Evaluate a bowler by separating control, wicket threat, role difficulty and match context. Wickets record dismissals that happened, while economy rate records runs conceded. Neither shows how hard the overs were, whether batters were unusually strong, how much pressure a spell created, or how many dangerous deliveries went unrewarded. A sound comparison therefore matches bowlers by format and assignment, combines outcome statistics with phase and ball-level measures, and labels every adjusted score as a model output rather than an objective universal rating.

Why wickets and economy rate are incomplete

A scorecard gives several useful but different outcomes. Wickets count dismissals credited to a bowler. Economy rate is runs conceded per over. Bowling average combines runs conceded with wickets, while strike rate measures balls per wicket. Each answers a narrow question: what happened, how many runs were allowed, or how often a dismissal arrived. None fully describes the bowler’s contribution.

Fielding can drop a catch, an edge can miss the cordon, or a batter can survive a delivery that would usually produce a wicket. Conversely, a bowler may receive a wicket from a poor ball hit straight to a fielder. Treating the final wicket total as the entire measure confuses conversion with the underlying chance.

Economy has a similar limitation. Conceding four runs per over in a low-scoring match is not automatically harder than conceding six in a high-scoring match. A new-ball spell against elite batters, a middle-over spell on a turning pitch, and two overs at the death face different scoring environments. Compare like with like before interpreting any rate.

What the conventional figures can and cannot tell you

Bowling average is useful for describing the runs associated with each wicket, but it is heavily affected by which dismissals occurred and by how many innings a bowler completed. A bowler who creates repeated chances that are dropped can have a high average even when the deliveries were effective. Strike rate similarly records balls per wicket, not the quality of the balls or the difficulty of the batters faced. Both are outcome measures and should remain in the report, but neither should be treated as a complete quality score.

Raw totals also reward opportunity. A bowler selected for more matches, more overs or a preferred phase will accumulate more wickets and dots than a teammate with a smaller workload. State the number of overs and innings before comparing totals, and use rates only after confirming that the underlying roles are comparable.

Start with a fair comparison group

Before calculating anything, define whom the bowler is being compared with. Use the same format, competition level and broad tactical role wherever possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Format: Tests, ODIs and T20s have different over lengths, scoring patterns, workloads and tactical objectives.
  • Phase: In limited-overs cricket, powerplay, middle-over and death assignments expose bowlers to different field restrictions, batter intent and boundary risks.
  • Role: A starting new-ball bowler, a middle-over control bowler and a death specialist should not share one unqualified leaderboard.
  • Sample: State the matches, innings, balls or overs included. A short spell can be dominated by one boundary or wicket.

Also match competition level and period where possible. A domestic sample, an international sample and a franchise sample may involve different batter pools, grounds and tactical conventions. If a bowler changed from opening to first change, or from occasional death overs to a regular death role, show the split instead of averaging away the change.

The 2026 systematic review of limited-overs professional cricket covers studies published from 2007 through April 2024. It reports that existing evidence is concentrated on professional men’s ODI and T20 cricket, with important gaps for professional women’s cricket and The Hundred. A phase finding from that literature should not be transferred to Tests or another competition without supporting evidence. Read the systematic review.

Measure run control, not just runs per over

Economy rate with phase context

Retain economy rate, but attach the phase and match conditions to it. Report, for example, a bowler’s powerplay economy separately from their middle-over and death economy when the sample allows. Also show how many overs were actually bowled in each phase; a phase rate based on two overs is less stable than one based on a substantial workload.

When comparing economy, identify which runs are charged to the bowler under the data provider’s convention. Wides and no-balls generally count as bowler-conceded runs, while byes and leg-byes may not, and providers can differ in how they expose those events in ball-by-ball files. A reader should be able to reproduce the denominator and understand why two databases might show slightly different rates.

Dot-ball rate and dot-ball pressure

Dot balls show deliveries on which no run was scored. Consecutive dots can increase pressure, restrict a batter’s options and contribute to a later wicket. In T20 analysis, dot-ball factor is used as an additional lens alongside economy. Do not treat a dot percentage as self-explanatory: providers differ in how they code wides, no-balls, byes, leg-byes and other deliveries.

Interpret dots with the field and innings state. A defensive field may make dots easier but permit singles; an attacking field may produce fewer dots while creating more wicket chances. A bowler who concedes no boundaries but allows frequent singles has a different profile from one who builds long dot-ball clusters.

Count clusters as well as isolated dots when the data support it. One dot every over can produce the same percentage as a short sequence of consecutive dots, yet the sequence may force a batter to change risk level. Report the definition used—such as consecutive legal deliveries—and do not imply that a cluster automatically caused a wicket.

Boundary exposure

Track fours and sixes conceded, ideally per ball or per over and by phase. Boundary rate reveals a form of risk that economy alone can hide. Two bowlers can have the same economy while one concedes many singles and the other gives up rare but damaging sixes. The tactical consequences differ, especially late in an innings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pair boundary rate with the score state. A boundary conceded while defending a large lead is not the same tactical event as one that turns a manageable required rate into a finishing opportunity. Record whether the batter was attacking because of the target, the field, or the end of the innings.

Measure wicket threat separately from wickets taken

Actual wickets: the conversion result

Wickets remain essential. They remove batters, change matchups and can halt scoring. Record the number, dismissal type and the batter dismissed, because a wicket of a set top-order batter usually changes the situation more than a tail-end dismissal. These are observed scorecard outcomes, not estimates.

Dismissal quality also matters. A bowler who repeatedly removes established batters may have greater tactical impact than one whose wickets arrive against the lower order, even if the totals match. Describe the innings position and batter role rather than assigning an unverified bonus to a particular dismissal.

Delivery quality and expected wicket chance

When credible ball-tracking data exist, add a delivery-level wicket-probability measure. CricViz’s wicket probability (WWP), described by ESPN, assesses delivery quality and estimates the chance that a ball produces a wicket. It can identify a wicketless spell containing many dangerous deliveries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

WWP is a model-based estimate, not a wicket and not proof that a bowler was unlucky. Its result depends on the model, input tracking data and comparison population. Label it explicitly as expected or model-derived, and report the method and sample alongside the number. See the explanation of wicket-probability analysis.

Opportunity versus conversion

A useful report separates three questions:

  1. How many wickets did the bowler actually take?
  2. How many high-quality wicket opportunities did their deliveries create?
  3. How often were those opportunities converted by the fielding side?

The first is a result, the second is a model estimate when tracking data are available, and the third includes fielding and chance. Keeping the categories separate prevents an expected value from being presented as if it happened on the field.

Do not infer conversion from wickets alone. Conversion requires a defined opportunity measure and reliable records of catches, missed chances or other events. If those records are unavailable, say so rather than estimating a fielding effect from the final scorecard.

Account for phase and tactical assignment

Powerplay

Powerplay bowlers work with fielding restrictions and often attack the hardest new-ball batters. Swing, seam, bounce and an attacking line may create high wicket threat while also carrying boundary risk. Compare their powerplay figures with other powerplay workloads, not with a spinner who operates after the field spreads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Middle overs

Middle-over bowlers commonly target rotation, matchup advantages and the buildup of pressure. Dot-ball clusters, boundary prevention and the ability to force a low-percentage shot can matter as much as raw wickets. Spin and pace-off methods may be judged differently depending on pitch and batter combinations.

Death overs

Death specialists face maximum batting intent, older balls and field placements designed to protect boundaries. A high economy can reflect the assignment rather than poor execution. Assess yorkers, slower balls, boundary rate, attempted and completed defensive plans, and wickets of attacking batters within the same phase.

The review of limited-overs performance identifies phase-specific tactics and indicators. It supports splitting workloads by powerplay, middle overs and death overs before comparing rates, rather than treating all overs as interchangeable. Consult the review’s phase-analysis discussion.

Put every spell in match context

Context changes the value of the same delivery sequence. ESPNcricinfo describes Smart Stats as “a new way of looking at numbers, by adding context to every performance, batting or bowling.” Its approach considers pressure, pitch conditions, opposition quality and match situation, then weights runs and wickets accordingly. Read ESPNcricinfo’s Smart Stats introduction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a transparent evaluation, record at least:

  • Score state: required rate, wickets remaining, target, lead or deficit, and whether the innings was rebuilding or accelerating.
  • Opposition quality: batter quality, handedness and matchup strength rather than only the team’s name.
  • Conditions: pitch pace and grip, dew, wind, altitude, boundary dimensions and ball age.
  • Fielding context: field restrictions, catching opportunities, misfields and dropped chances.
  • Pressure: whether the spell protected a lead, stopped a partnership or defended a difficult total.

These details explain why a seven-run over can be excellent in one innings and costly in another. They should accompany the rate, not be added as an unsupported narrative after the fact.

Match state can change within an over. A wicket with a new batter, a required-rate spike after a boundary, or a tactical timeout may alter the value of the next delivery. Use ball-by-ball state when available instead of assigning one context label to an entire spell.

Use adjusted metrics carefully

Smart Economy Rate and Smart Wickets

ESPNcricinfo’s Smart Stats includes Smart Wickets and Smart Economy Rate. Its T20 explanation describes economy adjusted for the other bowlers in the match and the phase bowled, plus a dot-ball factor intended to capture pressure from strings of dots. These are ESPNcricinfo’s definitions, not a single sport-wide standard. A published Smart Stats score should therefore include the metric name, provider and relevant context.

Do not combine a proprietary adjusted score with an ordinary economy rate as if both used the same scale. A model’s weighting, baseline and data window determine its output. See ESPNcricinfo’s T20 Smart Stats explanation and its explainer on how Smart Stats works.

Advanced combined measures

Academic performance-analysis work discusses combined indicators such as CRK/CRM and CBR/CBRA, pressure indices and clutch-bowling approaches. These can be useful for specialist analysis, but they are not necessary for a first comparison. If you use one, define every component, specify the population and calculation basis, and explain what the score does not capture. A complex label does not make a rating universally valid.

Keep the raw components visible. A composite can hide whether a high score came from wickets, economy, pressure or an assumed phase adjustment. Publish the underlying overs, runs, wickets and phase splits beside the composite so readers can audit the conclusion.

A practical evaluation workflow

  1. Define the question. Decide whether you are evaluating run restriction, wicket threat, end-of-innings impact, selection value or overall contribution.
  2. Set the comparison group. Match format, competition, period, phase workload and broad role.
  3. Build the outcome baseline. Collect overs, runs, economy, wickets, average, strike rate, boundaries conceded and dot-ball rate.
  4. Split by phase. Report powerplay, middle-over and death figures where applicable, with the number of overs in each split.
  5. Add opportunity data. Use delivery quality or expected-wicket measures only when the tracking source and method are identified.
  6. Describe the situation. Add score state, target or lead, opposition and batter quality, conditions, field and pressure.
  7. Check conversion. Compare modelled wicket opportunity with actual wickets and note fielding events such as drops when reliably recorded.
  8. State uncertainty. Flag small samples, changing roles, missing tracking data and differences between providers.
  9. Make a role-specific judgment. Say whether the bowler excelled at containment, attack, phase execution or a combination, instead of declaring one metric the winner.

Use the same definitions for every player in the comparison. If one bowler has tracking data and another has only a scorecard, do not place their modelled values in a single ranking without explaining the evidence mismatch.

How to present two bowlers without misleading readers

Axis What to report Interpretation
Format and role Format, competition, phase assignments and overs in each phase Establishes whether the comparison is fair
Control Economy, dot-ball rate, dot clusters and boundary rate by phase Shows restriction and pressure, not just runs
Threat Actual wickets and, where available, labelled wicket-probability output Separates dismissals from delivery quality
Situation Score state, opposition, batter quality, conditions and field Explains difficulty and tactical value
Evidence Scorecard totals, ball-by-ball coding or tracking/model estimates Shows how directly each claim is observed

A containment bowler may have few wickets but repeatedly suppress scoring and create pressure for a partner. An attacking bowler may take decisive wickets while conceding more runs. The appropriate conclusion depends on the team’s task in that phase, not on a universal hierarchy between economy and wickets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common analytical pitfalls

  • One leaderboard for every role: Aggregate rankings mix powerplay, middle-over and death assignments and can reward easier workloads.
  • Small-sample certainty: A handful of overs can produce an extreme rate. Show the workload and avoid strong claims from a short spell.
  • Confusing expected and actual events: A modelled wicket chance is not a dismissal, and a high estimate does not prove bad luck.
  • Ignoring the field: Runs and dots are partly shaped by placements, restrictions and fielding execution.
  • Mixing providers: Different definitions for legal balls, extras, phases and boundaries can make apparently identical rates non-comparable.
  • Generalising beyond the evidence: Findings concentrated in men’s professional ODI and T20 cricket do not automatically describe women’s cricket, The Hundred or Tests.

Data sources and limitations

Scorecards are the most accessible source for overs, runs and wickets. Ball-by-ball data add phase splits, dot sequences, boundaries, match state and matchup detail, but providers may code extras and event types differently. Tracking-based measures add delivery location and movement information, yet they are model outputs whose assumptions should be disclosed.

The ICC Player Comparison page is a free starting point for side-by-side player information, including bowling style and strike rate. The available page does not establish that it provides pressure measures, delivery-quality estimates or every phase split discussed here, so use it for basic comparisons rather than as a complete evaluation system. Open the ICC Player Comparison tool.

Small samples, role changes and selection effects can distort conclusions. A bowler used only in favorable matchups may have excellent rates that do not transfer to another assignment. Conversely, a specialist repeatedly used in the most difficult phase may look ordinary in aggregate while performing well relative to that burden.

Missingness is itself relevant. If tracking is available only at selected grounds or in later seasons, a modelled comparison may represent venue or era differences as player differences. Note the dates, competitions and coverage rather than implying that an unavailable observation was zero.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A concise reporting template

For each bowler, publish the format and date range, role and phase workload, overs, economy, wickets, strike rate, dot-ball and boundary rates, then a short context note. Add a clearly labelled expected-wicket or delivery-quality measure only if the data source supports it. Finish by stating the team task the bowler performed: containment, partnership-breaking, new-ball attack, death-over defense or a combination.

This format lets readers distinguish observed outcomes from estimates and compare bowlers who faced genuinely similar jobs. It also makes the limits of the conclusion visible instead of hiding them inside one composite number.

Questions readers often ask

Readers frequently want to know whether a wicketless spell can be valuable, whether an expensive spell can still be successful, and how to compare bowlers assigned to different phases. The answer in each case is to identify the team task, then use control, threat and context measures appropriate to that task. No single adjusted number removes the need for that explanation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is economy rate still useful when evaluating a bowler?

Yes. Economy measures runs conceded per over, but it should be read with phase, score state, opposition and workload. Dot-ball and boundary rates can explain how that economy was produced.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a bowler be excellent without taking wickets?

Yes. Sustained run restriction, dot-ball pressure and high-quality wicket opportunities can make a wicketless spell valuable. Any opportunity figure should be identified as model-derived rather than an actual dismissal.

What is the fairest way to compare a T20 death bowler with a powerplay bowler?

Do not use one overall leaderboard. Compare each bowler with others carrying the same phase role, then describe how the different assignments affect economy, boundaries, pressure and wicket opportunities.

Are Smart Stats and wicket probability official universal ratings?

No. Smart Stats is ESPNcricinfo’s context-adjusted system, and wicket probability is a model-based estimate described for CricViz. Their definitions, inputs and baselines should be named whenever their scores are used.

Should bowling average and strike rate be ignored?

No. They remain useful outcome summaries: average relates runs to wickets and strike rate relates balls to wickets. They should be paired with phase, workload, opposition and opportunity measures rather than treated as complete evaluations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much data is enough for a reliable comparison?

There is no universal cutoff in the available evidence. Report the number of overs, innings and phases, flag short samples, and avoid strong conclusions when one event can materially change the rate.

What if ball-tracking or expected-wicket data are unavailable?

Use scorecard and ball-by-ball evidence: phase-adjusted economy, dots, dot clusters, boundaries, wickets, batter quality and score state. State that delivery-quality estimates were not available instead of approximating them.

Can a high economy still represent good death bowling?

Yes, because death overs expose bowlers to maximum batting intent and boundary risk. Compare the bowler with other death workloads and examine wickets, boundary exposure, score state and execution rather than economy alone.

Why must provider definitions be checked?

Ball-by-ball systems can differ in how they code legal deliveries, wides, no-balls, byes, leg-byes, phases and boundaries. Those choices affect economy and dot-ball rates, so disclose the source and definitions.

The Bottom Line

The best bowler evaluation is role-specific and transparent: combine wickets and economy with phase-adjusted control, dot-ball and boundary patterns, delivery-quality evidence when available, and the pressure, opposition and conditions of the spell. Keep observed results separate from model estimates, disclose samples and definitions, and judge the bowler against the job they were asked to do.
