Evaluate a co-packaged optics (CPO) switch against the AI fabric you will actually deploy, not against a headline efficiency percentage. Start with scale-up and scale-out topology, cluster size, port rates, reach and traffic. Then normalize switching capacity, usable bandwidth, whole-system power, cooling, link and hardware reliability, interoperability, service procedures and supply status. Require measurements made with the same throughput, fiber reach, environmental conditions and reliability definitions for every option.
CPO puts optical engines on or next to the switch ASIC package, shortening the high-speed electrical path before fiber leaves the switch. That can reduce electrical loss and power, but the size of any benefit depends on the baseline pluggable design, lane rate, reach, cooling boundary and utilization. The following framework turns those variables into procurement evidence.
Understand what CPO changes in the switch
In a conventional switch, high-speed electrical traces run from the switch ASIC across a board to pluggable optical modules at the front panel. A CPO design places optical engines on or close to the ASIC package, so the electrical path is shorter and the connection to the network becomes optical earlier. NVIDIA describes this architecture as reducing electrical loss compared with a board-and-pluggable path; that is a vendor comparison, not an independently normalized result. See NVIDIA’s technical explanation of CPO for AI factories.
The location of the optics affects more than watts. It changes how you route fibers, replace failed components, monitor temperature, diagnose a lane and service a switch. Optics close to the ASIC can improve the signal budget while making access and replacement less like swapping a front-panel transceiver. A sound evaluation therefore treats the switch, optical engines, lasers, fiber plant, cooling and service contract as one system.

Define the AI fabric before comparing models
A switch with impressive aggregate bandwidth can still be the wrong choice if its port count, lane rate or reach does not fit the accelerator population. Document the intended fabric first.
Map scale-up and scale-out roles
- Scale-up: connections inside a rack or pod where accelerators exchange gradients, parameters or collective-operation traffic with low hop counts.
- Scale-out: links between racks, rows or halls, where longer fiber runs, additional tiers and larger failure domains matter.
- Hybrid fabrics: many AI installations use CPO for one tier and conventional optical or copper links elsewhere. State exactly which tier the candidate switch must serve.
Record the number of accelerators and NICs per rack, the number of racks in a training job, the number of switch tiers, oversubscription at each tier, maximum fiber distance, connector type and expected traffic pattern. Include east-west collective traffic, checkpoint transfers and storage flows rather than relying on an average utilization figure.
Describe failure domains and operating targets
Write down whether a single link failure can stop a collective operation, isolate a rack, or be absorbed by alternate paths. Define the maximum tolerated packet loss, link-recovery time and job interruption. The Ethernet Alliance-hosted OIF panel emphasizes that link reliability and hardware reliability are distinct requirements for scale-up; a failed component can force a computation stop and restart. The panel is available as a technical presentation on 448G and optical reliability.

Compare capacity, port density and interoperability
Ask for both the advertised switching capacity and the usable line rate in the exact configuration you will buy. A headline terabit number does not reveal how many ports are available at your chosen rate, whether ports can be broken out, or how much capacity remains after the required topology is wired.

Check optical and protocol compatibility
For every connection, obtain written confirmation of:
- Supported per-lane and aggregate rates, including 200-Gb/s-per-channel operation where applicable.
- Reach, fiber type, connector polish and maximum insertion-loss budget.
- Compatible transceiver modes, including DR, linear pluggable optics (LPO) and CPO links.
- Breakout cables and the number of lanes exposed at each endpoint.
- IEEE 802.3 compliance and interoperability with the specific 400G and 800G interfaces in your design.
- NIC firmware, switch operating-system and telemetry requirements.
Broadcom says TH6-Davisson is designed to interconnect with DR transceivers and LPO/CPO links at 200 Gb/s per channel and to interoperate with existing 400G and 800G standards. Treat those as manufacturer statements: map them to exact part numbers and obtain a qualification report for your NICs, adjacent switches and optical modules.

Power comparisons become misleading when one vendor reports only an optical engine and another reports an entire switch. Request watts per port, watts per delivered bit, total switch input power, optical-engine and laser power, fan or pump power, and the cooling overhead needed to hold the specified temperature.
Use one measurement boundary
- Set the same line rate, port count, utilization and traffic pattern.
- Use the same fiber reach, connector count and error-performance target.
- Measure steady-state and peak power at the facility input, not only at the ASIC or optical engine.
- Record inlet temperature, airflow or coolant temperature, altitude assumptions and power-supply efficiency.
- Report power per active port and per delivered terabit, with inactive-port behavior shown separately.
Interpret the published claims
NVIDIA’s article says a 200-Gb/s electrical channel in a pluggable path may incur up to 22 dB of electrical loss and describes an approximately 4 dB CPO path with power as low as 9 W in its stated configuration. Broadcom says TH6-Davisson reduces optical-interconnect power by 70 percent versus traditional pluggable solutions. Those numbers use different product architectures and comparison boundaries; neither is a universal CPO saving percentage. Link to the source conditions whenever you place a figure in a business case: NVIDIA’s comparison and Broadcom’s announcement.
Ask for thermal maps and throttling behavior as well as nominal watts. A design that meets a power target only with liquid cooling may be advantageous in a high-density rack and impractical in an air-cooled room. Include pumps, coolant distribution units, fans, heat exchangers and controls in the facility model.

Metrics to request
- Bit-error rate and packet-loss rate at the target lane speed and reach.
- Correctable and uncorrectable code-word counts, with the threshold that triggers a link reset.
- Link-flap definition, event counters and time required to return to service.
- Number of ports, cumulative port-device hours, temperature range and traffic pattern.
- Thermal-cycling, vibration, humidity and contamination test conditions.
- Optical-engine, laser, connector and switch-ASIC hardware failure counts.
- Firmware behavior during a degraded lane, failed laser or loss of an optical engine.
Understand the reported one-million-hour results
Broadcom reported that Meta testing accumulated one million 400G-equivalent port-device hours without a link flap in a high-temperature laboratory characterization environment. Broadcom quoted Near Margalit, its Optical Systems Division general manager, saying, “Achieving one million link flap-free hours is a strong validation of Broadcom’s commitment to quality and innovation.” Read the October 1, 2025 Broadcom reliability release.
The Ethernet Alliance-hosted OIF panel separately quotes Meta’s statement that long-term reliability infrastructure recorded no uncorrectable code words for more than one million 400-Gb/s port-device hours of continuous operation. The quotation attributes the result to Siamak Amiralizadeh and colleagues’ ECOC 2025 presentation Tu.01.03.3. The panel is at ethernetalliance.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/OIF_TEF_Panel2_2512.pdf.
These are bounded reported tests, not a universal fleet failure rate or an MTBF calculation. The two reports may describe related test programs; do not present them as independent replications unless the underlying data sets are confirmed to be distinct. Ask for raw event definitions, confidence intervals, environmental exposure and field-return data before converting either figure into an availability model.
Test recovery, not just steady-state operation
During qualification, remove or degrade one optical path at a time and observe detection, isolation, traffic rerouting, job impact and restoration. Measure the elapsed time from alarm to a serviceable diagnosis. A link that fails safely and is replaced quickly may be preferable to one with a slightly lower nominal error count but opaque diagnostics.

Evaluate serviceability and diagnostics
CPO moves optics closer to the ASIC, so the replacement model must be explicit. Ask whether the optical engine is soldered, whether lasers are external, which assemblies can be replaced in the field and whether replacement requires draining coolant or removing the entire switch.
Questions for the system vendor
- Can an external laser or ELSFP module be replaced without replacing the switch?
- Is an optical engine field-replaceable, and what is the mean technician time under the support contract?
- Which telemetry identifies a failing lane, engine, laser, connector or thermal sensor?
- Are optical power, temperature, bias current, error counters and resets available through standard APIs?
- What cleaning, inspection and end-face procedures are required for the installed connector?
- What spare assemblies must be held on site, and how are serial numbers and firmware revisions tracked?
Broadcom identifies field-replaceable ELSFP laser modules for TH6-Davisson and describes integrated monitoring, diagnostics and thermal controls. Verify that the specific system integrator preserves those features and that the service-level agreement covers the replacement parts you will actually receive. Product-level marketing language does not establish your local repair time.
Plan fiber maintenance
Every CPO deployment still depends on clean, correctly seated fiber connectors. Specify inspection before insertion, cleaning compatible with the connector type, inspection after cleaning and optical-link testing after any patch-panel change. A generic fiber-optic connector cleaning kit can be a sensible maintenance category, but select it only after confirming connector geometry, end-face material and the supplier’s approved procedure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Separate announcement status from procurement readiness
Availability is a gate, not a footnote. Broadcom’s October 8, 2025 announcement said TH6-Davisson was sampling to early-access customers and partners at that date. That statement does not establish current production volume, lead time, pricing, support coverage or regional delivery. Confirm all of those with the switch vendor and integrator in writing.

The OIF panel notes that optical solutions have traditionally cost more than copper and identifies bidirectional traffic on one fiber as one approach to reducing fiber count and infrastructure cost. Model that option only when the endpoints, optics and service procedures support it; a lower fiber count does not automatically mean a lower installed cost.

Use a staged pilot before committing the fabric
- Freeze the reference design. Select the exact NICs, switch software, optical modes, cable lengths, connector types, rack power and cooling configuration. Record firmware and hardware revisions.
- Prove interoperability. Bring up every intended link and breakout combination. Check counters, lane mapping, discovery, management APIs and firmware upgrade or rollback behavior.
- Measure capacity and power together. Run representative collective, east-west and storage traffic at several utilization levels. Log facility-input power, inlet temperature, coolant conditions, packet loss and latency.
- Run a reliability soak. Keep the agreed port population active for a defined duration while collecting correctable errors, uncorrectable code words, link flaps, resets and thermal alarms. Report port-device hours so another bidder can be compared fairly.
- Inject failures. Pull or attenuate a fiber, disable a laser or optical path, introduce a dirty connector under controlled procedure and reboot a switch component. Measure detection, reroute, job impact, diagnosis and restoration.
- Exercise maintenance. Have the support team replace every field-replaceable part, perform inspection and cleaning, restore firmware and document the actual technician time and tools.
- Recalculate the business case. Replace quoted assumptions with pilot measurements, add spares and cooling, and model expansion, energy and outage costs.
Do not let a pilot become a vendor demonstration with a different port count, shorter reach or unusually light traffic than the production design. Preserve the logs and configuration so a second supplier can reproduce the same run.

Make the purchase decision with explicit gates
Advance a CPO switch only when it clears all four gates below:
- Architecture gate: the topology, port density, lane rate and reach match the AI cluster without hidden oversubscription.
- Operations gate: power and cooling fit the facility, and diagnostics and replacement procedures meet the recovery objective.
- Reliability gate: evidence covers the required error definitions, environmental conditions, exposure and failure handling rather than a single headline statistic.
- Procurement gate: the exact configuration is orderable, supported, interoperable and backed by a realistic lead-time and spare-parts commitment.
If a vendor cannot provide one of these proofs, record the gap as a conditional assumption with an owner and deadline. Do not substitute a claimed percentage power reduction or a laboratory port-hour result for missing production, service or interoperability evidence.
Bottom line for AI-data-center buyers
CPO is most compelling when electrical reach, rack density and scale-up traffic make conventional pluggable links a power or signal-integrity constraint. The correct choice is the system that delivers the required usable bandwidth while fitting your cooling plant, surviving the defined failure tests, interoperating with the complete fabric and offering a repair path your operations team can execute. Compare complete configurations under identical conditions, attribute every published number to its source and date, and treat availability and service commitments as hard acceptance criteria rather than marketing details.
