Estimate concrete’s embodied carbon by multiplying the quantity of each distinct mix by a matching, verified EPD global-warming-potential (GWP) factor, then adding the results: project emissions = Σ(quantity × GWP factor). Before calculating, define whether the result is product-stage A1–A3 only or also includes transport (A4), construction (A5), and later life-cycle modules. Keep every mix, unit conversion, EPD identifier, assumption and intermediate result traceable.
What the estimate measures
Embodied carbon is the greenhouse-gas impact associated with producing and using a material, reported as carbon-dioxide equivalent (CO2e). For concrete, the result depends on the mix design, cement and supplementary-cementitious-material (SCM) content, manufacturing energy, transport, curing and the life-cycle boundary selected. There is no single factor that represents every concrete product or project.
For a product-stage estimate, the usual boundary is A1–A3 under EN 15804 or an ISO-aligned method. RICS defines the calculation as “A1-A3 = material quantity × material embodied carbon factor” in Whole Life Carbon Assessment for the Built Environment, 2nd edition. A1–A3 covers raw-material extraction and supply, transport to manufacturing and manufacturing itself. Australian infrastructure guidance likewise directs teams to focus on EPD A1–A3 results for the product stage.
A project may need a wider result. Module A4 covers transport from the plant to the site, and A5 covers construction and installation. Whole-life assessments can also require use, replacement, end-of-life and benefits-beyond-the-system-boundary modules. State the boundary in the heading and in every table so a cradle-to-gate value is never mistaken for a cradle-to-grave result.

The European Commission reports that buildings account for 18% of whole-life-cycle emissions from the EU building stock and that construction and demolition waste represents 40% of waste generated in the EU. Those figures describe the EU building stock and waste stream; they are not a universal percentage for concrete on an individual project.
Step 1: Set the purpose, boundary and reporting unit
Write a one-sentence scope before collecting factors. For example: “This estimate reports A1–A3 GWP-total for concrete placed in the structure, in tonnes CO2e, using supplier-specific EPDs.” If a planning approval, client framework, green-building certification or regulation prescribes another boundary, follow that method instead.
Choose the modules
| Module | What it represents | When to include it |
|---|---|---|
| A1–A3 | Raw-material extraction and supply, transport to manufacturing, and concrete manufacture (cradle to gate) | Default for a product-stage or upfront material estimate; required by many EPD and PCR frameworks |
| A4 | Transport from the concrete plant or product dispatch point to the construction site | Include when the assessment method asks for delivery impacts or when plant location and haulage are material |
| A5 | Construction and installation, such as pumping, placing, curing energy and construction waste treatment | Include when site activities are within the project boundary |
| B, C and D | Use, maintenance, replacement, demolition, end-of-life and potential benefits beyond the system boundary | Use only for a life-cycle assessment that explicitly requires these modules |
Do not add an A1–A3 factor to a cradle-to-grave factor and call the sum “total.” Label each contribution by module and indicator. If a source omits a module, record it as excluded rather than silently treating it as zero.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSelect the indicator
EPDs can report GWP-total, fossil GWP, biogenic GWP and land-use-change GWP. Use the indicator required by the governing method and keep the label attached to every number. An A1–A3 GWP-total value cannot be substituted for fossil GWP without documenting the change.
Step 2: Build a complete concrete schedule
Start with the structural model, quantity take-off, bill of quantities, batch records or supplier tickets. Quantities should represent the same physical basis as the factor: normally cubic metres of concrete as placed, or mass in kilograms or tonnes. Reconcile design quantities with ordered and delivered quantities so omissions and waste are visible.
Separate mixes instead of using one project average
Create one line for every materially different mix. Separate by strength class, cement or SCM content, product type, supplier and plant whenever those differences lead to a different EPD or factor. A high-strength column mix, a lower-strength slab mix and a precast element should not be collapsed into one average merely because all are “concrete.”
At minimum, record these fields for each line:
- Mix ID and description, including strength class and exposure or durability requirements.
- Supplier, manufacturing plant and product type.
- Placed volume in m3 or mass in kg/tonnes, with the quantity source and measurement date.
- Specified cement, SCM or binder information when available.
- EPD identifier, publisher, verifier, product category rules (PCR), standard version, geography and validity period.
- GWP indicator and life-cycle modules represented by the factor.
- Density or other conversion factor when changing between mass and volume.
- Allowances for batching, delivery, placement or design waste, shown separately from the net structural quantity.
Keep a mapping from each schedule line to the exact EPD used. If one supplier provides several plants, do not assume a plant-specific result applies to all locations.

Step 3: Select and check an EPD factor
Use the highest-resolution defensible EPD available for each mix. The preferred order is a facility- and product-specific, third-party-verified Type III EPD; next is a product-specific EPD that does not identify the exact facility; if neither exists, use a regional-average EPD and disclose that limitation. Canada’s standard directs project teams to use the highest-resolution EPD available for each mix.

U.S. EPA PCR criteria require the A1–A3 boundary (and any deviation) to be stated explicitly and support product- and facility-specific, third-party-verified Type III EPDs. Treat a generic internet factor as a lead to investigate, not as a project value, until its unit, geography, age, PCR and modules have been checked.
EPD verification table
| Check | Question to answer | Action if it does not match |
|---|---|---|
| Declared unit | Is the value per m3, kg, tonne, square metre or another unit? | Convert the project quantity or obtain a factor in the required unit; never multiply unlike units. |
| Product and facility | Does the EPD describe the supplied mix and the plant that will manufacture it? | Use the closest valid EPD and disclose the geographic or product limitation. |
| PCR and standard | Which PCR and version apply, and is the EPD based on EN 15804+A1, EN 15804+A2, ISO 21930 or another accepted standard? | Confirm that the project method accepts the version and document any methodological difference. |
| Geography | Does the declared region cover the plant and supply chain for this project? | Prefer a local or regional EPD; otherwise use a sensitivity case for geographic uncertainty. |
| Validity | Was the EPD valid when the concrete was procured or assessed? | Obtain a current EPD or document why an expired value remains the best available evidence. |
| Indicator and modules | Is the reported value GWP-total, fossil GWP, biogenic GWP or land-use-change GWP, and does it cover A1–A3, A4 or other modules? | Match the required indicator and boundary, or report the alternative in a separately labelled column. |
An EPD number is not interchangeable with another EPD number simply because both are for “ready-mix concrete.” Mix recipe, cement replacement, plant energy, transport assumptions and accounting rules can all change the result.
Step 4: Put quantity and factor in the same unit
Use a direct multiplication when the units already match:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →mix emissions (kg CO2e) = quantity (m3) × EPD GWP (kg CO2e/m3)
If the EPD is reported per kilogram, use mass:
mix emissions (kg CO2e) = quantity (kg) × EPD GWP (kg CO2e/kg)
When the schedule is in cubic metres but the factor is per kilogram, convert with the density stated by the EPD or supplier:
mass (kg) = volume (m3) × density (kg/m3)
Then multiply the converted mass by the mass-based factor. Record the density source and whether it represents fresh, hardened or another declared condition. Do not import a convenient density from an unrelated mix.

tonnes CO2e = total kg CO2e ÷ 1,000
Retain unrounded intermediate values in the worksheet and round only the displayed result. This prevents rounding several small pours from changing the project total.
Step 5: Calculate every mix and sum the project
For each schedule line, multiply the quantity by its matching factor. Then add all lines:
project concrete emissions = Σ(quantity_i × GWP_i)

Illustrative two-mix calculation
The following figures are an arithmetic template, not a universal factor. Replace them with the applicable EPD values for the actual project.
| Mix | Placed quantity | A1–A3 GWP-total factor | Calculation | Emissions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mix A | 120 m3 | 240 kg CO2e/m3 | 120 × 240 | 28,800 kg CO2e |
| Mix B | 80 m3 | 180 kg CO2e/m3 | 80 × 180 | 14,400 kg CO2e |
| Project total | 200 m3 | — | 28,800 + 14,400 | 43,200 kg CO2e (43.2 t CO2e) |
Do not average 240 and 180 first unless the weighted quantity and the underlying EPD assumptions are demonstrably compatible. A simple average would give the wrong result because the mixes have different volumes.
Context for a published example value
An Australian Government Department of Infrastructure example from 2024 reports 255 kg CO2e/m3 GWP-total for A1–A3 for one concrete product. The same example reports 250 kg CO2e/m3 fossil GWP, 4 kg CO2e/m3 biogenic GWP and 1 kg CO2e/m3 land-use-change GWP. Those values describe that EPD example and are not a universal ready-mix factor. Use the indicator and product stated in the EPD rather than copying the number into another project.
Step 6: Add transport and site impacts when required
If the scope includes A4, obtain the delivery route, vehicle type, payload, return-trip convention and transport emission factor required by the assessment method. A generic calculation is:
A4 emissions = delivered mass × distance × transport factor

State whether distance is one-way or round-trip and whether the factor already includes empty return travel. For ready-mix, distinguish the concrete mass from the truck payload and document the source of each assumption. If an EPD already includes a transport module, do not add the same trip again.
A5 can include concrete pumping electricity or fuel, placing equipment, curing energy and treatment of construction waste. Record equipment hours or energy, fuel or electricity factors, concrete waste quantity and its treatment route. If the method allows an EPD default for A5, cite that default in the worksheet. Otherwise, show site data and assumptions separately from A1–A3.
Wastage can be handled by increasing the quantity sent through the relevant module or by reporting net placed concrete and a separate waste line, depending on the governing method. Choose one approach and avoid counting the same waste in both the mix quantity and an A5 calculation.
Quality control, uncertainty and sensitivity
Every result has uncertainty because concrete recipes, plant energy, transport and EPD rules vary. A transparent estimate is more useful than a falsely precise one. Use a base case with the best available EPD, then test the assumptions that could change the decision.
Minimum checks before issuing the result
- Confirm every concrete schedule line has a quantity, unit, mix ID and EPD or documented fallback factor.
- Verify that the EPD product, plant, geography, PCR, standard version and validity period match the project.
- Check that all factors use the same GWP indicator and that modules are labelled consistently.
- Recalculate one line by hand and compare it with the spreadsheet formula.
- Reconcile total volume or mass against structural quantities, tickets and procurement records.
- Check that density, waste, transport, pumping and site-energy assumptions are not counted twice.
- Keep unrounded line results, then show the rounded project total in kg and tonnes CO2e.
Useful sensitivity cases
Run separate cases for a facility-specific EPD versus a regional average, alternative SCM content, a different plant location, expected waste percentage and inclusion or exclusion of A4 and A5. Present the range and identify which assumption drives it. Do not combine incompatible EPD indicators merely to make a numerical range look complete.
If a factor is missing, mark the line as unresolved and explain the limitation. Substituting a generic value without its unit, geography and boundary creates a number that may look precise but cannot be defended.

| Decision criterion | Questions for the project team |
|---|---|
| GWP per declared unit | Is the candidate’s GWP-total (or required indicator) lower on a like-for-like A1–A3, A4 or A5 basis? |
| Strength and durability | Does it meet the specified strength class, exposure class, service life, curing regime and fire or other performance requirements? |
| Binder and SCM content | Does reduced cement or increased SCM content remain within the engineer’s limits and the supplier’s validated mix design? |
| Plant and transport | Is the supplying plant sufficiently close, and are additional haulage or delivery constraints likely to erase the product-stage saving? |
| EPD quality | Is the comparison based on current, third-party-verified, product- or facility-specific data under compatible PCR rules? |
| Availability and programme | Can the supplier produce the mix in the required volumes, seasons and pour sequence without extending the schedule? |
| Cost and procurement | Does the option fit the contract, approved materials list and budget, including testing or trial pours? |
Lower cement content or more SCMs can reduce GWP, but only if the mix still satisfies structural, durability, curing and procurement requirements. Obtain project-specific EPD evidence before claiming a reduction; a lower nominal cement content does not by itself prove a lower assessed GWP.

Recommended worksheet layout
A spreadsheet or LCA tool should make the calculation auditable by someone who did not build it. Use one row per mix and separate input, calculation and notes columns.
- Identify the mix: enter mix ID, strength class, product type, supplier and plant.
- Enter quantity: record placed volume or mass, unit, source document and any separately identified waste quantity.
- Attach the factor: enter the EPD identifier, publisher, verifier, PCR, standard version, geography, validity date, indicator and modules.
- Normalize units: add density and a conversion formula if the declared unit differs from the schedule unit.
- Calculate line emissions: multiply the normalized quantity by the matching GWP factor.
- Add optional modules: calculate A4 and A5 in separate columns using their own documented inputs and factors.
- Sum and report: total each module, total the selected boundary, convert kg to tonnes, and retain the unrounded values.
- Document scenarios: duplicate the calculation for sensitivity cases and identify the assumption changed in each case.
A useful summary table has columns for mix ID, quantity, quantity unit, EPD factor, factor unit, indicator, modules, A1–A3 kg CO2e, A4 kg CO2e, A5 kg CO2e, total kg CO2e and notes. Lock formula cells and preserve the source EPD files with the calculation date.

Using one generic factor for all concrete
Why it fails: strength, binder content, plant and geography differ between mixes. Fix: separate the schedule by mix and use the most specific valid EPD for each line.
Multiplying cubic metres by a kilogram-based factor
Why it fails: the units are incompatible. Fix: convert volume to mass with the EPD or supplier density, and record the conversion.
Mixing GWP-total with fossil GWP
Why it fails: the indicators represent different accounting categories. Fix: select the required indicator and report alternatives in separate labelled columns.
Adding transport twice
Why it fails: transport may already be included in an EPD module or default factor. Fix: inspect the EPD modules and add only the missing A4 or A5 contribution.
Calling A1–A3 a whole-life result
Why it fails: cradle-to-gate excludes delivery, installation and later modules. Fix: put the boundary in the result title and include additional modules only when required.
Ignoring EPD version and validity
Why it fails: PCR revisions and expired declarations can make comparisons inconsistent. Fix: record the standard, PCR and validity date and use compatible, current documents.
Rounding each pour before summing
Why it fails: repeated rounding can materially alter a large project total. Fix: retain full precision in calculations and round only the displayed totals.
