There is no reliable “visitors per VPS” conversion. A site with 100,000 cached page views can use fewer resources than a store with 10,000 dynamic visits, because concurrent requests, database work, background jobs, response size and caching determine load. Estimate your VPS by measuring peak simultaneous work, assigning CPU, memory, storage and network capacity to that workload, then validating the choice under realistic traffic.

Why monthly visitors are a poor sizing metric

Monthly visitors describe total demand over a long period, while a VPS fails during short periods of concentrated work. Ten thousand visits spread evenly through a month are usually easier than 500 visitors arriving during a product launch. A single visit may also trigger several requests for HTML, images, scripts, API calls and database queries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate these factors before choosing a plan:

  • Concurrency: how many requests, users or jobs are active at the same time.
  • Request type: a cached static page is much cheaper than a personalized page, search query, checkout operation or report.
  • Application work: PHP, Node.js, Python, Java, a CMS, an API and any workers compete for the same resources.
  • Stateful services: databases, object caches, queues and search indexes need memory and fast storage even when web traffic appears moderate.
  • Background activity: backups, image resizing, imports, cron jobs, email queues and analytics can run during your busiest period.
  • Response size and transfer: large images, downloads, video and API payloads consume storage throughput and network capacity.

HostKontor’s explanation is useful here: “How many visitors can this server handle?” has no useful answer without context. Treat any fixed visitors-per-plan claim as a marketing estimate unless it states the application, cache behavior, concurrency and test conditions.

Describe the complete workload first

Map every service on the VPS

Write down what will run before selecting a size. Include the operating system, web server, runtime, CMS or application, database engine, object cache, queue workers, control panel, monitoring agent, scheduled tasks, image-processing tools and backup software. Note whether each service is always running or starts only during a job.

For each service, record its normal and peak behavior. A database may be quiet for brochure pages but become the bottleneck for search, filtering or checkout. A queue worker may be idle most of the day and then consume every available core during an import. A control panel and backup process need memory even though they do not appear in page-view analytics.

Classify requests as cached or dynamic

Count cacheable and uncached traffic separately. A reverse-proxy or application cache can serve a page without starting a new application worker or querying the database. Dynamic requests bypassing that cache may execute templates, authentication, recommendations and multiple queries.

List expensive endpoints individually: login, search, catalog filters, carts, checkout, dashboards, file uploads, exports and API methods. Their average response time and database cost matter more than the average page view.

Include simultaneous jobs

Identify tasks that overlap with user traffic. Examples include nightly backups, database maintenance, log rotation, thumbnail generation, feed imports, scheduled publishing and deployment builds. Size for the busiest realistic overlap, or schedule heavy work outside peak periods and verify that the schedule is actually respected.

Estimate peak concurrency from evidence

Use analytics for the busy minute

Export the busiest minutes from your analytics platform and access logs rather than relying on a monthly average. Record requests per second or per minute, simultaneous active users, response times, status codes and the URLs receiving the traffic. Distinguish human page views from crawlers, health checks, webhooks and asset requests.

Peak concurrent users are not identical to concurrent server requests. A browser may keep a page open while making only occasional requests, while a short API burst can create many simultaneous workers. Use server metrics to connect the two measurements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measure the expensive path

For each high-cost endpoint, capture request rate, median and high-percentile latency, database time, external-service time and error rate. A low request count can still exhaust CPU if each request performs image manipulation or a complex query. Conversely, a high count of cache hits may have little application cost.

Model a new site

For a new website, create a realistic dataset: representative posts, products, users, orders, images and permissions. Generate traffic that follows expected journeys instead of requesting the home page repeatedly. Include login, search, writes, API calls, cache misses, webhooks and scheduled jobs. Increase load until latency or errors exceed your target, then repeat after enabling the production cache configuration.

Do not treat a synthetic result as a guarantee. It is useful only when the content, queries, cache rules and traffic mix resemble production.

Allocate the four main VPS resources

DigitalOcean describes a Droplet as an allocation of CPU, RAM, disk storage and network bandwidth. Those dimensions are separate: a plan with more disk does not automatically provide more CPU, and a larger network port does not remove database or storage limits. Its current Basic family documentation lists configurations from 1 to 8 vCPUs and 1 to 32 GB of RAM, illustrating that a plan menu is an allocation range, not a visitor guarantee.

CPU: match sustained work and burst behavior

CPU handles application execution, encryption, compression, query processing, image transforms and background jobs. Shared CPU is generally appropriate for bursty, low-intensity sites whose work is intermittent. Dedicated CPU is preferable when compute is sustained or predictable performance matters, such as busy application servers, frequent builds, media processing or high-volume API work.

Count cores only after measuring utilization and queueing. One fast core can outperform several constrained cores for a mostly single-threaded application, while parallel workers and imports benefit from additional cores. Check whether the provider specifies dedicated or shared scheduling and whether “burstable” performance can fall during host contention.

RAM: budget for the working set before adding cores

Memory must cover the operating system, web server, application workers, database working set, object cache, queues, control panel and monitoring, plus safety headroom. Leave enough room for traffic spikes and maintenance tasks. A database that repeatedly evicts pages from memory can be slow even when CPU utilization is low.

Watch swap activity. Swapping means the system is using disk as emergency memory and often causes severe latency. If memory pressure and swap are high while CPU is idle, adding vCPUs will not fix the bottleneck; add RAM, reduce worker counts, shrink caches, optimize queries or move a stateful service elsewhere. Swap can prevent an immediate crash, but it is not a substitute for adequate memory.

Storage: capacity and performance are different

Calculate capacity for application code, uploaded media, database files, logs, temporary files, package caches and local backups. Keep free space for growth and maintenance; a nearly full volume can fail writes and database operations.

Evaluate latency and IOPS separately from gigabytes. SSD or NVMe storage is generally better suited to databases, queues and write-heavy workloads than slower storage. A large disk with poor I/O can still produce high database latency. Confirm whether the advertised storage is local, network-attached, redundant, snapshot-capable and expandable.

Network: transfer quota is not port speed

Estimate monthly transfer with this model:

monthly transfer ≈ average response or page weight × page views + assets + API payloads + retries + downloads + backups

Use separate allowances for media downloads, software updates, replication and backup copies. Compare the result with the plan’s monthly transfer quota, then check its port throughput and connection limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft’s Azure documentation expresses VM network throughput in megabits per second and explains that the documented allocation applies to outbound traffic. Effective throughput can still be lower when CPU, storage or the remote client is the limiting factor. A transfer quota and a port measured in Mbps answer different questions.

Practical starting bands

The following are planning heuristics, not capacity guarantees. Confirm them with measured peak concurrency and production-like tests.

Workload Initial allocation to investigate What requires validation
Cached brochure or blog site 1–2 shared vCPU; 2–4 GB RAM; SSD sized for code, media, logs and backups Cache-hit ratio, traffic bursts, image delivery and transfer quota
Typical CMS with database and moderate traffic 2–4 vCPU; 4–8 GB RAM; SSD or NVMe Peak uncached requests, database working set, plugins and scheduled jobs
WooCommerce or another dynamic application 2–4 or more dedicated vCPU; 8 GB or more RAM; fast SSD or NVMe Checkout peaks, database locks, object cache, queues and payment/API latency
Media or download-heavy site Transfer allowance, outbound throughput and fast storage take priority; CPU and RAM depend on whether the VPS transcodes File size distribution, concurrent downloads, encoding load and CDN or object-storage offload

These bands intentionally do not state visitor counts. No authoritative universal visitors-to-vCPU conversion establishes one, and a vendor’s plan table is not proof of how many visitors a site can serve.

A repeatable sizing procedure

  1. Inventory the stack. List the web server, runtime, CMS or API, database, cache, workers, control panel, scheduled jobs, image tools and backup method.
  2. Classify traffic. Separate cache hits, dynamic page requests, writes, API calls, downloads, bots and health checks. Identify expensive URLs.
  3. Choose a peak scenario. Combine the busiest observed minute, expected growth and any background jobs that overlap. For a new site, build a representative dataset and load test it.
  4. Set memory requirements. Estimate the operating system, database, cache and worker footprints first. Add headroom and reject plans that would rely on continuous swap.
  5. Set CPU requirements. Determine whether the workload is bursty or sustained, mostly single-threaded or parallel, and whether shared-CPU variability is acceptable.
  6. Set storage requirements. Add code, media, database, logs, temporary files and backups; reserve free space and select SSD or NVMe when latency matters.
  7. Set network requirements. Calculate transfer, inspect outbound Mbps, connection and flow limits, and decide whether a CDN or object storage should serve large files.
  8. Choose a plan with headroom. Compare region and latency, IPv4/IPv6, backup and recovery options, monitoring, upgrade path and total recurring cost—not only headline RAM.
  9. Benchmark and observe. Run realistic traffic, then monitor normal and peak periods before declaring the size sufficient.

What to monitor after deployment

Use a dashboard that shows both averages and peaks. Record the time range and traffic conditions whenever you investigate a problem.

  • CPU utilization and load average: sustained saturation, runnable queues or rising latency indicate CPU pressure.
  • Memory available, cache and swap: falling available memory, reclaim activity and swap-in or swap-out indicate memory pressure.
  • Disk latency, I/O wait and throughput: high wait with modest CPU points toward storage or database contention.
  • Storage fill: alert before logs, temporary files or database growth consume the volume.
  • Request latency and errors: track high-percentile latency, timeouts, 4xx and 5xx responses by endpoint.
  • Network transfer and flows: compare outbound usage with quota, Mbps, concurrent connections and provider flow limits.
  • Queue depth and job duration: a growing queue means workers cannot finish jobs as quickly as they arrive.

Azure recommends benchmarking against expected traffic patterns and scaling when limits are reached. Apply the same principle to a single VPS: test the workload you actually run, not an abstract request counter.

Match the symptom to the resize

Observed constraint Likely action Also check
Sustained CPU saturation or request queueing Add faster or more vCPU; consider dedicated CPU Slow queries, inefficient code, compression and runaway jobs
Low available memory, frequent swap or worker kills Add RAM; reduce worker and cache footprints Memory leaks, oversized database settings and backup overlap
High I/O wait or database latency Move to faster SSD/NVMe or add effective caching Indexes, checkpoint behavior, noisy jobs and storage fullness
Transfer quota or outbound throughput exhausted Increase allowance or offload static files to a CDN or object storage Large responses, retries, bots and backup traffic
Connection or flow limits reached Change architecture or scale horizontally Keep-alive settings, load-balancer behavior and connection leaks
Only one endpoint is slow Optimize that route, query or external dependency before resizing Cache misses, locks and third-party service latency

Resize the constrained resource instead of buying a larger plan indiscriminately. If CPU, memory, storage and network are all close to their limits, a larger VPS may be a short-term step; separating the database, adding replicas, introducing a queue or scaling out can be the durable solution.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How the common workloads differ

WordPress and other CMS sites

A heavily cached editorial site may be limited mainly by transfer and cache misses, while an uncached or plugin-heavy installation depends on PHP worker memory, database queries and cron jobs. Measure logged-in pages, search, previews, scheduled publishing and backup overlap rather than counting anonymous page views alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

WooCommerce and transactional stores

Catalog browsing can be cacheable, but carts, account pages, inventory checks and checkout are dynamic. Checkout peaks also create writes, locks, payment calls and emails. Give the database and object cache deliberate memory, use fast storage, and load-test the complete purchase path with realistic product and order data.

APIs and background workers

API sizing depends on payload size, authentication, serialization, query cost, rate limits and concurrency. Separate stateless web processes from workers when jobs can block requests. Measure queue depth and job duration, not just HTTP requests, and account for retries and webhook bursts.

Media and download delivery

Serving files can exhaust transfer, outbound throughput or storage before CPU becomes important. If the VPS transcodes video or creates thumbnails, CPU and temporary-disk requirements rise sharply. Offload large, cacheable objects to a CDN or object-storage service when the transfer profile makes that cheaper and more reliable.

Common sizing mistakes and corrections

Buying by monthly visitors alone

Correction: use the busiest minute, concurrent requests and dynamic-request mix. Keep monthly visitors for forecasting growth and transfer, not as a capacity formula.

Adding CPU when the database is swapping

Correction: inspect memory and swap first. Add RAM or reduce resident working sets before adding cores.

Ignoring backups and maintenance

Correction: include their CPU, I/O, storage and transfer impact, or schedule and isolate them so the overlap is controlled.

Confusing disk size with disk speed

Correction: evaluate latency and IOPS for the database and queue workload, then reserve capacity for growth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Testing only cached home-page requests

Correction: test cache misses, logins, searches, writes, checkout, APIs, downloads and realistic background jobs.

Assuming a larger plan fixes every limit

Correction: identify whether CPU, RAM, I/O, transfer, connections or application design is the actual constraint. Optimize or change architecture when vertical scaling stops addressing the symptom.

When to scale up or scale out

Scaling up—moving to a larger VPS—is simplest when one resource is constrained and the application is not yet distributed. It can provide more memory for a database, more dedicated CPU for sustained compute or faster storage for write-heavy work.

Scale out when connection rates, availability requirements, geographic latency or independent workloads exceed what one machine should handle. A separate database, worker tier, cache, load balancer, CDN or object-storage layer can prevent one component from starving the rest. Design backups and recovery before adding machines; more servers increase operational complexity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Start with the smallest VPS that can hold the full application working set and its peak concurrent workload without sustained CPU queueing, swapping, dangerous disk fullness or network exhaustion. Use the practical bands as a starting hypothesis, benchmark realistic traffic, monitor every resource and resize the bottleneck you can demonstrate. That process is more dependable than any universal claim about how many visitors a VPS can handle.
