Evaluate cement stocks by comparing regional demand exposure, sales volume and capacity use, realisation per tonne, costs, expansion returns, balance-sheet strength and valuation—on consistent reporting periods and definitions. This guide focuses on Indian cement issuers, using ACC, Ambuja Cements and JSW Cement as examples. It is a comparison framework, not a buy or sell recommendation; check each company’s latest results before acting.

Start with the market each company can actually serve

Cement is bulky, so a producer’s economics depend not only on national construction demand but also on where its plants and customers are, how efficiently it can move product, and how intense local competition is. A company with strong national sales can still face pressure in a region where competitors add capacity or freight makes deliveries less economical.

Assess the issuer’s exposure to housing, infrastructure and other construction activity in its operating regions. Then compare expected demand with announced capacity additions: if supply grows faster than local demand, producers may have to compete harder on price or run plants below capacity. ACC’s FY 2025-26 annual report described Indian cement demand growth of 6.5–7.5% for that year and forecast around 5% for FY 2026-27. These are ACC’s issuer-reported estimate and outlook, respectively—not independently verified realized results or a guarantee for any company. ACC’s business-opportunities disclosure also discusses sector conditions and risks.

Use those demand figures as context, not as a substitute for company-level analysis. A national growth estimate does not tell you whether demand is strong in every state or district where a particular producer competes. Check the geographic footprint and logistics reach in company disclosures, then ask whether announced supply additions are located in the same markets. Where a company does not provide enough geographic detail to make that assessment, note the limitation rather than assuming that national growth will benefit it uniformly.

Demand itself is not the only variable. Housing and infrastructure activity can support consumption, but the timing of projects, capacity schedules and competitive behaviour affect how much demand becomes sales and at what price. Forecasts should be treated as management or issuer expectations unless independently established otherwise. Refresh them against the company’s latest results and disclosures, particularly when conditions affecting construction, fuel, freight or capacity change.

Compare volume, utilisation and selling realisation together

Sales volume indicates how much cement a company sold, but it does not show whether the added volume was profitable. Read volume beside plant or capacity utilisation, realisation per tonne and geographic or product mix. A producer may sell more while earning less per tonne if prices weaken, lower-priced products gain share, or costs rise.

For a consistent comparison, check how each company defines its metrics and what period and consolidation scope they cover. JSW Cement’s prospectus defines cement realisation per tonne as cement sales revenue divided by cement volume sold; use company-specific definitions consistently rather than assuming every issuer calculates the measure identically. See JSW Cement’s red-herring prospectus.

  • Track cement sales volume and its year-over-year change.
  • Compare utilisation with installed capacity, distinguishing capacity already operating from capacity still being commissioned or planned.
  • Review realisation per tonne and changes in regional and product mix.
  • Check whether sales growth is accompanied by stable or improving per-tonne earnings.

As a scale example, ACC reported annual cement sales volume of 43.9 million tonnes for FY 2025-26. That is a company- and year-specific disclosure, not a target or a like-for-like comparison with another issuer unless reporting periods and scope align. ACC’s financial-capital disclosure contains the volume figure and related financial information.

Keep volume, utilisation and capacity definitions distinct. Sales volume records output sold over a period; capacity describes production potential, and utilisation relates production to a capacity base. A company may report a higher volume after adding capacity without improving the use of its existing plants. Conversely, utilisation can improve even when total volume is smaller than that of a larger rival. Look for the denominator and scope used for utilisation, and avoid comparing an operating capacity figure at one issuer with a target or planned capacity figure at another.

When a company reports volume growth, trace what may have contributed: existing plants, newly commissioned facilities, acquired operations, or changes in product and geographic mix. Then check whether the additional sales are reflected in realisation and per-tonne earnings. The point is not to require every measure to rise together in every period, but to understand the trade-off. Higher volume with weaker realisation may still have a different investment implication from higher volume accompanied by stable per-tonne economics.

Test whether pricing and product mix support margins

Premium products, branded trade sales and blended cement can influence realisation and input use. A rising premium share may support selling prices, while blended products can change the amount or type of inputs required. Neither label alone establishes better profitability: compare mix changes with realisation and EBITDA per tonne over the same period.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ACC reported that premium cement represented 44% of trade sales and blended cement 84% of sales in FY 2025-26. Those percentages use the categories and bases described in ACC’s report; do not assume another company reports a directly comparable mix measure. ACC’s financial-capital disclosure and strategic-priorities disclosure provide the company’s descriptions.

Read the denominator carefully: ACC’s premium figure is a share of trade sales, while its blended-cement figure is described as a share of sales. They are not interchangeable percentages. For a peer comparison, verify whether the other issuer uses trade sales, total sales, volume or another base, and whether the categories themselves match. If they do not, treat the figures as company-specific indicators rather than ranking one business above another by headline share.

Mix is useful only when connected to economics. Check whether a reported shift toward premium or blended products coincides with improved realisation or EBITDA per tonne, and whether the comparison uses the same period. A product-mix gain could be offset by weaker prices or rising fuel, freight and raw-material costs. Likewise, a percentage alone does not reveal the scale of the business or whether the mix has changed enough to affect total results.

Track unit costs against realisation

Examine power and fuel, freight, raw materials and other costs per tonne where issuers disclose them. Compare each cost’s direction with realisation and EBITDA per tonne: if input and delivery costs rise faster than selling prices, margins may compress even as volume grows. Global energy markets, logistics constraints and currency movements can affect costs, as ACC noted in its FY 2025-26 business-opportunities discussion.

ACC reported FY 2025-26 raw-material costs of ₹818 per tonne and power-and-fuel costs of ₹829 per tonne. It also reported EBITDA of ₹672 per tonne, including other income. The inclusion of other income and the company’s definitions matter when comparing this measure with peers; these figures are examples from ACC’s disclosures, not sector benchmarks or a forecast. See ACC’s strategic-priorities and progress disclosure.

Do not subtract or combine the quoted cost lines mechanically to recreate a margin unless the issuer’s full cost definition and accounting presentation support that calculation. The numbers are disclosed indicators, and the EBITDA-per-tonne figure explicitly includes other income. For another company, check whether its reported EBITDA measure has the same inclusion, whether costs are shown on the same basis, and whether the period is comparable.

A practical way to read the cost stack is to make a small trend table for each issuer: reported realisation per tonne, power and fuel, freight, raw materials, other disclosed costs, and EBITDA per tonne. Mark the fiscal period and definition beside every item. The direction of each line matters more than an isolated number: costs may rise but be offset by improved realisation, or costs may remain steady while selling prices fall. Compare the net effect on per-tonne earnings rather than treating any single input cost as a complete measure of competitiveness.

Also distinguish operating performance from external pressure. ACC identified energy markets, logistics constraints and currency movements as cost pressures. These factors can change, and one issuer’s exposure may not match another’s. A cost figure from one year is therefore not a permanent feature of the business or a reliable forecast for the next year.

Judge expansion by execution and returns, not targets

Capacity growth can increase future sales potential, but it also commits capital and may add supply before demand catches up. Separate installed, commissioned and planned capacity. For recently built or acquired assets, assess ramp-up, utilisation and integration rather than treating the announced capacity as productive output from day one.

  1. Record current operating capacity, additions already commissioned and future plans separately.
  2. Compare each addition’s schedule with local demand and competing capacity.
  3. Review capital expenditure, its funding source and the expected operating contribution.
  4. After commissioning or acquisition, follow utilisation and per-tonne returns to see whether the investment is earning adequately.

ACC disclosed ₹1,445 crore of growth capex/investment in FY 2025-26. Ambuja’s annual report describes capacity additions and integration, while JSW Cement’s FY 2024-25 report offers a contrasting example involving debt and utilisation. These issuer reports provide company-specific context; expansion targets are management plans, not proof of future earnings. See ACC’s strategic-priorities disclosure, Ambuja Cements’ annual reports and JSW Cement’s annual reports.

Capacity announcements should be read in stages. An announced project is not the same as capacity under construction; capacity under construction is not the same as capacity commissioned; and commissioned capacity may need time to ramp up. Record the status and expected timing stated by the issuer, then revisit it in later reports. This helps prevent a planned addition from being counted as current production capability or near-term revenue.

Expansion can affect both sides of the comparison. New assets may broaden a regional footprint or increase potential sales, but they also require capital and can add supply to markets where demand is not keeping pace. Consider the funding source alongside the project schedule and subsequent utilisation. If an acquisition is part of the growth plan, include integration progress in the review rather than assuming that acquired capacity immediately produces the expected operating contribution.

ACC’s ₹1,445 crore figure is growth capex/investment for a specific financial year, not a universal spending benchmark. Use comparable issuer disclosures to understand each company’s spending and plans, but do not infer returns from expenditure alone. The investor’s follow-up question is whether the added or integrated capacity is being used and whether per-tonne economics support the capital committed. Targets and management expectations can inform that question, but they remain forward-looking until results demonstrate execution.

Check debt, cash and working-capital needs

Review borrowings, finance costs, cash, working capital and cash generation relative to operating earnings. A growing producer may need substantial funding for capacity expansion; debt can increase financial risk if returns arrive slowly or demand weakens. Read the reporting date and consolidation scope carefully, and align the definition of net debt and EBITDA before comparing leverage.

ACC reported zero debt, ₹918 crore in cash and cash equivalents, and 45 days of working capital for FY 2025-26. JSW Cement reported debt and disclosed its own net-debt/EBITDA definition in its FY 2024-25 reporting. The dates differ, so these examples are not a direct balance-sheet ranking. Consult ACC’s financial-capital disclosure and JSW Cement’s FY 2024-25 annual report, then compare companies on matched dates and definitions.

Zero debt does not by itself settle the financial-strength question. Read it alongside cash, working capital, finance costs, cash generation and planned investment. A company can have a different funding profile because it is at a different stage of expansion. Similarly, reported debt should not be judged without the earnings measure and definition used to calculate leverage. Align whether figures are standalone or consolidated, their fiscal dates, and the issuer’s treatment of cash and debt before drawing a conclusion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Working capital is another useful part of the picture because it indicates the resources tied up in the operating cycle. ACC’s 45-day figure is a reported FY 2025-26 example, not a target for the sector. Check how the issuer defines the measure and whether its reported figure is calculated consistently across periods. Use working-capital information with cash generation and debt rather than treating any single number as proof of financial resilience.

Assess valuation without treating a multiple as a verdict

Useful comparison measures include enterprise value/EBITDA, price/earnings and, where suitable, enterprise value per tonne of capacity. Compare a consistent peer set and the company’s own history using matching periods, accounting scope and debt treatment. Consider whether earnings are unusually high or low in the cycle and whether the share price already reflects planned capacity and anticipated growth.

A multiple is not inherently cheap or expensive in isolation. The available company disclosures here do not establish a current independent peer valuation range or a fair-value threshold. Any valuation conclusion therefore needs current market prices, comparable financial periods and a transparent peer set beyond the issuer examples in this guide.

Each measure answers a different question. P/E relates the share price to earnings attributable to shareholders; enterprise-value measures incorporate a company’s financing context, so debt treatment matters. Enterprise value per tonne can be a capacity-oriented comparison, but it does not by itself measure utilisation, cost efficiency, product mix or returns on capital. These ratios should supplement—not replace—the operating review above.

Use a valuation table only after putting the inputs on consistent terms: market-price date, reporting period, standalone or consolidated earnings, and treatment of debt and cash. Then compare the company with an appropriate peer set and its own history. Even a like-for-like multiple comparison needs context: earnings may be at a cyclical high or low, and announced capacity growth may already be reflected in the share price. No current company disclosures establish a “normal” multiple or a fair-value cutoff, so avoid presenting one as a universal buy signal.

Use a like-for-like comparison checklist

Before ranking cement companies, put their figures on the same basis. Annual reports are management disclosures: distinguish historical results from outlooks, and refresh volatile inputs such as demand, energy and fuel, freight, exchange rates, capacity schedules and leverage using current company results.

  • Regional demand, logistics reach and local competition
  • Sales volume, operating capacity and utilisation
  • Realisation per tonne, premium or trade share, and blended-product mix
  • Power, fuel, freight and raw-material costs per tonne
  • Capex, commissioning progress, integration and returns on added capacity
  • Debt, cash, working capital and cash generation
  • Valuation multiples, aligned for period, scope, debt and cycle

For each figure, record whether it is standalone or consolidated, the fiscal date or period, the issuer’s metric definition and whether it is a reported result or management expectation. This prevents a headline volume, capacity target or balance-sheet figure from obscuring what the investment comparison is actually measuring.

A simple comparison sheet can make gaps visible without pretending to produce an automatic ranking. Give each company a column and each item above a row. Add source, period, scope and definition next to the reported figure. Where an issuer has not disclosed a comparable measure, mark it as unavailable rather than filling the gap with an assumption. That discipline is especially important when one example comes from FY 2025-26 and another from FY 2024-25, or when one measure comes from a prospectus and another from an annual report.

Once the facts are aligned, explain the trade-offs. One company may have a different regional footprint, another may show a distinct expansion programme, and a third may disclose different debt or utilisation information. Those are reasons to investigate further, not sufficient grounds to declare a winner. Assess operating evidence, capital commitments and valuation together, and revisit conclusions when new results update the underlying data.

Frequently asked questions

Which cement stocks should I buy?

This framework does not identify a stock to buy. It supports comparing issuers on demand exposure, operating performance, costs, expansion, balance-sheet strength and valuation, but it does not establish current fair values or a recommendation. Use current company results and market prices to assess those factors for your own circumstances.

How do I compare cement companies?

Compare them on the same seven axes: regional market and demand exposure; volume and utilisation; realisation and product mix; energy, freight and raw-material costs; capex execution and returns; debt, cash generation and working capital; and valuation. Align fiscal period, standalone or consolidated scope, debt treatment and metric definitions before ranking any figures.

Is higher cement sales volume always a good sign?

Not on its own. Volume shows how much was sold, not the price received or profit earned on each tonne. Read it with utilisation, realisation per tonne, product and regional mix, costs and EBITDA per tonne. Higher sales can coincide with weaker per-tonne earnings if prices fall or costs rise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a higher premium or blended-cement share prove better profitability?

No. Such mix measures can help explain realisation or input intensity, but definitions and denominators differ, and a mix gain may be offset by other pressures. Compare the issuer’s stated basis and track changes alongside realisation and per-tonne earnings for the same period.

How should I assess a cement company’s capacity expansion?

Separate operating, commissioned and planned capacity; compare project timing with local demand and competing supply; review capex and its funding; and track ramp-up, integration, utilisation and per-tonne returns after the asset comes on stream. A target is a management expectation, not evidence that future earnings will be delivered.

Can ACC’s reported figures be compared directly with JSW Cement’s?

Not without adjustments. The examples cited here cover different fiscal years, and issuers may use different metric definitions, consolidation scopes or reporting dates. Align those bases first. ACC’s FY 2025-26 figures and JSW Cement’s FY 2024-25 examples illustrate what to examine; they do not establish a direct ranking.

Which valuation multiple is best for cement stocks?

No single multiple settles the question. EV/EBITDA, P/E and potentially enterprise value per tonne each have limits. Use matching periods, scope and debt treatment, compare a consistent peer set and the company’s history, and account for where earnings sit in the cycle. The available company disclosures do not provide an authoritative current valuation range or fair-value threshold.
