The most defensible way to estimate a custom-built gaming PC’s resale value is to use several recent completed sales for the exact components and for similar complete systems in the same market. Do not treat the original build cost or a subtotal of today’s new-part prices as the used value. Build a range, adjust for condition and included items, then show both the likely gross sale price and the net amount after fees and seller-paid shipping.
What “worth” should mean in your estimate
A used PC can have several different values, and confusing them is the main reason estimates go wrong:
- Likely transaction price: what a buyer actually pays for a comparable working system, before your selling costs.
- Asking price: the amount you publish to leave room for negotiation. It is not evidence that the market will pay that amount.
- Net proceeds: the transaction price minus marketplace fees and any shipping or packing you pay.
- Part-out value: the combined proceeds from selling the graphics card, processor, memory, storage and other parts separately.
These numbers can differ substantially. A complete tower may be easier to sell than six separate components, while individual parts may attract buyers who do not want your case or power supply. Your final estimate should say which value it represents, the market and currency used, the sale format, the condition assumed, and the date range of the comparisons.

Start with an exact inventory
Write down the machine as if another buyer had to reproduce the configuration. “Core i7 gaming PC” or “RTX system” is not specific enough for a useful comparison. Similar names can hide different generations, VRAM capacities, cooling arrangements and markets.
Record every value-bearing component
- Processor: exact model and generation, including any suffix that changes the specification.
- Graphics card: manufacturer and exact model, VRAM capacity, cooler design and any edition or size distinction shown on the card.
- Motherboard: manufacturer, model and chipset or platform generation.
- Memory: total capacity, number of modules, generation and rated speed when known.
- Storage: each drive’s capacity and type, such as NVMe solid-state, SATA solid-state or hard disk.
- Power supply: make, model and wattage. A generic or unidentified unit should not be represented as equivalent to a documented unit with the same wattage.
- Case and cooling: case model, CPU cooler type, radiator size if applicable and the number of installed fans.
- Accessories and additions: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth cards, extra drives, vertical GPU hardware, original boxes, spare cables, manuals and peripherals included in the sale.
Use the operating system’s hardware information, the motherboard firmware screen, labels on the components and purchase records to verify details. Photograph labels where they are visible. If a specification cannot be confirmed, describe it as unconfirmed rather than silently substituting a similar model.
Document working condition
Note whether the system boots, reaches the operating system, runs reliably and has known faults. Record intermittent crashes, abnormal temperatures, noisy fans, damaged ports, missing panels, cosmetic damage, storage-health warnings and any component that is untested. A working complete machine belongs in a different comparable set from a broken, repair, untested or “for parts” listing.

Also list what the buyer receives. Missing side panels, proprietary cables, antennas, brackets or power cords can reduce the practical value even when the major components are sound. Do not imply that a monitor, keyboard, headset or software license is included unless it will actually transfer with the sale.
Define the market before looking at prices
Choose the country or region where you intend to sell and keep the comparisons in that market whenever possible. UK and US sales, for example, should not be blended into one number without explaining the currency, taxes, shipping norms and market difference. Convert currency only when necessary and label the converted figures; a conversion does not remove regional differences in supply and demand.
Match the selling format as closely as the buyer will experience it:

A local buyer may value a tested tower more highly than an online buyer who must pay for a large, fragile shipment. Conversely, a rare component may reach more buyers online than in one town. Decide which route you are actually prepared to use before interpreting the evidence.
Find completed-sale comparables
Search sold or completed listings rather than relying on active asking prices. An active listing shows what a seller hopes to receive; a completed transaction shows that a buyer accepted the price under identifiable conditions.

Search exact component terms
Begin with the full model name for the graphics card, then repeat the process for the processor, memory kit, storage drive and other parts that have a meaningful market. Include the exact VRAM or capacity where it changes the variant. Search the whole configuration as well, using the processor, graphics card, memory amount and storage capacity together. Save the sale date, item price, shipping charge, condition and included items for every usable result.
Remove misleading results
- Exclude bundles when you are valuing one component.
- Exclude laptops, monitors, accessories and empty cases from a complete-PC comparison.
- Exclude broken, damaged, untested, repair and “for parts” listings from a working-system estimate.
- Exclude listings with a different graphics-card model, VRAM amount, processor generation or memory capacity when those differences materially affect the market.
- Separate a bare component from a complete system instead of averaging them together.
- Flag unusually high or low sales for closer review rather than allowing one outlier to determine the result.
Review several transactions. One sale can reflect an unusually motivated buyer, a local bargain, an incomplete description or an error in the listing. The more closely the sales match your machine, the more useful their middle range becomes.
Summarize the evidence and state confidence
For a well-matched group, use the median or a middle range rather than the highest observed price. Record how many relevant sales you found, how recent they are and how widely they vary. A narrow spread among several recent, exact matches supports a tighter estimate. A sparse or widely scattered set calls for a wider range and an explicit confidence warning.
PC Atlas describes a methodology that labels a target supported by at least three sales in a 90-day window as “Verified” and a value backed by fewer sales as “Estimated.” That is PC Atlas’s own confidence convention, not an industry-wide threshold. You can use the same logic as a transparent description—three or more close sales provide stronger support than one—but do not present the label as a universal certification.
If exact matches are unavailable, use adjacent models only as context. Explain precisely what differs: for example, a nearby graphics-card variant, a different memory capacity or a complete system with a slightly different storage setup. Do not call an adjacent comparison an exact result. Fewer matches mean lower confidence, not permission to invent a precise dollar figure.
Build a component baseline and a complete-PC estimate
Prepare two separate views. First, estimate what supported components might bring if sold individually. Second, estimate the complete tower from sales of similar assembled systems. The component sum is a reference point, not an automatic price for the assembled PC.

No reviewed source establishes a universal bundle discount or premium for an assembled used PC. The complete-system evidence should therefore carry the most weight when you are selling the tower intact. Use the component baseline to test whether a part-out deserves further investigation, not to force the whole-system estimate to equal the sum.
Use GPU rules of thumb only as a check
PC Game Check’s August 2026 US guide estimates that the graphics card represents roughly 50–70% of a typical gaming PC’s resale value and suggests adding 40–60% to a GPU value for the other components. These are that guide’s editorial rules of thumb, not verified universal formulas. They can provide a quick sanity check when whole-system sales are scarce, but they should not override several close complete-PC transactions.

The same guide estimates that parting out may sometimes earn 15–30% more than selling a whole system. Treat that as an editorial estimate, not a guaranteed premium. Separate listings require more photographs, packing, shipments, buyer messages and dispute handling, and some parts may remain unsold. Compare the likely net results and the effort before choosing.
Adjust for condition, configuration and completeness
Working status
Price a reliably working, demonstrated system against working sales. A machine that boots but has an unresolved crash, overheating issue or failing drive should be compared with listings that disclose a similar limitation. Unknown history is not equivalent to a clean test history.
Cosmetic state and maintenance
Dust, stained filters, damaged glass, missing feet and bent panels affect buyer confidence and may require replacement. Cleaning the case and presenting clear photographs are sensible trust-building steps, but the available guidance does not establish a fixed dollar premium for cleaning or better photos. Treat them as ways to make the evidence credible, not as guaranteed value additions.
Exact configuration
Memory capacity, storage type and capacity, power-supply documentation and cooling can change how buyers compare two otherwise similar towers. Keep the exact configuration visible in the title and specification list. Do not let a sale with half the memory or a different graphics-card variant anchor your estimate merely because the product family name looks similar.
Included items
State whether original boxes, spare modular cables, Wi-Fi antennas, manuals and accessories are present. Include peripherals only when they are part of the offered package and when comparable sales also include them. A component-only sale should not be credited with the value of accessories that remain with you.
Convert a gross estimate into net proceeds
After selecting a likely transaction range, calculate what you would keep. The basic relationship is:
Net proceeds = gross transaction price − marketplace fees − seller-paid shipping and packing costs.
Use the platform’s current fee and policy pages when you prepare a dated estimate; fees and terms can change, and a specific percentage should not be assumed without verification. Keep buyer-paid shipping consistent in your comparisons. If the completed-sale figure includes a shipping amount paid by the buyer, either compare delivered prices throughout or separate item price and shipping throughout.

Present both gross and net figures. A buyer-facing listing normally uses an asking price, while your decision about whether to sell should use the net amount you realistically expect to retain.
Choose an asking range without false precision
Start with the middle of the closest completed-sale range, then decide how much negotiation room is appropriate for your venue. Do not publish a single “exact value” when the comparable sales are sparse or inconsistent. A range communicates uncertainty honestly and lets you explain what would move the result toward its high or low end.
- Upper end: close match, working demonstration, complete accessories, clean condition and favorable sale format.
- Middle: ordinary cosmetic wear, documented operation and a configuration that matches most but not all of the comparables.
- Lower end: missing pieces, uncertain history, visible faults, weaker local demand or costs that make shipping unattractive.
Keep three figures in your worksheet: the advertised asking price, the expected gross transaction range and the expected net proceeds. Explain the market, currency, sale date window, condition and comparable count beside them. That context is more useful than extra decimal places.

Prepare evidence that supports the estimate
- Clean safely. Remove dust and fingerprints, secure loose cables and avoid presenting cleaning as a repair. An electric air duster is optional; it is not a valuation requirement.
- Photograph the actual machine. Show the exterior, interior, component labels where practical, ports, storage information and any damage. Do not use a stock image in place of the offered PC.
- Show that it runs. Include a photograph or short demonstration of the system reaching the operating system and displaying the claimed hardware. Disclose any test that you did not perform.
- Publish exact specifications. List the CPU, GPU and VRAM, motherboard, memory capacity and generation, storage, power-supply model and wattage, case, cooler, operating-system status and included accessories.
- Disclose limitations. State missing accessories, cosmetic defects, noisy fans, drive warnings, intermittent behavior or other known issues before a buyer commits.
- Price against sold listings. Recheck recent completed sales immediately before publishing because marketplace prices and fees are volatile.
These steps improve trust and reduce disputes. The available guidance does not support assigning a fixed monetary bonus to cleaning, photographs or a boot demonstration, so use them to justify the condition category rather than adding an invented premium.

Use the 15–30% part-out figure from PC Game Check only as a qualified scenario to investigate, not as a promise. If the extra gross amount disappears after fees, packing, time and unsold parts, the complete-system sale may be the better result even when the component baseline is higher.
A repeatable worksheet
Create a simple record so another person can follow your reasoning:

For example, if you find only two adjacent-model sales and no exact complete-system match, label the result as low confidence and explain the differences. If you find at least three close sales in a recent window, you can describe the evidence as stronger while still naming the spread and assumptions. The worksheet is not a substitute for judgment; it prevents hidden assumptions from being mistaken for market facts.

Using the original build cost
Receipts prove what you paid, not what a later buyer will pay. Correct this by replacing the cost basis with recent completed sales for matching used parts and systems.

Adding today’s new-part prices
A replacement-cost subtotal can omit tax, shipping, the case, cooler, peripherals or software, and it still describes new asking prices. Use it only as background context; it is not a used-PC valuation.
Relying on active listings
An unsold listing may be overpriced or poorly presented. Filter for completed transactions and record the result, not merely the seller’s target.
Mixing markets and formats
Do not average US and UK prices, local pickup and shipped sales, or complete PCs and bare components without identifying the differences. Build separate comparison groups instead.

Inspect several recent transactions and use a median or middle range. Record outliers and explain why they were excluded or retained.
Ignoring condition and missing parts
A working, demonstrated tower with all necessary cables is not equivalent to an untested machine with a missing panel. Put those facts in the comparable selection and in the listing.
Applying rules of thumb as laws
The 50–70% GPU-share estimate, the suggested 40–60% addition for other components and the possible 15–30% part-out advantage come from a 2026 US editorial guide. They are useful prompts when evidence is thin, not universal formulas.
Quoting a net figure without checking current terms
Fees and policies vary by venue and can change. Verify the current terms when publishing a dated estimate, then show the fee and shipping assumptions alongside the net result.

What a credible final estimate looks like
A useful conclusion does not say “your PC is worth exactly” one number without context. It says, in effect: this is the tested configuration; these are the recent completed sales in the stated region and format; this is the middle range for a complete system; this is the separate component baseline; and this is the net after the costs you expect to pay. It also states how many close comparables support the range and which uncertainties could move it.
That method answers both “What is my PC worth?” and “Is it worth less than a part-out?” without pretending that a generic depreciation rule can replace market evidence. Recheck the sold listings and current selling terms immediately before you list, because the estimate is a dated market observation rather than a permanent specification of the computer’s value.
