25% plus $0.40 US example is conditional, not universal.
Assuming a daily-updated guide is a guarantee
Correction: Use the guide for current observations, then account for condition, timing, demand and other factors that can change the realized price.

Correction: Lower your confidence, widen the downside range and require a larger margin of safety—or wait for more comparable transactions.
Planning around appreciation you cannot document
Correction: Base the decision on observed net resale economics and your tolerance for loss. Do not assign an expected return without product-specific evidence.
When the evidence is too weak to buy
Pause the purchase when you cannot identify the exact edition, when only active listings are visible, when comparable sales are old or extremely sparse, or when fees and shipping consume most of the apparent margin. Also pause if the item would need to sell at the highest observed price merely to break even. In those cases, the uncertainty itself is a downside, even if the displayed market price is high.
Recheck volatile inputs immediately before purchasing and again before listing. Sealed-market observations and marketplace fees change, and a historical sale does not guarantee a future buyer at the same amount.
