Evaluate a memory-chip company on eight linked questions: what it sells, how much of its results came from price versus bits and mix, whether its technology is reaching customers in volume, how much capacity it is adding, how durable demand is, whether the balance sheet can survive a downturn, how management allocates capital, and what the stock price already assumes. Memory is a cyclical manufacturing business, so a quarter of record revenue or a leading market-share number is not enough to establish durable earnings power.
This framework is for independent analysis, not a personalized recommendation to buy or sell a security. Use the latest annual and quarterly filings and keep every comparison on the same product definition, measurement method, period and currency.
Start by mapping the business, not by looking at the stock chart
“Memory company” is not a single business model. DRAM, high-bandwidth memory (HBM), NAND, NOR, managed NAND, solid-state drives (SSDs) and modules have different manufacturing steps, customers, pricing behavior and capital requirements. Two suppliers can both report “memory” revenue while having very different exposure to artificial-intelligence infrastructure, smartphones, PCs, enterprise storage or industrial equipment.
Separate the main product families
| Product | What it does | Typical demand drivers to investigate | Questions for an investor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conventional DRAM | Fast volatile memory used by servers, PCs, phones and embedded systems. | Server configurations, PC and handset units, content per device, cloud investment and inventory. | Is growth coming from more bits per system, higher prices, more units, or a temporary shortage? |
| HBM | A stacked DRAM product designed for very high bandwidth, especially alongside accelerator and graphics processors. | AI-accelerator deployments, customer qualification, advanced packaging and thermal or power requirements. | Which generations are sampling, qualified or shipping in volume, and how much wafer and packaging capacity do they consume? |
| NAND flash | Non-volatile storage used in SSDs, phones, PCs, memory cards and data-center systems. | Enterprise SSD demand, client devices, smartphone storage content, inventory and channel conditions. | Is the company selling raw flash, managed products or complete SSDs, and where is value captured? |
| NOR and specialty memory | Persistent memory for code storage, automotive, industrial and other embedded applications. | Vehicle production, industrial cycles, qualification periods and long product lives. | Does specialty exposure reduce commodity volatility, or is it too small to change group results? |
| Modules and managed storage | Products that combine memory components with controllers, firmware or board-level integration. | System design wins, qualification, controller supply and customer-specific specifications. | Does integration improve margins and customer retention, or add inventory and execution risk? |
Micron’s FY2026 reporting illustrates why this mapping matters: it discusses HBM as a DRAM product while also describing server DRAM, client and mobile memory, cloud-memory activities and data-center SSDs. Treat those as separate analytical exposures even when they appear in one corporate segment.

Map products to end markets and customers
Build a simple revenue map from product to end market: cloud and data centers, PCs, mobile devices, automotive, industrial and consumer storage. Then identify which customers or distributors sit behind each market. A company whose growth is concentrated in HBM sold to a few accelerator platforms has a different risk profile from one with broad mobile, automotive and industrial sales. Look for disclosures about customer concentration, strategic agreements and qualification status rather than assuming that a large addressable market equals recognized revenue.
- Record the percentage of revenue or bits associated with each product family when the company discloses it.
- Mark whether an end market is growing because of unit shipments, memory content per unit or both.
- Identify legacy businesses that could weaken while a newer product receives most of management’s attention.
- Note which products are commodity-priced and which have customer-specific specifications or software.
Decompose every reported result into price, volume, mix and cost
Revenue growth is an outcome, not an explanation. Read several quarters and classify the change in four parts:
- Average selling price (ASP): Did contract or spot prices rise or fall?
- Bit shipments: Did the company ship more gigabits because of higher production, customer demand or inventory clearance?
- Product and customer mix: Did a larger share of HBM, server memory, enterprise SSDs or other higher-value products lift the average?
- Cost per bit and utilization: Did process migration, higher fab utilization, yield improvement or packaging efficiency reduce unit cost?
Track ASP, bit shipments, gross margin, operating margin, inventory and cost-per-bit commentary wherever reported. If revenue rises while bits are flat, price or mix is doing the work. If bits rise but margins fall, the company may be adding lower-priced capacity, carrying underutilized fabs or selling into a weak part of the portfolio.

| Metric | What to record each quarter | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue by product or segment | Current quarter, prior quarter and year-ago quarter. | Shows where growth or decline is actually occurring. |
| ASP or pricing commentary | Direction, contract versus spot and products affected. | Separates price recovery from durable demand. |
| Bit shipments | Growth rate and management explanation. | Tests whether volume supports the revenue change. |
| Gross and operating margin | Reported margin and major drivers. | Reveals operating leverage and mix effects. |
| Inventory | Absolute balance, days or turns if available, and provisions. | Rising inventory can precede price pressure; falling inventory may reflect healthy sell-through or constrained supply. |
| Capital expenditure and depreciation | Actual spending, guidance and depreciation trend. | Shows whether future supply and earnings require heavy funding. |
Micron attributed FY2026 pricing and margin improvement to strong AI-related demand and constrained supply in its disclosures. That is management’s explanation for a particular period; test it against subsequent ASPs, shipments, inventory and cash flow rather than treating it as a forecast.
Compare an upcycle with a downcycle
At least one shortage period and one oversupply period should appear in your model. A company can report exceptional margins when supply is tight and still earn poor returns after new fabs come online or customers digest inventory. Build a downside case with lower memory prices, weaker utilization, delayed product ramps and the fixed costs of existing fabs. The purpose is not to predict the exact trough; it is to see whether the balance sheet and valuation tolerate a normal reversal.

Test technology leadership by execution stages
Roadmaps and “leading” language are starting points, not proof. For each important process or product, record the stage reached:
| Stage | Evidence to seek | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Development | Architecture, process work or engineering samples. | Shows technical intent but not commercial readiness. |
| Sampling | Products delivered to prospective customers for evaluation. | Confirms a design exists; customer acceptance and yield remain uncertain. |
| Qualification | Customer approval against reliability, thermal, performance and supply requirements. | Reduces adoption risk but does not guarantee large orders. |
| Volume production | Manufacturing at meaningful scale with disclosed yield or output evidence. | Tests whether the roadmap can generate revenue and acceptable costs. |
| Volume shipment | Recognized sales to customers using the product in systems. | Strongest evidence that technology has crossed into the commercial market. |
Micron’s FY2026 filing distinguishes HBM generations that were shipping, in volume production, being sampled and still under development. Do not combine those categories into one claim of market leadership.
What to examine in HBM
HBM competitiveness involves more than the memory die. Investigate DRAM process capability, stack design, base-die development, advanced packaging, thermal and power performance, test capacity, yield and qualification with major customers. A product can be technically impressive yet constrained by packaging or slow customer acceptance.
SK hynix states that HBM requires more wafers than conventional DRAM to produce the same memory capacity, creating significantly higher production-resource requirements. That statement supports a capacity-allocation question, not a universal estimate of margins or returns. Ask the company to quantify wafer starts, packaging throughput, yield and the opportunity cost to conventional DRAM where it provides those figures.
Analyze customers and whether demand can persist
Separate demand commentary from contracted or recognized revenue. Management may describe strong interest, strategic agreements or customer commitments while the accounting statements show revenue only when products are delivered under the applicable terms.

Questions for customer quality
- How concentrated are the top customers, and is concentration rising with HBM or cloud sales?
- Are agreements purchase commitments, capacity reservations, forecasts or non-binding memoranda?
- What are the cancellation, renegotiation and pricing provisions?
- How long does qualification take, and can a customer switch suppliers without redesigning its system?
- Is demand supported by deployed systems, or mainly by inventory orders in the channel?
Micron describes strategic customer agreements and growing customer demand in its FY2026 disclosures. Attribute those statements to Micron and verify later whether shipments, receivables and cash collections support them. AI infrastructure can increase demand for HBM, server DRAM and storage while traditional PC or handset demand remains weak; analyze each end market instead of allowing the AI narrative to stand in for the whole portfolio.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesScrutinize capacity plans, capex and supply discipline
Memory fabs require long lead times, specialized equipment, utilities and substantial depreciation. Compare planned and actual capital expenditure, construction milestones, cleanroom completion, equipment installation, expected output and the product mix of each project. Also ask whether management can defer or resize spending if prices fall.
How to read a capacity announcement
- Identify whether the figure is a proposed plan, an approved budget, spending to date or completed capacity.
- Record the announcement date, sites, phases, products and expected timing.
- Check whether the company disclosed funding sources, incentives, utility readiness and equipment commitments.
- Estimate when depreciation and meaningful output would begin; construction spending does not immediately create saleable bits.
- Compare the plan with demand scenarios and with competitors’ additions, not just with management’s base case.
In a June 29, 2026 newsroom explainer, SK hynix described a phased mid-to-long-term investment strategy totaling KRW 1,100 trillion across the Yongin cluster, Cheongju and a planned Southwestern cluster. The company’s stated components were KRW 600 trillion for Yongin, KRW 100 trillion for Cheongju and KRW 400 trillion for the Southwestern cluster. The latter site was to be selected after evaluation and discussions. These are announced plans, not completed investments or guaranteed output, and SK hynix said execution would respond to market conditions.
Capacity must be analyzed by product. HBM’s higher wafer requirement can make a nominal bit-growth plan consume more manufacturing resources than conventional DRAM. Do not infer the resulting supply, pricing or profitability effect without company-specific wafer, yield, packaging and utilization data.

Balance-sheet tests
- Liquidity: Can cash and committed credit cover near-term debt, supplier obligations and planned capex during a downturn?
- Cash conversion: Do reported earnings become cash after inventory investment and fab spending?
- Leverage: Would lower prices and utilization breach covenants or force equity issuance?
- Inventory quality: Are older nodes or products subject to write-downs when prices decline?
- Fixed-cost burden: How much depreciation and maintenance spending continues even when fabs run below capacity?
- R&D protection: Can the company maintain process development and packaging work without sacrificing solvency?
Micron says returns depend partly on R&D outcomes, manufacturing utilization, technology integration, product-market acceptance and efficient capital spending. Test that claim by comparing R&D and capex with delivered products, yields, margins and cash generation over multiple years.
Judge dividends and buybacks in context
A buyback made near peak earnings can destroy value if the company later needs cash for fabs or must issue debt in a downturn. Compare repurchase prices with normalized free cash flow, not with the latest quarter. Likewise, a dividend is sustainable only if the balance sheet can fund it while maintaining the technology roadmap and essential capacity investment.

Before ranking suppliers, create a table with the same period, currency and denominator for each company.
| Comparison axis | Definition to standardize | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|
| Product mix | HBM, conventional DRAM, NAND, NOR, modules and SSDs. | Segment revenue, bits, ASP and end-market disclosures. |
| Market position | Revenue share or shipment share; product and geography; quarter measured. | Named third-party publisher and issuer filing. |
| Technology execution | Sampling, qualification, volume production and shipment. | Customer announcements, filing language, yields and packaging capacity. |
| Financial quality | Normalized margins, cash generation, leverage and capex burden. | Several years of statements spanning different phases of the cycle. |
| Customer exposure | Concentration, contract visibility and end-market diversity. | Top-customer notes, agreement terms and channel data. |

Interpret market-share numbers precisely
An SK hynix SEC-filed Form F-1 amendment, citing IDC, reported global Q1 2026 revenue shares of 29.1% for SK hynix in DRAM and 56.4% in HBM. Those figures are revenue shares, not shipment shares; they describe different product markets and one specific quarter. They should not be combined into a company-wide share or treated as current indefinitely.
The same filing attributed more than 90% of global NAND revenue in Q1 2026 to five companies. That concentration describes the market on the stated IDC revenue basis; it does not identify each company’s profitability, shipment share or future position. Always attach the publisher, period, geography, product and metric to a market-share statistic.

Make valuation a separate decision
A strong industry outlook or leading product position does not answer whether a stock is cheap. Calculate valuation from the current share price and updated financial statements, then state exactly what the denominator represents:
- Trailing earnings or cash flow: reflects the latest reported conditions, which may be unusually high or low.
- Forward estimates: depend on assumptions about prices, bits, utilization, mix and capex that must be made explicit.
- Normalized-cycle earnings or cash flow: uses a through-cycle margin or average, but is only as credible as the periods and assumptions selected.
- Enterprise value: includes debt and subtracts cash, making it useful when suppliers have different financing structures.
Run at least three cases: a favorable case with sustained demand and successful ramps, a base case with normal pricing and utilization, and a downside case with weaker prices, delayed qualification, lower utilization and higher-than-planned capex. Show how the implied valuation changes under each case. The available company disclosures do not establish an independent fair value or a complete normalized-cycle comparison, so do not present market share or an attractive sector forecast as proof that a security is undervalued.
A practical due-diligence process
- Collect primary documents: Download the latest annual report, quarterly filing, earnings presentation, investor call transcript and material capacity announcements for each company.
- Build the product map: Assign revenue, bits and customers to DRAM, HBM, NAND, SSD, NOR and other products.
- Create the cycle history: Enter at least several years of ASP commentary, shipments, margins, inventory, capex and cash flow.
- Mark technology stages: Label each major node or HBM generation as development, sampling, qualification, volume production or shipment.
- Audit capacity: Separate announced investment from spending and completed output; note product mix, timing and flexibility.
- Stress customers: Identify concentration, agreement terms, qualification barriers and demand outside the strongest narrative.
- Stress the balance sheet: Lower prices and utilization in a model while keeping unavoidable capex, depreciation and debt service.
- Normalize valuation: Compare enterprise value or market capitalization with trailing, forward and through-cycle earnings or cash flow.
- Write the disconfirming case: List the specific evidence that would prove your thesis wrong, such as falling ASPs, rising inventory, delayed qualification or funding pressure.
Red flags that deserve a deeper review
- Revenue growth is reported without a price, bit, mix or cost bridge.
- Management calls a product “leading” while it remains in sampling or development.
- Capacity figures are presented as completed investment even though they are long-term plans.
- Market share lacks a named publisher, product definition, geography, period or revenue-versus-shipment label.
- AI demand is emphasized while mobile, PC or storage inventory is not quantified.
- Inventory rises faster than sales, or write-downs and utilization losses recur.
- Free cash flow remains weak because capex absorbs most operating cash during supposedly strong earnings.
- Buybacks or dividends continue while debt-funded fab commitments expand.
- The stock is valued on peak earnings with no downside case for lower memory prices.
How to interpret management forecasts and quotations
Company forecasts are useful scenarios, not independent estimates. Micron Chairman, President and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said, “Micron delivered record fiscal 2026 results, and we expect an even stronger fiscal 2027.” Treat that as management’s outlook and test it against subsequent filings, not as a guarantee.
Recommended Free Tools
Micron’s FY2026 Form 10-K states, “AI-driven memory and storage demand growth is outpacing industry supply.” This is the issuer’s characterization of conditions in that filing. An investor still needs to test whether supply additions, customer inventory and pricing support the statement over a full cycle.
Limits of what the available evidence can prove
The cited disclosures do not provide an independent memory-price forecast, an independent ranking of technology leadership, normalized earnings through a complete cycle, fair value for any stock or a comprehensive current comparison of all major suppliers. Roadmaps, capacity plans and demand commentary should be attributed to the company that issued them and checked against later filings. The disciplined conclusion is therefore conditional: identify the product and cycle exposure, verify execution and cash returns, stress capacity and demand, and only then decide whether the current valuation compensates you for the risks.
