Use the pitch as a structured first look, not as proof that the company is investable. Test the founders’ claims about the problem, product, customers, traction, market, competition, business model, team, and funding plan; label each point as evidenced, asserted, or still unknown; then verify the important claims with company-specific documents, customer references, product access, and financing terms.

What a TechCrunch Disrupt pitch can—and cannot—tell you

A polished presentation reveals how clearly founders understand their customer, product, market, and plan. A live demonstration can show that a feature worked at that moment. It does not, by itself, establish retention, market size, financial performance, legal status, intellectual-property ownership, customer references, or the terms of a possible investment.

TechCrunch’s Startup Battlefield guidance describes the qualities it seeks in ambitious early-stage companies: differentiated products, meaningful problems, potential to reshape an industry or create a category, early traction, thoughtful execution, market understanding, relevant founder experience, and support from advisers, investors, or other supporters. Those are TechCrunch’s program criteria, not a universal formula for startup success. Selection for a stage, event, or program is therefore a reason to investigate further, not independent validation of every claim.

The current Startup Battlefield page, accessed in 2026, describes up to four application-review rounds, 200 participating companies, and a $100,000 equity-free prize. These are program details for the relevant edition and can change; do not treat them as evidence about any individual company’s quality.

Start with a claim ledger

Within a few hours of the pitch, write down what you actually heard. Separate the founder’s words from your interpretation and from facts you can verify. A simple three-column ledger keeps enthusiasm from turning into an accidental investment thesis.

Label What it means How to handle it
Evidenced A claim is supported by a specific artifact or independently checkable observation. Record the artifact, date, scope, and limitations. Examples include a product you can use, a contract, a cohort report, or a customer reference.
Asserted The founder stated the claim, but you have not checked it. Convert it into a follow-up question. Do not use it as a verified metric.
Unknown The pitch did not provide enough information to judge the point. Decide whether the uncertainty is acceptable for the company’s stage and whether it must be resolved before proceeding.

Capture the exact metric and denominator rather than writing “strong traction” or “huge market.” Note the customer segment, measurement period, geography, product version, and whether a figure is recurring, cumulative, contracted, or merely projected.

1. Test the problem and customer

Identify the buyer, user, and urgent job

Ask the founders to name the person or organization that experiences the problem, the person who uses the product, and the person who approves payment. These may be different. A consumer app, for example, can have one user and one payer; an enterprise product can involve an end user, department owner, security reviewer, procurement team, and executive sponsor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask what the customer does today. The current solution may be a competitor, an internal tool, a spreadsheet, an agency, a manual process, or simply doing nothing. “No software exists” is not the same as “no alternative exists.”

Measure severity and frequency

A problem statement becomes investable only when the consequences are concrete. Ask how often the problem occurs, what it costs in money, time, risk, lost revenue, or missed opportunity, and who owns the consequence. A problem that is interesting but infrequent may not support repeat purchasing. A frequent problem with a clear budget owner gives you a stronger starting hypothesis.

  • Which customer interviews, usage records, or incident logs demonstrate the problem?
  • What event causes a customer to seek a solution now rather than later?
  • How much does the current workaround cost, including staff time and operational risk?
  • What evidence shows that the stated customer segment, rather than a much narrower niche, has the problem?

Demand direct customer evidence

Ask to speak with customers or prospects, subject to confidentiality. Look for behavior: repeated use, paid renewals, expansion, referrals, signed commitments, or a budget already assigned to the problem. Positive comments from a demo audience are useful feedback but are not equivalent to purchasing behavior.

2. Verify the product and differentiation

Distinguish a working product from a staged demo

TechCrunch’s Battlefield application guidance calls for a functional minimum viable product and a demonstration showing the product in action. After the event, ask for access to the same core workflow without the stage conditions. Confirm which parts are live, which are prototypes, which rely on manual work by the team, and which are planned.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Request a product walkthrough using a representative customer scenario.
  2. Ask what data, integrations, permissions, or human intervention the workflow requires.
  3. Repeat the critical action yourself or observe a customer doing it.
  4. Record the product version and the limitations disclosed during the demonstration.

Define what is materially different

“AI-powered,” “faster,” or “one platform” describes a category, not necessarily a durable advantage. Ask what changes for the customer compared with the best existing option: lower total cost, a workflow competitors cannot deliver, a distribution advantage, proprietary data, a regulatory approval, a network effect, or a substantially better outcome.

Then ask why a customer would switch. Switching can require migration, training, integration work, procurement approval, or regulatory review. A technically impressive feature may still lose if adoption costs exceed the customer’s expected benefit.

3. Examine the market without accepting a headline number

Rebuild the market from the starting segment

Ask the founders to show how the opportunity was built. A credible market case connects a defined customer population to a realistic price, purchase frequency, and reachable geography. Distinguish total addressable market from the initial segment the company can serve with its present product, team, channel, and regulation.

Large industry reports can provide context, but they do not prove that this startup can capture the market. Challenge every leap from “the sector is worth billions” to “we can become a large company.” Ask which portion is software spend, which customers have the relevant problem, and what must be true for the company to reach them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match ambition to reachable growth

TechCrunch looks for companies with the potential to reshape an industry or create a category. That ambition is compatible with a narrow initial wedge, provided the founders explain how the wedge expands. Look for a sequence: first customer type, repeatable use case, adjacent segment, and the capability required at each step.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

4. Assess founder-market fit and the team’s gaps

Look for relevant insight, not impressive biographies

TechCrunch says it examines founders’ experience, insight into the problem, and why they are uniquely positioned to build the company. Ask what the team learned through direct work with the customer, what non-obvious constraint it understands, and which decisions were changed by that insight.

Prior employment at a prominent company is not proof of execution in this market. Conversely, a first-time founder may have unusually strong customer access or technical insight. Judge the connection between the team’s experience and the company’s specific risk.

List capabilities the company still needs

Early teams rarely have every skill. Write down the critical gaps: enterprise sales, compliance, hardware operations, security, machine-learning infrastructure, finance, or international distribution. Ask when each capability must be added, what it will cost, and whether the current founders can recruit and manage it.

5. Read traction correctly

Separate unlike metrics

TechCrunch’s pitch-deck guidance treats traction as a high-priority area and asks whether metrics show real success or vanity. Do not place usage, pilots, retention, revenue, and signed commitments in one undifferentiated “traction” bucket.

Metric type Questions to ask
Usage How many active users or accounts, over what period, and with what frequency? Are they target customers or free testers?
Pilots Is the pilot paid, who approved it, what success criteria were agreed, and how many converted?
Retention Which cohort is measured, after what interval, and how is churn defined?
Revenue Is it recurring or one-time, booked or collected, gross or net, and concentrated in a few customers?
Signed commitments What obligations, conditions, start dates, and cancellation rights do the agreements contain?

Check the baseline and trend

Request a time series rather than a single impressive total. A cumulative user count can rise while current activity falls. A large contract can conceal a long implementation period or low gross margin. Ask for cohort behavior, conversion rates, sales-cycle length, expansion, churn, and the customer concentration behind the headline.

6. Map competition and alternatives

TechCrunch explicitly warns that saying a company has no competitors is a red flag. A serious competitive analysis includes direct products, adjacent vendors, internal tools, manual labor, consultants, and the customer’s option to delay or do nothing.

Test the comparison on customer buying criteria

Ask which alternative wins today, why customers choose it, and what evidence shows the startup can displace it. Compare implementation time, reliability, price, compliance, integrations, support, and outcomes—not just feature counts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for a defensible path

Early differentiation can be narrow. The question is whether the advantage strengthens with execution. Possible mechanisms include proprietary data generated by use, workflow integration that becomes difficult to replace, distribution access, specialized expertise, or cost improvements that scale. Treat a patent filing, partnership announcement, or claimed network effect as a claim to verify, not as proof of defensibility.

7. Evaluate the business model and go-to-market plan

Follow the money

Ask who pays, what they pay for, how pricing is set, and when cash is collected. Clarify whether the model is subscription, usage-based, transaction-based, licensing, services, hardware, or a combination. Services revenue can help a company learn but may scale differently from software revenue.

Interrogate acquisition assumptions

TechCrunch’s deck checklist places pricing, acquisition cost, sales cycle, and repeat use among the important business-model questions. Ask how the company found its current customers and whether that channel can be repeated. Separate an acquisition cost observed from a forecast based on industry averages.

  • What is the sales cycle by customer segment?
  • Who owns the buying decision and what approvals are required?
  • What percentage of trials or pilots become paid accounts?
  • How often do customers renew, expand, or purchase again?
  • What gross margin and support burden does each customer create?

Check channel dependence

A founder’s personal network, one reseller, or one major platform may explain early wins without proving scalable distribution. Ask what happens if the channel changes its terms, a partner stops referring customers, or paid acquisition becomes more expensive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Scrutinize the ask, use of funds, and milestones

TechCrunch places the ask and use of funds among the high-priority deck sections. Ask for the amount being raised, the expected runway, the hiring and operating plan, and the measurable milestones that capital should enable.

Convert spending into risk reduction

“Hire engineers and grow sales” is not a milestone plan. A stronger plan links each major expense to a risk: complete a product capability required by a named customer segment, reach a defined retention level, obtain a certification, shorten the sales cycle, or prove a repeatable acquisition channel.

Test the next-financing logic

Ask what evidence would make the company ready for its next financing or for sustainable operations. Identify the assumptions that could block that outcome. A plan that spends most of the round without resolving the central customer, product, or distribution risk deserves closer scrutiny.

A repeatable post-event evaluation workflow

  1. Within 24 hours, write the pitch thesis. State the customer, problem, product, claimed advantage, traction, market, business model, ask, and the single most important reason the company could fail.
  2. Request primary evidence. Ask for a product walkthrough, metric definitions, cohort data, customer references, pricing, cap table context where appropriate, and the financing documents relevant to your decision.
  3. Interview customers. Confirm the problem, implementation experience, usage, outcomes, renewal intent, and alternatives considered. Ask what the customer would do if the startup disappeared.
  4. Rebuild the numbers. Recalculate market size from the initial segment, inspect revenue quality, and compare acquisition cost with gross profit and payback assumptions.
  5. Run a competition check. Include internal and manual alternatives. Ask the founders to explain a recent lost deal and what changed afterward.
  6. Stress-test the plan. Model what happens if sales take twice as long, conversion is lower, a major customer leaves, or hiring slips.
  7. Record open questions. Keep evidenced, asserted, and unknown claims separate. Do not resolve uncertainty by giving the company a higher score.
  8. Choose a next action. The appropriate outcome may be a deeper diligence process, a request to reconnect after a milestone, a non-investment relationship, or no further action.

How to compare two startups fairly

Use the same stage-aware axes for every company. A pre-revenue startup should not be judged as if it had the same evidence available to a company with years of customer data, but both should answer the same underlying questions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Axis Evidence to record for each startup Decision question
Problem Customer, frequency, severity, current workaround, and budget owner Is the pain urgent enough to drive adoption and payment?
Product Working workflow, limitations, implementation needs, and differentiated outcome Would a target customer switch, and why?
Traction Metric definition, period, cohort, conversion, retention, revenue quality, and concentration What behavior demonstrates demand rather than attention?
Market and go-to-market Initial segment, reachable channel, pricing, sales cycle, acquisition evidence, and expansion path Can this team reach enough customers efficiently?
Team Founder insight, relevant relationships, operating record, and capability gaps Can the team solve the company’s most important current risk?
Competition Direct, adjacent, internal, manual, and do-nothing alternatives Why can this company win and keep winning?
Funding plan Amount, runway, use of funds, milestones, and next-risk reduction Does the round create evidence that supports the next step?

The published TechCrunch material does not prescribe a numerical scoring scale. Avoid presenting a homemade score as an objective TechCrunch or investor rating. A written evidence ledger is more honest than a precise-looking number built on guesses.

Warning signs that deserve follow-up

  • The founders describe a large market but cannot identify the first reachable customer segment.
  • The product demo depends on undisclosed manual work or a carefully selected path that customers cannot reproduce.
  • Traction is presented as cumulative sign-ups without active use, retention, conversion, or revenue context.
  • The company claims to have no competitors or treats only named software vendors as alternatives.
  • Pricing, sales cycle, acquisition cost, or renewal behavior is described as a forecast but presented like an observed fact.
  • The team cannot explain a recent lost customer, failed experiment, or product change.
  • The funding request lists activities but not measurable milestones tied to the company’s main risks.
  • Event selection, an adviser’s name, or investor interest is used as a substitute for customer evidence.

What to verify before considering an investment

Pitch evaluation is an early filter, not full due diligence. Before making an investment decision, verify the claims that could materially change your outcome.

  • Customers: references, contracts, invoices, renewal behavior, and concentration.
  • Financials: revenue recognition, cash balance, burn, runway, gross margin, liabilities, and forecast assumptions.
  • Corporate status: incorporation, ownership, outstanding securities, and authorization to issue shares.
  • Intellectual property: assignment from founders and contractors, licenses, open-source obligations, and ownership of data.
  • Legal and regulatory exposure: privacy, security, sector rules, disputes, and required approvals.
  • Financing terms: instrument, valuation or cap, discounts, liquidation preferences, pro-rata rights, and other rights that affect ownership.

The exact checks depend on jurisdiction, company stage, and the size and structure of your proposed investment. A compelling stage appearance does not replace professional legal, tax, or financial advice.

Useful context for understanding venture financing

Venture Deals: Be Smarter Than Your Lawyer and Venture Capitalist, fourth edition (2019), by Brad Feld and Jason Mendelson, explains fundraising, term sheets, deal structure, and negotiation. Wiley describes it as a guide to the venture-capital deal process, and the author’s books page lists the edition. It can help you understand financing language after a pitch, but it is not a TechCrunch-endorsed product and is not a complete startup-evaluation rubric. Confirm the edition and current availability before relying on it.

Bottom line

A strong TechCrunch Disrupt pitch earns a disciplined follow-up, not automatic confidence. Judge the company on customer pain, a working and differentiated product, quality of evidence, reachable market, founder-market fit, real alternatives, a plausible business model, and a funding plan tied to measurable milestones. Keep assertions separate from proof, compare companies on identical axes, and verify the claims that matter before treating presentation quality as business strength.
