Digital marketing can help a business attract demand, convert prospects into customers, build brand awareness, and improve decisions about where to spend. It does not guarantee more sales or profit. To know whether it is helping, define a business outcome first—such as profitable revenue, qualified leads, or customer retention—and measure results against that goal. Clicks, views, and reach show campaign activity; they do not, on their own, prove business value.
What business success can digital marketing support?
The right definition depends on the company’s goal. A retailer may focus on profitable sales; a business selling to other companies may prioritize qualified leads; a subscription service may care about retention or customer value. Marketing contributes when it helps improve an outcome the business actually needs.
That contribution can take several forms:
- Capturing demand: Reaching people already looking for a product or service and helping them complete a purchase or inquiry.
- Creating awareness and consideration: Introducing a brand to potential customers so it is more likely to be considered later. These effects may take longer to appear than a direct response.
- Learning about customers: Using appropriately collected data to understand which audiences and messages are associated with useful outcomes, then refining campaigns and spending.
Marketing metrics should connect to the goal. Reach and views describe exposure; clicks describe responses to campaign material. Sales, qualified leads, customer retention, and incremental lift are closer to business outcomes. The distinction matters: a campaign can generate activity without producing meaningful value.
Why effects can appear on different timelines
Performance campaigns often aim for an immediate action, such as a purchase or lead. Brand-building activity aims to influence awareness and future choice, so its value may emerge over a longer period. Measuring only the last interaction before a conversion can therefore miss some longer-term effects.

A Google article from January 2025 summarized Google/WARC analysis of brands in Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Sweden, and the UK. In that analysis, returns during the first four months equaled returns across the subsequent 20 months. This is evidence of a reported long tail in that analysis, not a forecast for every business or market. Read Google’s summary of the Google/WARC findings.
The same article reported that a Nielsen study for Google associated a 1% increase in brand awareness with 0.4% higher short-term sales and 0.6% higher long-term sales. These are study-specific associations, not guaranteed sales gains for an individual campaign.

Which measurement method answers which question?
No single measurement approach answers every question. Attribution, incrementality experiments, and marketing mix modeling (MMM) serve different purposes and are most useful when treated as complementary.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Method | Best suited to | What it tells you | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Attribution | Assigning credit among interactions in observed or modeled customer journeys | Which interactions receive credit under the selected model | Credit assignment alone does not establish causal lift and may undercount longer-term brand effects. |
| Incrementality experiment | Testing whether a specific activity caused additional outcomes | The lift attributable to the tested activity under the experiment’s design | It answers a bounded question; it does not measure every channel or all long-run effects. |
| Marketing mix modeling (MMM) | Assessing aggregate cross-channel contribution over time | Statistical relationships between marketing and sales or other business KPIs, accounting for channels and non-marketing factors | It requires suitable historical data and modeling; aggregate results do not describe every customer journey. |
Google’s March 2024 measurement playbook says incrementality testing complements attribution and MMM rather than replacing them, and that no single measurement solution fits every scenario. See Google’s modern measurement playbook. Google’s Meridian guide notes that MMM can account for factors such as economic shifts, competitors, seasonality, weather, and news events. What published results can—and cannot—tell you
Published figures can illustrate possible outcomes, but their meaning depends on who produced them, the market and period covered, and whether the evidence is an association, a case study, or a causal experiment. Several examples illustrate why those qualifications matter:
- Budget allocation: Google’s January 2025 article reports a Google/WARC recommendation of 50–60% for brand building and 40–50% for performance tactics, based on Ipsos MMA’s analysis of e-commerce ROI from European brands. Treat this as a study recommendation, not a universal budget rule.
- Domino’s: The same Google article reports a 45% increase in overall ROI from Domino’s YouTube platform after the company ran brand-awareness campaigns alongside performance campaigns. It is a company-specific example, not a guaranteed result for other advertisers.
- Google internal data: Google reported that businesses linking Google Ads or Google Marketing Platform accounts to a Google Analytics property saw a 23% increase in conversions and a 10% reduction in cost per conversion in global data from October 2023 through December 2024. Google describes these as correlated results; they do not establish that linking accounts caused the changes. See Google’s article and its description of the data.
- Palmonas: Google’s case study reports a sevenfold year-on-year increase in online sales revenue in Q4 2024 and a 76% increase in return on ad spend for the India-based direct-to-consumer jewelry brand, which adopted GA4 data-driven attribution and adjusted campaigns. This vendor-published case study is not a controlled, universal estimate. Read the Google case study source.
- Use of MMM in the UK: A Boston Consulting Group UK Measurement Landscape Survey, fielded January 27–February 15, 2025, with 452 respondents, found that 76% of surveyed companies relied on MMM for cross-channel budget allocation. It describes those UK respondents, not all companies worldwide. See the Meridian guide citing the survey.
These examples come from sources published by Google, an advertising and analytics vendor. They can provide context, but a vendor’s reported data or advertiser case study should not be treated as independent proof that the same approach will work for another business.

How to evaluate digital marketing for your business
- Choose a business outcome. Specify what success means—such as profitable sales, qualified leads, retention, or another company-specific goal. Avoid substituting an easy-to-count activity metric for the outcome.
- Connect campaigns to the outcome. Define the audience, channel, activity, and KPI for each effort. Set the measurement approach before launch so the results can answer the question you care about.
- Use data responsibly. Collect appropriate, consented first-party data to inform measurement and decisions. Google’s January 2025 article on marketing effectiveness emphasizes consented first-party data in this context. Read Google’s article on connecting marketing effectiveness to business value.
- Match the method to the question. Use attribution to assign credit across journeys, an incrementality test to investigate whether a specific activity caused additional outcomes, and MMM to assess aggregate channel relationships over time.
- Review both near-term and longer-term evidence. Immediate conversions may be relevant, but they do not capture every possible brand effect. Interpret results within the measurement window and method used.
- Adjust based on evidence. Compare outcomes with the business goal, account for the limits of the measurement, and reallocate or refine campaigns accordingly. Treat a suggested channel split as a starting point for analysis, not a fixed prescription.
