Evaluate a self-driving or intent-based network platform as an operating system for four jobs: translating business requirements into explicit policy, activating that policy across the infrastructure, continuously assuring user and application outcomes, and deciding whether a detected problem receives a recommendation, an approved change, or autonomous remediation. A convincing demonstration must work on your devices, software versions, telemetry, security controls, and change processes—not merely on a vendor’s terminology.
Use the framework below to turn marketing claims into testable requirements, compare products on the same axes, and run a proof of concept (PoC) with measurable acceptance thresholds.
What “self-driving” should mean in an enterprise network
“Self-driving,” “autonomous,” and “intent-based” are not standardized product categories. One platform may provide read-only analytics; another may generate a configuration for human approval; a third may automatically change a setting in a narrowly defined situation. Treat the label as a hypothesis until the vendor shows the complete control loop in your environment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA practical definition has four functional stages:
- Translation: capture a business or IT outcome—such as application reachability, a latency boundary, secure segmentation, or a service-level objective—and turn it into explicit, versioned network policy.
- Activation: deploy the resulting policy consistently across the physical and virtual infrastructure that is actually in scope.
- Assurance: continuously compare intended behavior with observed network state and user or application service evidence.
- Remediation: determine whether the platform only explains a problem, recommends a fix, prepares a change for approval, or applies a guarded change automatically.
Cisco’s published intent-based networking model identifies translation, activation, and assurance as core building blocks. Its stated goal is that “the network continuously monitor and adjust network performance to help assure desired business outcomes.” That is a useful north star, but it is not a performance guarantee for a particular product, hardware estate, or geography.

Evaluate each stage separately. A polished natural-language interface does not prove that policies are unambiguous, a broad device list does not prove that every model is configurable, and an anomaly score does not prove that a remediation is safe.
1. Translate business outcomes into explicit intent
Begin with outcomes people outside the networking team can observe. Avoid starting with a vendor’s feature names or a list of protocols.
Choose outcomes that can be tested
- An application must be reachable from specified user groups, with a defined latency or loss boundary.
- Payment systems, development systems, contractors, and guest users must remain segmented, including during a device failure.
- A voice or video service must meet an agreed service level at selected sites.
- A maintenance change must not interrupt a protected application path.
- A policy violation must be detected within an agreed time and produce an auditable event.
For every outcome, write the scope, exclusions, priority, owner, and evidence that will prove success. Include the source and destination identities, locations, time windows, and exceptions. “Keep the network fast” is not an intent that can be evaluated; “keep round-trip latency below the agreed threshold between these application tiers during business hours” is.

Ask the vendor to show the translation chain
Request a live walkthrough from requirement to device behavior. The demonstration should show the original requirement, the generated policy objects, the commands or APIs sent to devices, and the resulting state. Ask how the system handles:
- Two policies that conflict or have different priorities.
- An exception for one site, application, identity group, or maintenance window.
- A policy edit, approval, version history, and rollback to an earlier version.
- An unsupported feature or a device that is managed manually.
- Ambiguous natural-language input, missing context, or low confidence.
Natural-language input can reduce the effort needed to express a requirement, but it does not make the requirement precise. Require the platform to expose the assumptions it made and to stop for clarification when an assumption could change security or availability.
Require policy governance, not just a policy editor
Intent becomes operationally useful only when it is reviewable and auditable. Check for role-based permissions, separation of duties, approval gates, signed or immutable audit records, policy diffs, and a way to associate a change with a ticket or incident. Determine whether policies are stored in a source-controlled repository, whether concurrent edits are detected, and how the platform resolves a failed deployment halfway through a multi-device change.
2. Inspect activation, domains, and hardware scope
Activation is where a platform’s advertised coverage meets the inventory you must operate. Obtain a compatibility matrix for the exact hardware models, operating-system releases, licenses, controller versions, and feature sets in your estate. “Supports switching” is not enough if the required model or software train is excluded.
Map every domain in your estate
Mark which parts of the environment the platform can read, configure, and assure:

- Campus and branch LANs, including wired access, wireless, and edge devices.
- Wide-area links and routing policy.
- Private and public cloud networks.
- Data-center fabrics, overlays, and service appliances.
- Identity, security, and application telemetry sources.
- Legacy, third-party, or manually managed equipment.
For each domain, distinguish full lifecycle control from read-only visibility, configuration templates, or an integration that merely forwards events. Ask what happens when a device is temporarily unreachable, when a feature is unsupported, or when an operator makes an out-of-band change.
Interpret the vendor examples narrowly
HPE’s Wired Assurance description names support for its EX and CX switch lines and describes Marvis AI features and self-driving troubleshooting actions. That is evidence about the named product and switch families, not proof of universal multi-vendor support. HPE’s Data Center Assurance description says it works with Apstra Data Center Director; confirm which fabric designs, releases, and operational functions are included in your contract.
Juniper’s automation overview describes event correlation, anomaly detection, and closed-loop assurance in its examples. Ask which actions are closed loop, which require approval, and which domains are excluded. Cisco describes network-wide activation across physical and virtual infrastructure in its intent-based model; validate the statement against your specific controller, device families, and software versions.
Test mixed and unsupported equipment
Include at least one device or appliance that the platform does not manage natively. Verify whether it can ingest telemetry, represent the device in policy, alert on drift, and preserve a safe boundary around changes to supported devices. A platform that works only when every component is homogeneous may require a migration project that is larger than the automation benefit.
3. Test assurance against user and application outcomes
Assurance is more than a dashboard of device health. A useful layer continuously compares intended policy with observed state and service evidence, then explains the difference in terms an operator can act on.
Inspect telemetry and evidence
Ask the vendor to identify every signal used for a test case: interface counters, flow records, routing state, configuration snapshots, synthetic probes, endpoint data, logs, identity events, and application measurements. Determine collection intervals, retention, clock requirements, encryption, and what happens when telemetry is delayed or missing.
For each alert, require a timeline that shows the first deviation, affected objects, correlated events, confidence, and evidence supporting the suspected cause. Ask how the system distinguishes a transient spike from a persistent fault and how it records an operator’s dismissal or correction of a finding.

HPE describes service-level expectations, application assurance, prioritized Marvis Actions, and predictive-maintenance features for its Data Center Assurance offering. Treat these as capabilities to demonstrate. Ask the vendor to define the service-level calculation, sampling method, baseline period, and treatment of missing data. Confirm that a score can be traced to an actual user or application path rather than inferred only from device counters.

Cisco describes analytics and machine learning that check whether intent was applied and whether outcomes are being achieved. Juniper describes event correlation and anomaly detection in campus, branch, and data-center examples. For all such claims, test false positives, false negatives, seasonal changes, planned maintenance, and an intentionally injected fault.
Check history, auditability, and uncertainty
Operators need to see what changed, when it changed, who approved it, and whether the observed result matched the prediction. Verify that the platform retains evidence long enough for incident reviews and compliance investigations. When confidence is low or data sources disagree, the interface should show uncertainty and defer an automated action rather than present a precise-looking conclusion without support.
4. Separate recommendations from autonomous remediation
“AI-driven” insight can describe several very different control boundaries. Put each proposed use case into one of these categories:
Recommended Free Tools
| Control level | What the platform does | Questions to validate |
|---|---|---|
| Read-only insight | Detects a deviation and displays evidence. | What telemetry supports it, how are false positives handled, and can the finding be exported to the incident system? |
| Recommendation | Suggests a next step for an operator. | Can the operator inspect the proposed commands, assumptions, and expected impact before acting? |
| Approved change | Generates or stages a configuration after a human decision. | Which role approves, what pre-checks run, and how are partial failures and rollback handled? |
| Autonomous action | Applies a change without per-event approval. | What guardrails, confidence threshold, permission scope, rate limit, maintenance window, and emergency stop exist? |
For every autonomous or semi-autonomous action, document the trigger, allowed devices, maximum change size, dependency checks, rollback method, logging, and behavior during a controller outage or network partition. Test a low-confidence case and an action that would violate a higher-priority policy. A safe system should pause, escalate, or revert instead of forcing a change.
HPE and Juniper use terms such as self-driving actions and network adaptation in product descriptions. Those terms should be demonstrated under controlled conditions; they are not evidence that every domain operates autonomously. Include security and change-management owners in the approval decision.
5. Compare deployment, security, and operating ownership
Deployment architecture changes the risk, cost, and skills required to operate the platform. Document the answer for each product rather than inferring it from a vendor’s broader portfolio.
Cloud and on-site patterns
HPE describes its Data Center Assurance service as cloud-based. Ask what telemetry leaves the environment, where it is processed and stored, how tenant isolation works, what identity provider integrations are available, and how the service behaves if the management connection is unavailable.

Security and data handling questions
- Which identities can read telemetry, create policy, approve changes, or enable autonomous actions?
- Are management APIs, stored credentials, and telemetry encrypted in transit and at rest?
- Can sensitive payloads, endpoint identifiers, or application names be masked or excluded?
- What outbound connections, certificates, proxies, and DNS services are required?
- How are software updates signed, scheduled, tested, and rolled back?
- What audit records are available to security information and event-management systems?
- Which functions continue during a cloud, controller, or inter-site connectivity outage?
Clarify operational ownership
Define who owns the platform, integrations, model tuning, incident triage, and recovery when automation fails. Include network operations, security, application owners, service management, and procurement in the operating model. A platform that detects a fault but cannot open an actionable incident, identify an owner, or preserve evidence may add another console without reducing resolution time.
6. Build a controlled proof of concept
A PoC should test your outcomes and failure modes, not reproduce a scripted product tour. Agree on the test plan and acceptance thresholds before access is granted.
Record a baseline
Capture at least these measures for a representative period:
- Time to detect and diagnose a known issue.
- Engineering effort and elapsed time for a normal policy change.
- Change failure rate, rollback time, and number of devices requiring manual correction.
- Policy drift between intended and observed configuration.
- User and application indicators such as reachability, latency, loss, and service-level compliance.
- Alert volume, false-positive rate, and the percentage of findings with actionable root-cause evidence.
Record the collection method, time window, topology, and maintenance events so a later comparison is meaningful.
Use representative test cases
- Normal change: express a segmentation or reachability requirement, review the generated policy, deploy it to a defined scope, and verify the service outcome.
- Intent conflict: submit two requirements with different priorities or overlapping exceptions. Confirm that the platform identifies the conflict before deployment and records the resolution.
- Known fault: introduce a controlled link, routing, or policy fault. Measure detection, diagnosis quality, recommended action, and time to restore service.
- Out-of-band change: alter a device manually. Check drift detection, severity, evidence, and whether the platform can reconcile or safely preserve the manual change.
- Unsupported component: include a device outside native management scope. Verify the visibility, alerting, and policy boundary promised by the vendor.
- Rollback: deploy a deliberately reversible change, trigger rollback, and confirm the final state and audit trail on every affected device.
- Controller or connectivity loss: interrupt the management path. Observe whether forwarding continues, what telemetry is buffered, and which actions are blocked until control is restored.
Set acceptance thresholds
Write pass/fail criteria such as maximum diagnosis time, maximum change effort, permitted false-positive rate, required rollback completion, and minimum service-level compliance. Do not accept a vendor case study as proof of your result. Ask for customer references with comparable domains and independently reproducible measurements, and label vendor-supplied figures as such.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Compare shortlisted platforms on the same axes
Use one scorecard for every candidate. Weight the categories according to your highest-risk outcomes rather than giving every feature equal importance.
| Axis | What to compare | Evidence to require |
|---|---|---|
| Domain and inventory coverage | Campus, branch, WAN, data center, cloud, and exact hardware/software versions. | Current compatibility matrix and a demonstration using your inventory. |
| Intent model | How requirements are expressed, translated, conflict-checked, versioned, and audited. | Policy diff, approval record, conflict test, and rollback evidence. |
| Automation boundary | Read-only insight, recommendation, approved change, or autonomous action. | Permission model, guardrails, confidence behavior, emergency stop, and recovery test. |
| Assurance quality | Telemetry breadth, application outcomes, anomaly detection, root-cause evidence, and false-positive handling. | Timeline for an injected fault and exportable audit data. |
| Deployment and data handling | Cloud or on-site architecture, telemetry movement, resilience, identity, and security controls. | Data-flow diagram, retention policy, outage behavior, and current support statement. |
| Operations and economics | Integrations, skills, process changes, implementation, support, licensing, and value against baseline. | Runbook, service commitments, complete bill of materials, and PoC measurements. |
Score only evidence that matches the requirement. A feature marked “available” without your model, release, integration, or control conditions should remain unverified until demonstrated.

A cited deployment overview describes an on-site three-VM deployment, but that documentation is several years old; confirm current architecture, support status, sizing, and commercial terms before relying on it in a design.
Procurement questions that prevent surprises
Request a written scope that names every included domain, model, software release, integration, user tier, telemetry source, and autonomous function. Ask which capabilities require separate products, premium licenses, professional services, or a cloud subscription. Obtain current pricing and support terms for your geography and contract duration; capability pages do not establish comparable costs.
Require implementation responsibilities, training, escalation paths, service-level commitments, data-retention terms, exit procedures, and assistance exporting policies and historical telemetry. Confirm whether a subscription lapse leaves forwarding and security policy intact and how you recover administrative access.

Decision rule
Select a platform only when it passes the PoC for your highest-value outcomes, covers the required inventory without hidden manual work, exposes evidence that operators can trust, and keeps automation within an explicitly approved risk boundary. If a vendor cannot demonstrate translation, activation, assurance, and recovery on your topology, classify the capability as unverified rather than awarding credit for the label “self-driving.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a natural-language network interface proof that a platform is intent-based?
No. Test whether the platform exposes assumptions, detects conflicting requirements, creates explicit versioned policy, and shows the resulting device behavior before deployment.
Should autonomous remediation be enabled during a proof of concept?
Only for tightly bounded, reversible cases with least-privilege permissions, confidence thresholds, maintenance windows, complete logging, and a tested rollback or emergency stop. Start with read-only and approved-change modes.
How can I compare cloud-based and on-site platforms fairly?
Score both against the same data-flow, outage, identity, telemetry-retention, security, operating-effort, and recovery requirements, then include those controls and costs in the PoC and contract scope.
