A stablecoin is not automatically worth $1 of trading collateral just because it targets a $1 peg. The venue decides whether it is eligible, how much of its value counts, and what it can do with it if your account falls below margin requirements. Evaluate those venue rules separately from the token issuer’s reserves and redemption terms.
Start with the exact venue, product, and account
Before transferring funds, check the rules for the specific stablecoin, trading product, account mode, and jurisdiction you plan to use. A token accepted in one account or product may not be accepted in another. A venue can also change collateral settings, so confirm the live terms rather than relying on an old example or a general claim that a token is “supported.”
- Confirm eligibility: Find the venue’s collateral or margin documentation for the exact asset and product. Check the account mode and whether any regional restrictions apply.
- Find the recognized value: Identify the collateral ratio or weight, haircut method, valuation index, and any asset or concentration limits. Do not assume a $1 market price receives $1 of margin credit.
- Read the liquidation and conversion rules: Find out what happens if your margin falls below maintenance requirements, whether collateral can be sold or converted automatically, and whether the action can affect other positions or balances in the account.
- Check redemption and reserves: Review who can redeem directly with the issuer, the issuer’s stated process, and the reserve disclosures relevant to the token.
- Consider access under stress: Assess whether you could transfer or trade the token if a chain, venue, or market became unavailable or impaired.
Eligibility, valuation, and concentration
Venues may assign asset-specific collateral value ratios, apply haircuts, or limit how much of a particular asset counts toward an account. A concentration limit can matter even when the token is otherwise eligible: holding more than the recognized amount may not add equivalent margin capacity. Check the valuation source and how often it is updated, as well as any caps or conditions that could reduce credit.

Maintenance margin and liquidation
Collateral value is only one part of the risk. Read the account’s maintenance-margin rules and the venue’s authority to liquidate, sell, or convert collateral. Coinbase Global Exchange documentation describes collateral value using notional value and collateral weight, with the greater of a base haircut and a closeout-horizon haircut applied. It also says collateral liquidation may occur when portfolio margin falls below maintenance margin. These are venue-specific mechanics, not rules for every exchange or account.

How venue collateral rules differ
These examples show why headline ratios are not enough: valuation methods and automatic actions differ, and product documentation can change. Confirm the current specification for your account before relying on a figure.

A quoted 100% collateral ratio is a valuation input, not a guarantee that the token will remain eligible, trade at its peg, or be convertible at par during stress.

Separate issuer redemption from exchange collateral treatment
Issuer redemption and venue margin credit are different layers. An issuer’s promise or process for redeeming tokens does not require an exchange to accept them, value them at par, or keep them eligible. Conversely, an exchange’s collateral treatment does not establish that every holder can redeem directly with the issuer.
When reviewing redemption, establish who is entitled to redeem, what the issuer is obligated to do, and any applicable process conditions such as minimums, fees, timing, or geographic limits. A token’s secondary-market price is also distinct from direct issuer redemption: if you cannot redeem directly, your practical exit may depend on market access and the price available to you.

What reserve disclosures can and cannot tell you
Review reserve composition, liquidity, concentration, custody, segregation, and the date and scope of any attestation or audit. Circle Internet Group, Inc.’s 2025 Form 10-K reported that approximately 88% of USDC reserves were held in the Circle Reserve Fund as of December 31, 2025. That dated issuer disclosure describes reserve allocation at that point; it does not guarantee immediate redemption or determine how a trading venue will value USDC as collateral.
Reserve statements also need to be read in context. In an April 4, 2025 statement, the SEC Division of Corporation Finance said, for its defined “Covered Stablecoin” category: “The assets held in the Reserve consist of USD and/or other assets that are considered low-risk and readily liquid so as to allow a Covered Stablecoin issuer to honor all redemptions on demand.” The statement is scoped to that category and should not be generalized to every stablecoin.

Understand the regulatory scope
The GENIUS Act defines a payment stablecoin around payment or settlement use, an issuer obligation to convert, redeem, or repurchase it for a fixed monetary amount, and a representation or reasonable expectation of stable value. Its statutory provisions address permitted reserves, redemption procedures, and risk management. Those provisions are distinct from proposed implementing rules and from a venue’s own decision about whether to accept a token as trading collateral.
On February 6, 2026, CFTC staff described a revised no-action position for certain futures commission merchant requirements, including acceptance of qualifying non-securities digital assets as customer margin collateral. The revision to Letter 25-40 clarified that a national trust bank may be an eligible issuer for that position. It has defined scope; it is not a blanket requirement that every venue accept every stablecoin or offer the same collateral terms.

Plan for market and operational stress
Collateral risk can rise when several things happen together: a token trades away from its peg, market depth thins, transfers are delayed, or the venue changes its haircuts or eligibility. An exchange can apply haircuts and liquidate collateral, but there is no universal stress haircut or guarantee of continuous market liquidity that applies across venues.
- Secondary-market liquidity: Consider whether there is enough depth to exit at a reasonable price, particularly during volatility. A target peg is not proof that the token can always be sold at that price.
- Transfers and chain support: Confirm which chains the venue supports and consider whether a chain disruption or delayed transfer could prevent you from moving funds when needed.
- Venue availability: Consider the effect of an outage or restricted access on your ability to adjust positions or withdraw collateral.
- Rule changes: Monitor collateral ratios, haircuts, limits, and eligibility conditions that the venue may modify, including in response to market conditions.
Use a comparison that fits your account
There is no single stablecoin established as the best collateral for every trader, venue, product, or jurisdiction. Compare the specific options you can actually hold and use against the factors that determine whether they will support your account when needed.
- Issuer obligations and practical access to redemption.
- Reserve composition, liquidity, custody arrangements, and reporting dates.
- Secondary-market liquidity and supported transfer chains.
- Venue eligibility, jurisdiction, account mode, collateral ratio, haircut method, and concentration limits.
- Liquidation, automatic conversion, and cross-account effects.
The European Central Bank reported in 2025 that around 80% of trades on crypto-asset trading platforms used stablecoins, up from 45% five years earlier. That figure describes trading-platform use, not the share of positions funded with stablecoin collateral, and should not be treated as evidence that any particular token is suitable for margin.
