Do not judge a bank by its headline earnings per share alone. Before deciding whether its shares merit further consideration, trace how the quarter’s profit was produced, examine net interest income and funding, test credit quality, and check capital and balance-sheet trends. Compare the bank with its own prior periods and genuinely similar peers using aligned definitions. A strong quarter is evidence to assess—not a buy signal by itself.

Start with the reporting period and the bank’s business mix

Before comparing numbers, establish what the bank does and exactly which period the figures cover. A quarter-over-quarter change, a year-over-year comparison, and a year-to-date total answer different questions. A seasonal movement or a change in the bank’s portfolio can make an otherwise neat comparison misleading.

Identify what changed during the period

  • Note the quarter and year, and whether each figure is for one quarter or a longer period.
  • Review the bank’s main business lines and material changes to its loan, deposit, or securities portfolios.
  • Look for mergers, acquisitions, portfolio sales, or other changes that affect what is being compared.
  • When comparing with peers, check whether their reporting periods and business mixes are sufficiently similar.

The issuer’s SEC filing and investor materials provide company-specific detail. The FDIC’s Quarterly Banking Profile is useful for industry context on earnings, lending, deposits, and asset quality, but it is an aggregate benchmark—not a substitute for reading the bank’s own disclosures. The FDIC says the profile is published about 55 days after quarter-end; that is its stated cadence, not a guaranteed release date for every edition.

A useful order is to read the filing’s financial statements first, then the management discussion and any notes that explain changes in balances, definitions, or estimates. Investor presentations can help locate management’s key explanations, but verify important figures and adjustments against the filing. Keep a simple record of the period, units, and whether a figure is quarterly, year-to-date, or an end-of-period balance. Mixing an income measure for three months with a balance-sheet figure at quarter-end can lead to an invalid conclusion.

Reconstruct earnings instead of stopping at EPS

Headline EPS can rise or fall for reasons that say little about the durability of the bank’s ordinary business. Read the income statement and management’s discussion to see how net interest income, noninterest income, noninterest expense, and the provision for credit losses contributed to the result. Ask whether revenue improved, costs changed, or credit costs moved—and whether any of those changes are likely to recur.

Separate recurring operations from unusual items

Mark gains, restructuring charges, acquisition effects, unusual legal or other expenses, and unusually large provisions or reversals. A one-off gain can lift reported profit without improving ongoing revenue; a one-off charge can depress it without necessarily showing that the underlying business weakened. The filing should explain material items. If it does not give enough detail to determine whether an item is recurring, do not treat it as settled evidence of a trend.

Check the full bridge from revenue to earnings

  • Net interest income: Compare interest earned on assets with interest paid on funding, then examine the volume, pricing, and mix behind any change.
  • Noninterest income: Identify the fee or other revenue sources that changed, and whether the movement appears ongoing or tied to a specific event.
  • Noninterest expense: Compare expense growth with revenue growth and look for disclosed drivers such as compensation, technology, or integration costs.
  • Credit-loss provision: Determine how the expense or reversal affected earnings, then compare it with reported portfolio performance and management’s stated expectations.

Do not assume that faster earnings growth means credit quality improved: a lower provision can raise profit even while other measures of loan performance warrant attention. Likewise, higher expenses do not by themselves prove that efficiency deteriorated if revenue or business activity also changed. Federal Reserve commentary on large-bank quarterly results illustrates how components can move in opposite directions: in the period it discussed, revenue growth and lower provisions outweighed higher expenses.

Treat adjusted earnings as supplemental

If management presents adjusted or “underlying” results, read the reconciliation to the corresponding GAAP figures. Check which items were removed, whether similar costs recur in multiple periods, and whether the bank applies the same approach across the periods you are comparing. An adjusted figure is not automatically more informative or more comparable merely because it excludes selected costs.

To test whether the earnings story hangs together, ask what changed in each major line and whether management’s explanation is consistent with the disclosed balances and trends. For example, loan growth alone does not establish stronger interest income if asset yields, funding costs, or mix moved unfavorably. A lower provision is a contributor to profit, but it is not a substitute for evidence about delinquencies, nonperforming loans, or charge-offs. Treat each component as part of a bridge, not as a stand-alone verdict.

Read net interest income, margin, and rate sensitivity together

Net interest income is the difference between interest income and interest expense. Net interest margin (NIM) relates net interest income to average earning assets. The Federal Reserve describes NIM as the difference between interest income and interest expense relative to interest-earning assets. Neither figure explains itself: consider asset yields, funding costs, balance-sheet composition, and the bank’s calculation and presentation conventions.

Understand what can move NIM

A margin can change when loans or securities reprice, when deposit costs rise or fall, or when the bank’s mix of assets and liabilities shifts. Growth in lower-yielding assets, changes in noninterest-bearing deposits, or a different balance of fixed- and floating-rate assets may also affect how results compare. A single margin figure cannot show which factor was responsible. Read the bank’s discussion of yields, costs, balances, and mix alongside the reported margin.

Definitions matter as well. For example, KeyCorp’s Form 10-Q for the period ended June 30, 2026, filed with the SEC, explains that net interest income can be affected by the volume, pricing, mix, and maturity of earning assets and interest-bearing liabilities; noninterest-bearing deposits and equity; derivatives; interest rates and competition; asset quality; and fair-value accounting for acquired assets and liabilities. That filing also presents net interest income on a tax-equivalent basis to improve comparability between taxable and tax-exempt income. This is an issuer-specific example, not a universal presentation rule. Check the bank’s own definitions and any reconciliation before comparing it with another bank or period.

Distinguish reported results from modeled scenarios

Review management’s explanation of deposit repricing, securities maturities, fixed- versus floating-rate assets, and modeled sensitivity to interest-rate changes. A sensitivity analysis describes the result under stated assumptions; it is not a forecast that rates will move as assumed or that the bank will realize the modeled outcome. Note the assumptions and read the scenario as one risk lens rather than as a prediction.

When comparing reported NIM, check whether both figures use the same basis and period. If one issuer reports a tax-equivalent measure and another does not, the values may not be directly comparable. Also distinguish an average-balance ratio from a quarter-end balance: the former summarizes activity across a period, while the latter is a snapshot. If a bank changes its presentation or supplies a reconciliation, note that change rather than assuming the new figure can be lined up mechanically with older figures.

Test asset quality and credit costs using several measures

No single credit metric tells you whether a bank’s loan book is healthy. Review delinquencies, nonperforming loans, charge-offs, the provision for credit losses, and the allowance for credit losses together. Where disclosures permit, break the portfolio down by loan type and geography: a stable aggregate can obscure deterioration in a particular segment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep provisions, charge-offs, and the allowance distinct

  • Provision: An expense or reversal recorded for the period that affects reported earnings.
  • Charge-off: A loan amount recorded as uncollectible; it reflects a realized loss recognition, not a forecast of all future losses.
  • Allowance: A balance-sheet estimate for credit losses. Its size and movement need to be considered alongside portfolio composition and the bank’s stated outlook.

These measures are related, but they are not interchangeable. A larger allowance does not automatically indicate either a safer bank or a weaker one. Compare it with the loans it covers and the bank’s explanation of expected losses, assumptions, and portfolio changes. A low provision in one quarter is not proof that losses will remain low.

Look beneath portfolio averages

Inspect disclosed trends in underwriting, criticized or classified assets, collateral values, and management assumptions. Consider whether a concentration in one loan category or geography could affect the bank differently from its peers. The Federal Reserve has discussed commercial real estate and consumer exposures as areas of concern in prior banking-conditions reports and tracked nonperforming-loan, loan-loss, and reserve ratios in its 2025 report. Those observations are reasons to examine the bank’s actual exposures, not evidence that every bank has the same risks.

Read the credit figures as a sequence. A change in the allowance may reflect a change in portfolio size or composition, a revised loss outlook, or other assumptions described by management; it does not tell you on its own which explanation applies. Look for the bank’s account of underwriting and problem assets alongside the reported loss measures. Then ask whether the explanation fits the direction of delinquencies, nonperforming loans, and charge-offs. If different indicators point in different directions, preserve that uncertainty rather than letting one favorable metric settle the question.

Assess deposits, liquidity, and the cost of funding

Read deposit balances and composition alongside loan growth, deposit costs, and wholesale borrowings. A bank that grows loans faster than deposits may need other funding or may face more pressure to compete for deposits. Growth by itself is not a complete sign of strength: its implications depend on funding mix, cost, and liquidity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check funding composition and available liquidity

Look for disclosures about deposit concentration and uninsured deposits where available, as well as cash, available liquidity, securities valuation, and borrowing capacity. Consider whether the bank depends on a narrow source of deposits or on funding that may become more expensive. Changes in the amount of deposits matter, but so do the types of deposits and their cost.

In its discussion of a sample of large banks in 2025 Q3, the Federal Reserve reported that deposits rose at most banks while loan growth outpaced deposit growth. This dated sample illustrates why both sides of the balance sheet matter; it does not establish the position of any particular bank today. Rising funding costs can squeeze the spread between yields on earning assets and the cost of liabilities, even when loans are growing.

For the bank under review, check whether deposit growth is broad or concentrated, and whether management describes changes in the cost or composition of deposits. If loans are growing faster than deposits, look at how the bank says it is funding that growth, including any change in wholesale borrowings. Consider those disclosures together with available liquidity and securities valuation rather than treating a single funding ratio or growth rate as a complete liquidity assessment. These details help explain why the same loan-growth rate could have different implications for two banks.

Review capital, risk-weighted assets, and distributions

Read Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) and other applicable regulatory capital ratios together with risk-weighted-asset growth, earnings, dividends, and share repurchases. A ratio provides a view of loss-absorbing capacity under regulatory measures, but it is not a guarantee against losses. Its meaning depends on the bank’s risks, the assets and exposures behind the ratio, and how the balance sheet is changing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Put the reported ratio in context

The Federal Reserve reported a median CET1 ratio of 11.0% for its sample of large banks at the end of 2025 Q3. The figure is a dated sample statistic—not a threshold, target, or claim about an individual bank. The Federal Reserve also noted that earnings, shareholder distributions, and growth in risk-weighted assets influence quarter-to-quarter capital ratios. When comparing a bank over time, check whether its ratio moved because capital changed, risk-weighted assets grew or shrank, or both.

Regulatory ratios are not interchangeable with tangible common equity or other non-GAAP measures. Read the definitions and issuer reconciliations rather than treating similarly named figures as equivalent. Consider whether earnings are adding to capital and how dividends or repurchases interact with growth and risk; the ratio alone does not answer those questions.

Distributions belong in the capital discussion because dividends and repurchases affect the capital available after shareholder returns, while growth in risk-weighted assets also influences the reported ratio. A quarter’s earnings may support capital generation, but look at the actual ratio movement and the bank’s disclosures rather than inferring the result from net income alone. Do not use the Federal Reserve’s sample median as a pass/fail cutoff for an individual institution.

Compare the bank with its own history and suitable peers

First compare the bank with its own prior quarter and year-ago quarter, then select peers with reasonably similar scale, business mix, and geography. Align the periods and definitions before drawing conclusions. A bank that earns a different share of revenue from fees, or has a different loan portfolio, may not be meaningfully comparable just because it is similar in size.

Capital Regulatory ratios, risk-weighted assets, earnings, and distributions What is changing the bank’s reported capital position?

The FDIC publishes industry measures and groups institutions by size; the Federal Reserve’s reported large-bank results are based on a defined sample. These sources can help establish context, but aggregate and sample results cannot replace company-specific analysis. Avoid comparing an issuer’s tax-equivalent figure with a peer’s differently defined number unless you can align the basis.

Use a small peer group selected for relevant similarities, not a broad collection chosen only because the institutions are familiar or publicly traded. Check whether differences in scale, business mix, geography, and portfolio exposures could explain diverging results. The objective is not to rank every bank on a single ratio; it is to see whether the bank’s direction and drivers are unusual relative to credible comparisons. When a definition or reporting period cannot be aligned, label the comparison as limited or leave it out.

Turn the quarter into a decision framework

A disciplined review should leave you with a short list of supported observations and unresolved questions—not a conclusion based on one impressive or disappointing headline. For each apparent improvement, identify the specific driver and decide whether the filing supports treating it as durable. If the driver is unclear, record that uncertainty rather than filling the gap with an assumption.

  1. Set the comparison: Write down the period, business mix, and any material balance-sheet or portfolio changes.
  2. Explain earnings: Trace net interest income, noninterest income, expenses, and credit provisions to reported profit; flag unusual items and reconcile adjusted measures.
  3. Test the margin: Identify the movement in yields, funding costs, volumes, or mix, and check whether the reported basis matches the comparison.
  4. Review credit: Assess multiple asset-quality measures and material portfolio exposures rather than relying on a single reserve or loss ratio.
  5. Check funding and capital: Compare deposit and loan trends, funding costs, liquidity disclosures, capital ratios, risk-weighted assets, and distributions.
  6. Compare fairly: Use aligned periods and definitions for the bank’s own history and suitable peers, and distinguish company results from industry context.
  7. Separate company performance from share value: Quarterly results do not establish whether the current share price is attractive. Valuation, market expectations, risk tolerance, and personal circumstances also matter.

The reviewed official materials provide a framework for analyzing quarterly results; they do not establish a buy decision for a particular bank or investor. A result can be operationally strong while still requiring a separate assessment of valuation and suitability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which documents should I read first when evaluating a bank’s quarterly results?

Start with the bank’s SEC filing and investor materials for issuer-specific figures, definitions, and explanations. Read the financial statements and management discussion, then check notes or reconciliations for material changes and adjusted measures. The FDIC’s Quarterly Banking Profile and Federal Reserve reports can provide industry or sample context, but they do not replace the bank’s own disclosures.

Is a higher net interest margin always a sign of a better quarter?

No. NIM relates net interest income to average earning assets, and it can move because of asset yields, funding costs, balance-sheet mix, and volumes. Review those drivers and the bank’s calculation basis. A comparison can mislead if periods or presentation conventions—such as tax-equivalent reporting—are not aligned.

What is the difference between a provision, a charge-off, and an allowance?

A provision is an expense or reversal recorded for the period and affects earnings. A charge-off records a loan amount as uncollectible. The allowance is a balance-sheet estimate for credit losses. They are related but not interchangeable, and none alone gives a complete picture of future losses or portfolio quality.

How should I interpret loan growth that is faster than deposit growth?

Treat it as a prompt to examine funding, not as proof of strength or distress. Compare deposit composition and costs, wholesale borrowings, liquidity, and the bank’s explanation of how it is funding loan growth. The Federal Reserve reported this pattern in its sample of large banks in 2025 Q3, but that dated sample does not establish an individual bank’s current position.

Does the Federal Reserve’s 11.0% median CET1 ratio set a good target for every bank?

No. It was the median for a defined sample of large banks at the end of 2025 Q3, not a universal target or threshold. Compare an individual bank’s ratio with its own history and consider risk-weighted assets, earnings, distributions, and balance-sheet risks.

If a bank reports a strong quarter, does that mean its shares are a buy?

No. Quarterly results help assess company performance, but they do not establish whether the share price is attractive. Valuation, market expectations, risk tolerance, and personal circumstances require a separate assessment. This checklist does not make a recommendation about a particular bank.

The Bottom Line

Evaluate the drivers behind earnings, NIM, credit costs, deposits, liquidity, and capital; compare only aligned periods and genuinely similar banks. Industry statistics are context, not a substitute for issuer filings, and a strong quarter alone cannot establish that a bank’s shares are a buy.
