A journal that “doesn’t spy” is not defined by a privacy label or by having no account. The important questions are where entries are stored and processed, who can access the encryption keys, what happens when you sync or back up, and whether optional features send content elsewhere. The title does not identify a particular app or provide implementation details, so this article explains the design choices a private journal requires rather than claiming that a specific one was built or independently verified.
Start by defining what “private” means
Privacy is about the paths your entries take and the people or services that can access them. “Local-first,” “encrypted,” “self-hosted,” and “no account” describe different properties; none, on its own, establishes protection against every threat.
- Local-first means the app is designed around data stored on the user’s device. It does not, by itself, say whether the entries are encrypted or whether optional features transmit them.
- Encrypted is incomplete without details about where encryption happens, what is encrypted, and who controls the keys. Encryption at rest and encryption before sync address different parts of the data path.
- No required account can reduce dependence on an account provider, but it does not establish that the app never sends data to other services.
- Self-hosted moves infrastructure under the user’s control, while making that user responsible for deployment, updates, access controls, and backups.
A useful design starts with a threat model: decide whether the priority is limiting access by an app provider, protecting a device that is lost or shared, avoiding third-party processing, or maintaining entries if a device fails. Those goals can conflict. For example, making recovery possible through a service may give that service a role in the recovery path.

Choose storage and key handling together
Local storage can reduce the amount of journal content available to a service provider, but only if the implementation and key handling support that result. A private-journal design should say plainly where the database lives, when content is encrypted, and how the key is created, stored, and used.

Examples show why implementation detail matters. MoodHaven’s product documentation describes a local-first journal with encrypted SQLite storage and no required account, and reports AES-256-GCM encryption with PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA256 at 600,000 iterations. These are the vendor’s stated implementation details, not an independent security audit. Its documentation also warns that losing the password can mean losing the data, making the recovery tradeoff explicit. MoodHaven product documentation
Mini Diarium describes an encrypted local SQLite journal and an optional private key file used for authentication. It says the file can be kept on a USB drive, in a password manager, or on another machine. That is a way to store an authentication key; it is not evidence that the USB drive contains a complete journal backup. Mini Diarium product documentation

Make the recovery tradeoff visible
If a system does not hold a recovery secret, losing the password or recovery key may leave few or no ways to restore access. If a service or another person can restore access, that creates a recovery path that needs to be explained and evaluated. A journal should make the consequence clear before a user relies on it, and distinguish recovery of account access from recovery of encrypted entries.

Sync helps keep entries available on more than one device; backups help recover data after loss or failure. Both can improve continuity, but they change where data travels or is stored. A privacy explanation should identify the destination, whether content is encrypted before it leaves the device, who controls the keys, and what the user must do to restore data.

Optional peer sync and third-party storage are not interchangeable. MoodHaven describes optional peer sync. Zen Journal’s repository describes optional Google Drive sync of an encrypted file. The latter adds a cloud-storage provider to the data path even though the repository describes the file as encrypted. Neither description alone is an independent audit of the complete implementation. Keep authentication material and journal backups conceptually separate. A key file may help authenticate a user, but unless the journal data itself is included, it cannot restore entries. A dependable backup plan should account for both the encrypted journal data and the ability to unlock it, while avoiding storage arrangements that silently give an unintended party access.

Treat AI and voice features as separate data paths
An AI or voice option can change the privacy properties of an otherwise local journal. The relevant question is not simply whether the app offers the feature, but whether processing happens on the device or sends journal content to an external provider, and what credentials or services are involved.

Zen Journal’s repository describes local voice transcription and AI modes that can run on-device, as well as support for bring-your-own-key external providers. Those are distinct processing paths: an on-device mode and an external provider should not be presented as having the same data flow. Check which mode is selected and what content it processes. Journiv’s repository says its runtime does not require an LLM service and that development use does not send users’ journal content to AI providers. This is a useful distinction between how software may have been developed and what its running app requires; neither statement makes self-hosting automatically safe. Journiv repository

Labels such as “private” are less useful than checking the storage, key, recovery, sync, and processing choices side by side. The following descriptions reflect what the linked product pages or repositories say; they are not independent security assessments.

Use a launch checklist, not a privacy slogan
Before trusting a journaling app with sensitive entries, look for clear answers to these questions:

- Who can access the keys, and what precisely happens if the password or recovery key is lost?
- Does sync involve a third party, and what data does that service receive?
- Do voice, AI, or other optional features process content locally or send it to an external provider?
- If the app is self-hosted, who is responsible for updates, access controls, and recoverable backups?
- Are product claims documented in a way that can be checked, and is an independent audit actually available? A vendor’s technical description is not the same as an audit.
A University of Oulu thesis discusses an encrypted database for its own journaling application and cautions against framing an AI journaling tool as a substitute for therapy.
