Neither Microsoft Defender for Endpoint nor CrowdStrike can be called the universal winner for detecting lateral movement from the available evidence. Microsoft documents behavior-based blocking and endpoint investigation features; CrowdStrike documents cross-host investigation workflows, while separate identity-detection and managed-hunting offerings add capabilities that should not be treated as built-in endpoint-agent features. The right comparison depends on which signals you deploy and how well each product handles the same authorized scenarios in your environment.
What lateral movement means for detection
MITRE ATT&CK defines lateral movement as techniques adversaries use to enter and control remote systems on a network. In practice, an intruder may pivot from one host to another using credentials, remote execution, or legitimate administrative tools. That can leave evidence across endpoints and identity systems rather than in one alert or on one device.
This distinction matters when comparing tools: a product may block a suspicious behavior, raise an alert, provide context for an analyst, or combine those functions. Those are related but different outcomes.

| Capability | Microsoft Defender for Endpoint | CrowdStrike |
|---|---|---|
| Behavior-based prevention and detection | Microsoft documents monitoring suspicious behaviors and process trees, sending them to cloud protection for classification, and blocking artifacts on the device when they are found malicious. Its documented behavior-based detection names include Behavior:Win32/LateralMovement.*!ml. |
The cited CrowdStrike lateral-movement article describes investigation and correlation workflow; it does not quantify detection performance or establish an equivalent blocking behavior for this comparison. |
| Investigation context | Microsoft documents device timeline events, alert categories, ATT&CK technique context, event details, related entities when available, and hunting for related events. | CrowdStrike describes correlating activity across impacted hosts, showing source and target host context and remote-execution details, and searching lateral-movement events. |
| Identity signals | The cited Microsoft endpoint investigation and behavioral-blocking documentation does not establish an identity-product comparison. | Separate Falcon Identity Threat Detection materials describe identity-centered detections and identity-store visibility. Confirm licensing and coverage rather than assuming these are included in an endpoint-only deployment. |
| Managed hunting | The cited Microsoft sources do not establish a directly comparable managed-hunting service. | Falcon Adversary OverWatch is described as a managed hunting service that tracks lateral movement across endpoints and other domains. Compare it as an operating-service choice, not an endpoint-agent feature. |
How Microsoft Defender for Endpoint approaches it
Behavioral blocking
Microsoft’s Client behavioral blocking documentation describes suspicious behaviors and process trees being monitored and sent to cloud protection, where machine learning classifies artifacts. If an artifact is classified as malicious, Microsoft says it is blocked on the device. The documented behavior-based detection names align with MITRE ATT&CK tactics and include the lateral-movement family Behavior:Win32/LateralMovement.*!ml.

Microsoft says client behavioral blocking is enabled by default for organizations using Defender for Endpoint. It also identifies configuration areas such as security baselines, onboarded devices, EDR in block mode, attack surface reduction, and next-generation protection as relevant to enabling the full set of capabilities. This describes Microsoft’s product behavior; it is not a guarantee that every lateral-movement technique or sequence will produce a detection or block.
Endpoint investigation
Microsoft’s device investigation workflow can put events on a device timeline, show applicable alert categories such as Lateral Movement, provide event details and ATT&CK technique context, and surface related entities when data is available. An analyst can also hunt for events related to a selected event. Timeline retention depends on the organization’s data-retention policy and underlying workspace settings.
These features help an analyst understand available endpoint evidence. They should not be read as proof that every event in an attack chain was detected, or as a measure of prevention effectiveness.

How CrowdStrike approaches lateral-movement investigation
Cross-host context
CrowdStrike’s lateral-movement investigation article describes correlating activity across impacted hosts and presenting lateral movement in temporal relation to other process activity. The described workflow includes source and target host context, related host details, remote-execution command context, and an event search for examining broader activity.
This is evidence about an investigation workflow, not an independently measured detection rate or a head-to-head result against Defender for Endpoint. The cited article is vendor-authored and older, so it should not be used to infer current packaging or licensing.
Identity detection is a separate layer
CrowdStrike’s Falcon Identity Threat Detection materials describe identity-focused patterns including RDP, pass-the-hash, Mimikatz, unusual endpoint usage, and unusual service logins. Product-sheet materials describe visibility into identity-store protocols including NTLM, Kerberos, SMB, and LDAP/S, alongside behavioral profiling and risk context.

That identity layer can be relevant when movement uses credentials or authentication paths that endpoint telemetry alone may not explain. It is an adjacent product capability: verify the specific components, protocol coverage, and licensing in the deployment being evaluated rather than assuming an endpoint-only configuration includes it.

CrowdStrike describes Falcon Adversary OverWatch as managed threat hunting, including tracking lateral movement across endpoints and other domains and detecting misuse of remote-access tools. This changes who performs some of the hunting work; it is not a like-for-like comparison with an endpoint agent feature. Compare service scope and analyst coverage separately from product detection behavior.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which is better at detecting lateral movement?
The available product documentation does not establish that either platform is universally better at lateral-movement detection. The sources describe different evidence: Microsoft documents behavioral blocking and endpoint investigation functions; CrowdStrike documents cross-host investigation, with separate identity detection and managed-hunting offerings. None of those descriptions is an apples-to-apples effectiveness result for the same attack scenarios, configurations, and telemetry.

MITRE ATT&CK defines the tactic and provides evaluation context, but an evaluation result applies to its specific round, technique scope, and scenarios. Microsoft’s blog account of an earlier MITRE Engenuity evaluation is Microsoft’s description of its own tested attack story; it should not be generalized into a comparative lateral-movement score.
How to compare them in your environment
Use a small set of authorized, repeatable scenarios and compare what each deployment actually produces. Keep endpoints, identity feeds, policies, software versions, and test conditions as consistent as possible.
- Set the scope. Record which endpoints and operating systems are onboarded, which identity sources are connected, and which product components and licenses are active.
- Choose representative scenarios. Include remote-service use, suspicious remote execution, credential misuse, and movement from one host to a second host. Run only controlled tests you are authorized to perform.
- Record the outcome by stage. For each scenario, note whether the platform blocked activity, generated a detection or alert, or supplied investigation evidence without preventing the action. Do not treat one outcome as a substitute for another.
- Assess the evidence. Check whether analysts can identify the source and target hosts, relevant process or command context, event sequence, account or authentication context, and related events. Mark information as unavailable when the deployed telemetry does not provide it.
- Measure operational effort. Record prerequisites, tuning required, alert or incident grouping, and analyst time to understand and validate the activity. If managed hunting is in scope, evaluate the service separately from endpoint-agent behavior.
- Repeat under matched conditions. Keep policies and test conditions aligned, document configuration differences, and repeat scenarios when results vary. A result is meaningful only for the conditions recorded.
Before procurement or a retest, confirm current licensing, packaging, and configuration requirements with each vendor: these details can change. The comparison should reflect the capabilities actually enabled in the proposed deployment, not a broader product family or a separately licensed service.
