To evaluate satellite-communications stocks before buying AST SpaceMobile, separate what the company has already demonstrated from what it still plans to deliver. AST SpaceMobile is building a low-Earth-orbit network intended to connect ordinary, unmodified mobile phones through mobile-network operators (MNOs). The investment case depends on four linked questions: can it deploy enough satellites for useful coverage, can demonstrations become reliable paid service, can operator relationships produce recurring revenue, and can the company finance construction without damaging shareholder returns?
The latest filing available for this assessment is AST SpaceMobile’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, filed August 10, 2026, supplemented by its 2025 Form 10-K filed March 2, 2026. Those filings document progress and risks, but they do not establish a current share price, valuation, cash runway, dilution calculation, or a sourced peer comparison. Refresh those items before making an investment decision.
What AST SpaceMobile is trying to build
AST SpaceMobile’s planned core business is a direct-to-device cellular network. Its BlueBird low-Earth-orbit satellites are designed to communicate directly with standard smartphones, without a special handset or satellite terminal. The company plans to sell access primarily through wholesale arrangements with MNOs, which would then incorporate the service into their customer offerings. It also pursues government applications.

A customer would ideally use an existing phone and an operator’s commercial plan, with satellite coverage supplementing terrestrial towers where the operator’s network cannot reach. That convenience creates a large potential addressable market, but it also makes the project dependent on satellite capacity, spectrum arrangements, operator integration, handset behavior, regulatory permissions and a service experience good enough for paying subscribers.

AST’s 2025 Form 10-K warns: “We have a limited operating history and operate in a rapidly evolving industry, which makes it difficult to evaluate our business and future prospects and increases the risk of your investment.” Treat that sentence as a description of the evidence problem: a promising architecture and demonstrations are not the same as a mature operating business.
First, score physical deployment against dated milestones
Count satellites by stage rather than using a single headline number. A launch is one event; deployment, commissioning, validated payload performance and contribution to usable coverage are later gates. The Q2 2026 filing provides this reported sequence:

The BB7 loss is particularly useful for due diligence because it illustrates why a launch count can overstate progress. A rocket can depart successfully while a spacecraft ends up in an orbit too low for continued operation. For every future launch, record the launch date, orbital outcome, deployment date, commissioning status and any stated role in coverage.

Maintain a spreadsheet with one row per satellite and separate columns for launch, deployment, commissioning, payload tests, inter-satellite or ground-network integration, and declared coverage contribution. Add the source filing date and distinguish completed events from management guidance. If a later filing changes a date or status, preserve the previous entry rather than silently replacing it; schedule slippage is itself information about execution risk.
Ask what “coverage” means
Broad geographic claims can hide a narrow operating window. Ask whether the stated coverage is continuous or intermittent, what elevation angle and link budget are assumed, how many simultaneous users can be supported, and whether the coverage applies to commercial customers or only to a test. A satellite can pass over a location without providing a useful consumer connection if spectrum, network integration, capacity or regulatory permission is missing.
Separate technical demonstrations from a launched service
AST SpaceMobile’s Q2 filing describes tests and calls using unmodified smartphones with partners, including a company-reported peak speed of 98.9 Mbps in a test to a standard unmodified smartphone. That number is a test result under particular conditions, not a typical customer speed, a guaranteed minimum or proof of continuous service.

The same filing states that SpaceMobile Service had not yet launched and had generated no revenue. Therefore, evaluate demonstrations as technical evidence only. They answer questions such as whether a signal can be established and data can be transferred in a controlled scenario. They do not answer whether a customer can connect whenever needed, whether a call remains stable while a satellite moves, how capacity is shared, or whether operators can support billing, emergency handling and customer care.

Questions that turn a demo into an operating test
- Was the test conducted with a production-intent satellite and payload configuration?
- Which handset model, carrier network, frequency band and geographic location were used?
- Was the device stationary or moving, and how long did the connection remain usable?
- What were latency, call-completion, handover and dropped-session results?
- How many users could share the same satellite beam at the demonstrated performance?
- Was the test available to ordinary subscribers through a commercial plan?
Until filings disclose those operating measures, keep the 98.9 Mbps figure in the “demonstrated peak” column of your analysis, not in a forecast of customer experience.
Follow the path from partnerships to recurring revenue
AST disclosed relationships with AT&T, Verizon, Vodafone/SatCo and Saudi Telecom Company, and said it had partnerships with more than 60 MNOs. The number is company-reported and should not be interpreted as 60 paying, active-service customers. A partnership can represent a memorandum, a testing relationship, a spectrum arrangement, a distribution intention or a more developed commercial contract.
Use a four-stage partnership test
- Contract and rights: Identify what each agreement actually commits, including term, territory, exclusivity, termination rights, spectrum access and any milestones.
- Technical integration: Check whether the operator has integrated authentication, billing, roaming, network operations and customer-support processes.
- Commercial availability: Determine whether a named plan is available to ordinary subscribers, in which countries and with which handsets.
- Economic proof: Look for recognized service revenue, subscriber or usage indicators, revenue-sharing terms and evidence that customers are renewing or expanding use.
AST’s Q2 report says recognized revenue came from government-related performance obligations and from sales of gateway equipment, software and related services to MNOs. Those sources are different from revenue generated by the planned SpaceMobile Service. Do not treat equipment or government work as proof that the wholesale cellular model has reached recurring commercial scale.
Read revenue by source, not just the total
For each reporting period, classify revenue as government work, equipment, software, related MNO services or SpaceMobile Service. Then compare the mix over time. A rising total driven by one-time equipment deliveries may have a different valuation implication from usage-based service revenue. Also check contract liabilities, remaining performance obligations and collection terms where disclosed; booked work is not automatically cash received or a durable customer relationship.

AST’s 2025 Form 10-K estimated average direct-material and launch costs of approximately $21 million to $23 million per Block 2 satellite for a constellation of more than 90 satellites. This is the company’s planning estimate for that stated configuration, not an independently verified total program cost. It does not by itself capture every corporate, ground-segment, insurance, financing, regulatory or operating expense that may be required.

Use the estimate as a scale indicator. At more than 90 satellites, even the direct-material and launch component represents a multibillion-dollar capital requirement when multiplied across the planned fleet. Actual spending can change with design revisions, launch prices, production rates, delays, failures and constellation changes.
Build a financing worksheet from each new filing
- Cash and restricted cash at the reporting date.
- Operating cash use for the latest quarter and year-to-date period.
- Capital expenditures and satellite-production commitments.
- Debt principal, interest rates, covenants and maturity dates.
- Convertible securities, conversion terms and potential share issuance.
- Recent equity issuance, remaining authorization and any at-the-market program.
- Launch reservations, deposits, cancellation rights and payment schedules.
The available material does not establish a current cash-runway calculation or quantify current dilution. Calculate those only after collecting the latest balance sheet, cash-flow statement, debt footnotes, equity filings and launch commitments. A runway estimate should show its assumptions rather than divide cash by one historical quarter and present the result as a forecast.
Stress-test execution, not just the base plan
Model at least three cases: launches and production on schedule, a delay that pushes service revenue to a later period, and a case involving a launch loss or satellite replacement. For each case, estimate additional financing needs, interest or dilution, and the effect of delayed revenue on liquidity. The point is not to create a precise target price; it is to see whether the company can reach the next operational milestone without relying on an unpriced financing event.

Treat spectrum and regulation as separate gates
The Q2 filing reports FCC authorization for a 248-satellite network. That authorization is important, but it is not a blanket permission to provide service everywhere. AST also describes contractual spectrum dependencies and conditions relevant to a spectrum-rights transaction.
Analyze three separate permissions for every target market:
- Network authorization: Whether the relevant regulator allows the satellite constellation and associated operations.
- Spectrum rights: Which entity controls the frequencies, what contractual access AST has, and whether conditions to a spectrum transaction have been satisfied.
- Service permission: Whether direct-to-device commercial service is allowed in the specific country or territory, including handset, roaming, emergency-service and licensing requirements.
A U.S. network authorization does not establish global service clearance. Create a market-by-market table listing the jurisdiction, frequency band, license holder, permitted use, operator counterparty and remaining conditions. Revisit it when a filing reports a new approval, an amended agreement or a delay in closing a spectrum transaction.

Value the stock without pretending missing data is known
A credible valuation requires a dated share price, current share count, debt and cash, expected financing, and an operating forecast tied to coverage and subscribers. The available filings do not provide a current valuation basis, so it is not possible here to say that the stock is cheap, expensive or fairly priced.
Use scenario-based questions
- How many operational satellites are needed before the first target markets receive dependable service?
- What wholesale price or revenue share could an MNO earn, and how much would remain after satellite operations and network costs?
- How quickly could subscriber usage grow after commercial launch?
- How much additional capital is needed before operating cash flow can fund expansion?
- What probability should be assigned to schedule delays, launch failures, regulatory conditions and replacement satellites?
Build a range of outcomes rather than one terminal assumption. In a downside case, delay service revenue and add financing costs. In a base case, tie subscriber growth to demonstrated coverage and operator availability. In an upside case, require explicit evidence of broad coverage, paid adoption and improving unit economics rather than simply assigning a higher multiple to a technical milestone.
Do not mix accounting revenue with market potential
A large potential user base or a long list of partners is not a substitute for recognized service revenue. Keep three lines separate in your model: revenue already reported, contracted or probable future work, and speculative market opportunity. Only the first line is historical performance; the other two require probability adjustments and continuing verification.
Compare satellite-communications stocks on identical operating axes
When you compare AST SpaceMobile with another satellite-communications company, avoid a chart that places unrelated businesses side by side solely because they use satellites. Use the same questions for every candidate:

This assessment does not include authoritative peer filings or dated market data. Name and compare specific competitors only after gathering those primary sources and applying the same definitions.
A practical AST SpaceMobile due-diligence workflow
- Set the information date. Record the latest 10-Q, 10-K, 8-K and relevant regulatory filings you are using. Market prices and share counts must carry the same date.
- Update the satellite ledger. Mark every spacecraft as launched, deployed, commissioned or contributing to coverage, and record losses such as BB7 separately.
- Verify service status. Look for a stated commercial launch, available plans, supported devices, territories and service-quality metrics. Keep test results separate.
- Map each operator relationship. Record agreement type, spectrum role, integration stage, launch dependency and evidence of paid customer availability.
- Reconcile revenue. Classify reported revenue by government, equipment, software, related MNO work and SpaceMobile Service.
- Refresh the capital plan. Update cash, restricted cash, operating cash use, capital expenditure, debt, convertibles, equity issuance and launch obligations.
- Check each regulatory gate. Confirm network authorization, spectrum rights and country-specific service permissions independently.
- Construct scenarios. Link satellite cadence and coverage to subscriber, revenue and financing assumptions; stress delays and launch losses.
- Only then examine valuation. Use a dated price and share count, and state which scenario the market price appears to assume.
Red flags that deserve a closer filing review
- A rising partnership count without disclosed service availability, subscriber adoption or recurring revenue.
- Satellite targets repeated across filings while launch, deployment or commissioning dates slip.
- Technical speed claims presented without test conditions, duration, capacity or geographic limits.
- Revenue growth concentrated in equipment or government obligations while the planned cellular service remains pre-revenue.
- New financing announced without a clear explanation of dilution, conversion terms or use of proceeds.
- A valuation argument based on an old share price, an unverified share count or a peer multiple from a different business model.
- One regulatory authorization described as if it automatically grants spectrum and commercial service rights worldwide.
What the current evidence supports—and what it does not
The filings support a conclusion that AST SpaceMobile is making tangible progress toward a direct-to-device network: satellites have been deployed, additional launches have occurred, tests with unmodified smartphones have been reported, and the company has established relationships with numerous MNOs. They also show that the planned SpaceMobile Service had not launched and had generated no revenue as of the Q2 2026 filing.

The unresolved questions are the ones that determine investment returns: the pace and cost of reaching useful coverage, conversion of partnerships into paid service, spectrum and country approvals, customer demand, operating economics and the amount and terms of future financing. Resolve those with updated filings and market data rather than inferring a bullish or bearish valuation from a single technical milestone.
