Short answer: Do not judge a blockchain analytics report by its wallet count, risk score, or polished charts. First determine exactly what was measured, the ledger cutoff and coverage, how raw data was indexed and transformed, which findings are deterministic versus inferred, how wallet ownership was attributed, and whether an independent analyst can reproduce the result. Treat labels and scores as confidence-qualified leads until those checks pass.
A reliable report makes its sources, methods, exclusions, uncertainty, and validation visible. It distinguishes a transaction fact that can be recomputed from a claim about who controls an address or what a person intended. The following process gives you a defensible way to review a report for investigations, compliance, litigation, treasury decisions, or risk management.
Start by defining what the report is claiming
Reliability depends on the claim, not on the report’s format. Write each material conclusion as a testable statement before reviewing the evidence. A claim such as “address A sent 4.2 ETH to address B in transaction hash X” is a ledger fact. A claim such as “address A belongs to an exchange” or “the transfer was intended to launder funds” is an inference that requires additional evidence.

Separate deterministic and inferential findings
- Deterministic findings can be recomputed from specified public data: balances at a stated block, transaction inputs and outputs, token transfers, contract calls, block timestamps, and a path between addresses.
- Probabilistic findings rely on heuristics, external intelligence, clustering, machine-learning models, or analyst judgment: common ownership, service identification, beneficial owner, risk category, or intent.
- Contextual findings combine ledger facts with off-chain records such as sanctions lists, court filings, user-provided information, or an account provider’s records. The report should identify each source and explain how it changes the conclusion.
Require the author to label every important statement with its evidence type and confidence. A deterministic transfer can still be misread if the wrong chain, token contract, or block range was selected. An attribution can be well supported without being certain. Mixing both types in one unqualified sentence is a major reliability warning.

Check scope, cutoff, and freshness before reading the conclusions
An analysis is not reproducible unless another analyst knows exactly which ledger state was examined. Look for a block height or range, extraction timestamp, confirmation policy, and a description of how reorganizations were handled.
| Scope item | What the report should state | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Chains and networks | Every chain, layer-2 network, sidechain, and test network included or excluded | The same address format can exist on different networks, while activity on one network may be invisible in a single-chain report. |
| Block cutoff | Final block height for each network, plus the extraction date and time zone | Balances, labels, and exposure change as new blocks arrive. A date without a block height can produce different results after a reorg. |
| Date range | First and last block or timestamp analyzed, including whether timestamps are inclusive | Boundary transactions can be omitted or counted twice when reports use different conventions. |
| Confirmations and reorgs | Required confirmations and the procedure for replacing orphaned blocks | Unconfirmed or reorganized transactions may not represent the final canonical history. |
| Transaction types | Native transfers, token standards, contract calls, internal traces, logs, bridges, and failed transactions | A report limited to top-level transactions can miss value moved through contracts or internal calls. |
| Obfuscation and privacy | Coverage and treatment of mixers, CoinJoin, privacy tools, shielded pools, and peel chains | These mechanisms break simple address-following assumptions and create both blind spots and false links. |
| Update latency | How quickly new blocks, label changes, and intelligence updates enter the dataset | Two reports produced on the same day can reflect different ledger states and label versions. |
Google Cloud’s blockchain datasets document indexed blocks, transactions, logs, and call traces; Ethereum documentation treats these as core on-chain data elements. Use that level of specificity as the minimum standard: a report should identify which data objects it queried, not merely say that it used “on-chain data.”
Trace the raw-data provenance and transformation pipeline
Ask for a data lineage statement that starts at a node or named dataset and ends at each chart, score, and conclusion. The statement should identify the node or provider, indexer name and version, schema, query logic, transformations, exclusions, and external databases.
Questions for the data owner
- Which node implementation or archived dataset supplied the blocks?
- Was the node archival, and can it return historical state and contract traces for the entire period?
- Which indexer and software version decoded logs, traces, and token standards?
- What schema maps raw fields to the report’s concepts such as volume, counterparty, or exposure?
- Were duplicate events, failed calls, self-transfers, dust, spam tokens, or unsupported contracts removed?
- How were decimals, rebasing tokens, wrapped assets, and native-versus-token values normalized?
- Which external label, sanctions, service, or commercial-intelligence databases were joined to the ledger?
- When were those external records collected, and how are conflicting labels resolved?
Demand examples of the actual query or transformation for a material result. A headline “volume” may mean gross transfer value, net flow, USD conversion at a particular price, or only transfers classified as economically meaningful. Those are different measures. If the report cannot define the measure, do not compare it with another report’s number.

Classify the evidence behind every attribution
Address ownership is not visible in the ledger by default. A wallet can be controlled by a person, a service, a custodian, a smart contract, or several parties. Chainalysis’s ontology distinguishes structural analysis from intelligence attribution; that distinction is useful even when a different provider produced the report.
Structural evidence
Structural evidence describes relationships that follow from transactions or contract behavior: repeated input patterns, consolidation, funding paths, shared withdrawal destinations, or interaction with a known contract. The report should show the addresses, hashes, blocks, and rule that produced the relationship. Another analyst should be able to recompute it.
Attribution evidence
Attribution evidence connects an address or cluster to a real-world entity. Require the source type, date, independence, reasoning, and confidence. Stronger sources may include a signed disclosure, a regulated service’s records, a court exhibit, or independently corroborated public information. A label copied from another analytics database is not independent confirmation.
Intent and behavior claims
Statements about fraud, laundering, evasion, or intent require more than a path or label. The report should separate observed actions from interpretation and list plausible alternative explanations. A transfer through a high-risk service may be consistent with several lawful or unlawful scenarios; the ledger alone does not select one.

Interrogate clustering instead of accepting a wallet count
Clustering groups addresses that a method believes share control. Ask whether each grouping rule is deterministic or probabilistic and whether the report exposes the addresses, rule, exceptions, and confidence. Common-input heuristics, change-address detection, timing, funding patterns, and service behavior can all be useful, but each has failure cases.
Edge cases that require explicit treatment
- CoinJoin and collaborative transactions: multiple owners intentionally combine inputs, so common-input assumptions can create false positives.
- Mixers and peel chains: value may be split, delayed, or recombined, making a simple hop count misleading.
- Bridges and wrapped assets: one economic movement can appear as burns, locks, mints, and releases across several networks.
- Custodians and exchanges: omnibus wallets can hold many customers’ funds, while internal transfers may not appear on-chain.
- Smart-contract wallets: contract control, delegated keys, and upgrade paths may not resemble externally owned accounts.
- Shared infrastructure: payment processors, miners, staking operators, and treasury systems can create legitimate common patterns.
Request false-positive and false-negative controls, preferably with results broken down by task and network. A large cluster count is not evidence of quality. An incorrect cluster can contaminate every downstream flow, exposure, and risk score.
Treat machine-learning labels and risk scores as triage
Machine learning can prioritize leads, but a score is not a finding by itself. The report should describe the model’s inputs, training or validation context, calibration, version, score meaning, and human-review workflow.
Recommended Free Tools
Minimum questions for a model-generated conclusion
- What event or label is the model predicting?
- What data was available at the stated cutoff, and could later labels have leaked into training or evaluation?
- How are confidence levels calibrated, and does a score of 80 mean the same thing across chains and use cases?
- What known-ground-truth sets or peer reviews were used?
- How are edge cases, novel contracts, and sparse histories handled?
- Who reviewed the output before it was presented as a conclusion?
Responsible providers are transparent about confidence levels, maintain rigorous data-quality standards, and build workflows for human review rather than treating risk scores as definitive verdicts. Use the score to decide what to examine next; cite the underlying transactions and corroborating records when making a decision.

Demand a reproducible evidence package
A qualified reviewer should be able to follow the report from conclusion to raw evidence without relying on an undocumented vendor interface. For high-stakes work, preserve the package as an exhibit set with hashes and chain-of-custody records.
Contents of a defensible package
- A scope sheet listing networks, block ranges, extraction timestamps, confirmation rules, and reorg treatment.
- Transaction hashes, block numbers, addresses, contract addresses, token identifiers, and decoded event data for every material assertion.
- The node or dataset name, indexer and software versions, schema, query text, and transformation code or documented logic.
- A manifest of exports, screenshots, reports, and label files with cryptographic hashes and creation times.
- A record of exclusions, unresolved addresses, unavailable traces, API failures, and manual edits.
- Definitions for volume, exposure, value conversion, cluster, confidence, and risk category.
- Attribution records showing source, independence, collection date, analyst, and rationale.
- A review log showing who checked the work, what changed, and which issues remain open.
SEQRIA describes this standard as structuring reports so another qualified analyst can verify or challenge each conclusion using public ledger data. OBIS-style standards work likewise emphasizes clear, portable descriptions rather than opaque screenshots. If the provider will not export the evidence or method, record that limitation and reduce the weight given to the result.
Look for independent validation and legal scrutiny
Marketing claims of “high accuracy” are not a universal benchmark. Ask what task was measured, against which known ground truth, on which networks and dates, and whether the test set was independent of model development.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Useful validation evidence
- Peer review by an analyst who did not build the report.
- Known-ground-truth testing for service identification, clustering, and transaction classification.
- Error rates separated into false positives and false negatives, with examples.
- Performance by chain, asset type, language, geography, and time period where relevant.
- Re-testing after major protocol upgrades, indexer changes, or label updates.
- Documented court, regulator, or audit scrutiny that explains what methods were accepted, challenged, or limited.
Legal acceptance of one analysis does not make every output from that system accurate. Courts and regulators generally need a transparent method, qualified testimony, preserved records, and a clear statement of limitations. Treat scrutiny as evidence about a particular use and date, not as a blanket guarantee.

Compare two reports on meaningful axes
When reports disagree, compare their methods before comparing their totals. Record the differences in a review matrix.
| Comparison axis | Questions to record for each report |
|---|---|
| Coverage | Which chains, dates, transaction types, tokens, bridges, and traces are included? |
| Raw-data completeness | Are blocks, logs, internal calls, failed transactions, and historical state available? |
| Provenance | Which node, dataset, indexer, schema, and version produced the data? |
| Method type | Which results are deterministic, heuristic, model-based, or analyst-entered? |
| Attribution quality | What is the source, independence, date, and confidence for each label? |
| Confidence calibration | Are scores defined, calibrated, and accompanied by uncertainty? |
| Obfuscation handling | How are CoinJoin, mixers, privacy tools, bridges, and custodians treated? |
| Freshness | What is the block cutoff, label update schedule, and typical ingestion delay? |
| Reproducibility | Can a reviewer obtain hashes, queries, versions, transformations, and exports? |
| Validation | Is there independent testing, peer review, error analysis, or legal scrutiny? |
| Explainability | Can an analyst see why an address was clustered or scored? |
| Exportability and cost | Can evidence be preserved in standard formats, and what recurring or usage fees apply? |
Do not resolve a disagreement by choosing the larger number. First align the cutoff, asset valuation, chain coverage, and inclusion rules. If the reports still differ, preserve both calculations and explain which assumptions drive the gap.
Use a repeatable review workflow
- Write the decision question. State whether you need a transaction fact, exposure estimate, attribution, sanctions decision, investigative lead, or opinion about intent.
- Split the report into atomic claims. Number each material statement and mark it deterministic, probabilistic, or contextual.
- Capture the scope. Record networks, blocks, timestamps, confirmations, reorg policy, transaction types, and update latency.
- Trace a sample to raw data. Select high-impact results and follow each to hashes, blocks, logs, traces, and source queries.
- Audit transformations. Recalculate decimals, token prices, net and gross flows, bridge legs, and exclusions.
- Examine labels and clusters. Identify the rule, source, independence, confidence, and unresolved addresses.
- Challenge edge cases. Test CoinJoin, mixers, bridges, custodians, contract wallets, and reorgs relevant to the case.
- Review model evidence. Check inputs, version, calibration, validation, and human approval for every machine-generated score.
- Reproduce independently. Have a qualified reviewer repeat the query or calculation using the preserved versions and manifests.
- Record limits and alternatives. State what the report cannot establish, competing explanations, and the confidence assigned to each conclusion.
Recognize red flags and decide what to do
| Red flag | Why it matters | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| No block cutoff or extraction timestamp | The result cannot be recreated and may already be stale. | Request a rerun with a fixed cutoff; otherwise treat the result as provisional. |
| One score presented as proof of criminality or ownership | A probabilistic output is being treated as a deterministic fact. | Require the model explanation, source records, and human review. |
| “Proprietary algorithm” with no method summary | Opaque rules prevent challenge and error analysis. | Ask for an auditable description, sample calculations, and limitations. |
| Cluster labels without addresses or source dates | Downstream exposure may rest on an unverified copied label. | Demand the attribution record and independent corroboration. |
| Coverage advertised only as a chain count | Chain count says nothing about traces, tokens, history, or freshness. | Compare the actual data objects and cutoff for your case. |
| No discussion of privacy tools, bridges, or custodians | Known blind spots are being hidden or ignored. | Ask for an impact assessment and mark affected conclusions low confidence. |
| Exports limited to screenshots | Screenshots lack query history, provenance, and integrity evidence. | Obtain machine-readable data and a hashed manifest. |
State uncertainty so decision-makers can use the report safely
End each material conclusion with a confidence level and a reason, not with a vague disclaimer. Identify unresolved addresses, missing chains, unavailable traces, uncertain exchange-rate conversions, and alternative explanations. Explain whether uncertainty could change the decision: a missing bridge leg may alter the identity of a counterparty, while a small rounding difference may not.
A useful conclusion has four parts: what was observed, how it was established, what remains inferred, and what evidence would change the assessment. For example, you might state that a transaction path is confirmed through a named block range, that a cluster association is a medium-confidence heuristic supported by two independent patterns, and that beneficial ownership cannot be established without service records. This wording is more useful than declaring the entire report either “accurate” or “inaccurate.”
Apply a higher bar to high-stakes decisions
For a low-impact monitoring alert, a well-calibrated score may be sufficient to prioritize manual review. For an account freeze, regulatory filing, litigation opinion, or attribution published outside the organization, require independent reproduction, preserved exhibits, source characterization, and documented sign-off. Separate the analyst who generates the lead from the reviewer who approves the conclusion when practical.
Keep the original report, raw exports, software and dataset versions, query history, label snapshots, and review notes together. Analytics systems change: labels are corrected, models are retrained, nodes are reindexed, and new chain data appears. A future reviewer should be able to determine not only what the report said, but what the analyst could have known at that time.
What a trustworthy report looks like
A trustworthy report is specific about scope, candid about blind spots, and modest about inference. It lets a reviewer move from a conclusion to an address, transaction, block, data source, transformation, and confidence assessment. It distinguishes the public ledger from the analytics layer added on top of it. The maxim “Don’t trust, verify” is especially appropriate here: verify the ledger facts, test the transformations, challenge the attribution, and preserve the evidence before relying on the result.
