Evaluate a methane-conversion catalyst by first identifying its reaction route and intended product, then comparing conversion, product performance, operating conditions, and stability together. A methane-conversion percentage on its own is not a meaningful ranking: steam reforming, dry reforming, and oxidative coupling make different products, use different feeds, and are measured against different performance goals.
Start with the reaction route and the product you need
“Methane conversion” covers several distinct catalytic processes. A catalyst designed to make synthesis gas is not directly comparable with one designed to make C2 hydrocarbons or oxygenates. The target product determines which metrics belong beside methane conversion and what a useful operating temperature means.
- Steam reforming uses steam and targets synthesis gas, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. A useful comparison therefore includes the H2/CO ratio and product selectivity or yield, not just how much methane disappears.
- Dry reforming uses carbon dioxide as the oxidant and also targets synthesis gas. The relevant record includes both methane and CO2 conversion, the syngas product profile, and stability under the selected feed and temperature.
- Oxidative coupling of methane (OCM) targets C2 hydrocarbons. Methane conversion must be considered alongside C2 selectivity and C2 yield: converting methane into unwanted products does not meet the target.
- Direct oxygenate routes may target products such as methanol. Evaluate the desired oxygenate’s selectivity and yield along with methane conversion; a conversion figure alone cannot show whether the desired product formed efficiently.
Methane is difficult to activate: a 2019 review gives a methane C–H bond energy of 434 kJ/mol as context for that challenge. The figure helps explain why catalyst activity and process conditions matter, but it is not a performance score or a temperature requirement for a particular reactor. See Cai and Hu’s review in Energy Science & Engineering.
Normalize the conditions before comparing conversion
A conversion percentage is interpretable only when its denominator and the conditions that produced it are clear. Changes in feed composition, pressure, temperature, or flow can change the observed conversion and product distribution. Different residence times can also make two reported percentages incomparable, even when the catalyst names look similar.

| Record for each study | What to capture | Why it affects the comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Route and objective | Steam reforming, dry reforming, partial oxidation, OCM, or a direct oxygenate route; identify the target product. | Conversion and selectivity answer different questions for different products. |
| Feed | Methane-to-oxidant composition or ratio, other feed components, and any reported impurities. | Feed composition affects reaction performance and can expose a catalyst to deactivating contaminants. |
| Reactor conditions | Pressure, operating temperature, flow or space velocity, reactor configuration, and the flow basis when reported. | These conditions influence conversion and the amount of time reactants spend in contact with the catalyst. |
| Conversion basis | Methane conversion and, where central to the route, conversion of the co-reactant; preserve the denominator and method reported by the study. | A methane percentage alone can conceal whether a second reactant was converted or how the figure was calculated. |
| Product performance | Selectivity and yield for target products; for syngas, include the H2/CO ratio; for coupling, include C2 selectivity and yield. | High methane conversion can coexist with low production of the desired product. |
| Duration and change | Time on stream, changes in conversion and selectivity, and any regeneration procedure. | An initial reading cannot establish whether performance persists. |
| Deactivation evidence | Reported carbon deposition, sintering, poisoning, or other structural characterization; note poison exposure when reported. | Performance loss needs to be interpreted alongside the proposed cause and the conditions of the test. |
| Practical burden | Temperature and documented energy or feed-cleanup requirements. | A conversion result may depend on process inputs that affect whether the operating point is practical. |
Do not silently fill gaps in a paper’s report. If a feed ratio, pressure, flow basis, or test duration is not reported, mark that item as unreported in your working comparison and limit the conclusion accordingly. Do not assume two studies used the same reactor configuration or method because both report a value called “conversion.”
Read conversion, selectivity, and yield as a set
Conversion describes the fraction of a reactant consumed under a stated definition. It does not, by itself, say what products resulted. Selectivity describes how product formation is distributed among products under the study’s stated basis, while yield relates the desired product obtained to the feed or reactant basis defined by the authors. Preserve each paper’s definitions when extracting the metrics; do not treat percentages with different bases as interchangeable.
For synthesis-gas routes, record the hydrogen-to-carbon-monoxide ratio with the product data. For OCM, record methane conversion, C2 selectivity, and C2 yield together. A catalyst with high methane conversion but weak selectivity to the target can be less useful for the stated objective than a lower-conversion catalyst that directs more converted methane to that product. The appropriate balance depends on the process goal; the conversion figure alone cannot settle it.

For routes consuming a second reactant, such as carbon dioxide in dry reforming, record that reactant’s conversion too. It helps show how the two reactants behaved in the particular experiment and prevents a methane-only figure from being mistaken for a complete process result.
Temperature is a condition and a burden, not a score
Operating temperature matters because it is part of the conditions needed to achieve the reported conversion and product profile. It also represents an energy burden. A higher-temperature result is not automatically better, and a lower-temperature result is not automatically more practical: the comparison needs the route, feed, conversion, products, and duration alongside the temperature.
Dry reforming is endothermic, and reviews describe high temperature as important for achieving useful conversion. That context makes temperature particularly important when assessing dry-reforming claims, but it does not establish a universal threshold or prove that one catalyst is superior. A result at a stated temperature must be read with its feed, flow or space velocity, reactor conditions, and measured product performance. Ranjekar and Yadav’s 2021 review assesses dry-reforming catalyst development and efficacy; a separate 2018 review also analyzes dry-reforming catalyst design and performance: Journal of the Indian Chemical Society and Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews.

When comparing temperatures, ask whether the studies used the same reaction route and comparable feed, pressure, reactor, and flow basis. If not, describe the results as indirect. A temperature difference across unlike experiments cannot be attributed to the catalyst alone, and the available review literature does not establish a universal commercial benchmark across all methane-conversion routes.
Interpret reported catalyst examples without turning them into a league table
Two examples summarized in Chen and colleagues’ review illustrate why route and conditions must accompany headline conversion values. They are study-specific results reported in a review, not a controlled head-to-head comparison.
| Reported example | Route and reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 7% Ni–1% Au/Al2O3 | Steam reforming; 84% methane conversion. | This is a reported example for a specific catalyst and route. The figure is not a general catalyst benchmark. |
| 10% Ni/ZrOx–MnOx/SiO2 | Dry reforming at 500 °C; 17.9% methane conversion and 23.1% CO2 conversion. | This is a different route and includes a second-reactant conversion. It is not directly rankable against the steam-reforming result. |
The studies differ in reaction route, and the figures do not establish a shared set of controlled conditions. The 84% value is not evidence that the first formulation outperforms the second; nor does the lower methane-conversion figure prove the reverse. Chen et al.’s review was first published on 11 October 2019, with volume publication in 2020: Catalytic Conversion of Methane at Low Temperatures: A Critical Review.

For OCM, Cai and Hu summarize literature maximum C2 yields of 16–27% with selectivity of 72–82% for conventional oxygen-based OCM. Their review reports a maximum C2 yield of up to 6% for CO2-OCM, with comparable selectivity. These are route-level literature summaries, not guarantees for a new catalyst or figures attributable to one catalyst formulation. They demonstrate why the oxidant and target product belong in the comparison. Source: Cai and Hu, 2019.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Judge durability by retained performance over time
Durability means performance retained over a specified duration under specified feed and operating conditions. An initial conversion measurement establishes activity at that point; it does not establish stability. To evaluate a durability claim, look for time on stream and a record of how conversion and selectivity changed, rather than relying on a statement that a catalyst was “stable.”
- Check the test window. Record the time on stream and the conditions maintained during the test. A durability claim applies to the documented window and feed, not automatically to longer operation or another process environment.
- Track multiple outputs. Compare conversion and target-product selectivity over time. Conversion may remain similar while product distribution changes, so one metric alone can miss a deterioration relevant to the process goal.
- Look for a proposed deactivation mechanism. Note reported carbon deposition, sintering, or poisoning, along with characterization that supports the explanation. Distinguish a measured observation from a proposed cause.
- Include regeneration. If the study regenerates the catalyst, record the procedure and subsequent performance. A result after regeneration answers a different question from uninterrupted operation.
- Keep the feed attached to the claim. Stability on one feed does not demonstrate tolerance to a different mixture or impurity exposure.
Nickel catalysts are widely used for dry reforming because of their activity and low cost, but carbon-related deactivation is a known concern. Alloying and support or promoter strategies are among the approaches studied to improve stability; their value must be judged from the specific conditions and results reported, not assumed from the design label. Cai and Hu discuss nickel-based catalyst deactivation, and Torimoto and Sekine review recent alloying studies for steam and dry reforming: Cai and Hu and Torimoto and Sekine, 2022.

Account for feed impurities and process fit
The catalyst’s tested feed matters as much as its nominal formulation. For biogas-derived feeds, H2S is a cited impurity and sulfur resistance is a catalyst-design concern. A stability result from a feed without a documented impurity challenge cannot establish sulfur tolerance. Check whether the study identifies impurities, reports poison exposure, or documents feed cleanup; keep any conclusion within that evidence. Cai and Hu discuss this issue in their review: Advances in catalytic conversion of methane and carbon dioxide to highly valuable products.
Process fit also means accounting for the conditions that enable the result. A catalyst claim should be considered alongside its operating temperature and any energy or feed-cleanup requirements documented by the source. If those requirements are not described, the conversion figure cannot answer whether the catalyst is suitable for a particular process. Do not infer practical cost, energy efficiency, or commercial readiness from a laboratory conversion result alone.
A practical workflow for evaluating a claim
- Write down the route and target. Identify the reaction route and desired product before comparing catalysts. This determines which conversion, selectivity, yield, and product-ratio measurements matter.
- Extract the conditions as a single record. Capture feed composition and oxidant ratio, impurities, pressure, temperature, reactor configuration, flow or space velocity, and time on stream. Keep the units and definitions from the source.
- Copy the performance metrics with their bases. Record methane conversion, co-reactant conversion where relevant, product selectivity and yield, and H2/CO ratio for syngas. Preserve the authors’ stated method and denominator.
- Separate initial activity from durability. Find the time-dependent conversion and selectivity data, deactivation observations, and any regeneration protocol. If the claim gives only a single initial value, do not call that value evidence of long-term stability.
- Compare like with like first. Prioritize studies using the same route and similar feed, pressure, reactor configuration, flow basis, and duration. If these do not match, label the comparison indirect and do not declare a winner.
- State what the evidence supports. Tie each conclusion to the reported catalyst, route, conditions, and test period. Identify missing conditions as limits on interpretation rather than filling them with assumptions.
Common comparison errors to avoid
- Ranking unlike routes by conversion. Steam reforming, dry reforming, and OCM have different oxidants and product objectives; a percentage from one is not a head-to-head score against another.
- Treating temperature as a catalyst rating. Temperature is an operating condition and an energy consideration. It cannot be judged apart from the conversion, product distribution, and feed that accompany it.
- Equating conversion with desired-product output. Without selectivity and yield, a high conversion number may not tell you how much of the wanted product formed.
- Calling short-term activity durability. Stability needs a stated duration and performance trend under stated operating conditions.
- Assuming a catalyst label proves resistance. “Alloyed,” “promoted,” or “sulfur resistant” is not a substitute for the relevant test conditions and measured stability evidence.
- Inferring a universal winner from review examples. Review figures summarize particular studies; they do not become controlled comparisons simply because they appear in the same article.
There is no universal durability protocol or current commercial benchmark established across the methane-conversion routes covered here. A defensible evaluation therefore makes the comparison boundary explicit: same route and reasonably aligned conditions where possible, and a clearly labeled indirect comparison otherwise.
