The realistic cost of a luxury car is not its sticker price. For a defensible estimate, choose an ownership period—five years is a useful standard—then add depreciation, financing interest or a clearly stated cash assumption, taxes and fees, insurance, fuel, scheduled maintenance, and repairs. Use your location, mileage, coverage, credit, and the exact trim wherever possible. A calculator such as Edmunds’ True Cost to Own (TCO) can make vehicle comparisons consistent, but Edmunds Help Center cautions that “TCO is a comparative tool, not a predictive tool.”
The method below gives you a repeatable five-year estimate and shows how to compare two luxury cars without confusing a publisher’s assumptions with your personal budget.
What “total cost of ownership” includes
Total cost of ownership (TCO) measures the money a vehicle consumes over a defined period, rather than the amount on the window sticker. For a five-year estimate, use this formula:

The purchase principal is represented by the vehicle’s loss of value. Do not add every loan payment to depreciation, because that counts the principal twice. Add the interest charged by the loan separately. If you pay cash, state whether you exclude financing or include an opportunity-cost assumption.
- Depreciation: what you pay (or the vehicle’s value at purchase) minus its expected resale value at the end of the period.
- Financing: interest based on your amount financed, annual percentage rate (APR), down payment, and term. Some publisher calculators also estimate the opportunity cost of cash.
- Taxes and fees: sales or use tax, destination and options where applicable, registration, title, and transaction fees.
- Insurance: premiums for the exact model and trim with the coverage you intend to carry.
- Fuel: expected miles, realistic fuel economy, fuel grade, and local prices.
- Maintenance: scheduled services specified for the vehicle.
- Repairs: unscheduled work, separate from routine maintenance.
Edmunds and Kelley Blue Book (KBB) both treat depreciation as a core cost and separate maintenance from repairs. Their estimates are useful for comparing vehicles on the same basis, but neither is a guarantee of your eventual bill.
1. Fix the comparison period and mileage first
Write the horizon at the top of your worksheet before collecting prices. Five years and 15,000 miles per year are common comparison assumptions, including Edmunds’ published TCO framework. That framework assumes a traditional financed purchase, 10% down, a 60-month loan, and above-average credit.

Those assumptions are not universal. If you drive 8,000 miles annually, keep a car for eight years, or plan to lease, change the model rather than silently applying the default.
Use the same inputs for every candidate
- Ownership period, such as 60 months.
- Annual and total miles.
- Purchase date and model year.
- Location for tax, registration, fuel, and insurance.
- Purchase method, down payment, APR, and loan term.
- Expected condition and resale timing.
A comparison is meaningful only when both cars are measured over the same horizon and expected mileage. A five-year estimate for one vehicle cannot fairly be compared with a three-year estimate for another.
2. Establish the actual purchase cost
Begin with the negotiated transaction price for the exact vehicle, not a national list price. Add destination charges and options where applicable. Then add your state and local sales or use tax, title and registration charges, and other transaction fees.

Edmunds’ methodology notes that taxes and fees vary by state, vehicle, and transaction. Treat a calculator’s figure as a comparison input until you replace it with your local numbers.

Depreciation = purchase value − projected resale value at the end of the horizon.
For a five-year estimate, obtain a resale or trade-in estimate for the exact model year, trim, drivetrain, mileage, condition, and location. Keep those variables aligned when comparing cars. A high-performance trim, unusual options, accident history, or mileage well above your plan can materially change the result.
Build a resale range instead of one false-precision number
- Choose a base resale estimate for the planned mileage and condition.
- Create a lower resale case for weaker market demand, poorer condition, or higher mileage.
- Create a higher resale case for stronger demand and unusually good condition.
- Subtract each resale value from the same purchase value.
Report the range and the assumptions. A resale estimate is not a promise: market prices, supply, equipment preferences, and the car’s condition at sale can all change.

For a financed purchase, record the amount financed, APR, down payment, and term. Use your lender’s amortization schedule or a loan calculator to identify total interest over the ownership period. If you sell before the loan ends, also check the projected payoff balance; the remaining principal affects the cash you receive from the sale, but it is not an additional depreciation charge.
Cash purchase treatment
A cash estimate can be presented in either of two transparent ways:
- Cash-only view: show no loan interest and state that financing is excluded.
- Opportunity-cost view: assign a stated return assumption to the money tied up in the vehicle. Edmunds says its TCO includes financing cost even when a buyer does not finance, as an estimated opportunity cost.
Do not combine a full series of loan payments with depreciation. Loan principal purchases an asset; depreciation measures the asset’s value loss. The financing cost to add is interest (or a clearly labeled opportunity-cost estimate).
5. Get an insurance quote for your situation
Insurance can differ more than buyers expect because premiums depend on the driver’s location, record, age, claims history, coverage limits, deductible, annual mileage, garaging, and the exact vehicle. Request quotes using the exact model and trim, your address, intended use, and the coverage you will actually carry.
Publisher averages are useful for comparing candidate cars, not for budgeting your policy. Replace them with personal quotes whenever possible. Record whether each quote is monthly or annual, whether taxes or fees are included, and whether it is an introductory or recurring price.

6. Calculate fuel from your driving pattern
Fuel cost is:
Annual fuel cost = annual miles ÷ realistic miles per gallon × local price per gallon.
Multiply the annual result by the number of years, then adjust for any expected change in mileage or fuel prices. Use the exact powertrain and the fuel grade it requires or recommends.
Adjust the assumptions that calculators use
Edmunds’ method uses revised EPA ratings, assumes 45% highway and 55% city driving, and uses a moving average of state fuel prices. It uses premium fuel when the manufacturer recommends or requires it. If your commute is mostly city driving, you regularly tow, idle in traffic, or have access to different local prices, replace those inputs.

- Use your expected annual miles, not the national default.
- Use combined, city, or highway efficiency that matches your driving mix.
- Price the required or recommended fuel in your area.
- Run a higher-price scenario if fuel is a significant part of your budget.
7. Separate scheduled maintenance from repairs
Maintenance and repairs are different budget lines. Maintenance is work specified by the owner’s manual—such as fluids, filters, inspections, and scheduled services. Repairs are unscheduled failures or wear-related work outside the routine schedule.
How to estimate maintenance
- Read the exact owner’s manual for the model, engine, drivetrain, and service market.
- List each service due during your ownership period and its interval.
- Obtain prices from a suitable dealer or qualified independent shop in your area.
- Include consumables and time-based items that mileage alone will not trigger.
- Check the warranty and any included maintenance plan, noting its duration and exclusions.
How to handle repairs
Use model-specific reliability information or a calculator estimate only as a planning input. Vehicle age, condition, mileage, warranty coverage, and repair-shop rates matter. Do not present one repair allowance as universal for every luxury car. A new vehicle under warranty and an older used example should have different repair scenarios.
8. Add the categories and show your assumptions
Once each line is populated, add the seven categories. Keep a worksheet that shows both the dollar amount and the source or assumption:

Divide the five-year total by 60 for an average monthly ownership cost. This monthly figure is a budgeting aid, not a bill: depreciation and resale occur unevenly, and repairs may arrive in a single large invoice.
Published examples: use them as illustrations, not promises
Edmunds displayed a five-year total of $160,186 for the 2026 Land Rover Range Rover P400 SE, accessed in 2026. Its displayed breakdown was:

These are Edmunds estimates under its stated assumptions, not a claim about every Range Rover owner. Recalculate them for your purchase price, location, mileage, insurance, financing, and resale expectation.
Edmunds also displayed a five-year total of $112,484 for the 2027 BMW X7, accessed in 2026. The consulted page did not state a component breakdown for that figure here, so do not compare the total with another vehicle unless you verify the date, trim, region, mileage, and assumptions for both.
How to compare two luxury cars fairly
- Lock the scenario: use the same five-year horizon, annual miles, purchase date, location, and condition at resale.
- Collect exact prices: use the same treatment of destination, options, taxes, title, registration, and fees.
- Replace generic inputs: obtain insurance quotes and local fuel prices for each exact powertrain.
- Use matching resale logic: apply comparable mileage and condition assumptions to each model.
- Separate maintenance and repairs: account for each warranty and service schedule independently.
- Run sensitivity cases: test lower resale, higher fuel prices, more miles, and a higher APR.
- Compare both total and pattern: one car may have a lower total but greater exposure to fuel or repairs; another may lose more value but cost less to operate.
Present personalized quotes separately from calculator estimates. Label every number with its date, geography, term, and whether it recurs.

A single total can hide the assumptions that drive the result. Create at least three scenarios:
Base case
Use your expected miles, negotiated price, current quoted APR, personal insurance quote, local fuel price, scheduled maintenance, and a central resale estimate.
Higher-cost case
Use lower resale, more annual miles, higher fuel prices, a higher financing rate, and a repair allowance appropriate to an older or out-of-warranty vehicle. Keep each changed assumption visible so you know what caused the increase.
Lower-cost case
Use fewer miles, a stronger resale outcome, lower-cost insurance coverage that still meets your needs, and confirmed warranty or included maintenance. Do not assume a discount or free service unless it is documented for your transaction.
The spread between scenarios is often more useful than a falsely precise single number. It tells you how much financial capacity you need if resale or operating conditions disappoint.

Common estimation mistakes
Looking only at the payment
A low monthly payment can result from a long term, a large down payment, or a balance remaining when you sell. Review total interest, projected payoff, depreciation, and all operating costs.
Using a national average for local costs
Taxes, registration, insurance, fuel, and repair labor are location-sensitive. Replace generic values with your jurisdiction and quotes.
Ignoring fuel requirements
Premium fuel recommendations or requirements can change the result. Match the calculation to the exact engine and fuel grade.
Combining maintenance and repairs
A routine service schedule does not predict an out-of-warranty failure. Keep the lines separate so warranty coverage and vehicle age are visible.
Counting loan principal twice
Do not add all loan payments to depreciation. Add interest separately and account for the asset’s value loss once.
Treating a calculator as a forecast
Edmunds describes TCO as a comparative tool, not a predictive tool. KBB likewise cautions that actual costs and depreciation vary with how a vehicle is driven and each owner’s circumstances.
When to refresh the estimate
Recheck the worksheet immediately before buying and whenever a major input changes. Update vehicle price, APR, taxes, insurance quotes, fuel prices, maintenance pricing, warranty terms, and resale estimates. Edmunds’ API documentation describes estimates as perishable and says they should be dated when displayed.
At purchase, save the buyer’s order, loan disclosure, insurance quote, warranty documents, and service schedule with the worksheet. That record lets you distinguish an assumption that changed from a cost you simply overlooked.
A compact checklist
- Choose and state the ownership horizon.
- Set annual and total miles.
- Record the exact year, trim, powertrain, options, and negotiated price.
- Add destination, taxes, title, registration, and documented fees.
- Estimate resale with matching mileage, condition, model, trim, and location.
- Calculate loan interest from your actual APR, down payment, amount financed, and term—or state the cash treatment.
- Get personal insurance quotes.
- Use local fuel prices, realistic efficiency, driving mix, and required fuel grade.
- Price scheduled maintenance from the owner’s manual and warranty.
- Keep repairs separate and model-specific.
- Run base, higher-cost, and lower-cost scenarios.
- Compare candidates only when their assumptions match.
The Bottom Line
Estimate a luxury car by ownership period, not sticker price: depreciation, financing, taxes and fees, insurance, fuel, maintenance, and repairs all belong in the same worksheet. Personal quotes and local data make the result useful; publisher calculators make comparisons consistent but remain estimates rather than guarantees.
