Evaluate semiconductor-equipment stocks in two separate passes: first determine whether the business can grow and remain resilient through a capital-spending cycle, then determine whether the current share price already reflects that quality. Map each company’s exposure to logic, foundry and memory spending; separate new-system revenue from services and upgrades; test whether orders become shipments and accepted sales; assess technology execution, competition, customer concentration and export restrictions; compare financial resilience; and only then apply current, comparable valuation measures.
AI demand, a large backlog, a technically important product or a strong historical margin does not by itself make a stock a good purchase. Equipment revenue depends on semiconductor manufacturers’ investment decisions, and those decisions can be delayed, canceled or redirected. The framework below is designed to make those risks visible before you commit capital.
Why semiconductor-equipment stocks require a different checklist
Equipment suppliers sell the machines, software and services that semiconductor manufacturers use to build and inspect chips. Their customers’ capital budgets, rather than end-consumer demand alone, determine when orders are placed. A chipmaker can postpone a fab project, change a process technology or cut spending when demand, financing, inventories or policy conditions change. The supplier then feels that decision through orders, shipments, utilization of its installed base and margins.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe industry is also cyclical. ASML states in its risk disclosure that “The semiconductor industry has historically been cyclical.” Logic and memory do not necessarily peak and trough together, so a company with heavy exposure to one category can produce a very different result from a peer serving another. Treat every management growth explanation as a hypothesis to test against reported sales, orders, customer capital plans and subsequent results.

Use the following questions in sequence:
- Which end markets and customers create demand?
- How much revenue comes from new systems versus the installed base?
- Are orders converting into shipments, customer acceptance and recognized sales?
- Do research and development projects produce adopted, defensible products?
- How exposed is the company to concentrated customers, regions and export rules?
- Can cash flow and margins withstand a downturn?
- Is the share price reasonable relative to comparable companies and realistic assumptions?
1. Map end-market and customer exposure
Separate logic, foundry and memory demand
Start by classifying revenue and customer programs by application. Foundry and logic manufacturers may invest to add leading-edge capacity, improve process technology or support specific computing applications. Memory manufacturers can follow a different cycle, with spending influenced by inventory, pricing and the balance between capacity and demand. “Other” applications can include mature-node, power, analog or specialty devices, each with its own investment pattern.
Do not rely on a single industry growth number without checking its definition, date and geography. Instead, build a company-specific demand map from filings and investor materials:
- List the main end markets reported by the company.
- Estimate each market’s share of systems, services and total sales where disclosure permits.
- Identify which customers are adding capacity, replacing tools or moving to a new process.
- Check whether those projects depend on a narrow group of customers or a single technology transition.
- Compare management’s explanation with later orders, revenue and customer capital-spending updates.
Measure concentration and project dependence
Customer concentration matters even when total industry demand looks healthy. If a few manufacturers account for a large portion of sales, one delayed fab, qualification problem or budget reduction can affect a reporting period. Record the largest customers, their regions and the projects that support current growth. A broad installed base is more resilient than a forecast that depends on one customer’s uncompleted expansion.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Use management commentary as a testable claim
Company commentary is useful context, not independent confirmation. In ASML’s 2025 annual-report financial commentary, Chief Financial Officer Roger Dassen wrote: “This was another excellent year for ASML. In line with expectations, sales grew 15.6% driven by the continuing growth in AI.” That describes ASML’s own 2025 results. It does not establish that every equipment supplier benefited equally, or that AI-related demand will persist at the same rate.
2. Separate systems from services and upgrades
New-system revenue is usually tied to customers’ current capital budgets. Service, field options, upgrades and other installed-base sales can follow a different pattern and may provide support when system orders soften. Track these streams separately rather than treating all revenue as equally recurring.
What to record for each stream
- Systems: units shipped, average selling price where disclosed, product mix and customer acceptance.
- Services: maintenance, parts, software and field support tied to equipment already in use.
- Upgrades and field options: additions that improve an installed tool or adapt it to a new process.
- Other installed-base revenue: classify it carefully because accounting definitions differ by company.
A larger installed base can support service revenue, but it is not guaranteed. ASML notes that customers may perform more work themselves, use third parties or face export restrictions that limit service access. Check utilization, customer outsourcing and regional restrictions before assuming service growth will continue.

| Metric | ASML 2025 figure | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Total net sales | €32.7 billion | Baseline for calculating mix and growth. |
| Gross margin | 52.8% | Compare with the company’s own history and peers on a consistent basis. |
| Net service and field-option sales | €8.2 billion | Measure the scale of installed-base revenue. |
| Service and field-option growth | 26.2% year over year | Compare with system growth, not with an industry average. |
| Net system-sales growth | 12.4% year over year | Shows that system and service streams can grow at different rates. |
| Research and development costs | €4.7 billion | Assess investment intensity and whether spending produces accepted products. |
Do not transfer these percentages to another company without checking its accounting, fiscal year, currency and revenue definitions.
3. Test whether orders become revenue
Bookings and backlog are indicators, not guaranteed sales. A customer can cancel, push out delivery, lack a ready site, encounter a licensing problem or defer formal acceptance. Shipment may occur in one period while revenue is recognized only after installation and acceptance in another.
Build an order-to-cash bridge
- Record new orders and the company’s definition of a booking.
- Track backlog at the beginning and end of each period.
- Subtract cancellations, push-outs and changes in scope when disclosed.
- Compare backlog with shipments, customer-site readiness and acceptance timing.
- Reconcile the resulting sales with recognized revenue and cash collection.
- Investigate any widening gap rather than assuming backlog will convert unchanged.
ASML sells a relatively small number of high-value lithography systems, so timing can materially change a quarter or year. Its annual report lists 327 systems sold in 2025, compared with 418 in 2024 and 449 in 2023. These are system counts, not dollar-sales figures and not a measure that can be applied to peers. Use them to understand why product mix and acceptance timing deserve attention.
Warning signs in conversion
- Backlog rises while shipments, revenue or cash receipts stagnate.
- Management repeatedly moves deliveries into later quarters.
- Customers report delayed fab construction or financing.
- Export licenses are pending for equipment already included in orders.
- Acceptance terms become longer or customer deposits do not track reported orders.
A strong conversion record does not eliminate cyclicality; it simply distinguishes real demand from timing or accounting noise.

4. Evaluate technology and competitive position
Research spending matters only when it produces products that customers qualify, deploy in volume and continue to need. Compare each roadmap with the process requirements customers disclose, including productivity, precision, yield and total cost of ownership where the company reports those measures.
Questions for every major product
- Has a customer accepted the product for production, or is it still in development?
- How long is qualification, and what milestones precede volume shipments?
- Does the tool improve throughput, overlay, inspection sensitivity, yield or cost of ownership?
- Can the advantage be protected by intellectual property, process know-how, software or service capability?
- Could a competing tool or an alternative manufacturing approach meet the same need?
- Will the product increase the installed base and create future service or upgrade demand?
ASML identifies uncertain new-product success and intense competition as risks. Its 2025 report describes investment in lithography, metrology, inspection and software development. Treat those investments as inputs to be tested against adoption and financial returns, not as proof of a durable moat.
Distinguish technical leadership from investable economics
A technically important product can still be a poor investment if development costs are excessive, customer concentration is extreme, capacity is inflexible or the share price discounts years of flawless execution. Conversely, a less visible product can generate attractive economics through a large installed base, high switching costs and disciplined service execution. Your analysis should connect technical claims to units, margins, cash flow and customer behavior.

5. Examine geographic, customer and policy risk
Map revenue by region and service access
List sales, manufacturing, service capacity and major customers by region. A company can be exposed to a market through equipment shipments, spare parts, software updates or field engineers even when its reported headquarters are elsewhere. Check whether a region’s contribution is growing faster than the company total and whether local service is operationally essential.
Understand export controls and trade measures
Export restrictions, licensing rules, tariffs and other trade measures can limit deliveries, delay approvals or prevent servicing. The affected products and rules change over time, so consult the latest company filing and current official government materials before making a company-specific conclusion. Do not assume that a backlog remains addressable if a license is required.
Applied Materials’ investor release lists semiconductor-demand volatility, order postponement or cancellation, customer concentration, longer sales cycles and trade risks among factors that could affect results. That is a record of risks the company itself identifies, not an independent forecast of their probability.
Stress-test a policy shock
- Identify revenue and installed-base exposure in restricted jurisdictions.
- Separate equipment that may require a license from products that can still ship.
- Estimate the effect of delayed deliveries on revenue recognition and factory utilization.
- Assess whether service, parts and software access would also be constrained.
- Look for alternative customers or regions, then test how quickly they could replace lost demand.
6. Compare financial resilience through a cycle
Use consistent fiscal periods, currencies and accounting bases. Compare operating performance across several years rather than ranking companies on one unusually strong quarter.
| Measure | What to calculate | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue growth | Growth by end market and by systems versus services | Shows whether expansion is broad or concentrated in one cycle. |
| Gross margin | Level and change during strong and weak periods | Reveals pricing power, mix and fixed-cost sensitivity. |
| R&D intensity | R&D as a percentage of sales and cash spending | Indicates roadmap commitment; verify that spending produces adoption. |
| Operating cash flow | Cash generation relative to net income and backlog | Highlights working-capital strain and earnings quality. |
| Capital intensity | Capital expenditure and manufacturing capacity commitments | Shows how much demand must be sustained to earn an acceptable return. |
| Debt and liquidity | Debt maturities, cash, revolver capacity and covenants | Determines flexibility when customer spending falls. |
| Shareholder returns | Dividends and repurchases against free cash flow | Prevents capital returns from being judged without funding context. |
In a downturn, high fixed costs, inventory buildup or capacity added for a delayed project can pressure margins and cash. A company that preserves liquidity can continue essential research and customer support, while an overextended balance sheet may force cuts at the worst point in the cycle.

- Price-to-earnings: useful when earnings are positive and accounting policies are comparable.
- Enterprise value to operating profit or cash flow: helps account for different debt and cash positions.
- Free-cash-flow yield: useful when capital spending and working capital are normalized.
- Scenario valuation: model a downturn, recovery and long-term case rather than relying on one growth rate.
Adjust for different growth, cyclicality, margins, currency and accounting periods. A lower multiple can reflect weaker technology, more concentrated customers or greater policy exposure; a higher multiple can reflect durable margins but also unrealistic expectations.

8. A repeatable comparison scorecard
When evaluating more than one company, record the same evidence for each. The following axes prevent a strong story in one area from hiding weakness in another.
| Axis | Evidence to collect | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| End-market mix | Logic/foundry, memory and other applications | Which cycle drives the next two years of demand? |
| Customer concentration | Largest customers, regions and project dependencies | Could one delay materially change sales? |
| Revenue quality | Systems, services, upgrades and installed-base scale | How much revenue is supported by existing tools? |
| Order conversion | Bookings, backlog, cancellations, shipments and acceptance | Are reported orders becoming cash-generating sales? |
| Technology and competition | Product performance, roadmap milestones and alternatives | Are R&D dollars producing adopted, defensible products? |
| Financial resilience | Margins, cash flow, R&D, debt and capacity flexibility | Can the company fund the roadmap in a downturn? |
| Geographic and policy exposure | Regional sales, export rules, tariffs and service access | How large is the market the company can actually serve? |
| Valuation | Current comparable multiples and scenario assumptions | Does the price compensate for cyclicality and execution risk? |
9. Step-by-step due-diligence workflow
- Set the comparison date. Use the latest available filings and market prices, and record each fiscal period so quarterly and annual numbers are not mixed.
- Build the demand map. Allocate revenue and customer programs to logic/foundry, memory and other applications.
- Document concentration. Note customer, project and regional dependencies and the consequences of a delay.
- Split revenue. Create separate lines for systems, services, upgrades and other installed-base sales.
- Reconcile orders. Track bookings, backlog, cancellations, shipments, acceptance and cash collection.
- Audit the roadmap. For each major product, record qualification status, production adoption, performance evidence and competitive alternatives.
- Map policy exposure. Identify products and services subject to export licenses or other trade constraints, then check current official rules.
- Stress financials. Model lower customer capital spending, delayed shipments, weaker utilization and continued essential R&D.
- Calculate valuation. Use current prices, consistent share counts and comparable earnings or cash-flow definitions.
- Write a disconfirming case. State what would prove your thesis wrong: a canceled project, failed qualification, margin compression, policy restriction or valuation multiple that assumes unrealistic growth.
- Set monitoring triggers. Define the quarterly facts that would change your view, such as backlog conversion, service growth, gross margin, customer concentration or license approvals.
10. Common analytical mistakes
Confusing backlog with guaranteed revenue
Backlog can be delayed, canceled or recognized only after acceptance. Always reconcile it with shipments, customer readiness and cash.
Assuming service revenue is risk-free
Installed-base sales depend on utilization, customer outsourcing, third-party service and the ability to access equipment in restricted markets.
Generalizing one company’s AI growth
ASML’s statement that AI drove its 2025 growth is company-specific. Test whether each peer has comparable products, customers and exposure before applying the theme.
Using incomparable margins or multiples
Currency, fiscal years, accounting standards, product mix and one-time items can distort comparisons. Normalize definitions before ranking companies.

Treating technical importance as a return forecast
A critical tool can be expensive to develop, vulnerable to alternatives or already fully reflected in the share price. Connect technology evidence to adoption, cash flow and valuation.
Ignoring policy changes until they appear in revenue
Export controls and licensing decisions can affect orders, delivery schedules and service access before a full-year result shows the damage. Monitor official updates and company disclosures continuously.
11. Interpreting ASML’s 2026 outlook
ASML’s 2025 report gives management guidance for 2026 of €34 billion to €39 billion in total net sales and a 51% to 53% gross margin. These are guidance ranges, not 2026 results. Recheck the latest quarterly update before using them in a model, and test whether the range depends on a particular customer, product transition, shipment schedule or policy assumption.
Guidance should be compared with the order-to-cash bridge and with the downside case in your model. A company can meet a sales target while mix, cash conversion or future service economics deteriorate; conversely, a shipment delay can move revenue between periods without changing long-term demand.
12. How to maintain the analysis after buying
Review the scorecard each quarter rather than replacing it with a headline. Update end-market mix, customer concentration, backlog conversion, systems and services growth, gross margin, R&D, cash flow, debt and policy exposure. Record what changed and whether it confirms or contradicts your original thesis.
Revalue the shares when the price, earnings outlook or risk profile changes materially. A stock can become less attractive even as the business improves if the market price rises faster than normalized cash flow. It can also become more interesting after a cyclical decline, but only if the balance sheet, technology roadmap and customer demand remain intact.
Bottom-line decision rule
Buy consideration should require evidence in three separate columns: a durable demand and technology case, credible conversion of orders into cash-generating revenue, and a valuation that compensates for cyclicality, concentration and policy risk. If any column depends mainly on an unverified forecast, a backlog headline or a broad AI narrative, classify the stock as unproven rather than filling the gap with optimism.
