Evaluate a carbon removal credit as a claim about a specific project, method and registry record—not as a generic “carbon offset.” Before paying, verify that the activity removes carbon dioxide already in the atmosphere, calculate whether the stated tonnes are net of the activity’s own emissions, test additionality, examine storage duration and reversal remedies, and confirm independent verification and retirement in a registry. Then compare delivery timing, safeguards, contractual risk and price on those same dimensions. A framework label can help you screen an offer, but it does not replace project-level diligence.
What you are actually buying
A credit is useful only when its attributes match the claim you intend to make. Start by recording the exact unit offered, the removal method, project name and location, crediting standard or program, methodology, registry, issuance or delivery status, and serial-number range if available. Ask whether the unit represents a measured atmospheric removal or an avoided emission. Those are different climate claims and must not be treated as interchangeable.
The method determines the main technical risks. A project may face uncertainty in measuring the amount removed, emissions from energy and transport, leakage outside its system boundary, or release of stored carbon later. The offer should identify who bears each risk and what happens if the promised tonnes are not delivered.

- Removal claim: carbon dioxide is taken from the atmosphere and stored in a defined reservoir.
- Avoidance or reduction claim: an emission that might otherwise have occurred is prevented or reduced.
- Unit status: distinguish issued credits, forward offtake commitments, and delivered credits that can already be retired.
- Claim rights: establish who may make the climate claim after transfer and retirement.

Read the methodology before the marketing page
A project summary is not the measurement rule. The methodology is the method-specific rule set for quantification, monitoring, storage and risk management. CDR.fyi describes the project’s boundary and baseline as foundational parts of the monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) process: CDR.fyi buyer guide: MRV process.
Map the system boundary
List every process included in the calculation: sourcing or growing feedstock, preprocessing, energy generation, facility operations, transport, injection or placement, downstream storage and monitoring. Check which emissions are inside the boundary and which are excluded. An apparently large gross removal can become a much smaller net removal after fuel, electricity, materials, transport and processing emissions are deducted.
Understand the baseline
The baseline is the counterfactual: what would happen without the project. Read the evidence supporting that scenario and identify assumptions that materially change the credited quantity. If the baseline is vague, based on an outdated practice or not independently justified, the claimed tonnes may not represent a real difference from business as usual.
Check inputs and downstream fate
Confirm the origin and eligibility of feedstock or other inputs, the energy source, transport distances and the final storage reservoir. The methodology should explain how each input is tracked and how losses, contamination, degradation or leakage are handled. Follow the carbon after the removal step; “captured” is not the same as “stored.”
Look for conservative treatment of uncertainty
Find the equations, sampling frequency, default factors and uncertainty deductions. Ask how missing data, equipment failures and out-of-range measurements affect issuance. A credible methodology states when credits are withheld, discounted or corrected rather than silently treating an estimate as a measured tonne.
Test additionality instead of assuming it
Additionality asks whether the removal would occur without the incentive created by credit revenue. The Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) states in Core Carbon Principle 5: “The greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions or removals from the mitigation activity shall be additional, i.e., they would not have occurred in the absence of the incentive created by carbon credit revenues.” Read the principle at ICVCM’s Core Carbon Principles.
Ask the developer to show the financial and regulatory counterfactual, not merely to assert that the project is innovative. Useful evidence can include the project’s investment decision, dependence on credit income, competing revenue, legal obligations and the date construction or operation began. A project that is already profitable, legally required or fully financed without credits may have a weak additionality case.

- What would the operator do if credit revenue disappeared?
- Was the activity legally required or already common practice?
- Does the methodology set an objective additionality test, and is it applied to this project?
- Are credits issued for activity that began before the eligibility date?
Do not confuse an expensive project with an additional one. Cost can explain why finance is needed, but only evidence about the counterfactual supports the claim.
Verify that the quantity is net atmospheric removal
Review the calculation from gross capture or uptake to net tonnes credited. The methodology should account for operational emissions, electricity, fuel, materials, construction where relevant, transport, processing losses and any emissions caused elsewhere by diverted inputs or land use. Check whether the calculation uses measured data or defaults and whether the verifier tests the inputs.
Separate delivered tonnes from forecast tonnes
A forward purchase may refer to a future delivery, while an issued credit represents a quantity already accepted into a registry. Record the measurement period, expected issuance date, delivery schedule, tolerance for shortfall and refund or replacement terms. Do not describe a forecast as achieved removal.
Check allocation and ownership
Where a project has several purchasers, confirm how tonnes are allocated and whether any environmental attributes are sold separately. The contract should identify the exact unit, vintage or delivery period, registry account and the party responsible for correcting an over-issuance or failed delivery.

Ask how uncertainty changes issuance
Find out whether the standard applies deductions, confidence intervals, conservative defaults or buffer contributions before issuing credits. If the documentation reports only a gross figure, request the net credited amount and the calculation workbook or equivalent record that supports it.
Assess storage duration and reversal risk
Durability is not a single word such as “permanent.” Compare the storage reservoir, stated duration, monitoring period, plausible biological or geological reversal pathways and the remedy if carbon is released. ICVCM’s Core Carbon Principle 6 says: “The GHG emission reductions or removals from the mitigation activity shall be permanent or, where there is a risk of reversal, there shall be measures in place to address those risks and compensate reversals.” The full principles are at ICVCM’s Core Carbon Principles.
Distinguish a remedy from permanence
A pooled buffer, insurance arrangement or replacement-credit obligation compensates for a reversal; it does not make a reversal impossible. Identify the accountable party, trigger for a reversal declaration, deadline for replacement and source of replacement units. Check whether the remedy covers the entire credited amount or only a percentage.

Check monitoring and liability periods
Read how long the project must monitor the storage site and what happens after the formal crediting period. For certain high-reversal-risk methodologies, ICVCM’s current assessment guidance requires 40 years of monitoring and compensation, pooled buffer reserves and clear accountability. That is a requirement for specified categories under that framework, not a universal guarantee that every removal remains stored for 40 years or forever; see ICVCM’s methodology assessment approach.

For biological storage, examine fire, disease, harvest, land-use change and decay scenarios where applicable. For geological or engineered storage, examine leakage, well integrity, measurement failure and site-closure obligations where applicable. The project documents should connect each material pathway to monitoring, response and compensation.
Demand independent validation and verification
Validation checks whether the project design and methodology can support crediting. Verification checks reported activity and removals for a defined monitoring period. They are different checks, and a project should identify the independent body that performed each one.
Use the registry record as the starting point. Obtain the project development document, applied methodology, validation report, verification report, monitoring plan, issuance record and stakeholder comments. RMI’s buyer guide recommends using these records and, when needed, specialist third parties for quality, risk, ratings, governance, MRV and market analysis: RMI Buyers Guide (June 2024).
- Confirm the verifier is independent of the project developer and has the required scope.
- Match the verification period to the credits being offered.
- Check findings, corrective actions, qualifications and unresolved issues.
- Compare the verified quantity with the quantity marketed or contracted.
- Read stakeholder comments and the project’s responses, not just the executive summary.
If a critical document is unavailable, ask for it in writing. A seller’s refusal to disclose a methodology, verification opinion or monitoring record is a material diligence concern, regardless of branding.
Trace credits in the registry and prevent double counting
Every delivered unit should be traceable through a registry using unique serial numbers or equivalent identifiers. Follow the chain from issuance to transfers and confirm that the units have not already been retired. Retirement removes a credit from further transfer and is normally the point at which the buyer can support a claim tied to that unit.
ICVCM treats double counting as three separate problems: double issuance, double claiming and double use. Its definitions and safeguards appear in the Core Carbon Principles. Check each one:

- Double issuance: the same removal is represented by more than one issued unit.
- Double claiming: the project and a purchaser both claim the same removal.
- Double use: one unit is used for more than one compensation or achievement claim.
Before payment or final acceptance, obtain the registry account details, serial-number range, ownership record, retirement instructions and retirement confirmation. Keep the retirement certificate with the contract, invoice and claim wording. If a credit is retired on your behalf, verify that the retirement record names the correct beneficiary and purpose.
Review environmental and social safeguards
Quality is more than tonnes. Examine land, water, biodiversity, worker safety, community participation, Indigenous or local rights where relevant, grievance channels and disclosure of adverse impacts. Look for a safeguards policy, impact assessment, consultation record and evidence that complaints are tracked and resolved.

The Oxford Smith School report and ICVCM principles both place safeguards and transparent information within a buyer’s evaluation, but neither source supplies jurisdiction-specific legal advice. Align any public claim with the actual attributes of the retired units and the rules that apply in the market where you communicate it.
Use the CCP label accurately
ICVCM’s Core Carbon Principles label is not awarded merely because a program appears on a list. ICVCM says a label requires both a CCP-Eligible program and a CCP-Approved methodology. Check the live status of both at ICVCM’s assessment-status page. The page showed 13 CCP-Eligible programs on 2026-10-13; that figure can change.
For a specific credit, verify the program name, methodology name, assessment result and dates. Program-level eligibility alone is insufficient to conclude that an individual credit carries the CCP label. If the methodology is pending, ineligible or not listed, describe the credit without implying CCP approval.

The sources establish these integrity axes but do not establish a current universal price per tonne or a reliable delivery-to-purchase ratio. Treat any quoted price as specific to the method, project, vintage, delivery risk and contract, and verify it at the time of purchase.

A practical buying workflow
- Define the intended claim. Decide whether you need a retired removal for a public statement, an internal target, a future delivery or another purpose. Write down the geography, timing and durability attributes required.
- Build a project file. Collect the project development document, methodology, monitoring plan, validation and verification reports, registry record, safeguards documents and draft contract.
- Confirm the unit. Record the method, project, standard, registry, issuance or delivery status, vintage or monitoring period, serial numbers and claim rights.
- Recalculate the net quantity. Trace gross removal, activity emissions, leakage, uncertainty deductions and any buffer contribution to the final credited amount.
- Challenge additionality. Request the counterfactual evidence and test whether regulation, existing revenue or prior financing already explains the activity.
- Stress-test durability. List reversal pathways, monitoring duration, trigger events, buffer size, replacement source and accountable party.
- Check independent assurance. Match validation and verification scope, dates and findings to the exact units offered.
- Trace and retire. Verify serial numbers and transfer history, then obtain a registry retirement confirmation naming the correct beneficiary.
- Document the claim. Keep the evidence file and use wording that describes the retired units without implying broader climate benefits than they support.
Red flags and how to respond
“Permanent” without a time period or remedy
Ask for the reservoir, monitoring period, reversal scenarios and replacement obligation. If the seller cannot identify an accountable party, pause the purchase.
Gross tonnes presented as net tonnes
Request the boundary, emissions ledger and uncertainty treatment. Do not accept a headline capture figure as the credited removal.
A label used without methodology status
Check both the program and methodology on ICVCM’s live assessment page. If only the program is eligible, remove the label from your comparison.

Ask for the reports and serial-number evidence. If documents remain unavailable, classify the offer as unverified rather than filling gaps with the seller’s summary.
Pressure to pay before units exist
Separate a forward contract from delivered credits. Negotiate milestone payments, delivery conditions, replacement rights and a clear remedy for shortfall.
Unclear community or environmental impacts
Request consultation records, safeguards assessments and grievance outcomes. Treat unresolved material harms as a reason to reject or renegotiate the offer.
Questions to put in the contract
- Which project, methodology, registry and serial-number range does the purchase cover?
- Are units issued, pending issuance or future delivery, and what happens if delivery is late or short?
- Who owns the environmental attributes and who may make the claim after retirement?
- Who pays for monitoring, registry transfers, retirement and replacement units?
- What event constitutes a reversal, who declares it and how quickly must replacement occur?
- Does the remedy cover all credited tonnes, and is the buffer or reserve independently administered?
- What disclosures are required if the methodology, registry status or safeguards finding changes?
Obtain answers in signed terms rather than relying on a presentation or sales email. Prices, supply, program status and claims guidance change, so recheck live records immediately before payment and before publishing a claim.

Make the decision
Proceed only when you can explain, in plain language, what was removed, how the net tonnes were calculated, why the activity is additional, how long storage is expected to last, what happens after a reversal, who independently checked the result, and where the retired units are recorded. If any of those answers depends on an unsupported assertion, classify the offer as unresolved and either request evidence or decline it. The most defensible purchase is not necessarily the cheapest or the one with the strongest label; it is the one whose project records, MRV, safeguards, registry trail and contract support the exact claim you plan to make.
