A clinic’s use of the words “stem cell,” “regenerative,” “FDA registered,” or “clinical trial” does not establish that its treatment is approved or effective. In the United States, check the exact product and intended use, ask for evidence that matches the clinic’s claim, and get independent medical advice before paying or enrolling. FDA materials state that the agency-approved stem-cell products are blood-forming cells derived from umbilical cord blood for certain disorders affecting blood production; FDA says there are no FDA-approved exosome products. Regulatory status can change, so confirm the current status for the specific product and use.

Start with the exact treatment, not the clinic’s label

“Stem cell therapy” and “regenerative medicine” are broad descriptions, not precise names for a treatment. A clinic might use cells, stromal vascular fraction, amniotic fluid, Wharton’s jelly, exosomes, or another material. Products may differ in their source, processing, contents, route of administration, dose, and intended use. Those details can affect what evidence applies and what regulatory questions to ask.

Before assessing a claim, ask the provider to put these details in writing:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Product identity and source: What exactly will be administered, and where does it come from?
  • Processing: How is it collected, prepared, or changed before use?
  • Administration: How will it be delivered, at what dose, and how many times?
  • Indication: What specific disease, injury, or symptom is it intended to treat?
  • Promised outcome: What change should the patient expect, how will it be measured, and over what period?

A scientific idea or a plausible biological mechanism is not proof that a particular product improves a particular condition. Evidence for one cell type, product, route, or disease does not automatically apply to another. Keep the proposed treatment’s details together: they are the basis for checking both its authorization and the relevance of any studies the clinic cites.

Is stem cell therapy FDA approved?

Approval in the United States is specific to a product and its authorized use; it is not a general endorsement of every treatment described as regenerative. FDA patient materials state that the agency-approved stem-cell products consist of hematopoietic progenitor cells derived from umbilical cord blood. Those products are approved for certain disorders affecting blood production, not for unrelated conditions. FDA also says there are no FDA-approved exosome products.

These are statements from FDA materials, including pages dated 2019–2021, and they should not be treated as a live status check for every product in 2026. Approvals and enforcement actions can change. Ask the clinic for the exact product name and the specific FDA approval evidence for the proposed condition and use, then confirm current status with FDA. A treatment’s general category, a provider’s credentials, or a claim that cells come from the patient does not answer whether that specific product is approved for that specific use.

The distinction matters if a clinic claims approval for a use beyond the blood disorders described above. Ask the provider to identify the precise authorized indication, not merely to show a product page, a company registration, or a general statement about FDA involvement. If it cannot provide a clear answer and documentation, pause and ask an independent clinician or FDA rather than relying on the clinic’s interpretation.

Does a ClinicalTrials.gov listing mean a treatment is approved?

No. A study’s appearance in ClinicalTrials.gov does not establish that its treatment is FDA-approved, that the treatment works, or that the clinic may legally market it. FDA materials also caution that a company’s registration or listing with the agency does not by itself mean a product is legally marketed. A trial number or an “FDA registered” claim is not a substitute for product approval.

A study listing can help you identify a proposed investigation, but it is only a starting point. Ask whether the offer is actually part of an FDA-overseen clinical trial and whether the clinic is enrolling patients under the study described. Compare the study’s product, condition, route, dose, population, and intended outcomes with the treatment being offered and the claims being made. A listed study may concern a different use or stage of development.

What to ask if the offer is described as an exosome trial

FDA’s consumer alert advises people considering an exosome investigation to ask the investigator for the FDA-issued Investigational New Drug (IND) number and the communication acknowledging the IND. Request the documents, not just a verbal assurance or a number in an advertisement. Read the informed-consent materials before deciding. An IND is part of an investigational process; it is not FDA approval to market an exosome product as an established treatment.

How to assess the evidence behind the promised result

Evidence is useful only to the extent that it addresses the treatment and claim in front of you. A study of a different product, a different route of administration, another patient group, or a different disease may not support the clinic’s promise. Ask the provider to explain how the evidence maps to the exact offer, rather than accepting a list of papers or a broad claim that “stem cells have been studied.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match the evidence to the clinic’s claim

  • Product: Is the study testing the same material and preparation, rather than a treatment that merely shares a broad label?
  • Condition and outcome: Does it study the condition you have and measure the outcome the clinic promises?
  • Route and dose: Were the material and dose administered in the same way?
  • Patient population: Are the participants sufficiently similar to the people the clinic says it can help?
  • Study design and results: What outcomes were measured, what did the results show, and have findings been published?
  • Limitations and risks: What remains uncertain, and what harms or failures were observed?

Ask which phase the study is in, who is responsible for conducting it, and how patients’ progress and adverse events are monitored. Find out whether independent ethical oversight applies, what consent covers, and whether you can withdraw. Ask about costs, follow-up, alternatives, and what happens if your condition worsens or the treatment does not help. A study’s existence is not evidence of a positive result; the design and findings matter.

The International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) says safety and effectiveness should be demonstrated in well-designed clinical trials with regulator approval before new interventions are offered directly to patients or used as standard care. That guidance underscores why a clinic should be able to explain the evidence and oversight behind an offer. It does not mean every study has proved benefit, nor that a trial listing alone establishes that a treatment is standard care.

There is no single efficacy statistic that applies to regenerative medicine treatments as a whole. A number detached from the product, indication, study design, and patient group can mislead. Ask for results from studies of the exact proposed treatment and condition; if the clinic cannot provide them, treat the claimed benefit as unestablished rather than filling the gap with a general statistic.

How to tell whether a clinic’s claims are a reason to pause

Promotional language can sound scientific without establishing safety or effectiveness. The Federal Trade Commission warns consumers that professional-looking websites and testimonials from “real people” do not prove a health claim. Personal stories may describe an individual’s experience, but they cannot show what caused an improvement, how often it occurs, or whether the same result is likely for another patient.

  • A cure or guaranteed result: Ask what controlled evidence supports the promise and whether the stated outcome was measured in comparable patients.
  • One treatment for many unrelated conditions: Request evidence separately for each condition. Results in one disease do not establish results in another.
  • Testimonials or dramatic before-and-after stories: Ask for study results that measure outcomes systematically, not selected anecdotes.
  • “Natural,” “your own cells,” or “minimally manipulated” used as proof: Those descriptions do not, by themselves, establish that a treatment is safe, effective, or FDA-approved.
  • Pressure to stop established care: Do not discontinue prescribed treatment on a seller’s advice. Discuss the proposal with a qualified clinician who is not relying on the clinic’s claims.
  • Missing documentation: Be cautious if the provider will not identify the product, explain the evidence, describe oversight, or provide consent and risk information.

FDA has described enforcement against a company marketing unapproved products for numerous serious conditions. In a separate consumer-protection action, the FTC announced in January 2025 that named Stem Cell Institute of America co-founders and companies were subject to more than $5.1 million in refunds and civil penalties. That figure describes an enforcement case; it is not a measure of treatment efficacy or an estimate of how common deceptive marketing is. The practical lesson is to judge the evidence and documents behind an offer, rather than treating persuasive sales material as proof.

What risks should you weigh?

FDA’s patient information lists reports associated with illegally marketed regenerative products that include blindness, tumor formation, neurological events, serious bacterial infections—including life-threatening blood infections—immune or inflammatory reactions, unintended cell movement or tissue growth, and delay or loss of effective treatment. These are reported safety concerns, not inevitable outcomes of every regenerative treatment. Their relevance depends on the actual product and use, which is another reason to obtain precise information before making a decision.

Ask the provider to explain the risks known for the specific product and route, how complications would be recognized and treated, what follow-up is planned, and whom to contact after treatment. Request a written account of alternatives, including established care and the consequences of delaying it. If the clinic discusses benefits at length but cannot explain uncertainties, harms, or follow-up, you do not have enough information to weigh the decision responsibly.

A practical checklist before paying or enrolling

Use this sequence to organize a conversation with the provider and an independent clinician. Keep copies of the offer, product information, study materials, consent form, and answers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Get the offer in specific terms. Write down the product and source, how it is processed, how it will be administered, the condition it targets, and the outcome the clinic promises.
  2. Ask for evidence that matches. Request human study results for the same product, indication, route, dose, patient population, and outcome. Ask about the study phase, design, results, publication, risks, and follow-up.
  3. Check the regulatory claim. Ask, “Is this exact product approved by FDA for this exact condition and use?” Request product-specific approval evidence. Do not treat a registry entry, registration, listing, or trial number as proof of approval.
  4. If it is experimental, establish the oversight details. Ask whether the offer is part of an FDA-overseen clinical trial, who the investigators are, what consent says, what ethical oversight applies, and what costs, alternatives, and withdrawal rights are involved. For an exosome trial, request the FDA-issued IND number and the communication acknowledging it.
  5. Read the consent and risk information before agreeing. Make sure you understand expected benefits, uncertainties, possible harms, aftercare, and the plan if the treatment causes a problem or does not help. Do not sign under sales pressure.
  6. Seek an independent medical opinion. Discuss the proposal with a qualified clinician who is not depending on the seller’s claims. Ask how it compares with established treatment and whether delay could affect your care.
  7. Compare the full decision, not just the advertised result. Consider the strength and directness of evidence, regulatory status, oversight, known risks, follow-up, total cost and what it includes, and whether established care would be displaced.
  8. Pause when basic answers are withheld. Take the documents to an independent clinician or contact FDA with regulatory questions instead of paying or enrolling on the basis of an assurance you cannot verify.

Where to direct questions or report a problem

FDA encourages consumers to contact the agency with questions about products and offers and to report adverse events through MedWatch. FDA’s consumer alert lists (800) 835-4709 and ocod@fda.hhs.gov as contact details. Because contact information and regulatory status can change, check FDA’s current consumer information before relying on those details. For a medical emergency, seek urgent medical care rather than waiting for a regulatory response.

When contacting FDA or reporting an adverse event, retain the provider’s written claims, product name, treatment date, consent materials, and any study or regulatory documents. Clear records can help describe what was offered or administered. A report is not itself a finding that a product caused harm, but it gives the agency information about a possible safety problem.

How to compare two offers without being distracted by marketing

If you are comparing clinics or proposals, use the same questions for each and record the answers side by side. A lower advertised price or more confident promise does not resolve a gap in evidence or oversight. Compare the following points:

  • Identity: Exact product, source, processing, route, dose, and proposed use.
  • Evidence: Human results for the same product and condition, and how directly the study population and outcome match the claim.
  • Oversight: Whether it is approved for that use or part of a genuine investigation, with protocol, consent, responsible investigators, and applicable independent ethical oversight.
  • Risk and follow-up: Known concerns, complication response, monitoring, and duration of aftercare.
  • Financial and care consequences: Total cost and included services, alternatives, and whether established treatment will be delayed or stopped.
  • Transparency: Willingness to provide documents, answer questions, and let you consult an independent clinician before deciding.

If one provider will not disclose basic details, that is meaningful information about the decision. Do not infer that another clinic’s more polished presentation makes its treatment effective; apply the same evidence and regulatory checks to every offer.

What FDA and consumer guidance can—and cannot—tell you

FDA’s patient and safety materials help explain U.S. regulatory status, the difference between investigational activity and marketing approval, and reported concerns. FTC guidance addresses how consumers should evaluate health claims and testimonials. ISSCR guidance describes the need for well-designed trials and regulator approval before new interventions are offered directly to patients or become standard care.

These sources do not establish that every treatment carrying a regenerative label has the same risks, nor do they provide one success rate for the field. They also do not settle authorization outside the United States. If you are considering treatment in another country, check that jurisdiction’s regulator and rules. For a U.S. offer, confirm current FDA status for the exact product and intended use, then make the medical decision with an independent qualified clinician.
