Evaluate an AI-powered managed detection and response (MDR) service by checking what it can see, how it investigates alerts, who can act during an incident, how it uses AI, and how it handles your data. Ask every provider the same questions, get answers and responsibilities in writing, and test the proposed workflow with realistic incident scenarios. A polished dashboard or an “AI-powered” label is not evidence of effective coverage or response.

What should you evaluate first?

Start with the operating service, not its AI claims. An MDR provider can only identify activity represented in the data it receives, and a detection is useful only if someone investigates it and the right people can respond. Before comparing providers, establish the environments you need covered, the decisions the provider may make, and the evidence you expect to receive.

CISA’s logging guidance recommends enabling logs across servers, firewalls, endpoint devices, and cloud services. It identifies records such as user activity, administrator actions, network traffic, application logins, and system events as useful for detecting unusual activity. CISA puts the practical point plainly: “Logs that go unanalyzed are useless.” CISA’s business logging guidance is a useful baseline, but it does not certify an MDR service or establish a universal provider standard.

Use the evaluation to answer five questions: What is monitored? How does an alert become an investigated incident? Who is authorized to take action? What role does AI play, and how is it governed? What happens to your data and the service relationship over time?

How do you establish real coverage?

Ask for a written service boundary that describes what is protected, what is excluded, and what your team must configure or maintain. A list of integrations is not enough: determine which data each integration supplies, whether it is actually enabled in your environment, and how the provider identifies missing or degraded telemetry.

Map the environments and telemetry

Inventory the business units, locations, systems, and accounts in scope. For each one, record whether the provider receives relevant signals from endpoints, identities, email, cloud services, networks, and applications. The precise combination depends on your environment; do not assume that connecting one product or data source gives the provider visibility into everything around it.

Ask the provider to show a sample asset inventory and a sample normalized event record. The inventory should let you find assets that are included, excluded, not yet onboarded, or no longer reporting. The event example should make clear what source produced the record, what context was added, and whether the provider can trace an investigation back to the underlying evidence.

  • Which devices, users, business units, cloud accounts, and locations are in scope?
  • Which log sources are required, optional, or unsupported? What events does each source provide?
  • Who handles onboarding, configuration, integration failures, and changes to the environment?
  • How are coverage gaps, stale connections, and assets that stop reporting surfaced to your team?
  • What are the monitoring hours, and what work is covered outside those hours?

Do not treat “integrated” as synonymous with “covered.” Ask for dependencies, prerequisites, exclusions, and the process for resolving missing data. If a critical system is outside the service boundary, decide whether another control or internal process will monitor it.

Check log handling and usefulness

Coverage depends on logs being available and usable. Ask who reviews them, what the provider does when a source stops sending data, and whether your team can access relevant event records during an investigation. CISA recommends centralized logging as a way to help identify unusual activity; its guidance is a starting point for deciding which systems should produce records, not a promise that every log source is automatically included in a particular service.

How can you assess detection and investigation?

Request a walkthrough that starts with an actual example signal and ends with a resolved case. The provider should explain what analysts see, what context they add, how they distinguish benign activity from suspicious activity, how uncertainty is communicated, and what evidence is delivered to you. Ask how threat hunts are initiated and how your staff can correct information or challenge a finding.

A detection description alone leaves important questions unanswered. Establish how the service triages an alert, enriches it with context, investigates it, escalates it, communicates with your team, and closes the case. Ask what happens when evidence is incomplete or contradictory; a useful process should show how uncertainty affects escalation and proposed action rather than presenting every alert as equally conclusive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Request meaningful measures

If the provider presents performance measures, ask for the definition, denominator, time window, exclusions, and data sources behind each one. Find out which cases or customers are represented and whether the measure describes provider activity, customer notification, or completed remediation. Compare a metric across providers only when the definitions and populations match.

The CISA and NIST materials cited here do not establish universal MDR response-time targets or provide vendor performance statistics. A headline response figure without its definition and conditions is not a sound basis for ranking providers. Ask each candidate to explain its own measures and how they relate to the service you would receive.

Who can take action during an incident?

Put the response model in writing. For every severity category, map the contact method, escalation path, customer decision-maker, expected updates, evidence delivered, and criteria for closing the case. Then distinguish recommendations from actions the provider can take without approval.

Define authority before an emergency

Specify which containment or remediation actions are advisory, which are pre-authorized, and which require your approval. For actions that could disrupt operations, clarify the approval path and what happens if the designated contact is unavailable. Define any emergency authority explicitly, including how the provider records and explains an action taken under it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Depending on the service and environment, actions to discuss might include isolating an endpoint, disabling an account, or changing a security control. These are examples to clarify in your own agreement, not a claim that every provider can or should perform them. Identify who owns remediation when the provider reports a problem but does not have authority or access to fix it.

Plan communication and recovery

Agree on who receives an escalation, how the provider reaches them, and what backup contacts apply. Ask what the provider will communicate during an active investigation, what evidence it will preserve or deliver, and how the case record captures decisions and actions. Confirm how the provider coordinates with your incident-response and recovery plans.

CISA recommends that MSP customers develop and exercise incident-response and recovery plans that include organizational stakeholders and roles. Its advisory for managed service providers and their customers is a broad MSP/customer security baseline, not an MDR-specific approval model. Use it to prompt role and exercise discussions, then negotiate the procedures appropriate to your organization.

What does “AI-powered” actually mean?

Treat “AI-powered” as a collection of specific claims to verify, not as a single technical capability or quality rating. Ask the provider to separate deterministic rules, statistical or machine-learning detection, and generative-AI features. A provider may use different approaches for different tasks, so request a task-by-task explanation rather than accepting one label for the entire service.

Ask what AI does and what data it uses

For each AI-assisted step, ask what the system is intended to do, what data it receives, what output it produces, and how that output enters the analyst or response workflow. Clarify whether AI is used to identify or prioritize signals, summarize cases, recommend actions, or perform another function. Ask whether any output can trigger an action automatically, and who is responsible for reviewing it.

  • What evaluation data and operating conditions support the provider’s claims?
  • How does the provider review false positives and missed detections?
  • When does a human review, correct, or override an AI-generated output?
  • How are model or system changes controlled, communicated, and monitored for drift?
  • How can your team challenge an output, report an error, or request an explanation?
  • Can your data be used to train models or improve services, and what choices or restrictions apply?

Ask for documented evidence appropriate to the claim. A general assurance about accuracy does not tell you how performance was evaluated, which conditions were covered, or how limitations are handled in your environment.

Use NIST guidance as a framework, not a badge

NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework is voluntary guidance intended to support risk management across AI design, development, use, and evaluation. Its trustworthiness dimensions include reliability, safety, security, accountability, transparency, explainability, privacy, and fairness. It is not a certification of an MDR provider or proof that a service meets your requirements. Ask how a provider’s documented practices address the dimensions relevant to its use of AI; NIST’s AI RMF FAQs provide additional context.

If the service uses generative AI, ask specifically about data privacy, information security, human-AI configuration, and third-party integration. NIST’s AI 600-1 Generative AI Profile discusses these kinds of risk areas. It does not establish that a particular MDR service uses generative AI, nor does it supply an MDR contract template.

What happens to your logs and case data?

Request a clear account of what telemetry and case data the provider collects, where it is stored and processed, who can access it, and how access is controlled and audited. Confirm the retention period and what happens to data when the service ends, including how export or deletion works and what evidence you receive.

Ask whether subcontractors handle any data or service functions, whether data crosses borders, and whether customer data may be used for model training or service improvement. These are questions for the provider and contract; the official guidance cited here does not determine any individual provider’s practices. CISA advises securing log storage and retaining logs according to policy and compliance needs. NIST’s AI risk materials include privacy and information security among the issues to manage.

  • Identify data categories collected, storage and processing locations, and retention periods.

How should the contract define the service?

Translate the operating model into contract and service documentation. The written terms should make service boundaries, customer and provider responsibilities, escalation contacts, notification obligations, evidence delivery, access protections, data handling, subcontracting, and change notification clear. Include support availability and continuity arrangements, as well as termination and transition assistance.

Where the provider offers service measures, document their definitions and the conditions under which they apply. Avoid vague commitments that leave unclear when a clock starts, what event counts as a response, or which cases are excluded. Confirm how changes to integrations, AI features, or operating procedures will be communicated and what notice or approval applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NIST AI 600-1 identifies responsibilities, notification for serious incidents involving third-party data and systems, and service-level agreements covering incident response, response times, and availability of critical support as considerations in generative-AI third-party contexts. Use these as contract-review prompts where relevant, not as legal requirements or evidence that a provider meets them. Have the appropriate legal, privacy, security, and procurement stakeholders review the terms.

How can you compare providers consistently?

Give each candidate the same scope, assumptions, questions, and evaluation criteria. Record answers in a common format and distinguish what is documented from what is only described verbally. The table below provides a comparison structure; it does not imply that any candidate meets a criterion until you verify the evidence.

Evaluation area What to compare Evidence to request
Coverage Included assets and telemetry, exclusions, onboarding requirements, monitoring hours, and visibility into gaps Written service boundary, integration dependencies, sample inventory, sample event record
Operations Analyst workflow, investigation, threat hunting, escalation, communication, and case evidence End-to-end case walkthrough, sample case report, definitions for provider measures
Response authority Actions the provider may take, approvals, emergency handling, and action records Written authority matrix, escalation path, incident and recovery procedures
AI governance Declared use cases, evaluation evidence, human review, limitations, change monitoring, and data use AI-use documentation, evaluation and change-control descriptions, human oversight process
Data protection Access controls, storage and processing locations, retention, subcontractors, export, deletion, and training use Data-handling terms, retention and deletion details, access and audit descriptions
Contractual fit Roles, defined service measures, incident notification, support, continuity, and exit Service and contract terms, contact and notification procedures, transition provisions

Do not rank candidates by marketing language or compare headline response metrics without their definitions, populations, and time windows. The official sources cited in this guide do not provide named-provider comparisons, product testing, pricing evidence, or verified MDR-specific benchmarks.

How do you validate the service before signing?

Run the same tabletop scenarios with each finalist. The exercise tests whether the promised service can work with your data, roles, and decision paths; it is a buyer-led validation, not a substitute for provider performance evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose realistic scenarios. Use situations relevant to your environment, such as a compromised administrator account, suspicious endpoint behavior, cloud identity misuse, or suspected ransomware.
  2. State the available context. Identify the systems, log sources, contacts, and operating constraints the provider would have at the start. Ask what additional telemetry it would need.
  3. Walk from signal to decision. Ask what the service would detect or investigate, how an analyst would assess the evidence, how uncertainty would be communicated, and what would trigger escalation.
  4. Test authority and communication. Ask who contacts your team, who approves action, what the provider may do if a contact is unavailable, and how the action and rationale are recorded.
  5. Inspect the outcome. Request the evidence and case information your team would receive, how remediation ownership is assigned, and how the incident would be closed and incorporated into recovery.
  6. Record gaps and follow up. Note missing data, unclear handoffs, unsupported actions, and unanswered contract questions. Resolve material gaps before treating the service as ready.

This exercise is consistent with the practical value of CISA’s recommendation to develop and exercise response and recovery plans. It does not produce a universal score or prove that a provider will achieve a particular outcome in a live incident.

What are common evaluation mistakes?

  • Buying the label: “AI-powered” does not specify a use case, level of oversight, or evidence of performance. Request details for each AI-assisted task.
  • Confusing integrations with visibility: An integration may provide only some of the data you need. Verify enabled sources, event types, coverage gaps, and onboarding dependencies.
  • Assuming an alert equals a response: Confirm investigation, escalation, communication, authority, remediation ownership, and closure evidence.
  • Leaving emergency authority implicit: Agree in advance which actions need approval and what the provider may do when your contacts cannot be reached.
  • Comparing undefined metrics: A response figure is not comparable unless the event, clock, population, exclusions, and time window are aligned.
  • Assuming a framework is certification: NIST AI RMF is voluntary guidance, not a vendor approval or guarantee of service quality.
  • Ignoring data exit: Agree how data is retained, exported, and deleted and what transition support applies when the relationship ends.
