Evaluate a diamond-enhanced cold plate as a complete thermal-and-hydraulic subsystem, not by its material label or a single temperature claim. First identify the construction, then compare hotspot temperature or chip-to-coolant resistance at the same heat load, coolant, inlet temperature, flow and pressure drop. Finally verify package fit, mounting, coolant compatibility, reliability and rack-level pump energy. The strongest independent result currently available is a 2026 study of diamond-shaped pin fins—not a universal score for every commercial diamond cold plate.
What “diamond-enhanced” means
“Diamond-enhanced” is an umbrella term. It can describe the shape of a fluid-side feature, a diamond heat spreader joined to a metal plate, diamond embedded in a ceramic matrix, or a bulk copper-diamond composite. Those constructions have different heat paths, joining methods, hydraulic behavior and failure modes. Treating them as one product class hides the engineering trade-offs.
| Architecture | What is changed | Example evidence | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diamond-shaped pin fins | The liquid-side fin geometry is diamond-shaped, made in copper or copper-tungsten. | Pinkus and co-authors’ 2026 peer-reviewed study, recorded by Oak Ridge National Laboratory: study record. | Its measured values apply to that test geometry and conditions, not to every commercial plate. |
| Copper plate with an integrated diamond spreader | A diamond layer or spreader is integrated into a copper direct-to-chip plate. | Frore describes a copper-and-diamond, multi-stage LiquidJet DIAMOND configuration: product page. | Vendor product claims are not independent head-to-head benchmarks. |
| Diamond in a silicon-carbide matrix | Diamond is integrated into SiC to form a high-conductivity cold-plate material. | Coherent announced Thermadite 800 for high-power compute: announcement. | The cited announcement does not provide independent replication, price or complete platform qualification. |
| Copper-diamond composite | Diamond particles or structures are combined with copper as a thermal-management material. | Element Six presents CU-DIAMOND materials: materials page. | The cited page does not confirm a complete, server-qualified cold plate. |
Ask the supplier to state the architecture in drawings and material specifications. “Diamond” alone is not a sufficient bill-of-materials description.

Define the acceptance metric before looking at a plate. A mean case temperature can look good while a local accelerator hotspot remains above its limit. Request junction or hotspot temperatures, the sensor locations, heat load, coolant inlet temperature, flow rate and measurement uncertainty.
#1 Best Overall
- Made of 6061 aluminum offering good-grade contact surface
- 6x7 Inch - The size of the plate well suited to collect the products.
- FABRIC BAG COVERED - The chilling pad includes a fabric bag for conveniently placing in Freezer or Refrigerator
- INSULATING WOODEN FEETS - The plate includes 4 wooden legs for keeping cool
- COLLECTION TOOL - It works well when collecting drips directly
Use a defined thermal-resistance boundary
Thermal resistance is meaningful only when its boundaries are named. For a chip-to-coolant value, establish whether the temperature is a junction estimate, an on-package sensor, or a plate measurement, and whether the coolant temperature is at the inlet, outlet or a measured local point. State whether the thermal interface material (TIM), package lid, spreader and plate are included. A useful form is the temperature difference across the stated boundary divided by the applied heat load; report the result in K/kW together with those boundary definitions.
Independent reference result
The strongest independent quantitative evidence identified is Pinkus and co-authors’ 2026 International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer study. Diamond-shaped pin fins produced roughly 15% lower thermal resistance than a conventional straight-fin microchannel in the tested design. At a 1 kW heat load, water coolant and 9.0 kPa inlet-to-outlet pressure drop, the best reported chip-to-coolant results—including the TIM—were 6.9 K/kW for copper and 9.0 K/kW for copper-tungsten. These numbers belong to that geometry, material choice and test protocol; they are not a universal specification for a “diamond cold plate.”
Compare thermal benefit with hydraulic cost
A plate that lowers thermal resistance by demanding substantially more flow can increase pump energy or exceed the rack loop’s pressure budget. Always place temperature or resistance beside pressure drop, flow and coolant properties.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Item to record | Required detail | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Heat load | Steady or transient load in watts; duration and duty cycle | A result at 1 kW cannot be extrapolated to a different accelerator load without a thermal model. |
| Coolant | Fluid type, concentration, viscosity and specific heat at test temperature | Fluid properties alter heat transfer and pressure drop. |
| Inlet condition | Coolant inlet temperature and stability | The same plate can produce a different junction temperature with a different inlet temperature. |
| Flow and pressure | Flow rate, plate pressure drop and where pressure is measured | Pressure drop determines manifold and pump requirements; include fittings if they are in the measurement. |
| Pump power | Electrical or hydraulic power needed to sustain the operating point | Cooling efficiency must be judged against total system energy, not temperature alone. |
| Temperature metric | Hotspot or junction value, sensor position and uncertainty | Average temperature can conceal a damaging local maximum. |
The ORNL study’s combination of 1 kW, water, 9.0 kPa and TIM-inclusive chip-to-coolant resistance illustrates the minimum context needed to interpret a number. If a supplier omits one of those fields, request it before making a comparison.

Separate vendor claims from demonstrated performance
Frore LiquidJet DIAMOND
Frore’s product page claims a 16–22 °C cooler GPU and 30–35% more AI tokens per watt than its stated multi-inlet skived comparison. The page describes a copper-and-diamond, multi-stage direct-to-chip design. Those are Frore’s claims; ask for the baseline plate, workload, accelerator, coolant, flow, inlet temperature, pressure drop and uncertainty before using them in a model. Frore product page
Frore’s October 7, 2026 announcement claims 35% higher AI tokens per watt and revenue versus traditional skived cold plates. “Revenue” is a system or business outcome, not a plate-only thermal measurement, so require the workload and financial assumptions behind it. October 7, 2026 announcement
Coherent Thermadite 800
Coherent’s March 5, 2026 announcement claims Thermadite 800 conductivity of 800 W/(m·K), approximately twice copper, and a temperature reduction of more than 15 °C versus conventional copper cold plates in high-heat-flux AI accelerator environments. These are announcement claims about a material and application; they do not by themselves establish a complete plate’s junction temperature, pressure drop, pump power or long-term reliability. Check the full thermal stack
The die-to-coolant path can include the die attach, package substrate, lid, TIM, spreader, bond layers and the cold plate itself. A plate improvement may be masked by package or TIM resistance. Conversely, omitting the TIM can make a plate appear better than it will perform in the server.
- Obtain the TIM part number, thickness range, application method and compression target.
- Confirm whether the reported resistance includes the TIM and package interface.
- Request flatness, surface-finish and allowable mounting-pressure specifications.
- Map sensor locations to the accelerator’s actual hotspots rather than relying on a single plate thermocouple.
- Repeat measurements after thermal cycling to detect interface pump-out or settling.
Verify accelerator and server compatibility
Cold plates are platform-specific mechanical parts. Frore lists a 104.6 × 62 × 20.4 mm LiquidJet DIAMOND configuration for NVIDIA GB300 and says dimensions are customized to the target GPU. That example does not prove fit for another GPU, board, carrier or server tray. Frore product page
Mechanical checklist
- Exact accelerator, board revision, package and server SKU.
- Cold-plate length, width, height, port positions and manifold orientation.
- Keep-out zones for memory, inductors, connectors, latches and adjacent plates.
- Mounting-hole pattern, screw length, torque sequence and allowable package load.
- TIM thickness tolerance and compression stop design.
- Clearance inside the tray, sled and rack service envelope.
Fluid and service checklist
- Coolant chemistry, concentration, filtration and approved operating-temperature range.
- Material compatibility among diamond, copper, copper-tungsten, SiC, seals, fittings and the rack loop.
- Connector and hose standard, dripless coupling requirements and bend radius.
- Flow-balancing method when several accelerators share a manifold.
- Factory leak test, field pressure test, acceptance criteria and retest interval.
- Drain, replacement and contamination-control procedure.
Have the server OEM and cold-plate supplier sign off the interface control drawing. A dimension listed on a product page is not a drop-in guarantee.
Evaluate reliability before deployment
Thermal performance data does not establish service life. Request evidence for pressure testing, leak detection, thermal cycling, vibration, corrosion and particulate tolerance. Ask how joints between dissimilar materials are made and inspected, because a copper, diamond, CuW or SiC assembly can have different coefficients of thermal expansion and different joining risks.

Specify acceptance limits for leak rate, pressure decay, flow restriction and hotspot temperature after cycling. Require a warranty and a field-replacement process that covers the cold plate, seals and TIM. The available product pages and announcement do not settle these vendor-specific reliability questions, so treat missing documentation as an open qualification item rather than an implied pass.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a system-level boundary, not just a plate test
The Open Compute Project’s cold-plate work spans the technology cooling system from the cold plate through the coolant distribution unit (CDU) and seeks a vendor-neutral baseline for single-phase direct-to-chip cold plates. Use that boundary when translating a plate result into rack economics. OCP Cold Plate project
At rack scale, measure CDU approach temperature, manifold pressure, pump energy, branch-flow balance and accelerator throttling. A plate-level gain is valuable only if the loop can deliver the required flow without forcing a larger pump, higher CDU parasitics or an operating point outside the server’s limits.

- Identify the construction. Record whether the candidate uses diamond-shaped fins, an integrated spreader, a diamond-SiC matrix or a copper-diamond composite. Obtain a cross-section, material stack and joining description.
- Define the target package. Freeze the accelerator and server SKU, package drawing, mounting pattern, TIM and keep-out envelope. Do not evaluate a generic plate against a specific server until the interfaces are controlled.
- Set a matched baseline. Use the same heat load, coolant, inlet temperature, flow, sensor positions, TIM boundary and steady-state or transient protocol for the reference and candidate plates.
- Measure thermal and hydraulic data together. Capture hotspot or junction temperature, chip-to-coolant resistance, flow rate, pressure drop and uncertainty at each operating point. Include the plate, fittings and manifold sections that will exist in the server.
- Calculate pump and system energy. Record the pump electrical power required at the accepted flow. Compare performance per watt at the workload, not only temperature at an isolated test condition.
- Validate mechanical and fluid fit. Inspect the assembled board, torque the mount to specification, verify port access and run coolant-compatibility, leak and pressure tests.
- Run reliability conditioning. Use the supplier’s thermal-cycle, pressure and vibration plan, then repeat the thermal-hydraulic measurements to identify drift.
- Pilot one instrumented server or tray. Log accelerator sensors, inlet and outlet temperatures, branch flows, pressures, pump power and workload throughput under representative AI duty cycles.
- Extrapolate cautiously. Scale to a rack only after branch balance, CDU capacity, service access and throttling behavior are demonstrated at the pilot operating point.

Common evaluation mistakes
- Comparing unlike architectures: a diamond fin geometry, diamond spreader and diamond-SiC material are not interchangeable test categories.
- Quoting temperature without conditions: omit load, coolant, inlet temperature, flow or sensor location and the number loses engineering meaning.
- Ignoring pressure drop: a lower resistance that requires disproportionate pump work may worsen total energy efficiency.
- Mixing boundaries: a TIM-inclusive chip-to-coolant value cannot be compared directly with a bare-plate resistance.
- Treating marketing as independent evidence: vendor claims require baseline definitions, raw data and replication.
- Assuming dimensions equal compatibility: package height, mounting force, ports and neighboring components can still prevent installation.
- Extrapolating from one accelerator: a GB300 configuration or a 1 kW laboratory result does not define another board or workload.
- Skipping post-cycle testing: initial thermal numbers do not reveal interface drift, corrosion or leakage.
What a defensible decision looks like
Choose a diamond-enhanced plate when its measured hotspot or chip-to-coolant improvement at your required heat load survives a matched hydraulic comparison, fits the exact platform and remains stable after qualification. Reject a proposal that supplies only a conductivity value, an unqualified temperature delta or a tokens-per-watt percentage without test boundaries. The decision should be based on instrumented plate and rack data, documented interfaces and lifecycle evidence—not on the word “diamond.”
