The best channel partner program is not the one advertising the largest discount. It is the one that leaves you with a defensible contribution margin after certification, staffing, support, financing, distributor and administrative costs—and gives you a realistic path to win protected opportunities. Evaluate a program with a written scorecard covering six areas: economics, tier attainability, deal registration, enablement, operating model, and measurable outcomes.

Request the current partner agreement, tier table, deal-registration terms, support catalog and regional addenda before relying on any headline benefit. Discounts, revenue gates, marketing-development-fund (MDF) rules, certification counts and registration protection vary by vendor, product, geography and tier.

Start with the economics, not the discount headline

A program can show a 20% discount and still be unprofitable if it requires expensive accreditations, dedicated engineers, demo equipment, minimum bookings or unpaid presales work. Model the full partner contribution for a representative deal and for the first 12 months.

List every source of partner revenue

  • Front-end margin: the discount between your acquisition cost and the vendor’s suggested or contracted price. Confirm whether the discount applies to every product, renewal, subscription term and geography.
  • Back-end rebates: payments tied to bookings, growth, product mix, certifications or tier status. Ask when a rebate is earned, when it is paid and what happens if a customer cancels.
  • MDF: co-funded campaign or event money. Establish whether funds are discretionary or formula-based, whether approval is required before spending, the reimbursement evidence required and the expiration date.
  • Referral fees: compensation for introducing an opportunity when you do not transact the order. Clarify the attribution window and whether a distributor or another partner can displace your referral.
  • Service-attach revenue: implementation, managed services, migration, security, training and ongoing support that you can legitimately sell around the vendor product.
  • Lead sharing: the expected volume, qualification standard, acceptance deadline and ownership rules for vendor-sourced leads. Treat a lead promise as pipeline potential, not booked revenue.

Subtract the costs that are easy to miss

  • Required annual or quarterly bookings, including inventory or subscription commitments that can create working-capital exposure.
  • Accreditation, sales certification, technical certification, examination fees, travel and employee time.
  • Sales, solution-architect, implementation and customer-success headcount needed to satisfy the program or deliver the solution.
  • Demo, lab, tenant, hardware and software environments, including refresh and cloud-consumption charges.
  • Priority support, partner portal subscriptions, security assessments, insurance and compliance work.
  • Distributor margin, transaction fees, financing costs, currency exposure, provisioning effort and order administration.
  • Unpaid proposal, proof-of-concept, bid-response, training and escalation time.
  • Expected returns, credits, churn and bad debt. A rebate that disappears when a customer reduces usage is not equivalent to guaranteed margin.

Use a contribution-margin worksheet

For each representative opportunity, calculate:

Contribution = front-end margin + realized rebates + approved MDF reimbursement + referral fee + service gross profit − delivery cost − presales cost − certification allocation − support cost − financing and distributor cost

Then calculate the first-year program result:

First-year result = total contribution from won deals − fixed program investment − cost of meeting tier gates

Run a base case, a downside case with slower sales and lower rebate attainment, and an upside case with realistic service attach. Keep vendor-funded MDF separate from earned margin: MDF may require preapproval, proof of performance and a delayed reimbursement, so it can improve marketing economics without solving a cash-flow gap.

Questions that expose an uneconomic offer

  • Is the stated discount calculated from list price, a regional price book or a negotiable transaction price?
  • Can the vendor change price, rebate rates or tier rules during the term, and how much notice is required?
  • Do renewals receive the same economics as new sales?
  • Are rebates paid on gross bookings, collected revenue or customer consumption?
  • Can MDF be used for your normal demand-generation activities, or only for vendor-approved campaigns?
  • What proportion of a typical deal is expected to be implementation and managed-service revenue?
  • Who owns the customer relationship and renewal when the vendor supplies the lead?

Compare tier requirements for attainability and risk

A tier is valuable only if you can reach and retain it without distorting your business. Require a written scorecard for entry, advancement, renewal, downgrade and appeal. A verbal promise from a channel manager is not a planning assumption.

What a credible scorecard contains

Area What to obtain in writing Why it matters
Revenue and bookings Minimum bookings, recognized revenue definition, measurement period, product exclusions and regional currency treatment Determines whether the target is achievable and whether a large low-margin order actually helps
Skills Sales, presales and technical certifications; exam cost; renewal cycle; substitute credentials Shows the cash and employee time required to qualify
Customer success Deployment, adoption, usage, renewal or reference requirements Prevents a sales-only plan from failing at renewal
Capacity Named staff, support coverage, business plan, demo or lab equipment and operating-hour obligations Reveals fixed costs that the discount table hides
Governance Quarterly reviews, audit rights, downgrade triggers, cure periods and termination rights Quantifies the risk of losing benefits after investing in the program

Microsoft: a capability score rather than a single revenue gate

Microsoft describes its partner capability score as a composite measure across performance, skilling and customer success. A Solutions Partner designation requires at least 70 points and more than zero in every metric. That last condition matters: a high total cannot compensate for a completely missing capability. Map each metric to a named employee, customer evidence and a deadline before you count the designation in your plan.

Arista: level-specific investment gates

Arista’s 2026 partner-program description lists Authorized, Elite and ElitePlus levels. The levels differ in bookings, business planning, accreditation, staffing and demo-equipment requirements. It lists level-dependent discounts, proposal-based MDF eligibility and rebates for Elite and ElitePlus. Arista also claims a total addressable market of more than $70 billion; treat that as the vendor’s market claim, not an independent market measurement. Ask for the current regional level matrix and the exact rebate schedule before forecasting revenue.

GitLab: an open entry path and an invitation track

GitLab describes an Open track with no revenue requirement and a Select track that is invitation-only. Its program materials list margins, referral fees, MDF and training requirements, with additional field support, strategic account-manager access, lead sharing, quarterly business reviews and priority help-desk or technical support associated with Select. An entry track with no revenue gate can reduce initial risk, but it does not guarantee leads, margin or a path to invitation; ask what evidence triggers advancement.

Calculate the real cost of tier retention

Do not model only the first qualification year. Add recurring certification renewals, quarterly business-planning work, minimum support coverage, annual demo refreshes and the opportunity cost of assigning scarce engineers. Include a downgrade scenario: if bookings fall below target, identify which discounts, MDF rights, lead priority and support entitlements disappear and how quickly they return after requalification.

Test deal registration before you depend on it

Deal registration is useful only when it creates enforceable conflict protection. Ask the vendor to demonstrate the complete workflow in the partner portal and provide the governing terms.

Inspect the submission and approval rules

  1. List every required field: customer identity, buying group, use case, estimated value, close date, products, incumbent supplier and evidence of your influence.
  2. Ask how duplicate opportunities are detected and whether an existing vendor opportunity automatically defeats your submission.
  3. Confirm the initial review service level, the person or team responsible and the status you can see in the portal.
  4. Determine when protection begins: at submission, approval or the vendor’s acceptance of a quote.
  5. Record the protection period, renewal process, expiration notice and the events that pause or restart the clock.
  6. Ask what counts as material progress—customer meeting, technical validation, proposal, purchase order or another event.
  7. Test revocation rules if progress stops, the customer changes scope or another partner claims influence.
  8. Obtain the escalation path, evidence standard and appeal deadline for a conflict.

Fortra’s published timing and dispute terms

Fortra’s 2025 deal-registration terms provide concrete benchmarks. The page states that an initial review occurs within two business days, status notification within seven business days and an approved registration remains valid for 120 days. It also says registration may be revoked after 60 days without material progress. For disputes, Fortra states: “The partner must submit a written dispute request, including a detailed description of the issue, all relevant supporting documentation, and any pertinent communications.” Use these figures as an example of the specificity to demand, not as an industry-wide standard.

Measure protection in practice

During a pilot, record submission-to-approval time, duplicate rate, percentage of registrations approved, days of actual protection, revocations, disputes and dispute-resolution time. Compare registered opportunities with unregistered opportunities by win rate and average deal size. If registration takes longer than the customer’s buying cycle, its theoretical protection may have little commercial value.

Evaluate enablement as an operating capability

Enablement should help you sell, deliver and retain customers—not merely display a library of courses. Review the partner portal yourself and ask for a schedule of live resources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sales and technical readiness

  • Map required sales accreditation to the roles that actually qualify opportunities.
  • Confirm technical certification paths, exam availability, renewal dates and whether training seats are included.
  • Request reference architectures, proposal language, pricing tools, migration guidance and competitive positioning that your team can legally use.
  • Check whether demo tenants, lab hardware or sandbox credits are included and whether they can be used for customer proofs of concept.
  • Ask how quickly a partner can reach a product specialist, escalation engineer or solution architect.

Field support and account access

Find out whether the vendor assigns a channel manager, field seller, strategic account manager or technical account resource. Define lead ownership, joint account planning, proposal assistance, roadmap briefings and quarterly business reviews. A named contact is not the same as a response commitment; request hours of coverage, severity definitions and target response times.

Support economics

Compare included support with the support you must purchase. Verify whether partner support covers your internal engineers, your end customers or both; whether severity-one incidents are handled 24/7; and whether support is available in the languages and regions where you operate. Put expected escalation hours into the contribution model rather than assuming they are free.

Choose between indirect resale and direct authorization

Your route to market must match your cash flow, billing systems, compliance controls and ability to support customers. More control can mean more liability.

Decision factor Indirect reseller Direct authorization or direct bill
Commercial flow Works through an authorized distributor that can assist with marketing, customer support and billing You sell and bill the customer directly and carry the associated collections and tax work
Operations Distributor may handle provisioning, purchasing mechanics and some administration You manage provisioning, billing, customer support and compliance autonomously
Capital and risk Usually lower operational burden, but distributor margin and dependency reduce control More control and potential economics, but greater working-capital, support and compliance exposure
Best fit Teams validating demand, lacking billing infrastructure or wanting a faster launch Organizations with mature finance, security, support and customer-success operations

Microsoft’s published direct-bill bar

Microsoft says indirect resellers can work with authorized distributors that provide tools and resources for customer relationships. Its published direct-bill requirements include at least USD 1 million in CSP trailing-12-month transactional revenue, a capabilities assessment, a managed service or customer solution, a Solutions Partner designation, security-score requirements and an advanced or premier partner-support plan. The page was updated May 18, 2026. Treat those requirements as Microsoft-specific eligibility rules, not a universal threshold for direct authorization.

Questions for the distributor route

  • Who owns the customer contract, renewal notice and service-level commitment?
  • How quickly can the distributor quote, provision, suspend and restore service?
  • What happens if the distributor’s credit limit, geography or product authorization changes?
  • Can you retain the customer relationship and service revenue if you later move to direct authorization?
  • Which data, security and tax responsibilities remain with you?

Questions before going direct

  • Can your finance team manage recurring billing, collections, credits, tax and foreign exchange?
  • Do you have documented support, incident response, security controls and customer escalation coverage?
  • Can you fund inventory, cloud consumption or receivables through a slow payment cycle?
  • Will the extra margin exceed the distributor fees and additional headcount required?

Set a 90- to 180-day pilot dashboard

Do not make a multi-year commitment from a brochure. Start with a defined pilot, a small group of sellers and a measurable customer segment. Establish baseline values before the first registration.

Metric Definition Decision use
Registration approval time Median and 90th-percentile business days from submission to approval Shows whether protection arrives before the buying decision
Conflict-resolution time Days from written dispute to final decision Measures the practical value of escalation rights
Registered-to-won conversion Closed/won registered opportunities divided by registrations with a known outcome Tests opportunity quality and seller execution
Average deal size Booked or collected value, defined consistently Reveals whether the program improves deal quality
MDF approval and utilization Approved amount, reimbursed amount and days to payment Separates available funds from usable cash
Training completion Required certifications completed on time by role Identifies qualification bottlenecks
Support response First response and resolution time by severity Shows delivery risk and escalation burden
Partner-sourced pipeline Qualified pipeline created by your team, with attribution rules documented Measures whether the program creates demand rather than just discounts
Customer adoption and renewal Usage, deployment milestones and renewal status Tests the quality and durability of revenue
Partner satisfaction Structured survey by role, tier and region Flags recurring friction that financial data may miss

Salesforce recommends tracking registration volume and approval time, conflict-resolution time, partner satisfaction, registered-to-closed/won conversion and average deal size. Microsoft’s capability score adds measures such as net customer adds, certifications, usage growth and deployments. Select metrics that match your business model, publish an owner and review them monthly during the pilot.

Build a weighted decision scorecard

Use weights that reflect your strategy instead of letting a single attractive benefit dominate. A services-led integrator may weight service attach, technical enablement and adoption more heavily than front-end margin; a high-volume reseller may weight transaction speed, distributor economics and renewal automation.

Category Evidence to score Suggested rating question
Economics Margin, rebates, MDF, referral fees, service attach and total cost Does the downside case still meet our contribution target?
Attainability Bookings, skills, staffing, equipment, renewal and downgrade rules Can we qualify with current capacity without buying unneeded volume?
Protection Registration workflow, exclusivity, validity, duplicates and disputes Can we prove and defend influence before investing presales time?
Enablement Training, demos, technical support, roadmap and field help Will this reduce our delivery risk and sales cycle?
Operating fit Billing, provisioning, support, security, compliance and distributor dependence Can our systems and people perform every obligation?
Outcomes Pipeline, conversion, deal size, adoption, renewal and satisfaction Is there evidence the program produces durable customer value?

Score each category using documented evidence, mark unknown items as unresolved rather than average, and set a minimum score for approval. Add a separate red-flag gate for uncapped liability, unilateral rule changes, ambiguous customer ownership, unprotected renewals or requirements that cannot be audited.

Common failure modes and how to correct them

Chasing a tier that requires uneconomic volume

Symptom: The team buys or books low-margin business solely to reach a threshold. Correction: Recalculate the tier using contribution after delivery, financing and support costs. Model the next tier only if the incremental benefits exceed the incremental obligations.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

Treating MDF as guaranteed revenue

Symptom: The budget assumes every requested dollar will be reimbursed. Correction: Track approval rate, eligible activities, evidence requirements and payment delay; fund the campaign from your own cash until reimbursement is received.

Registering every lead without an influence plan

Symptom: Registrations expire or are revoked because sellers cannot show progress. Correction: Require a next customer action, owner and date at submission, then review aging weekly.

Ignoring duplicate-opportunity rules

Symptom: A vendor rejects a valid opportunity because an internal record or another partner appeared first. Correction: Ask how duplicates are defined, retain dated evidence of influence and escalate before spending on a proof of concept.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Underestimating certification and staffing costs

Symptom: The program is technically qualified but sales or support capacity is missing. Correction: Assign every requirement to a person, include back-up coverage and budget renewal time, not just the exam fee.

Going direct before operations are ready

Symptom: Higher theoretical margin is offset by billing errors, slow support and cash-flow pressure. Correction: Validate recurring billing, collections, security, incident response and customer-success processes through an indirect pilot first.

Confusing vendor market claims with attainable demand

Symptom: A large total-addressable-market figure becomes a sales forecast. Correction: Replace it with your serviceable segment, named accounts, conversion assumptions and measured pilot pipeline.

Documents to request before signing

  1. Current partner agreement and all regional, product and program addenda.
  2. Tier scorecard with entry, advancement, renewal, downgrade, cure and termination rules.
  3. Discount, rebate, referral and renewal schedules, including payment timing and clawbacks.
  4. MDF policy, eligible activities, approval workflow, reimbursement evidence and expiration rules.
  5. Deal-registration policy with required fields, duplicate handling, validity, revocation and dispute escalation.
  6. Certification catalog, accreditation fees, renewal periods and staffing requirements.
  7. Support catalog with severity definitions, hours, response targets and escalation contacts.
  8. Distributor agreement or direct-bill obligations covering billing, tax, data, security and customer ownership.
  9. Lead-sharing policy, attribution rules and service-level expectations.
  10. Data-export and exit terms covering customer records, registrations, renewals and open opportunities.

Make the go-or-no-go decision

Approve the program when the downside economics remain positive, requirements are attainable with named resources, registration provides protection before material presales spend, enablement reduces delivery risk and your operating model can meet billing and support obligations. Negotiate or decline when critical terms are discretionary, customer ownership is unclear, tier retention depends on unprofitable volume, or the vendor cannot provide measurable service levels.

Record the assumptions behind the decision, assign owners for each open item and schedule a 90-day review followed by a 180-day renewal decision. The result should be a partner business case that can survive a missed quarter—not a discount comparison that works only in the vendor’s best-case scenario.
