Evaluate a prediction market in six gates before placing an order: understand exactly how the contract settles, convert the quoted price into a probability you can defend, test whether your order can actually fill and later exit, subtract every cost, verify the venue’s rules and legal availability, and check for information or conflict restrictions. If any gate is unclear, passing is a valid decision. This process improves discipline; it cannot guarantee a profitable trade.
1. Read the contract, not just the market title
A short title can hide the condition that determines whether you receive a payout. Open the complete contract specification and write down the exact event being measured before considering the price.
Define the event precisely
- Outcome: What counts as yes, no, or another listed result? Look for thresholds, ties, ranges, and exclusions.
- Deadline: Identify the time zone and the precise cutoff. A statement that is true later may not qualify if the contract uses a fixed observation time.
- Settlement source: Note the named government release, official statistic, election authority, weather station, company filing, or other source that determines the result.
- Data revision: Check whether the first published figure, a revised figure, or a specified edition of a release controls settlement.
- Exceptional cases: Find the treatment of cancellations, postponements, missing data, multiple qualifying events, technical failures, and ambiguous source language.
Regulated exchanges establish and enforce contract rules, but the practical meaning of a market still comes from its individual specification. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) explains the role of exchange rules in its Understanding Prediction Markets and Event Contracts guide. Read the venue’s rulebook and contract terms alongside the title; a familiar phrase is not a substitute for settlement language.

Make a one-sentence settlement test
Before trading, complete this sentence in your own words: “This contract settles yes only if [event] is confirmed by [source] by [deadline], under [exception rule].” If you cannot complete it without guessing, stop and seek clarification from the official rules. Do not rely on a chat message, social-media interpretation, or another trader’s summary.

2. Convert the price into a probability you can defend
For a binary contract that pays a fixed amount if the event occurs, the quoted price can be read as a rough market-implied probability. It is not an objective probability, a forecast guarantee, or evidence that the market is correct. A 65-cent illustration in a CFTC public-comment document is described as implying 65 percent; it is an example of the conversion, not a measured accuracy statistic. See the CFTC comment document.
Build an independent estimate
Estimate the chance of settlement from information you can explain independently of the displayed price. State the assumptions, the evidence that supports them, and what new information would change your estimate. Keep the estimate separate from your confidence in your analysis: a well-reasoned 55 percent estimate is still only 55 percent.
- Use the same event definition and deadline as the contract.
- Separate base rates from event-specific evidence.
- Account for correlated events when several contracts depend on the same underlying development.
- Use a range when the evidence is uncertain rather than false precision.
- Write down an update rule, such as a new official release or a specified polling threshold.
Compare value after costs
If a contract pays $1 for a winning side, a simplified gross expected value for buying at price c with your probability estimate p is p × $1 − c. Subtract transaction fees, spread, expected slippage, and any other applicable costs before deciding that a positive number is tradable. If the payout, currency, or contract structure differs, use the venue’s stated payoff rather than assuming a one-dollar settlement.
A price edge can disappear when your estimate is only slightly different from the quote. Treat your estimate as a decision input, not a promise of profit, and decide in advance how much uncertainty you are willing to tolerate.
3. Test whether you can enter and exit at a usable price
Liquidity is about the order you can execute, not the number shown beside the market. Inspect the current bid, offer, spread, and quantity available at each price level for your intended size.

Read the order book
- Bid: The highest displayed price currently offered by buyers.
- Offer: The lowest displayed price currently offered by sellers.
- Spread: The gap between those prices. Crossing it is an immediate trading cost.
- Depth: The quantity available at and beyond the best prices. A small top level can force the rest of your order to execute at worse prices.
- Recent trade: A historical fill, not a promise that a new order will execute there.
Check depth for the complete position size, including any order you might use to close it. A market that looks active for one contract may not support your size without moving the price. If you use a limit order, understand that it may remain unfilled while the event changes.
Plan the exit before entering
The CFTC says customers may trade in and out before settlement at the then-current market price to lock in gains or limit losses. The statement describes a capability, not a guaranteed favorable or immediate fill. The market may be wider, thinner, or closed when you want to exit. Include what you will do if the settlement source is delayed or the order book becomes one-sided. Never assume that a visible last price remains available during a fast-moving event.
4. Calculate the full cost of the trade
Use the venue’s current fee schedule immediately before trading. Include every charge that applies to your order type, side, size, settlement, withdrawal, conversion, or account, as well as the economic cost of crossing the spread and moving through the order book. The relevant fee amount is venue- and time-specific; there is no reliable, directly comparable fee table for all platforms here.
Use an all-in worksheet

Recalculate when the quote, size, or fee schedule changes. Do not copy a fee from an old screenshot or another product. If you cannot identify the applicable charges in the official terms, treat the cost as unknown and pass or obtain clarification.

5. Verify rules, regulation, and access for your situation
Regulatory status and access are not universal. Confirm the venue’s current status, the contract’s eligibility, and whether residents of your jurisdiction may open, fund, trade, and withdraw from the account. A venue’s status in one country or state does not establish permission elsewhere, and legal interpretations can change.
Check the primary documents
- Open the venue’s current rulebook and the specific contract rules.
- Read account, identity, age, location, and product-eligibility requirements.
- Find the dispute, correction, cancellation, and settlement-error procedures.
- Check the regulator’s current materials for the relevant product category and jurisdiction.
- Save the document version and date you relied on, because rules can be amended.
The CFTC provides an overview of prediction-market oversight at Understanding Prediction Markets and Event Contracts and publishes economic-requirements material at Economic Requirements. Use those pages to understand the regulator’s framework, then verify the particular venue and contract. As an example of why version control matters, the Kalshi rulebook page listed version 1.29 dated August 17, 2026 at the time of review; the current page and contract terms should control any decision.
Understand corrections and disputes
Find out who may correct a source error, how a settlement can be challenged, and whether a venue can cancel or amend a contract. Record the notice period and the required evidence. A clear process does not remove risk, but an absent or vague process makes the contract harder to evaluate.
6. Screen for information, conflict, and integrity problems
Do not trade when your information comes from a confidential or nonpublic source, or from a role that gives you privileged access to the subject of the contract. Also consider whether your employment, family relationship, clients, or other interests could create a conflict that the venue restricts.
The CFTC Enforcement Division’s advisory describes enforcement involving misuse of nonpublic information and fraud, including a trader affiliated with the subject of a contract. Read the advisory at CFTC Enforcement Division Issues Prediction Markets Advisory. Review the venue’s current prohibited-conduct, surveillance, and reporting rules before submitting an order.

- Decline the trade if you cannot explain the lawful source of your information.
- Do not coordinate orders to create a misleading appearance of demand or supply.
- Do not submit orders based on confidential information obtained through a duty to an employer, client, public body, or contract participant.
- Ask the venue or a qualified lawyer about a real conflict instead of relying on a forum answer.
7. Compare contracts and venues with the same scorecard
When two markets appear to cover the same event, compare the terms that can change the outcome rather than choosing by brand familiarity or the most eye-catching price.

| Integrity controls | What restrictions, surveillance, conflict rules, and reporting channels apply? |
Do not fill a table with assumed execution quality or copied fee figures. If a value is not stated in the current official material, mark it as unknown and treat that uncertainty as part of the decision.
8. A repeatable pre-trade procedure
Use this sequence for every contract, even when the event seems obvious.
- Capture the contract: Save the full specification, rulebook version, settlement source, deadline, and payoff.
- Write the settlement sentence: State exactly what must happen for each outcome and list edge cases.
- Check access: Confirm your jurisdiction, account status, product eligibility, and funding or withdrawal constraints.
- Estimate probability: Produce an independent range, list evidence, and identify what would change it.
- Record the quote: Note the current bid, offer, spread, depth, and recent trades separately.
- Size the order: Compare your intended quantity with available depth and model partial fills or slippage.
- Compute all-in value: Apply the actual payoff, fees, execution costs, and expected exit costs.
- Review integrity: Confirm that your information is public or otherwise permitted and that no conflict rule applies.
- Set an exit plan: Decide when you will hold, reduce, cancel, or accept settlement, including a delayed-source scenario.
- Make the decision: Trade only if the contract is understandable, the net edge is large enough for the uncertainty, and the rules are acceptable. Otherwise, pass.
9. Worked probability example
Suppose a binary contract is quoted at 65 cents. The CFTC comment document uses 65 cents as an illustration of a 65 percent market-implied probability; it does not say that the event’s true chance is 65 percent. In a hypothetical analysis, you might independently estimate a 70 percent chance. The five-cent gross difference is not a five-cent profit: spread, slippage, fees, the possibility that your estimate is wrong, and the ability to exit all reduce or eliminate the edge. If your estimate were 62 percent instead, the same quote would already be unfavorable before those costs. The numbers demonstrate the method only, not a recommendation or forecast.
10. Common failure modes and fixes
The title is clear but the settlement rule is not
Symptom: Traders agree on what the headline means but not which data release controls. Fix: Return to the full specification, identify the named source and revision rule, and pass if the ambiguity remains.

The last trade looks attractive
Symptom: Your intended order cannot fill at the displayed last price. Fix: Use the live bid, offer, and depth for your actual size; model a limit order that may not fill.
A small apparent edge disappears
Symptom: Your probability estimate exceeds the quote by only a few cents. Fix: Recalculate with current fees, spread, slippage, and exit costs. Require a margin that reflects estimation uncertainty.
You can trade elsewhere but not here
Symptom: The contract is visible, but your location or account is not eligible. Fix: Check the official jurisdiction and account rules; do not bypass controls with inaccurate identity or location information.

Symptom: New information widens the spread or removes depth. Fix: Follow the prewritten exit and position-size plan, and remember that an exit at a desired price is not guaranteed.
Your information may be restricted
Symptom: You learned the key fact through a confidential role or relationship. Fix: Do not trade until the venue’s rules and qualified legal advice establish that the information may be used.
When passing is the right decision
Pass when the event definition, settlement source, or exception handling is unclear; when the order book cannot support your size; when fees and slippage consume the estimated edge; when you cannot legally access the product; when the rulebook provides no acceptable remedy for a likely dispute; or when a conflict or information restriction is possible. A missed trade has a known cost—zero exposure—while an unclear contract can create an outcome you never intended to buy.
The strongest evaluation is therefore not a prediction of who will win. It is a documented decision that the contract is understandable, the price is favorable relative to an independent estimate after all costs, execution is realistic, and the venue’s rules and integrity requirements are acceptable.
