The best payment provider is the one that fits your players, transaction mix, game mechanics and legal responsibilities—not the one with the largest marketing number. Build a shortlist by comparing merchant-of-record terms, country and payment-method coverage, fully loaded fees, authorization performance, fraud controls, integration effort and operational ownership under the same assumptions.

Start with a payment-provider decision brief

Before requesting quotes, write down the facts every provider must price and approve. A provider cannot give a meaningful answer if it only knows that you operate a game.

  • Revenue model: one-time game sales, downloadable content, virtual currency, transferable items, subscriptions, battle passes, creator payouts or a combination.
  • Player markets: countries you serve now, countries planned for the next 12–24 months, local currencies and the payment methods players expect in each market.
  • Transaction profile: expected monthly transaction count, average and high-value basket, authorization rate, refund rate, dispute rate and recurring-payment share.
  • Platforms and channels: PC, console, mobile, direct web store, in-game checkout, launcher and any account-linking flow.
  • Legal structure: the entity that will sell to players, collect indirect tax, issue refunds, answer support requests and handle disputes.
  • Game-economy risks: whether items can be traded, gifted, resold or converted into money; whether the game includes randomized rewards, prizes or cash-out features.

Use one version of this brief for every request for proposal. Otherwise, a low quote may simply reflect fewer countries, fewer local methods or services that your studio would have to buy elsewhere.

1. Decide whether you need a PSP, a merchant of record, or both

Payment service provider (PSP)

A PSP supplies payment processing, acquiring connections, checkout components and related tools while your company generally remains the seller. Your entity may still own tax registration and calculation, customer support, refund decisions, chargeback responses and compliance obligations. The exact division is contractual, so ask the provider to list each responsibility by country and payment method.

#1 Best Overall

  • With Square Terminal, you can ring up sales, accept payments, and print receipts, all with one device. Use it at the counter or ring up customers anywhere in your store.
  • Accept all major credit and debit cards and pay one low rate with no hidden fees and no long-term contracts.
  • Process chip cards in just two seconds.
  • Get your money as soon as the next business day.
  • Use it cordlessly with the built-in battery, designed to last all day.

Merchant of record (MoR)

An MoR sells to the player in its own name and typically assumes defined duties such as indirect-tax calculation and remittance, payment compliance, refunds, disputes and customer support. It can reduce your operating load, but the agreement may constrain pricing, branding, settlement timing, data access and the markets or game mechanics you can use.

Example: read the responsibility split, not just the product label

Xsolla’s PSP page presents the developer as merchant of record while Xsolla processes payments. The page lists tokenization, refunds, indirect-tax calculation, reporting, reconciliation and global payouts, but also says the developer retains responsibilities including fraud monitoring, customer support, refunds and chargebacks, and tax management. Treat this as an example of one PSP arrangement, not a universal definition. Review the current contract for your merchant entity and countries at Xsolla’s Payment Service Provider page.

Responsibility Questions to ask before signing
Seller of record Which legal entity appears on the customer receipt in each country? Can that change by payment method?
Indirect tax Who calculates, collects, files and remits tax? Who handles audits and rate changes?
Refunds and support Who sets policy, approves exceptions and answers payment-related tickets? What service levels apply?
Disputes and chargebacks Who submits evidence, pays fees and absorbs losses? Can the studio review the evidence before submission?
Data and portability Which transaction, customer and token data can you export if you migrate?
Settlement In which currencies and on what schedule are funds paid? Are reserves, rolling holds or minimum thresholds possible?

2. Map coverage to where your players actually live

Do not choose from a headline count of methods or currencies. Build a country-by-country matrix containing your player share, preferred payment methods, settlement currency, local acquiring requirement and fallback options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adyen’s gaming page advertises more than 200 payment methods and more than 150 currencies. Xsolla’s product page advertises more than 700 methods, 130 currencies and 200 geographies. These are provider-published figures with different counting conventions; they are not a like-for-like performance ranking. Check the exact methods live for your merchant entity, game category and target countries.

Coverage check What to verify in writing
Country availability Can the provider onboard your legal entity and game in every target market, including future expansion countries?
Payment methods Which cards, bank methods, wallets, prepaid options and local schemes are available at launch, and who controls activation?
Currency display Can prices be displayed in local currency while settling in your chosen currency? What exchange-rate source and markup apply?
Local acquiring Does the provider acquire locally where approval rates or regulation make that important?
Method-specific rules Do recurring billing, refunds, partial captures, delayed fulfilment or digital-goods rules differ by method?

Ask for a live-method list rather than a brochure. A method counted in a global total may be unavailable to your entity, restricted to a different product type or unable to support subscriptions and refunds.

3. Compare total cost on identical assumptions

Payment cost is more than the advertised processing rate. Request a quote using the same transaction count, average basket, countries, currency mix, card and local-method share, refund rate, dispute rate and recurring-payment volume for every provider.

Adyen’s UK pricing page describes a fixed processing fee plus a payment-method fee, with other products priced separately. It also says additional rates of up to 3% may apply to gaming, gambling, travel and financial-services categories. The page is UK-focused, and a displayed UK or method-specific rate must not be transplanted into another market. Use Adyen’s pricing page as a fee-structure reference, then obtain a merchant-specific schedule.

Build a fully loaded cost model

Put every recurring and event-based charge into one worksheet:

Total payment cost = processing fees + payment-method fees + cross-border fees + currency-conversion spread + fraud/risk products + dispute fees + refund fees + subscription or billing fees + platform or account fees + taxes on provider services

For each line, record whether the fee is per transaction, percentage-based, monthly, one-time, method-specific or negotiable. Separate fees paid by the player from fees deducted from your settlement. Model high-refund months and a temporary dispute spike rather than only the average month.

Questions that expose hidden cost

  • Is pricing different for digital goods, subscriptions, virtual currency or transferable items?
  • Are authorization retries, account-updater services, token storage and 3-D Secure included?
  • What are the rates for refunds, partial refunds, chargebacks and representment?
  • Does currency conversion occur on authorization, settlement or both? Is the provider’s rate independently observable?
  • Are reserves, rolling holds, payout delays or minimum monthly commitments possible?
  • What happens to pricing when volume, countries or payment-method mix changes?

4. Measure authorization and checkout quality

A payment that is technically supported but repeatedly declined is not useful coverage. Ask providers to report approval rates by country, method, issuer region, device and transaction type. Require a definition of “authorization rate”—for example, whether retries and soft declines are included.

Compare how each platform handles intelligent routing, local acquiring, retries, authentication and localized checkout. Adyen highlights intelligent routing, local acquiring, player-preferred methods, fraud detection and authentication for gaming at its gaming payment solution page. These are capabilities to validate in your own pilot, not guaranteed outcomes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Checkout questions

  • Can the checkout be embedded in your web store, opened as a hosted page or used inside an approved in-app flow?
  • Does it support account linking so a successful payment grants the correct game account, region and item?
  • Can returning players use stored credentials or tokens without your systems handling raw card data?
  • How are step-up authentication and failed authentication communicated to the player?
  • Can prices, taxes, payment-method ordering and consent language be localized?
  • What happens when a player changes device, loses connection or repeats a purchase?

5. Evaluate fraud controls as part of conversion and game-economy protection

Gaming fraud is not limited to stolen cards. Stripe’s fraud guidance, last updated April 19, 2026, identifies small-transaction card testing, stolen-card purchases of transferable items, account takeover and friendly fraud. Promotion abuse and rapid movement of virtual goods can create losses even when the original payment passes.

Use Stripe’s gaming-fraud overview to build a threat list, then ask every provider how its controls address those threats. A strong system should let you tune risk rather than simply block suspicious-looking players.

Risk capabilities to compare

  • Signals: device, IP, behavioral, velocity, account age, payment history and links between accounts.
  • Authentication: configurable step-up flows and support for regional authentication requirements.
  • Rules and models: allowlists, blocklists, velocity limits, item-value thresholds and test environments.
  • Disputes: evidence collection, reason-code handling, representment workflow and visibility into outcomes.
  • Refund controls: approval permissions, duplicate-purchase detection and revocation of virtual goods after a refund.
  • Game controls: account recovery, trade locks, gifting limits and delayed delivery for high-risk or transferable items.

Measure false declines as carefully as fraud loss. A provider that blocks legitimate players may reduce chargebacks while lowering conversion and lifetime value. Ask for a dashboard that separates issuer declines, risk declines, authentication failures and technical errors.

6. Check support for your monetization model

List every purchase type your game uses now and may add later. One-time purchases, subscriptions, in-game items, battle passes, downloadable content and creator or partner payouts can require different APIs and accounting treatments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stripe’s gaming offering describes one-time purchases, subscriptions, in-game items, local payment methods, in-app payment and direct web-store checkout. It also lists Smart Retries, Radar, Billing, creator payouts and a Managed Payments option that includes tax collection and remittance, fraud and risk, dispute handling and customer support. Details and eligibility must be confirmed for your entity and channel at Stripe for Gaming.

Monetization need Acceptance criteria
Subscriptions or battle passes Tokenized recurring charges, account-plan changes, grace periods, retries, cancellations and proration.
Virtual currency Idempotent fulfillment, duplicate protection, refund reversal and ledger reconciliation.
Transferable items Risk rules that account for item liquidity, delayed delivery options and post-dispute revocation.
Creator or partner payouts Recipient onboarding, identity checks, split calculations, tax reporting and payout-country coverage.
Regional pricing Local-price tables, tax-inclusive display where required, controlled exchange-rate updates and audit history.

Disclose game mechanics during underwriting. A provider’s general gaming support does not prove approval for cash-out, trading, randomized items, prizes or other features that can alter regulatory and risk treatment.

7. Assess integration and day-to-day operations

Technical fit

Compare APIs, SDKs, hosted checkout, webhooks, tokenization, sandbox behavior and support for your game engine, storefront and backend language. Confirm whether the provider’s documentation covers purchase creation, asynchronous payment states, refunds, disputes, subscription changes and account reconciliation. Xsolla’s developer documentation is available at its developer portal; use it to assess implementation scope rather than assuming all products share the same integration.

Operational fit

  • Reconciliation: Can finance match orders, refunds, disputes, settlements and provider fees to your game ledger?
  • Reporting: Are exports available by country, method, currency, tax, account and transaction status?
  • Support: Is there 24/7 incident support, a named escalation path and support in your operating time zones?
  • Resilience: What are uptime commitments, status communication and failover options?
  • Migration: Can tokens, customer consents, subscriptions and dispute history be moved if you leave?
  • Access control: Are refunds, risk-rule changes and exports protected by roles, approvals and audit logs?

Include the cost of operating responsibilities that remain with your studio. A lower processing rate can be more expensive if it requires tax specialists, a larger support team, manual dispute work or custom reconciliation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Use provider evidence without turning marketing into a ranking

Stripe

Stripe presents a broad gaming stack covering payments, Billing, local methods, in-app and direct web-store checkout, Radar, Smart Retries, creator payouts and Managed Payments. Its gaming page reports that Stripe Billing recovered 55% of failed payments in 2025. That is a Stripe-reported Billing figure, not an independent gaming benchmark or a forecast for your title. Ask for definitions, eligible transactions and results for your own payment mix.

Adyen

Adyen emphasizes routing, local acquiring, authentication, fraud tools, direct-to-consumer checkout, more than 200 payment methods and more than 150 currencies on its gaming page. Validate which of those are available to your merchant entity and whether settlement, support and pricing meet your requirements. Its public UK pricing page separately describes fixed processing and payment-method fees and the possibility of additional gaming-category rates.

Xsolla

Xsolla advertises more than 700 payment methods, 130 currencies and 200 geographies on its product page, plus anti-fraud, authentication, regional pricing, an in-game store and subscription products. The counts are vendor claims and should be reduced to a country-and-method list for your launch. Its PSP presentation is especially important to review because it shows the developer retaining merchant-of-record duties while Xsolla supplies payment infrastructure.

Xsolla–Adyen partnership scope

On August 14, 2025, Xsolla announced an Adyen partnership for Xsolla PSP. The announcement described Hong Kong as the initial eligible merchant-registration location and phased expansion into Europe, Singapore and the United States as regional licenses were secured. Because eligibility can change, confirm current availability directly using the dated announcement and the provider’s current onboarding team.

9. Run a controlled pilot before committing

A pilot should test the same payment mix and player markets across shortlisted providers. Do not compare one provider’s worldwide marketing metric with another provider’s narrow test.

  1. Define the baseline: Record approval, completion, refund, dispute, fraud-decision, support-contact and settlement-reconciliation rates for the current flow.
  2. Choose representative traffic: Include the countries, methods, devices, currencies, purchase sizes and recurring transactions that matter to your business.
  3. Keep game logic constant: Use identical pricing, authentication policy, fulfillment timing, fraud thresholds and account controls where technically possible.
  4. Instrument every outcome: Distinguish issuer declines, risk declines, authentication failures, timeouts, duplicate orders, refunds and chargebacks.
  5. Test operations: Perform a refund, partial refund, dispute evidence submission, subscription failure, payout reconciliation and data export.
  6. Review player impact: Check checkout time, localization, error messages, support volume and whether legitimate players are blocked.
  7. Model scenarios: Recalculate total cost for normal volume, a high-refund launch, a dispute spike and expansion into each planned market.

Use your own results to set a decision threshold. Vendor performance figures can guide questions, but they are not comparable forecasts unless scope, dates, traffic and definitions match.

10. Send every provider the same due-diligence checklist

Request written answers and attach them to the commercial quote.

  • Will you approve our exact game, mechanics, platforms and sales channels?
  • Who is seller or merchant of record in every target country?
  • Which taxes, refunds, support tickets, disputes and compliance tasks remain with us?
  • Which payment methods and settlement currencies are live for our legal entity?
  • Provide the complete fee schedule, including method, cross-border, conversion, refund, dispute, risk, subscription, payout and account fees.
  • What reserves, rolling holds, payout delays, minimums or termination triggers may apply?
  • How are approval rates measured, and can we segment them by country, method and decline reason?
  • Which game-specific fraud signals, rules, authentication options and dispute tools are included?
  • How are transferable goods, account takeovers, promotion abuse and friendly fraud handled?
  • Which APIs, SDKs, plugins, webhooks, sandbox functions and reporting exports are supported?
  • How are recurring billing, retries, token updates, cancellations, proration and failed-payment recovery handled?
  • What are support hours, incident response targets, escalation contacts and status-page procedures?
  • Can we export tokens, subscriptions, customer consents, transaction records and dispute history on exit?
  • What notice, migration assistance and data-retention rules apply when the agreement ends?

11. Avoid common selection mistakes

Choosing by the largest coverage number

A global method count does not show whether the methods your players use are available, affordable and suitable for subscriptions or refunds. Replace the count with a verified country matrix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing unlike prices

A UK card example, a local-wallet quote and a blended global rate cannot be ranked without the same volume and mix. Require a line-by-line quote under shared assumptions.

Assuming “gaming” means every game mechanic is approved

Cash-out, trading, prizes, randomized items and transferable goods can change underwriting and compliance. Describe them early and obtain written approval.

Ignoring the cost of retained responsibilities

A PSP arrangement may leave your studio with tax, support, refund, fraud and chargeback work. Price staffing, tooling and legal overhead alongside provider fees.

Treating marketing metrics as guarantees

Coverage, recovery and performance claims are vendor-described. Ask for definitions and validate outcomes with a controlled pilot using your own traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Failing to plan the exit

Payment migration is difficult when tokens, subscriptions, consents and dispute records cannot move. Negotiate portability, notice periods and transition support before launch.

12. Turn the evidence into a weighted decision

Score each provider against criteria that reflect your business rather than using a generic winner. A studio concentrated in one region may weight local approval and settlement more heavily; a global live-service game may weight methods, recurring billing, fraud tuning and tax operations.

Category Evidence to score
Market fit Verified methods, currencies, acquiring and onboarding approval in each priority country.
Economics Fully loaded cost under normal and stress scenarios, including reserves and conversion.
Conversion Approval, authentication, retry, localization and checkout results from the pilot.
Risk Fraud loss, false declines, dispute handling and controls for the game economy.
Product fit One-time, recurring, virtual-goods, regional-pricing and payout requirements.
Operations Integration effort, reconciliation, reporting, support, resilience and retained workload.
Strategic flexibility Contract scope, data portability, migration terms and ability to add markets or methods.

Choose the provider that wins on the criteria your business cannot compromise, then document the trade-offs. If two providers are close, a dual-provider strategy can reduce concentration risk, but only if your team can operate routing, reconciliation, refunds and support without creating inconsistent player experiences.

What a good final decision looks like

Your selection record should show the countries and methods covered, the merchant-of-record arrangement, a complete fee model, pilot results, fraud and dispute ownership, integration scope, settlement terms and exit plan. That evidence lets finance, engineering, legal, support and game-design teams approve the same decision—and gives you a defensible basis for renegotiating when your player mix changes.
