A five-year return is useful only when you define exactly what was measured. Set matching start and end dates, calculate both cumulative and annualized results, decide whether dividends were included and reinvested, and compare the stock with a relevant benchmark on the same basis. Then read the result alongside fees, taxes, volatility, and the company’s filings. The number describes one historical interval; it is not a forecast.
What a five-year return actually measures
A five-year return answers a narrow historical question: how much would a specified investment have changed between two dates? It does not explain whether the company is profitable today, whether its valuation is reasonable, or what the next five years will look like.
Use two labels for the result:
- Cumulative holding-period return: the total percentage change across the interval.
- Annualized compound return: the constant yearly rate that would produce the same ending value if gains compounded for five years.
Those percentages answer different questions. A 50% cumulative gain is not a 50% annual return. The annualized figure is usually better for comparing investments held for different lengths of time, while the cumulative figure shows the actual change over the selected period.

Choose dates before looking at the percentage
Use an explicit five-year window
Write down the beginning date and ending date before collecting prices. “Five years” can mean exactly five years ending on a stated date, or five completed calendar years. Those choices can produce different results because a stock’s price may move sharply around year-end.
- Choose the start date, such as 13 October 2021.
- Choose the end date, such as 13 October 2026, or the latest trading day available if the anniversary falls on a weekend or market holiday.
- Use the same dates for the stock and every benchmark.
- Record whether prices are closing prices, adjusted prices, or another clearly defined series.
If the market was closed on a chosen date, state which trading day you substituted. Do not silently use one date for the stock and another for the index.
Keep the currency and security consistent
Compare values in the same currency and for the same share class. A price quoted in U.S. dollars should not be compared directly with a foreign-currency return unless the currency conversion method is disclosed. If a company has multiple share classes, identify which one you measured.
Calculate the cumulative price return
For a one-time investment with no additions or withdrawals, the price-only holding-period return is:
(ending share price − beginning share price) ÷ beginning share price
Multiply the result by 100 to express it as a percentage. A share that rose from $50 to $75 has:
($75 − $50) ÷ $50 = 0.50 = 50%
This is a hypothetical arithmetic illustration, not a current stock result or a market statistic. It excludes dividends, trading costs, taxes, and the effect of buying fractional shares.
Convert the result to an annualized compound rate
To express the same five-year change as a compound annual growth rate (CAGR), use:

(ending value ÷ beginning value)^(1 ÷ 5) − 1
For the $50-to-$75 illustration:
($75 ÷ $50)^(1 ÷ 5) − 1 ≈ 8.45% per year
The 8.45% figure is a mathematical equivalent, not a claim that the stock earned 8.45% in every year. Actual annual results could include large gains, losses, and flat periods. CAGR smooths that path into one rate.
| Measure | What it tells you | What it leaves out |
|---|---|---|
| Cumulative price return | Total change in the share price over the selected dates | Dividends, fees, taxes, and the path between endpoints |
| Five-year CAGR | Constant annual compounding rate equivalent to the endpoint change | Year-to-year volatility, drawdowns, dividends unless included in the values |
| Total return | Price change plus distributions under a stated reinvestment assumption | Your personal taxes and account-specific costs unless separately modeled |
Decide whether dividends are included
Price return is not total return
Price return measures only the change in the quoted share price. Total return adds dividends and other distributions. Investor.gov explains that investment return can come from appreciation in an asset’s value or from dividend and interest payments. A stock that stayed at the same price while paying dividends could have a positive total return but a zero price return.
When reporting a result, label it explicitly as one of the following:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Price return: uses unadjusted beginning and ending prices and excludes distributions.
- Total return with reinvestment: assumes each dividend is reinvested according to the stated method.
- Total return without reinvestment: counts cash distributions but leaves them outside the share position.
The SEC advises investors to check how a performance calculation treats dividends. An “adjusted close” series may incorporate distributions, but the data provider’s adjustment convention still needs to be verified. Do not call an adjusted-price result price-only unless you know that distributions were excluded.
State the reinvestment assumption
Reinvesting dividends buys additional shares, so later dividends may be earned on those additional shares. Cash dividends that are not reinvested produce a different ending value. For a fair comparison, use the same reinvestment assumption for the stock and the benchmark.
Match the calculation to your own cash flows
The start/end formulas assume one initial investment and no money moving in or out. If you made regular purchases, sold part of the position, or withdrew dividends, those formulas describe the security’s interval—not your account’s personal return.
For a personal account with multiple cash flows, use a money-weighted measure such as an internal rate of return (IRR), with each deposit or withdrawal dated. A large contribution shortly before a rally can make your account’s return differ substantially from the stock’s time-period return. Keep the security’s performance and your investor experience as two separate measurements.
Compare the stock with a relevant benchmark
Apply the “apples to apples” test
The SEC Office of Investor Education and Advocacy says, “The choice of an appropriate benchmark is important in evaluating performance because it is important to compare apples to apples.” A benchmark should represent a similar market segment, geography, company size, and investment type. A broad U.S. equity index may be a poor comparator for a small international company or a specialized sector.

Use a written comparison specification:
| Comparison item | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Dates | Identical start and end dates, with trading-day substitutions disclosed |
| Return definition | Price return compared with price return, or total return compared with total return |
| Dividends | Both series either exclude distributions or use the same reinvestment assumption |
| Currency | Same reporting currency or a disclosed conversion method |
| Market exposure | Benchmark reflects the stock’s segment and type of risk |
| Costs | Published index results and investor net results are identified separately |
Interpret the gap, not just the rank
If a stock returned 40% and a relevant benchmark returned 30% over the same basis, the stock outperformed by 10 percentage points cumulatively. That does not prove skill or future superiority. The difference may reflect greater risk, concentration, a temporary industry cycle, or a single event.
Compare both cumulative and annualized figures. A stock can have a larger cumulative gain simply because it was measured over a longer period; CAGR removes that duration effect when intervals differ. For a strict five-year comparison, identical dates remain preferable.
Account for fees, sales charges, and taxes
A published market or index return is not automatically your net return. Buying and selling stocks, maintaining an account, or reinvesting dividends can involve fees. Subtract applicable costs from the cash flows or ending value and describe what you included.
Taxes depend on the investor, account type, holding period, jurisdiction, and treatment of dividends or capital gains. There is no universal after-tax five-year return. State assumptions such as “before individual taxes” or model the investor’s actual tax rates separately.
Investor.gov’s shareholder-report guide shows how mutual funds and exchange-traded funds may present average annual total returns over one, five, and ten years, with and without sales charges, alongside an appropriate broad-based index. Those are fund-report examples, not a universal presentation requirement for individual stocks. Use the same discipline—identifying charges and tax assumptions—without implying that every stock has a standardized shareholder-report table.
Examine the path: volatility and drawdowns
Two stocks can have the same five-year CAGR while exposing an investor to very different interim losses. A single endpoint number hides the path. When data is available, inspect annual or quarterly returns and identify the largest peak-to-trough decline.
- Volatility: how widely periodic returns vary around their average.
- Drawdown: the percentage fall from a previous high to a subsequent low before recovery.
- Recovery time: how long it took to regain the prior peak, if it did.
Investor.gov notes that performance graphs can help readers compare how smooth or volatile an investment’s path was relative to its index. A high return accompanied by a deep drawdown may be unsuitable for an investor who cannot tolerate a similar loss in the future.

Investor.gov says most public companies file quarterly and annual reports, and annual reports contain independently audited financial statements. Use those reports to investigate:
- Revenue, earnings, cash flow, debt, and changes in share count.
- Management’s discussion of business conditions, risks, and material events.
- Whether the five-year period included an acquisition, restructuring, commodity cycle, regulatory change, or other unusual event.
- How much of the return came from improving business results versus a change in the valuation investors assigned to those results.
- Whether current guidance and competitive conditions differ from the conditions that produced the historical return.
Do not infer business quality from a rising chart alone. A stock can rise while fundamentals deteriorate, and a falling stock can reflect a temporary shock or a lasting impairment.
Put the five-year result in market context
The dates selected can coincide with unusual economic or market conditions. Examine whether the interval includes a recession, rapid interest-rate changes, a commodity-price shock, a crisis, or an industry boom. An unusually strong selected window deserves a check for cherry-picking: would a nearby five-year window tell a materially different story?
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBack-tested returns require extra caution. A back-test is hypothetical and does not represent actual investor performance. It can be affected by assumptions about survivorship, trading dates, rebalancing, fees, taxes, and data availability.
Investor.gov’s introductory material notes that some experts use 7–10% as a long-term estimate for diversified investments in U.S. stocks, based on historical averages. That estimate is not a typical single-stock five-year result and is not a forecast for any individual security.
A repeatable five-year evaluation workflow
- Define the question. Decide whether you need the stock’s price return, total return, or your own account’s money-weighted return.
- Lock the dates. Record the exact start and end trading dates and any substitutions for market holidays.
- Collect consistent data. Obtain beginning and ending prices, and distribution information if calculating total return. Record the currency and share class.
- Calculate cumulative return. Apply the start/end formula and label whether it is price-only or distribution-inclusive.
- Calculate CAGR. Apply the five-year exponent to the same beginning and ending values.
- Model dividends. State whether distributions were paid in cash or reinvested and use the same treatment for comparisons.
- Choose a benchmark. Select a comparator that matches the stock’s market exposure and calculate it over the identical dates and return definition.
- Adjust for investor costs. Add known commissions, account charges, reinvestment fees, sales charges, and stated tax assumptions.
- Inspect the path. Review annual or quarterly returns, volatility, maximum drawdown, and recovery time.
- Read filings and risks. Use quarterly and annual reports to test whether the historical drivers still apply.
- Document limitations. Save the data source, date, formulas, assumptions, and any missing information so another person can reproduce the result.

How to decide whether the result deserves further work
A five-year result is a screening input, not an automatic buy or sell signal. Continue your analysis when:
- The stock beat its relevant benchmark on a comparable total-return basis, but the outperformance came with substantially larger drawdowns.
- Most of the gain occurred in a short burst or around one event.
- The result changes materially when dividends, fees, or currency effects are included.
- The company’s latest filings show leverage, declining cash flow, dilution, litigation, or competitive risks that were not visible in the historical chart.
- The selected dates produce an unusually favorable result compared with nearby five-year windows.
Consider the result more informative when the dates, data definitions, benchmark, costs, and business context are all explicit and the conclusion remains similar under reasonable alternative assumptions. Even then, the evidence supports a better-informed decision process—not a guarantee.
What to record in your investment notes
| Field | Example entry |
|---|---|
| Security and share class | Company name, ticker, and class measured |
| Start and end dates | Exact trading dates, with holiday substitutions noted |
| Beginning and ending values | Prices or total-return values, currency identified |
| Return type | Price-only, total return with reinvestment, or total return without reinvestment |
| Cumulative return | Formula and resulting percentage |
| Annualized return | Five-year CAGR formula and result |
| Benchmark | Index or comparator, with matching methodology |
| Costs and taxes | Included charges and stated tax basis |
| Path statistics | Annual returns, volatility, maximum drawdown, and recovery time when available |
| Business context | Relevant quarterly and annual filing findings |
The practical takeaway
Start with a reproducible calculation, but do not stop at the percentage. A credible five-year evaluation identifies the dates, separates cumulative from annualized performance, includes or excludes dividends deliberately, compares the stock with a fitting benchmark, and discloses fees and taxes. Reviewing volatility, drawdowns, market conditions, and public-company filings turns a historical return into useful context while preserving its limits. The final decision should also reflect your objectives and risk tolerance; no five-year chart can make that decision for you.
