The best campus job offer is not necessarily the one with the highest hourly rate or salary. Compare the offer’s total financial value, actual duties, training and growth, location, work arrangement, and written conditions against your budget and career goals. Then resolve uncertainties with specific questions before the response deadline.
Start by identifying what kind of campus job you are being offered
“Campus job” can describe very different arrangements. A student hourly position, a paid internship, and a full-time university appointment may use different pay schedules, benefit rules, work-hour limits, academic-year calendars, and employment policies. Do not compare them as if they were interchangeable.
- Student hourly role: Confirm the hourly rate, maximum or expected hours, term dates, overtime rules, and whether student status is required throughout employment.
- Internship: Check whether pay is hourly, a fixed stipend, or salary; whether the placement has a defined end date; and what training or project deliverables are promised.
- Full-time university position: Review salary frequency, probation or introductory periods, benefits eligibility, leave, retirement contributions, and the institution’s personnel policies or collective-bargaining agreement.
Ask the employer or the relevant institution policy office to confirm student-employment rules, pay scales, union provisions, benefits eligibility, background requirements, work authorization, and any conditions attached to the offer. Career-center guidance is useful for organizing the decision, but the written offer and current institutional policy control your employment terms.

Use salary or hourly pay as the starting point, not the verdict. The USC Career Center groups offer evaluation into organization, position, location, benefits, compensation, and budget, and advises against accepting or declining based only on salary. Its offer-evaluation guidance and University of Michigan’s salary and relocation guidance both emphasize context such as geography and living costs.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Record pay in a form you can compare
- Write down the pay rate, whether it is hourly or salaried, and how often you will be paid.
- For hourly work, estimate term or annual earnings from the stated rate and the hours the employer actually expects to schedule. Treat the result as an estimate if hours can fluctuate.
- For salary, note whether the figure covers a 9-, 10-, 11-, or 12-month appointment, and whether the position is renewed annually.
- Record any bonus, stipend, differential, shift premium, relocation payment, or other financial benefit separately from base pay.
- Check when the first payment arrives and whether payroll deductions or delays affect your first month’s cash flow.
Compare the pay with a reasonable range for the same title, experience level, and geographic area. A national headline number can mislead when the job is tied to a particular city or campus. Use location-specific information and verify whether a benchmark covers university employment, private employers, internships, or another population.
Value benefits and employer-paid costs
Benefits can materially change the value of two offers with similar pay. Ask which benefits you are eligible for, when eligibility begins, what you must contribute, and whether the benefit continues during breaks or between academic terms.
| Compensation item | What to verify | How to use it in your comparison |
|---|---|---|
| Health coverage | Eligibility, employee premium, deductible, network, and start date | Estimate your annual out-of-pocket cost rather than counting coverage as free |
| Paid leave | Vacation, sick leave, holidays, personal days, and accrual rules | Check how much paid time you can actually use during the appointment |
| Retirement | Employee contribution, employer contribution, vesting, and eligibility waiting period | Separate employer contributions from cash salary and note any vesting condition |
| Tuition assistance | Who qualifies, covered fees, limits, and whether you must remain employed | Include only the portion you can realistically use for your studies |
| Bonuses or stipends | Amount, payment date, performance conditions, and whether the payment recurs | Do not treat a conditional or one-time payment as guaranteed salary |
| Relocation support | Covered expenses, reimbursement rules, tax treatment, and repayment conditions | Offset eligible moving costs, while keeping a record of expenses you must pay first |
Benefits may differ sharply between student, temporary, and regular employees. Ask for the benefits summary or plan documents instead of assuming that a university’s general benefits package applies to your appointment.
Test the offer against your personal budget
Build a simple budget for the period you will actually work. Include rent or housing, food, utilities, insurance, tuition and fees, books, debt payments, taxes, transportation, parking, health costs, and an emergency reserve. Then subtract predictable work-related expenses from expected take-home pay.
For a campus role, transportation can be a hidden deduction: a short trip may still require a parking permit, transit pass, fuel, or occasional rides. A higher gross salary can leave you with less usable money if it requires an expensive move, longer commute, or unpaid gap between academic terms.
Verify what the role really involves
A polished title does not tell you what you will do every day. UCLA’s job-offer evaluation guidance, Tufts’ evaluation checklist, and UW–Madison’s offer-management guidance all direct job seekers to examine responsibilities and working conditions in detail.

Get a concrete description of the work
- Ask, “What will I be doing in this position?”—a question published by the UW–Madison Career Center.
- Request the normal weekly responsibilities, recurring tasks, peak periods, and work that falls outside the job description.
- Confirm the supervisor, team, reporting structure, and the people or departments you will support.
- Ask how many hours are expected, when those hours occur, and whether evening, weekend, or event work is required.
- Find out how performance is evaluated, how often reviews occur, and what measurable results define success.
Compare the answers with the job posting and your interview conversations. If the offer describes one role but the supervisor describes another, ask which document governs and request the agreed description in writing.

Training is valuable when it is specific enough to change what you can do. Ask whether onboarding is structured, who teaches you, how long it lasts, and what tools or systems you will learn. Clarify whether training happens during paid work time.
- What formal orientation or technical instruction is provided?
- Will you have a named mentor, regular one-to-one meetings, or access to professional communities?
- Which projects will produce work samples, credentials, research experience, or other evidence for a future application?
- Are conferences, workshops, certifications, or continuing-education funds available?
- How will responsibility increase after you demonstrate competence?
Santa Clara University recommends assessing the skills gained and professional-development opportunities, while UW–Madison highlights role impact, advancement, mentorship, and learning. A role that gives you supervised practice in a target skill may be worth more to your career than a slightly higher-paying job with no development path.
Look for a credible growth path
Ask, “What opportunities are there for advancement?”—another UW–Madison prompt. Seek concrete examples: former employees who moved into larger roles, milestones required for additional responsibility, and the review timing used for promotions or expanded duties. Do not count a vague promise of advancement as a guaranteed outcome.
Also consider the experience you will leave with if no promotion occurs. A defined project, new software proficiency, research method, supervisory experience, or portfolio artifact can still support your next application.
Evaluate location, commute, and work arrangement
Location affects both your budget and your ability to succeed at work. The Santa Clara Career Center, University of Michigan, USC, and UC Davis all connect offer decisions with geography, transportation, relocation, commute, or work modality.

Confirm where and when you will work
- Identify the exact campus, building, laboratory, clinic, field site, or other work location.
- Confirm the expected number of in-person days and the normal start and end times.
- Ask whether remote or hybrid work is part of the written offer, a separate policy, or an arrangement that can change.
- Check whether you may be assigned to another campus, event site, or community location.
- Record parking availability and cost, transit options, bicycle access, and accessibility needs.
Calculate commute time door to door at the times you would travel, not only the distance on a map. Include fuel, fares, parking, vehicle wear, or occasional overnight stays. If relocation is required, estimate deposits, moving costs, temporary housing, and the local cost of living before comparing pay.
Ask whether the location fits your life
Santa Clara’s checklist asks, “Does the job’s location align with my lifestyle and preferences?” Apply that question to housing, family or caregiving responsibilities, health needs, academic commitments, climate, community, and the time you want available outside work. A role can be professionally attractive but impractical if the commute prevents you from attending required classes or maintaining essential support.
Audit the written offer before you decide
Request the complete offer and place every negotiated point in writing. The written document should let you verify the same facts you used in your comparison rather than relying on recollection from an interview.

Compare the offer letter with the relevant employee handbook, student-employment policy, union agreement, or benefits summary. If the documents conflict, ask the employer which term controls and request a corrected letter.
Resolve uncertainty with precise questions
Ask one question per issue and explain why you need the answer. For example: “The letter lists 15 hours per week, while our conversation mentioned up to 20. Which number should I use for planning?” Specific questions make it easier for the employer to answer and create a record of the agreed term.
Do not assume every term is negotiable. UW–Madison distinguishes among items that are usually, sometimes, or generally not negotiable. Policies, pay scales, appointment dates, student-work limits, and union rules may constrain what a supervisor can change. You can still ask whether an adjustment is possible and what approval is required.

Handle the response deadline professionally
If you need time to compare offers, review benefits, or obtain advice, request an extension promptly and politely. State the date you are requesting and confirm that you remain interested. The employer controls whether to grant an extension, so continue evaluating the offer under the original deadline until you receive written approval for more time.

Use one worksheet for every offer. The comparison should include:
- Financial value after relevant expenses: expected pay, benefits, taxes, commuting, relocation, and other unavoidable costs.
- Role and skills: quality of duties, relevance to your goals, supervision, and work samples.
- Training and mentoring: specificity of onboarding, access to mentors, professional development, and feedback.
- Advancement and future value: credible progression, references, networking, and experience that supports the next step.
- Location and schedule: commute, in-person requirements, flexibility, hours, and compatibility with classes or other obligations.
- Personal priorities: health, family, finances, community, academic plans, and risk tolerance.
Identify your priorities before assigning weights. There is no universal formula that says salary should count 50 percent, training 30 percent, or location 20 percent; the appropriate weighting depends on your circumstances. You can use a simple scoring sheet, but write down the reason for each score and keep factual uncertainties separate from personal preference.
| Worksheet field | Offer A | Offer B |
|---|---|---|
| Expected pay for the appointment | Record the stated rate or salary and your calculation | Record the stated rate or salary and your calculation |
| Benefits and employee costs | List eligibility, costs, leave, retirement, and tuition support | List eligibility, costs, leave, retirement, and tuition support |
| Core duties and skills | Describe the work and its relevance to your goals | Describe the work and its relevance to your goals |

| Unresolved questions | List each missing or conflicting term | List each missing or conflicting term |
| Personal fit | Note the strongest advantage and largest concern | Note the strongest advantage and largest concern |
Keep an “unresolved questions” column until you have answers. A confident score based on an assumption is less useful than a lower-confidence score that clearly identifies what must be confirmed.

Choosing the highest headline pay
Problem: Gross salary hides benefit costs, taxes, commute, relocation, and unpaid gaps. Correction: Compare expected usable income and the full package, then test it against your budget.

Problem: An informal arrangement may change with a supervisor, policy, or campus need. Correction: Confirm the expected work arrangement and whether it appears in the offer or governing policy.
Ignoring institutional rules
Problem: Student status, union terms, benefits thresholds, work authorization, or background requirements can change eligibility. Correction: Verify each condition with the employing institution before accepting.

A practical decision sequence
- Save the offer letter, benefits documents, policies, and your interview notes in one place.
- Classify the appointment as hourly, internship, temporary, or full-time and identify the rules that apply.
- Calculate expected pay for the actual appointment and list benefits, employee costs, bonuses, and relocation support.
- Build a personal budget that includes commute, housing, taxes, tuition, and other work-related costs.
- Confirm duties, supervisor, hours, evaluation measures, training, mentoring, and advancement evidence.
- Check the exact location, commute, in-person requirement, remote or hybrid language, and schedule fit.
- Write down every unclear or conflicting term and ask the employer a specific question about each one.
- If necessary, request an extension before the deadline and wait for written confirmation.
- Compare every offer using the same financial, career, location, schedule, and personal-priority criteria.
- Accept only after the final terms are clear, then keep the accepted offer and related policy documents for your records.
These steps turn a campus offer into a decision you can explain: what you will earn, what you will learn, where and when you will work, which conditions apply, and how the role advances your own goals.
