Evaluate co-packaged optics (CPO) as part of a complete switch and network path, not as an optical engine in isolation. CPO can shorten the electrical connection between switch silicon and optical conversion, potentially reducing signal-conditioning demands and enabling higher optical bandwidth density. Whether that advantage justifies a different thermal design, service model, and lifecycle cost depends on the specific switch, port configuration, workload, and operating environment.
What co-packaged optics is—and what changes in the network
In a conventional pluggable design, optical transceivers sit in front-panel cages and connect electrically to the switch ASIC over board traces. In CPO, optical engines are placed close to, or on the same package as, the switch silicon. Moving optical conversion closer shortens the high-speed electrical path between the ASIC and the optics. That can reduce electrical loss and the signal-conditioning burden, including the need for some digital signal processing (DSP) compensation, while allowing dense optical I/O.
The design moves rather than eliminates complexity. Optical engines, switch silicon, package design, cooling, fiber routing, optical alignment, assembly yield, diagnostics, and repair strategy become interdependent. The relevant unit for an operator is therefore the complete switch and optical path: switch ASIC, optical engines, laser arrangement, fibers and connectors, cooling system, management software, and service procedures.
Near-package optics (NPO) is another possible architecture in which optics are placed near the ASIC but not necessarily integrated on the same package. The exact boundary and implementation vary by design. Do not assume that every product labeled CPO or NPO has the same layout, service boundary, or power profile; obtain the architecture diagram and product-specific specifications.

Start with the network requirement, not a power claim
Write down the job the switch must perform before comparing architectures. Record the required port count and speed, optical reach, traffic pattern, oversubscription, latency and error objectives, chassis constraints, cooling conditions, and expected service life. Include the network around the switch: cabling routes, fiber connector density, redundancy, management tools, and the team’s ability to diagnose and replace components.
These requirements establish the comparison boundary. A CPO system and a pluggable system are not meaningfully comparable if they have different port rates, reach, traffic profiles, chassis, cooling assumptions, or included components. Ask vendors to state the configuration and test conditions for each published metric, then compare like with like.
- Capacity and reach: required aggregate bandwidth, per-port speed, number of ports, and supported optical reach for each link.
- Performance: latency, signal integrity, error performance, link stability, and behavior at the expected traffic load.
- Operating envelope: ambient and component temperatures, cooling method, available power, airflow or liquid-cooling constraints, and rack limits.
- Operations: diagnostics, telemetry, interoperability, redundancy, maintenance access, spare parts, and who is responsible for repair.
- Economics: acquisition cost, support, energy and cooling, installation, spares, expected repair work, and replacement over the planned lifecycle.
Compare CPO, pluggables, and near-package optics on equal terms
Pluggable optics remain a serious comparator, not an obsolete baseline. McKinsey & Company’s 2025 analysis says pluggables are expected to remain competitive on performance and total cost of ownership over the next five years, even as CPO gains momentum. That is an analyst outlook, not a guarantee for every product or site. Compare the architecture options using the same port speed, reach, workload, cooling assumptions, and system boundary.
| Evaluation dimension | CPO | Pluggable optics | Near-package optics |
|---|---|---|---|
| Optical placement | Optical engines are close to or on the same package as switch silicon; verify the specific product layout. | Transceivers are in front-panel cages and connect electrically to the switch ASIC over board traces. | Optics are placed near the ASIC, without necessarily sharing its package; verify the vendor’s definition and layout. |
| Electrical path | Shorter ASIC-to-optics path can reduce loss and signal-conditioning demands. | Longer electrical path than an integrated design; quantify the consequences for the particular switch and transceiver. | Intended to shorten the path relative to front-panel pluggables; product-specific performance is not stated in the cited sources. |
| Service boundary | Internal optical engines may be difficult to replace in the field. An external laser-source module, if used, does not make every internal optical component field-replaceable. | Transceivers are separate front-panel modules; confirm the actual replacement procedure and supported parts. | Depends on product construction; field-replacement details are not stated in the cited sources. |
| Power and density evidence | Vendor-reported power advantages exist, but the figures use different comparisons and boundaries; validate the exact configuration. | Use as the measured baseline at the same port speed, reach, workload, and system boundary. | Comparable power and density values are not stated in the cited sources. |
| Maturity and support | Market maturity is uneven and product-specific; verify shipment status, supported speeds, geography, software, and production references for the exact SKU. | McKinsey’s 2025 analysis expects pluggables to remain competitive over the next five years; confirm the selected supplier and product support. | Product-specific maturity and support details are not stated in the cited sources. |
The table describes architecture-level considerations, not guaranteed properties of every implementation. In particular, “shorter electrical path” does not by itself establish lower total system power, better reliability, lower cost, or easier operation. Those outcomes depend on the implementation and the boundary used to measure them.
Audit the power and deployment claims
Published headline figures can help identify questions for a vendor, but they are not interchangeable benchmarks. The scope, test setup, comparator, and system boundary matter as much as the number.

| 3.5× lower power consumption | NVIDIA’s 2025 developer articles report this comparison for its silicon-photonics approach against traditional pluggable transceivers. | Treat it as a vendor-reported comparison. Ask which system components are included, what configuration and workload were used, and how the result was measured. |
| 65% lower optics power | Broadcom’s 2025 announcement reports this comparison for its CPO solution versus pluggable module solutions, attributing the results to Meta testing. | It concerns optics power in the stated comparison; do not equate it to a 65% reduction in whole-switch or data-center power. |
| Up to 30% lower data-center energy consumption | McKinsey’s 2025 analysis cites projections for possible future CPO impact. | It is a projection, not an observed result across deployed facilities. Do not use it as a site-level forecast without a site-specific model. |
| 1.3× faster deployment | NVIDIA’s 2025 developer article gives this deployment comparison for its CPO switch. | It is a vendor claim about that comparison, not a general installation-time result for other suppliers or data centers. Request the scope, baseline, and conditions. |
For each power result, request the test method and a component-level breakdown. Establish whether the figure covers optical engines only, transceivers, DSP, switch silicon, fans or other cooling, and power conversion. Ask whether it is measured at the component, switch, rack, or facility boundary, and whether the systems were tested at equal throughput and reach. Translate a component claim into a site decision only after modeling the actual number of switches, utilization, cooling overhead, and operating hours.
Deployment time also needs a defined start and finish. Clarify whether the claim counts hardware installation, fiber routing and cleaning, configuration, validation, or time to production traffic. A design that reduces one installation step may still require new training, routing practices, diagnostics, or support processes.

Check thermal, fiber, and manufacturing integration
Thermal behavior is a system question: switch silicon and optical components share a constrained area, while dense optical I/O affects how fibers exit and route from the assembly. Ask for the total heat load, cooling design, qualified operating conditions, and evidence that link performance and monitoring remain within specification during sustained operation. Check whether the planned rack can provide the required cooling and whether the design changes maintenance access or airflow.
Fiber density creates practical constraints beyond port count. Examine insertion loss, connector density, bend management, contamination controls, alignment tolerances, fiber access, and the space available for routing and service. Determine how technicians will identify, clean, inspect, and reconnect fibers without disturbing adjacent links. Ask how alignment is maintained through assembly and under thermal or mechanical stress.
Manufacturability matters because a high-density design depends on precise integration and repeatable assembly. Request qualification information, production yield or other maturity evidence the supplier is willing to provide, and details on how manufacturing variation is detected. Corning’s July 23, 2026 discussion describes a possible CPO optical path involving more than 1,000 fibers in a constrained assembly. That is an example of the scale and integration challenge, not a universal fiber count or requirement for CPO systems.

Include the supplier’s support model in the evaluation. Ask who owns troubleshooting across the switch, optics, fiber assembly, and management software, and how escalations work when the fault crosses component boundaries. A tightly integrated system can concentrate responsibility as well as complexity; confirm that the support arrangement matches your operating model.
Make reliability evidence decision-grade
Ask for reliability evidence at the level of the links and conditions that matter to the deployment. Request link-flap and error-rate records, test duration, temperature and other test conditions, thermal qualification, diagnostics and monitoring capabilities, redundancy behavior, and failure-containment details. Find out how the system reports a degraded link and whether its telemetry can distinguish an optical-engine issue from a fiber, laser, or switch problem.
Broadcom’s 2025 announcement reports one million cumulative 400G-equivalent port device hours without a link flap in Meta high-temperature lab characterization. This is meaningful lab-test exposure for the described test, but it is neither a measured fleet failure rate nor a guarantee for another product configuration or deployment. The result does not establish how a different site’s workload, cooling, fiber handling, or operating conditions will affect reliability.
Ask vendors to explain how test evidence translates—or does not translate—to the proposed product, and request the denominator, conditions, and failure definitions behind any rate or hours figure. Distinguish accelerated or high-temperature characterization from field experience, and distinguish a link flap from other failure types. Where field references are offered, confirm that they cover the same product generation and operating conditions you are considering.
Determine what happens when a component fails
Serviceability can be one of the largest operational differences between an integrated optical design and a front-panel module. An internal optical engine may not be an ordinary field-replaceable unit. Some designs use external laser-source modules so that a laser can be accessed separately; that does not mean the internal optical engine, fiber assembly, or every other optical component can be replaced in the field.

Get the failure procedure in writing and identify the actual replacement unit for each failure class: external laser, optical subassembly, line card, or complete switch. For every case, establish who performs the work, whether the switch can stay in service, expected repair time, escalation path, and the inventory required to meet the site’s recovery objective. Ask which diagnostics identify the failed part and what evidence a technician needs before dispatching or swapping hardware.
Model the failure blast radius. Determine whether a failed engine affects one port, a group of ports, or more of the switch, and how redundant paths behave during detection and repair. Include the time required to obtain replacement parts, complete vendor authorization if applicable, and return the equipment to service. A lower component power figure does not compensate for a repair process that fails the network’s availability requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Build a like-for-like total cost of ownership
Compare total cost over the same evaluation period and traffic requirement, rather than comparing the purchase price of an optical engine with the price of a transceiver. Include switch and optical hardware, support, installation, power, cooling, spares, diagnostics, maintenance labor, repair or replacement, and expected lifecycle changes. Include the cost of retraining staff and changing fiber handling or monitoring processes where relevant.
Use more than one scenario if important inputs are uncertain: for example, different utilization levels, electricity or cooling assumptions, repair times, and spare-part strategies. Keep measured supplier data separate from assumptions, and label projections. McKinsey’s possible data-center energy reduction is a forward-looking projection, not a substitute for modeling a specific facility.

Verify maturity and roadmap for the exact SKU
Availability is time-sensitive and uneven across products. NVIDIA’s 2025 articles describe named switch families and anticipated availability windows, including early-2026 and second-half-2026 targets. An announced target does not establish that a specific SKU has shipped, is orderable in the required geography, or has the needed software and support today. Verify current shipment status directly for the exact part number and deployment location.
Before selecting a SKU, confirm supported speeds and reach, software and management support, interoperability requirements, warranty and support terms, production references, and the vendor’s lifecycle commitments. Ask whether the production configuration matches the one used for published claims. If a feature or availability window is not confirmed for the product you can buy and operate, exclude it from the business case until it is.
A practical evaluation sequence
- Define the target fabric. Document port speed and count, reach, traffic profile, latency and error objectives, redundancy, chassis, power, cooling, rack limits, and the required service life.
- Request architecture details. Obtain diagrams showing ASIC, optical engines, lasers, fibers, connectors, and the replacement boundary. Ask the supplier to clarify whether its implementation is CPO or NPO and what the label means for that product.
- Normalize the alternatives. Compare CPO with pluggables and, where relevant, NPO using equal port rates, reach, workload, chassis, cooling assumptions, and system boundary. Record configuration differences rather than hiding them in a headline number.
- Validate performance and power. Request test methods, error and stability records, latency, power breakdowns, cooling overhead, and operating conditions. Separate vendor claims, analyst projections, and measured results in the evaluation record.
- Review physical integration. Inspect thermal design, fiber access and bend paths, connector density, alignment and contamination controls, insertion loss, and evidence of qualification and repeatable manufacturing.
- Walk through failure scenarios. Ask the vendor to demonstrate diagnosis and replacement for an external laser, optical subassembly, line card, and full-switch failure as applicable. Record the service owner, repair time, blast radius, redundancy behavior, and spare strategy.
- Model lifecycle economics. Compare acquisition, deployment, energy, cooling, support, labor, spares, repairs, and replacement under consistent assumptions. Show sensitivity to uncertain inputs and do not combine figures with overlapping boundaries.
- Verify delivery and support. Confirm shipment status, geography, exact SKU, software and management support, production references, warranty, and lifecycle terms before treating a roadmap statement as an available capability.
- Set acceptance criteria. Define in advance what evidence is required for power, link stability, errors, temperature, diagnostics, replacement time, interoperability, and cost. Run a deployment-specific qualification or pilot if the purchasing decision depends on results that published claims do not establish.
How to make the decision
CPO is a strong candidate when its verified system-level power or bandwidth-density benefits solve a defined constraint, and when its thermal integration, optical routing, diagnostics, support, and repair model fit the site’s requirements. Pluggables remain a valid choice where their performance and lifecycle economics meet the target, or where front-panel replacement and established operating practices are more valuable than an unverified integration benefit. NPO deserves consideration when the product’s actual architecture and support model offer a useful compromise, but request product-specific evidence rather than assuming one from the category name.
