A conference pitch is a screening conversation, not an investment case. Use the meeting to test the customer problem, first market, evidence of demand, product advantage, team, financing need and proposed terms. Record precise claims and promised evidence, then verify them through customer references, company records, financial information and legal review before deciding.
The most useful rule is simple: treat enthusiasm as a lead and evidence as the basis for a decision. The UK Government’s investor guidance puts it plainly: “Ideas are easy to pitch; evidence is harder to dispute.”
What a conference meeting can—and cannot—tell you
Technology conferences compress a company’s story into a few minutes. That is useful for finding opportunities, but it creates predictable errors: a polished demo can obscure a weak customer need, a large total-addressable-market (TAM) number can conceal an implausible sales plan, and a confident forecast can be mistaken for traction.
Your objective at the event is to decide whether a startup merits a structured follow-up. You are not trying to establish a valuation, prove an exit, or complete legal diligence in a hallway. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) describes early-stage investing as risky because a company may depend on a new product or service finding a market, private-company valuation is difficult, and private businesses generally provide less public reporting than listed companies. Read the SEC’s early-stage investor guidance for the U.S. context, while remembering that offering rules and investor eligibility vary by jurisdiction and deal structure: SEC early-stage investor guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
At the conference, leave with three things: a clear statement of the customer and problem, a dated list of claims and metrics, and an agreed next step for receiving evidence. Everything else belongs in follow-up diligence.
Run a disciplined conference screen
Ask permission to take notes and request a follow-up contact. Keep questions conversational, but cover the same core areas for every company so that pitch quality does not become a proxy for investment quality.
1. Customer problem and urgency
Start with the customer, not the technology. Ask:
- Who experiences the problem, and who approves or pays for a solution?
- How costly, frequent or urgent is the problem?
- What do customers use today, including spreadsheets, internal staff or a competing product?
- What customer research supports the founder’s description?
- Is the product a must-have or a nice-to-have, and what measurable result does it create?
A credible answer identifies a reachable buyer and a specific pain rather than describing “everyone” as a customer. The UK Government pitch template recommends explaining the problem and solution in customer terms and connecting claims to user or market research: UK Government investor pitch template.
2. Product, alternatives and differentiation
Ask the founder to show what the product does, how it is delivered and how the company makes money. Then ask why a customer would switch from the current alternative. Look for a focused advantage—better economics, performance, workflow or access—not a long feature list.
Potential defenses include intellectual property, lower costs, switching costs, proprietary data, distribution access or regulatory barriers. At the meeting, these are claims to record, not facts to accept. Later, verify ownership, enforceability and whether customers actually value the claimed barrier.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
3. Initial market and route to customers
Ask the founder to define the first customer segment narrowly enough to reach. Request the basis for TAM, serviceable available market (SAM) and serviceable obtainable market (SOM), including sources, pricing assumptions and expected customer counts.
Reconcile the numbers: if the plan requires 1,000 customers at a stated price, ask how many sales representatives, partners or months are needed to acquire them. Probe the sales cycle, decision maker, implementation burden, geography and channel. A huge TAM without a plausible first niche and customer-acquisition plan is not evidence of a large business. The UK readiness checklist emphasizes a focused niche and evidence-backed assumptions: UK Government investor-readiness essentials.

4. Traction and unit economics
Request the latest dated figures, not an undated growth narrative. Separate what has happened from what is expected:
- Paid evidence: collected revenue, paid pilots and purchase orders.
- Committed evidence: signed contracts, dated letters of intent (LOIs) and partner commitments.
- Behavioral evidence: repeat use, retention, engagement and completed deployments.
- Forward-looking evidence: pipeline opportunities with dates, values, stage and an identified buyer.
Ask how revenue is recognized, what it costs to serve a customer, which margins are expected, and what retention means for this product. Ask which assumptions are most fragile and whether metrics can be independently checked. A pipeline is not revenue; an LOI is not necessarily a binding order. The readiness checklist lists contracts, paid pilots, LOIs, revenue trends, retention or engagement metrics and time-bound pipeline data as examples of evidence-backed traction.
5. Team and execution capacity
Identify who owns product, sales, operations, security and financial control. Ask what the founders have already built or sold, which experience is directly relevant, and what they learned from setbacks. Probe complementary skills, decision-making responsibilities and the ability to recruit missing capabilities.

List the key gaps: a regulated-market specialist, enterprise salesperson, engineering lead or finance owner may be essential to the next milestone. The Angel Capital Association includes a strong management team with relevant experience and proven skills among common angel-group criteria: Angel Capital Association investor FAQs.
6. Financing, milestones and investor fit
Ask how much the company is raising, how much is already committed, what instrument is proposed and exactly what the proceeds will fund. Require a milestone that the round should achieve—such as a validated deployment, a revenue target or a regulatory submission—rather than “more growth.”
Then check personal fit: does the opportunity match your sector knowledge, risk capacity, time horizon and portfolio plan? The SEC notes that angels commonly invest in early rounds and may syndicate; deals may use convertible debt or equity, while venture funds often invest through equity and operate on a longer fund lifecycle. These are general patterns, not terms for a particular deal.
Questions to ask before you leave the booth
| Area | Useful question | Evidence to request afterward |
|---|---|---|
| Problem | Who has the problem, how urgent is it, and what do they use now? | Customer interviews, usage data and independent references |
| Buyer | Who signs, who uses the product and what budget pays for it? | Contracts, purchase orders and a description of the buying process |
| Product | What does the product do today, and why would a customer switch? | Demo access, deployment history and competitor or alternative analysis |
| Market | What is the first reachable segment, and how were TAM, SAM and SOM calculated? | Sources, assumptions, pricing, customer counts and sales-capacity model |
| Traction | Which numbers are paid, committed, forecast or merely interested? | Dated revenue, retention, engagement, contracts and pipeline report |
| Team | What has each founder executed, and which critical capability is missing? | References, role allocation and hiring plan |
| Defensibility | What prevents a better-funded competitor from copying this? | IP ownership, cost model, switching evidence and regulatory analysis |
| Round | How much is being raised, on what instrument and for which milestone? | Cap table, term sheet or note, use-of-proceeds budget and runway model |
Ask for a specific follow-up date and the exact documents that will be provided. A founder who cannot distinguish paid customers from prospects has given you a diligence task; do not silently convert the claim into traction.

| Comparison axis | Questions for every startup | What a stronger case looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Customer evidence | Is the pain urgent? Is the buyer clear? Who has paid or committed? | Specific customer references and dated, verifiable commitments |
| Market access | What is the first niche, sales cycle and route to customers? | A focused segment with a credible acquisition process and assumptions |
| Team execution | Have the founders delivered relevant products or sales before? | Complementary skills, integrity, references and a realistic hiring plan |
| Product and defensibility | What value is delivered, what alternatives exist and what is hard to copy? | Demonstrated customer value plus a barrier that can be verified |
| Traction and economics | What is paid, repeated and profitable or becoming so? | Quality revenue, retention, margins and a pipeline that converts |
| Capital and terms | How much is sought, what dilution or conversion can occur, and what comes next? | Proceeds tied to milestones and terms you can understand and model |
| Risk and liquidity | What technical, market, regulatory and execution risks remain? | Specific mitigations and a plausible, appropriately qualified liquidity path |
There is no universally validated weighting formula for these factors. Stage and sector change the evidence you should expect: a pre-revenue hardware company will not have the same metrics as a subscription software company. Use the framework to expose trade-offs, then write why one opportunity fits your portfolio better than another. The Angel Capital Association, UK readiness guidance and SEC material all describe diligence factors, but none establishes a universal scorecard.
After the conference: a verification workflow
- Preserve the conversation. Within 24 hours, write down names, claims, figures, dates, customer examples, the amount sought and every promised document. Mark each item as observed, stated by the founder or still unverified.
- Reconcile company materials. Compare the pitch deck with dated revenue, customer, retention and pipeline evidence. Investigate changes in definitions, unusual one-time revenue and metrics that cannot be reproduced.
- Test the market independently. Speak with potential buyers or industry participants who are not selected solely by the founder. Check whether the stated problem, budget, buying process and competitive alternatives match reality.
- Check the team and ownership. Take references, confirm roles and review the capitalization table, option pool, prior financings and any promised equity. Look for undisclosed founder departures, related-party arrangements or ownership disputes.
- Review financial assumptions. Examine cash, burn, runway, gross margin assumptions, customer-acquisition cost, hiring plan and the use-of-proceeds budget. Ask what happens if the next milestone takes twice as long.
- Investigate legal, IP and regulatory matters. Confirm that the company owns or licenses key IP, that employment and contractor assignments are complete, and that sector-specific approvals or privacy obligations are understood.
- Model the proposed instrument. Read the note, SAFE-like instrument or equity terms with qualified legal and financial advisers where appropriate. Model conversion, dilution, liquidation preferences, pro-rata rights, information rights and future funding needs rather than relying on a headline valuation.
- Make an explicit decision. Invest, continue diligence, wait for a milestone, or decline. Waiting or declining because evidence is incomplete is a valid outcome.
The Angel Capital Association describes group diligence as validation of the business plan, management, market opportunity and required funding before negotiating a term sheet; processes and timing vary by group. Its general process description says about 10% to 25% of applicants reach an angel-group screening stage and 25% to 50% of companies reaching diligence are funded. Those figures are broad process descriptions, not current industry-wide probabilities or a forecast for an individual company.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read the financing proposal
Amount and use of proceeds
Translate the raise into months of runway and deliverables. A credible budget links engineering, sales, compliance and working capital to a milestone. If the company cannot explain what success looks like at the end of the round, the amount may be an arbitrary target rather than a financing plan.
Instrument and dilution
Equity, convertible debt and other instruments distribute control, downside protection and dilution differently. A conversion cap or discount can create substantial dilution in a later round; interest, maturity and repayment provisions can matter in a convertible debt structure. Do not infer your ownership from the amount invested alone—read the fully diluted cap table and all rights attached to existing securities.

Red flags that warrant a pause
- Unverifiable claims about customers, revenue, patents or partnerships.
- A TAM number with no first segment, buyer, pricing logic or acquisition route.
- “Pipeline” presented as booked revenue, or LOIs described as binding contracts.
- Metrics without dates, definitions, cohort information or a way to reproduce them.
- Technology described as a moat without customer switching evidence or ownership documents.
- A round sized around an attractive headline valuation rather than a defined milestone.
- Pressure to transfer funds immediately or reluctance to provide basic company and financing information.
- Founder responsibilities, cap-table ownership or material legal issues that remain unclear.
One red flag is a reason to ask a sharper question, not automatic proof of misconduct. A pattern of evasiveness, contradictions or unsupported certainty is a reason to stop and verify independently.
Risk, eligibility and professional advice
Early-stage investments can lose all of their value. Startups may fail to find product-market fit, run out of cash, face technical or regulatory setbacks, or require repeated financing on unfavorable terms. Private-company information is usually less standardized than public-company reporting, so projections deserve skepticism and material claims deserve verification. The SEC’s risk discussion illustrates why valuation and outcome estimates should be treated as uncertain: SEC filing risk discussion.
Rules governing offerings, accredited or otherwise eligible investors, disclosures, tax treatment and marketing differ by country and by deal structure. U.S. SEC guidance cannot be substituted for legal advice in the UK or elsewhere. Obtain advice from professionals who understand the relevant jurisdiction before signing or transferring funds.
For context, the SEC reports that angels invested more than $17.9 billion in early-stage companies in 2024 and that venture-capital investment rose from approximately $164 billion in 2023 to approximately $215 billion in 2024. The SEC page was last reviewed or updated April 24, 2026; these are market-level figures, not evidence that any particular conference company is investable: SEC early-stage investor guidance.
A compact decision record
Before making a decision, complete a one-page record with these fields:
- Customer: named buyer, urgent problem and current alternative.
- Evidence: paid, committed, behavioral and forecast metrics, each with a date and definition.
- Market: first niche, buying process, pricing and sources for market assumptions.
- Product: demonstrated value, alternatives and the specific defensibility claim to verify.
- Team: relevant execution history, references and critical gaps.
- Round: amount, committed capital, instrument, cap-table impact and milestone funded.
- Risks: technical, market, regulatory, legal and financing risks with mitigations.
- Decision: invest, continue diligence, wait for evidence or decline, with a reason.
This record makes two conference conversations comparable and shows exactly what must be proven before money moves. Optional background reading listed by the Angel Capital Association includes Angel Investing: Matching Start-up Funds with Start-up Companies by Mark Van Osnabrugge and Robert Robinson; treat it as general education rather than a substitute for deal-specific advice: Angel Capital Association investor FAQs.
