To evaluate a semiconductor stock, read revenue growth, gross-margin changes, and inventory together across several reporting periods. Revenue shows whether demand is expanding, margins show how much of each sales dollar remains after production costs, and inventory indicates whether supply is aligned with that demand. None is decisive alone: a product launch can justify a temporary inventory build, while falling sales can make inventory days rise even when inventory dollars barely change.
This framework explains how to evaluate semiconductor stocks using revenue, margins, and inventory trends without mistaking an industry statistic for a company forecast or a single quarter for a durable business trend.
What each indicator tells you
Revenue: demand, mix, and timing
Start with year-over-year growth and, where disclosed, sequential growth. Then ask what produced the change. A semiconductor company can grow because it shipped more units, raised prices, changed its product mix, gained share, benefited from a customer launch, or recognized shipments earlier than expected. The same percentage growth has a different quality when it comes from broad demand across several end markets than when it depends on one customer or a single product cycle.
Read the segment and end-market discussion in the filing rather than treating consolidated revenue as a complete demand measure. Note whether management describes backlog conversion, order deferrals, cancellations, channel inventory, or unusual shipment timing. Compare the company’s result with an industry aggregate only as context. Industry growth does not prove that a particular issuer gained share or that its next quarter will repeat the rate.

Gross margin: economics after production costs
Gross margin is gross profit divided by revenue. It reflects selling prices, but also product mix, factory utilization, manufacturing yields, operating efficiency, competitive pricing, unabsorbed capacity costs, and inventory write-downs. A higher margin can therefore result from selling more premium products rather than from higher prices; a lower margin can reflect a temporary charge rather than a collapse in the underlying product economics.
When the margin moves materially, look for management’s bridge from the prior period. Separate recurring drivers—such as a lasting mix shift or structural utilization change—from one-time items, including an inventory charge, an export-control-related cost, or a manufacturing transition. Check whether the explanation is consistent with revenue mix and inventory behavior.
Inventory: supply committed ahead of demand
Inventory is both a balance-sheet asset and a timing signal. Inventory dollars show how much cash is tied up in materials, work in process, and finished goods. Inventory days (often called days of inventory or days inventory outstanding) relate that balance to the company’s cost of sales or another disclosed sales base. A common approximation is average inventory divided by cost of goods sold, multiplied by the number of days in the period; use the issuer’s own definition when it provides one.
Inventory days are sales-sensitive. If sales fall while the dollar balance is roughly unchanged, days rise automatically. Conversely, a dollar increase may be deliberate when wafers or finished chips are being positioned for a new-product ramp. The question is whether the stock can be sold at expected prices. Cancellations, deferrals, returns, or price concessions can turn a planned build into excess inventory, leading to write-downs and lower gross margin.
Build a comparable dataset before drawing conclusions
Use at least four to eight quarters when filings make that history available, and include the latest annual period. A single quarter can be distorted by seasonality, a customer launch, a factory outage, or a shipment pulled forward. For each period, record the following in a spreadsheet:
- Revenue, year-over-year growth, and sequential growth.
- Revenue by segment and disclosed end market, plus any change in customer concentration.
- Gross profit and gross margin, with management’s stated causes for the change.
- Inventory dollars, inventory days, and the company’s calculation basis.
- Shipments or units, production levels, capacity utilization, and yield commentary when disclosed.
- Inventory reserves, write-downs, returns, price-protection provisions, or other unusual charges.
- Management’s outlook and any stated assumptions about demand, supply, and product ramps.
Keep accounting periods aligned. A company with a 52- or 53-week fiscal year may report a different number of days from a calendar-year peer. Compare year-over-year periods when seasonality is material, and label fiscal-year differences in your notes. Do not replace missing values with estimates; mark a comparison as “not stated” when an issuer does not disclose the measure.

Put industry growth in its proper place
The World Semiconductor Trade Statistics organization reported global semiconductor sales of USD 795.6 billion in 2025, up 26.2% year over year. Its March 6, 2026 release, which incorporated finalized fourth-quarter 2025 data, reported fourth-quarter sales of USD 238.9 billion, up 38.4% year over year. The release is an industry backdrop, not a company forecast or a valuation signal: WSTS, “Global Semiconductor Market grows 26% in 2025 to $796 billion”.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchUse that backdrop to ask whether a company is growing faster or slower than the market and why. A company growing below the industry may be losing share, exposed to a weaker end market, or deliberately exiting low-margin business. Outgrowing the industry may indicate share gains, a favorable product mix, or simply greater exposure to the strongest cycle. The comparison is useful only after you identify the mix and timing behind both numbers.
Analyze revenue across several dimensions
Separate volume, price, and mix
Management may not disclose units and average selling prices separately, so use the explanations it does provide. A revenue increase accompanied by stable units and premium-product growth has different implications from one driven by a temporary price increase. If units rise but revenue does not, pricing pressure or a move toward lower-priced products may be absorbing the volume benefit.
Check end-market breadth
Classify growth by data center, communications, automotive, industrial, consumer, or other disclosed markets. Broad-based growth is generally easier to interpret than a surge concentrated in one customer or application, but breadth alone is not proof of durability. Identify whether the strongest market is in an early launch, a cyclical recovery, or a mature category facing replacement delays.
Investigate shipment timing and orders
A quarter with unusually high shipments can reflect customers pulling orders forward. The next period may then show a sequential decline without a comparable collapse in end demand. Conversely, a revenue miss accompanied by order deferrals or cancellations can foreshadow inventory pressure. Read the cash-flow statement and receivables discussion alongside revenue: a divergence does not establish a problem, but it tells you where to investigate.
Explain every meaningful gross-margin change
Product mix and pricing
Premium accelerators, leading-edge processors, specialty analog devices, and mature-node products carry different economics. A shift toward higher-value products can lift consolidated margin even if list prices are unchanged. A shift toward lower-priced volume products can reduce margin while revenue grows. Look for segment margin disclosure and comments on competitive pricing before attributing a change to demand strength.

Utilization, yields, and fixed costs
Fabrication plants carry substantial fixed costs. When utilization falls, fixed costs are spread over fewer good units and unabsorbed capacity charges can depress gross margin. Yield losses, start-up inefficiencies, or a process transition can have a similar effect. For fabless companies, foundry and packaging costs, expedite fees, and supply agreements can create different sensitivities from those of an integrated manufacturer.
Inventory charges and other temporary items
An inventory reserve lowers gross profit when expected selling prices or demand no longer support the recorded cost. Separate the charge from the underlying margin, then ask whether the event signals a continuing problem: a one-time product discontinuation is different from recurring cancellations across a product family. A margin recovery is less persuasive if it depends only on reversing a reserve while demand remains weak.
AMD’s fiscal 2025 filing illustrates the need for that reconciliation. It reported a 50% gross margin in 2025 versus 49% in 2024, attributing the increase primarily to product mix while noting approximately USD 440 million of net inventory and related charges associated with U.S. government export controls on MI308 products. AMD also described a USD 1.5 billion inventory increase driven primarily by builds for new-product ramps. Those facts cannot be reduced to “higher margin is good” or “higher inventory is bad”; each has a stated operating cause: AMD fiscal 2025 Form 10-K.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRead inventory dollars and inventory days together
What a rising days figure can mean
First determine whether the change comes from the numerator, the denominator, or both. Rising inventory dollars with rising sales may be a planned build ahead of a launch. Flat inventory dollars with falling sales can produce a sharp days increase without additional units being purchased. Rising dollars and falling sales are more concerning because they combine cash tied up in stock with weaker sell-through.
Microchip Technology reported inventory of USD 1.29 billion and 251 days at March 31, 2025, compared with USD 1.32 billion and 224 days at March 31, 2024. The company said inventory dollars were generally flat while days increased significantly because net sales were lower. This is a concrete example of why the two measures answer different questions: Microchip Technology FY2025 Form 10-K.
Distinguish a ramp from excess stock
For a ramp, look for corroboration: announced products, customer qualification activity, capacity additions, purchase commitments, and management’s expected launch timing. A ramp can temporarily increase raw materials and finished goods before revenue arrives. If the launch slips or customers defer orders, that same inventory may become obsolete or require price concessions.

Microchip’s FY2026 annual report describes the failure mode directly: “Because we built inventories in response to customer demand, the cancellation or deferral of product orders resulted in excess inventory, which then resulted in write-downs of inventory and an adverse effect on our gross margins in fiscal 2025 and fiscal 2026.” Read the quote in its fiscal-year context in the Microchip Technology 2026 Annual Report.
Include channel inventory and customer rights
For companies selling through distributors, inventory held outside the company can matter as much as the balance on its own shelves. Review disclosures about distributor stock, sell-in versus sell-through, returns, rebates, price protection, and the point at which revenue is recognized. Rights that allow distributors to return products or receive price adjustments can affect estimates and future gross profit. An issuer’s 2026 annual-report disclosure provides an example of these distributor-inventory and recognition considerations: 2026 annual report excerpt.
Use a three-indicator diagnostic, not a single threshold
| Revenue trend | Gross-margin trend | Inventory pattern | Questions to investigate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Growing across several markets | Stable or improving | Inventory rises in line with launches and shipments | Is the growth broad enough, and are utilization and yields supporting the margin? |
| Growing, but concentrated in one product or customer | Improving mainly through mix | Inventory builds ahead of a ramp | What happens if the launch slips or that customer changes its order schedule? |
| Flat or declining | Declining | Inventory dollars rise and days rise | Are cancellations, excess capacity, reserves, or pricing pressure creating a self-reinforcing downturn? |
| Declining | Stable | Inventory dollars flat, days higher | Is the days increase mathematically driven by lower sales, or is sell-through weakening further? |
| Growing | Declining | Inventory falls | Is the company discounting to move stock, selling a lower-margin mix, or benefiting from a temporary cost effect? |
The table is a diagnostic starting point, not an investment score. Confirm each interpretation with the filing’s segment data, production commentary, reserves, and outlook. There is no universal “healthy” gross-margin percentage or inventory-days cutoff that works for every semiconductor business.
Compare companies only after normalizing their business models
A foundry, a fabless designer, an integrated device manufacturer, and an analog specialist carry different fixed-cost and supply-chain exposures. Comparing their headline margins without that context can produce a false ranking. TSMC’s foundry economics and capacity base are not interchangeable with those of a fabless chip designer.
| Issuer and period | Revenue | Gross margin | What the figure demonstrates |
|---|---|---|---|
| TSMC, 2025 | NT$3,809.05 billion, up 31.6% | 59.9%, versus 56.1% in 2024 | A company-specific example of revenue and margin reported together; its economics should not be treated as a universal target. |
| AMD, fiscal 2025 | Not stated in the cited comparison | 50%, versus 49% in 2024 | Mix helped margin, while export-control-related inventory and related charges offset part of the improvement. |
| Microchip, March 31, 2025 | Net sales lower than the prior year | Inventory days rose to 251 from 224 | Days increased while inventory dollars were generally flat, showing the denominator effect. |

A practical review process
- Collect the filings. Download the latest annual report and the most recent quarterly reports. Record the fiscal dates and definitions used for revenue, gross margin, and inventory days.
- Chart the three indicators. Plot revenue growth, gross margin, inventory dollars, and inventory days for the same periods. Annotate launches, factory transitions, acquisitions, export restrictions, and major customer events.
- Read the explanations. Search the filing for “mix,” “utilization,” “yield,” “unabsorbed,” “reserve,” “write-down,” “deferred,” “cancelled,” “distributor,” and “inventory.” Tie every material movement to a disclosed operating cause or mark the cause as unresolved.
- Test the ramp thesis. If management says inventory supports a new product, check launch timing, customer qualification, capacity additions, and whether revenue is beginning to follow the build.
- Stress the downside. Ask how a 10% or 20% demand shortfall—used as a sensitivity exercise, not a forecast—would affect utilization, inventory days, reserves, and gross margin. Use the company’s disclosed cost structure rather than assuming a generic semiconductor response.
- Compare peers selectively. Match business models and fiscal periods. Explain differences before ranking trends; do not apply one company’s margin or inventory target to another.
- Move beyond operations. Only after this work should you examine valuation, balance-sheet liquidity, competitive position, capital needs, governance, and risks. The three indicators cannot identify an attractive stock by themselves.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Treating inventory growth as automatically negative
Inventory can be rational ahead of a product ramp or when supply must be secured in advance. Require evidence of expected demand and monitor whether shipments and revenue follow. The risk rises when orders are deferred, customers cancel, or the company begins increasing reserves.

Using inventory days as a universal score
Days depend on the business model, accounting definition, seasonality, and sales denominator. Compare the issuer with its own history and closely matched peers. A higher number is a signal to investigate, not a verdict.
Calling every margin increase a pricing win
Mix, utilization, yields, fixed-cost absorption, and reserve reversals can all move gross margin. Read the reconciliation and check whether the driver is recurring.
Comparing a cycle peak with a trough
Semiconductor demand and capacity are cyclical. Label periods by market conditions, not just fiscal year. A margin or inventory improvement during a recovery may not represent a new long-term normal.

Revenue, margin, and inventory trends describe operating momentum and risk. They do not establish fair value or expected stock returns. A decision also requires valuation assumptions, balance-sheet analysis, competitive durability, technology risk, customer concentration, and the investor’s time horizon.
What a complete conclusion should say
A defensible conclusion identifies the trend, its stated cause, and the evidence that would confirm or invalidate it. For example: revenue is growing faster than the industry because a named end market is expanding; gross margin improved mainly through product mix but remains exposed to utilization; inventory rose ahead of a disclosed launch, and the next two reports will show whether shipments validate the build. That is more informative than labeling the stock “good” because revenue rose or “bad” because inventory increased.
Before presenting any figure as current, check the company’s latest filing. The examples above are tied to the reporting periods identified by their issuers, and subsequent results may change the interpretation.
