Do not place an F&O trade because a message says a stock will rise or fall. First verify who issued the recommendation, identify the exact futures or options contract, test the reasoning, define what would invalidate it, and calculate how much you could lose. A stock-direction opinion is not a complete derivatives trade plan.
What to check before acting on any F&O tip
Use this sequence every time:
- Verify the provider: record the exact legal name and check its current status in the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) records.
- Identify the contract: name the underlying stock, futures or options type, expiry, and—if it is an option—call or put and strike.
- Demand a usable plan: confirm the entry conditions, validity period, rationale, exit method, invalidation point, and risk limit.
- Read disclosures: look for stated risks, material interests, conflicts and service terms.
- Translate the idea into loss: understand leverage, margin, expiry effects, liquidity and the amount that can be lost before considering an order.
- Pause under pressure: unsolicited messages, guaranteed profits and unrealistic return claims are reasons to stop and verify independently.
If a recommendation fails any of these checks, do not treat a target price or confident language as a substitute for missing information.
How can I check whether an F&O stock-tip provider is genuine?
Record the provider’s real identity
Write down the person’s or firm’s exact legal name, not just a social-media handle, channel name or logo. Ask for the SEBI registration number and the service category under which the provider operates. A screenshot, certificate image or claim in an advertisement is not proof of current registration.

Use SEBI’s official records to confirm that the name and registration number match and that the status is current. Registration status and applicable categories can change, so perform this check close to the time you use the service. SEBI’s public caution says investors should deal with SEBI-registered investment advisers and research analysts and avoid tips from unregistered entities.

SEBI’s September 23, 2015 public caution states: “The general public is hereby cautioned to deal with only SEBI registered investment advisers and research analysts for availing investment advisory services/ research services.”
Distinguish research from personalised advice
A Research Analyst generally provides research and recommendations about securities. An Investment Adviser provides advice that is personalised to a client’s circumstances. The correct category depends on what the provider actually does, not on the marketing label. If a service asks about your finances, goals or risk tolerance and then gives individualised instructions, ask which regulated service it is providing and whether its registration covers that activity.
Do not outsource verification
Do not rely solely on a forwarded message, influencer endorsement, trading-group membership, a “verified” badge or a promise that a broker has approved the call. The provider’s identity and regulatory status must be independently confirmable before you pay or trade.

What details should a stock futures or options recommendation include?
Underlying stock
The call should name the listed stock and, where relevant, the exchange or market. “Buy this stock in F&O” is not specific enough because several contracts can refer to the same underlying.
Future or option
A future is a standardised exchange-traded contract to buy or sell the underlying at a predetermined price on a future date. An option gives its buyer a right, but not an obligation, under the contract’s terms. These structures have different payoff, margin, expiry and loss characteristics, so a bullish or bearish view alone cannot identify the trade.
Expiry and contract details
For a futures recommendation, require the contract expiry and the proposed entry context. For an option recommendation, require all of the following:
- call or put;
- strike price;
- expiry date;
- proposed entry price or acceptable price range;
- quantity or lot size used for the calculation.
The recommendation should also state whether it concerns buying or selling the option. Buying a call and selling a call are not interchangeable strategies; neither are buying and selling a put.

Time validity
Ask when the call expires as a recommendation. A signal that was valid at the opening bell may be stale later in the session. “Enter now” without a time window leaves you unable to tell whether a delayed fill still follows the original thesis.
How do I test the reasoning behind the recommendation?
Ask for a falsifiable thesis
A credible call explains why the expected move might occur and what observation would prove the idea wrong. The explanation may refer to company information, a defined technical condition, an event or another observable factor, but it should be understandable enough for you to challenge.
Ask these questions:
- What is the expected catalyst or market condition?
- What price action, news or time limit invalidates the thesis?
- Why does this particular contract express the view better than another expiry or strike?
- What assumptions must remain true until the exit?
A target price is an outcome estimate, not an explanation of probability or risk. A confident tone, previous winning screenshots or a high target does not establish that the present trade is sound.
Check the information yourself
Compare the stated rationale with information available from company filings, exchange notices and other reliable sources. Look for omitted facts that could materially alter the view, such as an approaching result, corporate action, trading halt or unusually wide spread. You are checking whether the reasoning is coherent, not trying to prove that the provider must be right.

Being right that a stock will rise can still produce a loss on an option if the move is too small, too late or overwhelmed by time decay and implied-volatility changes. A futures position can lose money if the move goes the other way or if adverse price movement forces an exit before the thesis plays out. The directional view and the contract selection must be evaluated separately.
How do I know the risk in an F&O recommendation?
Start with the position, not the headline return
Write down the proposed quantity, entry price, stop or other exit rule, expiry and all transaction costs. Then calculate the rupee loss under the stated exit and under adverse scenarios. If the provider does not supply enough information to do this, the recommendation is incomplete.
Understand leverage
Derivatives can require less capital than purchasing the underlying stock, but that lower initial outlay can magnify both gains and losses. Margin is not a cap on loss. A relatively small adverse move in the underlying can consume the posted margin or require additional funds.

Futures risk
A futures position has an obligation under the contract. Losses can continue as the underlying moves against you, and the position may be marked to market. Confirm the contract multiplier or lot size, the margin requirement, the broker’s liquidation rules and the exit price you are realistically able to obtain.

An option buyer pays a premium for a right that expires on a specified date. The premium can be lost if the option expires without sufficient value, even when the underlying moves in the anticipated direction but not far or fast enough. The buyer’s maximum loss is generally the premium paid plus applicable costs, but use the exact contract terms and quantity to calculate it.
Option seller risk
Option selling creates obligations and can expose the seller to losses far larger than the premium received, depending on the strategy and whether the position is hedged. Require a clear description of the hedge, margin, adjustment rules and maximum or stress-case loss before considering such a trade.
Expiry and settlement
Find out whether the contract is cash-settled or physically settled and what happens if you hold it into expiry. An option’s value can change sharply near expiry, and an apparently small position can create a delivery or settlement obligation. Follow the current exchange and broker specifications rather than relying on an old message.
Liquidity and execution
Check traded volume, open interest, bid-ask spread and the likely size of your order. A theoretical stop may not be fillable at that price in a fast or illiquid market. Include slippage in your loss estimate and decide in advance what you will do if the spread widens or the order cannot be filled.
What should the actual trade plan contain?
Entry conditions
Specify the price, trigger or market condition that permits entry, along with the maximum acceptable slippage. “Buy on dips” or “enter around current levels” is not a reproducible condition.
Exit and invalidation
Require both a profit-taking method and a loss-control rule. The invalidation point is the condition that says the thesis is no longer valid; it is not necessarily the same as a broker’s automatic stop order. Ask whether the exit is based on price, time, news or a combination.

Recommendation expiry
State the date and time after which the call should be ignored if the entry has not occurred. This prevents an old signal from being treated as permanently active.
Position size
Position size should follow the loss you can afford, not the available margin or the provider’s suggested number of lots. If the recommendation gives no quantity, use your own risk limit and do not infer a suitable size from someone else’s account.
Contingency actions
The plan should address a gap opening, trading halt, rejected order, sudden volatility, inability to monitor the position and an approach to expiry. If no contingency is stated, ask for one before placing an order.
Which disclosures and conflicts should I read?
Read the report, service agreement and risk disclosure in full. Look for:
- the provider’s registration and service category;
- material interests in the security or derivative;
- relationships, compensation or other conflicts that could influence the recommendation;
- assumptions, methodology and limitations of the analysis;
- fees, renewal terms, cancellation rules and complaint channels;
- clear warnings that derivatives are high-risk and that losses are possible.
Ask for clarification when a disclosure is missing, vague or inconsistent with the sales pitch. A disclaimer does not repair an undefined contract or a plan that cannot be risk-calculated.
SEBI’s April 2025 Investor Charter source is identified as a draft circular for public comments. It is useful as an investor-facing checklist about registration checks, disclosures, questions and clarification for complex, high-risk products, but it should not be described as a final circular or current legal rule.
What warning signs mean I should stop?
- Unsolicited contact: an unexpected message urges you to trade immediately.
- Guaranteed profits: language says the trade cannot lose or promises a fixed return.
- Unrealistic returns: extraordinary gains are presented as routine or risk-free.
- Artificial urgency: you are told there is no time to verify the provider or contract.
- Vague instructions: the message omits expiry, strike, option type, quantity or entry conditions.
- Refusal to explain losses: the provider discusses targets but not invalidation, margin or worst-case outcomes.
- Pressure to transfer funds: payment or account access is demanded before documentation is supplied.
- Cherry-picked records: only winning calls are shown, with no independently verifiable history or treatment of losses.
SEBI specifically cautions investors about unsolicited tips and claims of unrealistic returns. Any one of these signs justifies pausing; several together are a reason not to proceed.

How should I compare two F&O recommendations?
Put both calls into the same comparison sheet. If a field is absent, write “not stated” rather than filling it with an assumption.

The more attractive call is not automatically the one with the higher target. Prefer the one you can independently identify, test and risk-manage. If one provider supplies a detailed plan and the other supplies only a direction and target, they are not equivalent recommendations.
A practical pause-and-check workflow
- Save the original message. Keep the timestamp, sender identity, stated price, expiry and any edits so you can distinguish the original call from later revisions.
- Verify the provider. Match the legal name and registration number against current SEBI records. Stop if the identity cannot be confirmed.
- Rewrite the call as a contract. Record the underlying, future or option, buy or sell, expiry, strike, option type, quantity and entry range.
- Mark the validity window. Note the time after which the recommendation is no longer active.
- Write the thesis and invalidation. State why the trade might work and the observable condition that cancels it.
- Calculate loss scenarios. Include the stated stop, a gap or slippage scenario, expiry, fees and the possibility of losing the premium or additional margin.
- Review liquidity and execution. Check spread, volume and whether your intended size can be exited.
- Read disclosures and terms. Identify interests, conflicts, risks, fees and complaint procedures.
- Remove pressure from the decision. Ignore countdowns and guaranteed-return claims; take time to verify independently.
- Decide whether to pass. If any material fact remains unknown, not trading is a valid outcome.
What the SEBI loss statistic does—and does not—tell you
SEBI’s investor education material reports that 9 out of 10 individual equity F&O traders incurred net losses in each of FY 2018–19 and FY 2021–22. This is a historical aggregate finding for those financial years. It is not a forecast of your result, a pass-or-fail test of a particular recommendation, or evidence that every trade will lose.
The statistic does explain why a recommendation should be treated as a high-risk decision requiring a contract-level plan rather than as a simple stock tip.
Scope and changing details
This checklist helps you verify identity, contract terms, reasoning and risk; it cannot guarantee that a trade will be profitable or suitable for your circumstances. Registration status, exchange contract specifications, margin rules, settlement procedures and grievance channels can change. Confirm current details through official SEBI, exchange and broker sources before acting.
Do not provide money or account access merely because a provider passes a registration check. Regulation addresses the provider’s status; it does not make a particular forecast correct or remove market risk.
Final decision rule
Place an F&O trade only when you can answer, in writing: who issued it, which exact contract is involved, why the thesis could work, what invalidates it, when the call expires, how you will exit, and how much you can lose in realistic adverse conditions. If any answer is missing—or if urgency, guarantees or unverifiable claims replace evidence—walk away.
