The cheapest advertised GPU-hour is rarely the cheapest way to finish an AI workload. A useful comparison combines the GPU, host CPU and RAM, storage, utilization, startup delay, failed or preempted runs, and every gigabyte that leaves the provider. It also checks whether the required GPUs are actually available in your target zone and whether your account has enough quota.

Use the process below to compare the cost of a completed training job or inference request, not a headline rate. Normalize equivalent memory, interconnect, software image, region, and billing unit; test a representative workload; then reprice the result as catalogs, Spot rates, quotas, and network policies change.

Start with effective workload cost, not GPU-hour price

A provider’s GPU rate is only one input. For a training job, calculate:

For serving, the more useful measures are cost per successful inference request, cost per million tokens, or cost per minute of acceptable availability. A low hourly rate can lose its advantage if the instance spends several minutes starting, runs at low utilization, or has to restart after an interruption.

Include the host that carries the GPU

Some catalogs emphasize a GPU line item while charging the machine type, CPU, RAM, attached disks, and networking separately. Record the complete instance configuration. A GPU with enough memory but an undersized host can become CPU-, data-loader-, or network-bound, reducing productive GPU-hours.

Charge for time that produces no useful work

Count image pulls, environment setup, dataset staging, checkpoint uploads, shutdown delays, and time spent waiting for a scheduler. If an instance remains running while a notebook is idle or a service has no requests, that time still affects the bill. Lambda’s billing documentation explicitly warns that instances are billed while running, even when actively unused, so automatic shutdown and idle timers are part of the cost model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Account for retries and failed work

Record how many steps or requests are lost when a machine fails or is reclaimed. A preempted Spot job may need to reload a checkpoint and repeat work; a serving deployment may need extra replicas while a replacement starts. Add the expected repeat compute, storage operations, and any additional data transfer to the numerator.

Define the workload before requesting prices

Write a one-page workload specification. Without it, two apparently comparable quotes can describe entirely different capacity.

  • Model and software: model family and size, framework, CUDA or other accelerator runtime, container or image, and required libraries.
  • Execution mode: training, fine-tuning, batch inference, interactive inference, or continuous serving.
  • Precision and memory: FP32, FP16, BF16, INT8, or another format; peak model, activation, optimizer, and KV-cache memory.
  • Parallelism: number of GPUs, data or tensor parallelism, expected batch size, and whether the job needs a tightly coupled multi-GPU system.
  • Location: target country, region, and—when relevant—an exact zone. Include data-residency and latency requirements.
  • Runtime: expected productive hours, number of jobs per month, startup deadline, and maximum acceptable interruption or recovery time.
  • Data movement: bytes uploaded for source data and images, bytes downloaded for checkpoints and predictions, replication traffic, logs, and any traffic between regions or services.
  • Service objective: throughput, latency, uptime, queueing limit, and the maximum time allowed to recover from a failure.

Keep the byte counts separate for ingress, egress, and internal transfers. A data-heavy pipeline can be network-limited even when its GPU utilization looks high.

Normalize every quote to an equivalent SKU

Create an apples-to-apples table before comparing prices. “H100,” “B200,” or another model name does not by itself describe usable performance or capacity.

Dimension What to record Why it changes the decision
GPU model and memory Exact model, memory capacity, memory bandwidth, and GPU count A cheaper card may not fit the model, batch size, or KV cache, forcing a smaller batch or another machine.
Interconnect NVLink, NVSwitch, PCIe, or the provider’s documented equivalent Communication-heavy parallel jobs can slow dramatically when GPUs cannot exchange data at the required rate.
Host CPU and RAM CPU model or vCPU count, RAM, NUMA layout, and local cache Data loading, preprocessing, compilation, and serving can bottleneck an otherwise capable GPU.
Storage Local SSD, network volume, capacity, IOPS or throughput, snapshot and retention charges Checkpoint-heavy jobs may pay more for storage operations or wait on a slow volume.
Region and zone Exact location, cross-zone path, residency rules, and latency to users or data Availability and network pricing are location-specific; a regional label can hide zone-level scarcity.
Software image Driver, runtime, framework versions, container support, orchestration integration Porting or debugging time is a real operating cost, especially for multi-node jobs.
Billing unit Per GPU-hour, per instance-hour, per cluster GPU-hour, minute increments, and minimums A short job can cost very different amounts under hourly, per-minute, or cluster billing.
Capacity terms Quota, reservation process, maximum cluster size, startup time, and interruption policy A nominally cheap SKU is not useful if it cannot be obtained when the job must run.

Do not compare a single GPU with a multi-GPU node, or a card with insufficient memory against one that meets the workload’s memory and interconnect requirements. If a quote omits a value, mark it “not stated” and obtain clarification rather than filling the gap with an assumption.

Published price examples and billing details

The following figures are public examples from 2026. They are not equivalent configurations, and GPU-only or instance rates should not be treated as a complete job estimate.

Provider and item Published price or billing rule Qualification to carry into your model
Google Cloud NVIDIA T4 $0.35 per GPU-hour on demand Each attached GPU adds cost to the VM machine type. GPU devices are offered only in specific zones within some regions.
Google Cloud NVIDIA V100 $2.48 per GPU-hour on demand The rate is for the GPU line item; include the host machine, storage, and applicable networking.
Google Cloud Spot GPUs Typically 60%–91% discounts for most machine types and GPUs Spot prices can change as often as once every 30 days. Confirm interruption behavior, reclaim notices, and checkpoint requirements.
CoreWeave GB200 NVL72 (North America) $42.00 per hour North America table; verify the exact service, region, and whether the quoted unit covers the complete node.
CoreWeave HGX B200 (North America) $68.80 per hour North America table; separate Spot prices are listed where offered.
CoreWeave transfer policy Vendor states there are no ingress, egress, or transfer fees Treat this as a current vendor statement and verify the exact service, region, and exceptions in your agreement.
Lambda on-demand instances Billed hourly in one-minute increments Stopping promptly matters; an instance continues to accrue charges while it is running.
Lambda 1-Click Clusters Priced per GPU-hour Confirm how cluster setup, attached storage, and any non-GPU resources are charged.
Lambda filesystems and networking Filesystems have no minimum storage period; users are not charged for ingress or egress Storage duration and data movement can therefore be modeled separately from those fees, while capacity and throughput still need checking.

For scale, 100 GPU-hours at the published T4 rate would be $35 in GPU charges before the host, storage, and transfer. The same arithmetic at the V100 rate would be $248. Those totals are deliberately not a performance comparison: the cards have different memory, architecture, and likely throughput for your model.

Calculate transfer and egress exposure

Measure bytes, not just the number of files. Include initial datasets, model downloads, checkpoints, generated outputs, logs retained outside the provider, replication, and traffic to users or another region. If a job retries, count the bytes transferred again when the platform does not retain the needed data locally.

Then add the time constraint:

Transfer time = bytes moved ÷ achievable throughput

Do not substitute a port’s advertised link speed for achievable application throughput. Google’s networking documentation lists a 7 Gbps total egress limit for many machine series, with higher limits for specific newer families. Seven gigabits per second is approximately 0.875 gigabytes per second, or about 3,150 decimal GB per hour in a theoretical continuous transfer; protocol overhead, contention, storage speed, and service limits reduce real throughput. Confirm the limit for the exact machine family and project or instance.

Separate price from bandwidth

A provider can have a favorable per-GB policy but still make a pipeline slow if the instance or project cannot sustain the required rate. Conversely, a high-throughput path can be uneconomical when millions of output gigabytes leave the provider. Record both dollars per GB and the measured or documented bandwidth ceiling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test the location of every endpoint

Moving data between regions, zones, object stores, managed databases, and end users may use different network paths and price rules. Keep a path-by-path ledger: source, destination, direction, GB per run, runs per month, price rule, and maximum bandwidth. Do not assume that “free egress” for one service covers a different region or product.

Check capacity and geography before choosing a rate

Availability is a capacity question, not a marketing label. A provider may list a GPU in a region while having no allocatable units in the zone, no quota for your project, or no contiguous capacity for a multi-GPU node.

Verify these items for the exact SKU

  • Whether the GPU is offered in the required region and zone.
  • Whether your account has the required quota and whether approval is automatic or manual.
  • Whether a reservation is required, its lead time, term, cancellation rule, and minimum commitment.
  • The largest cluster size available and whether all nodes can be placed with the required interconnect.
  • Typical startup time, image-pull time, and time to attach storage and networking.
  • How the provider communicates interruption, how much warning it gives, and which resources are reclaimed.
  • Whether capacity is guaranteed, best effort, or subject to a queue.

Ask for a live capacity check or a small allocation in the intended zone. A screenshot of a catalog page is not proof that a quota request will be approved or that a 64-GPU job can start at your deadline.

Measure startup as part of availability

For batch work, record submission-to-first-useful-step time. For serving, record deployment-to-ready time and replacement time after a failure. A lower rate may be the wrong choice when startup delay violates a service-level objective or forces you to keep a warm standby running.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a purchasing model that matches utilization certainty

Model Best fit Main risk Controls
On-demand Uncertain workloads, experiments, launches, and jobs with strict start deadlines Highest unit cost and possible capacity shortage Maintain a tested fallback region or provider; automate shutdown and set budget alerts.
Commitment or reserved capacity Stable, high utilization with predictable GPU count and region Paying for unused capacity or being locked to an obsolete model or location Commit only after measured utilization; match the term and capacity to a realistic forecast and confirm exchange or cancellation rules.
Spot or other interruptible capacity Checkpointed training, elastic batch inference, and workloads that can wait or retry Reclamation, variable price, queueing, and repeated work Frequent durable checkpoints, resumable jobs, multiple zones, idempotent steps, and a tested on-demand fallback.

Google reports Spot discounts of 60%–91% for most machine types and GPUs, but a discount does not establish availability or a guaranteed runtime. Model the expected interruption rate and recovery time rather than multiplying the on-demand price by the advertised discount alone.

Run a representative benchmark

Price sheets cannot reveal utilization, startup delay, or application throughput. Run the same workload—or a scaled version that preserves its memory and communication pattern—on each candidate.

  1. Prepare identical inputs. Use the same model checkpoint, dataset shard, precision, batch size, container, and compiler settings. Record the software image digest and driver/runtime versions.
  2. Warm up and measure startup separately. Timestamp allocation, SSH or API readiness, storage attachment, image completion, first kernel, and first useful training step or successful request.
  3. Measure productive performance. For training, capture steps per second, tokens per second, and time to a fixed validation target. For serving, capture requests or tokens per second, latency percentiles, concurrency, and error rate.
  4. Capture utilization and bottlenecks. Log GPU utilization, memory use, host CPU, RAM, storage throughput, network throughput, and inter-GPU communication. Low GPU utilization should trigger a configuration investigation before a price comparison.
  5. Exercise failure recovery. Stop or reclaim a test worker when possible. Measure checkpoint interval, lost work, restart time, and whether the scheduler duplicates or drops tasks.
  6. Count all bytes. Record dataset downloads, checkpoint uploads, logs, responses, and cross-region traffic. Use the same retention policy for every candidate.
  7. Convert results to the decision metric. Divide total measured cost by completed steps, finished training run, successful request, or million tokens. Include idle, startup, retry, storage, and transfer charges.
  8. Repeat at target concurrency. A single-user result can hide queueing, bandwidth contention, or host limits that appear in production.

Build a comparison worksheet that stays auditable

Use one row per exact SKU and one column per assumption. At minimum, include:

  • Provider, service, region, zone, GPU model, memory, count, and interconnect.
  • Host CPU, RAM, local storage, network storage, and measured throughput.
  • Billing unit, minimum duration, on-demand price, Spot or reserved price, and price-change terms.
  • Quota status, reservation lead time, startup time, maximum cluster size, and interruption notice.
  • Expected productive hours, utilization, idle fraction, retry fraction, and checkpoint interval.
  • Ingress GB, egress GB, internal or cross-region GB, applicable rate, and bandwidth limit.
  • Monthly completed steps, requests, tokens, or jobs, with the resulting effective unit cost.

Keep the assumptions versioned. When a GPU catalog, Spot price, quota policy, or egress rule changes, rerun the arithmetic instead of editing the old result in place. The evaluation method should be repriced monthly and after any material workload or region change.

Common comparison mistakes and fixes

Comparing unlike memory and interconnect

Symptom: the lower-priced GPU needs a smaller batch, model sharding, or slower communication. Fix: compare usable memory and measured throughput at the same quality target, not model names alone.

Ignoring host and storage charges

Symptom: the GPU estimate looks attractive but the VM, volume, snapshots, or I/O dominate the invoice. Fix: quote the complete machine and apply the actual storage retention and throughput pattern.

Assuming catalog presence means capacity

Symptom: allocation fails for the required zone or cluster size. Fix: obtain quota approval and perform a live allocation test before committing a deadline-sensitive job.

Treating Spot savings as guaranteed

Symptom: a discounted run takes longer or costs more after repeated reclamation. Fix: checkpoint frequently, measure recovery, use multiple capacity pools, and include expected repeated work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Under-counting egress

Symptom: training is inexpensive but exporting checkpoints, predictions, or logs erases the savings. Fix: maintain a byte ledger by path and multiply it by the applicable rate and number of retries.

Leaving instances running

Symptom: billed hours exceed productive hours. Fix: add job-completion shutdown, idle detection, lease expiry, and alerts; verify that cleanup also releases storage and reserved resources.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Reject any SKU that fails the model’s memory, precision, interconnect, region, or latency requirements.
  2. Reject any option without a credible path to quota and capacity at the required start time.
  3. Benchmark the remaining SKUs using the same image, input, concurrency, and checkpoint policy.
  4. Calculate completed-workload cost with host, storage, startup, retries, and transfer included.
  5. Compare on-demand, committed or reserved, and Spot scenarios using the utilization certainty and interruption tolerance you actually have.
  6. Select a primary capacity pool and a tested fallback, then schedule monthly repricing and capacity checks.

Bottom line

Choose the GPU cloud that completes your workload at the lowest reliable cost, not the provider with the lowest isolated GPU-hour. Normalize the hardware and software, verify zone-level capacity and quota, measure startup and productive throughput, and charge every byte that leaves the platform. On-demand is the baseline for certainty, commitments make sense only with sustained utilization, and Spot is economical when checkpointing and recovery have been proven. Recalculate the decision whenever prices, availability, or your workload’s data movement changes.
