There is no universally cheaper choice between GPUs and specialized inference chips. Compare the cost of delivering the same useful output at the same quality and latency—not peak chip specifications—then include the system costs and idle capacity behind that output.
A starting point is cost per million tokens = hourly accelerator cost ÷ (measured tokens per second × 3,600) × 1,000,000. NVIDIA gives this simplified formula in guidance dated June 17, 2026. It is a compute-cost estimate unless the hourly rate already covers the rest of the system. For a fair GPU-versus-chip decision, measure the workload you actually intend to serve and calculate the full cost of doing so.
What you are estimating
Inference cost is the cost of serving a model after it has been deployed: processing inputs and generating outputs for users or applications. A cost-per-token figure is useful for comparing configurations, but it can hide important differences. One platform may be cheaper per token while producing slower responses, serving fewer concurrent requests, or failing to meet the same quality target.

Useful work means the same model and request mix delivered under the same service requirements. The accounting boundary determines whether you are comparing only accelerator charges or the cost of operating the complete system.

Choose the unit that matches the decision
- Cost per million tokens is useful when output volume is the main planning unit. State whether the tokens are input, output, or both; their costs and throughput can differ.
- Cost per request is more actionable when requests vary in length. Calculate it from the actual distribution of input and output sizes, not from one convenient prompt.
- Cost per hour or month helps with budgeting capacity, but it does not by itself show how much useful work that capacity will deliver.
Report the latency and quality associated with the cost figure. A low cost that comes from missing the required response-time target or changing the model quality is not an equivalent result.
Use the cost-per-million-token formula carefully
The simplified compute-only calculation is:
Cost per million tokens = hourly accelerator cost ÷ (measured tokens per second × 3,600) × 1,000,000
Here, the hourly accelerator cost is the price for the accelerator capacity being compared, and measured tokens per second is the throughput achieved by the selected model and serving configuration. Multiplying throughput by 3,600 converts a per-second rate into tokens per hour; dividing the hourly cost by that output gives a per-token cost, which is then scaled to one million tokens.
This is not automatically an all-in inference cost. If the hourly figure covers only accelerator rental, the calculation omits other expenses. If it includes the whole instance or service, do not add those included expenses again. Define what the price covers before comparing platforms.

Account for productive utilization
Capacity that is paid for but idle still has a cost. If a system can deliver a steady serving throughput of T tokens per second when productively serving traffic, but it is productively used only a fraction u of the time, a simplified average-output calculation is:
Average cost per million tokens = hourly system cost ÷ (T × 3,600 × u) × 1,000,000
For example, express utilization as a decimal fraction: 70% becomes 0.70. This adjustment is appropriate when the throughput figure represents capacity while serving and the utilization figure describes how much of the paid time that capacity is productively serving the workload. If your measured tokens-per-second figure already averages output over the full paid hour, including idle periods, do not multiply by utilization again.

Make the GPU and specialized-chip workloads comparable
A benchmark is only a fair comparison if both systems do the same work under comparable conditions. Before running tests, record the workload and serving requirements so the configuration is not silently changed to make one platform look better.
| What to hold constant or record | Why it affects the comparison |
|---|---|
| Model and version | Different models can deliver different quality, speed, and resource needs. A cost comparison between unlike models is not a hardware-only comparison. |
| Input and output size distribution | Short prompts and long generations place different demands on serving capacity. Capture representative sizes rather than relying on a single average without context. |
| Request mix and concurrency | Throughput depends on what arrives and how many requests are served together. Match the traffic pattern that the deployment is expected to handle. |
| Quality target | Quantization or other serving choices can affect output quality. Treat a cheaper configuration as equivalent only if it still meets the intended quality requirement. |
| Latency target | A configuration that delivers more tokens only by taking longer may not meet the service requirement. Record the target and test at that target. |
| Serving software and configuration | Framework, batching, quantization, and other implementation choices affect performance. Record them for each platform and account for the work needed to reach a production-ready setup. |
Some workloads benefit from recording prefill and decode separately. Prefill processes the input context; decode generates output tokens. If the application has a distinct latency or throughput requirement for either stage, an overall tokens-per-second average can conceal a bottleneck. Keep the distinction in the benchmark results and cost model where it matters to the service target.
Build a full operating-cost estimate
For rented capacity, begin with the applicable hourly charge and check what that rate includes. For owned equipment, convert purchase and deployment expenditure into an hourly cost over an explicitly stated useful life. Then add the costs needed to keep the selected workload running.
| Cost component | How to treat it | Questions to answer |
|---|---|---|
| Accelerator or instance charge | Use the price for the selected configuration and pricing arrangement; confirm whether it is accelerator-only or system-inclusive. | Is the charge hourly, and are there minimums or charges while idle? Does the quoted rate include a host? |
| Owned hardware and deployment | Amortize purchase and deployment costs over the stated useful life and expected productive use. | What equipment is included in the purchase cost? How many years of service are assumed, and how much of that capacity is expected to serve this workload? |
| Host and memory resources | Include host compute, memory, and other system resources when not included in the rental or purchase cost. | Does the model require additional host capacity, memory, or other supporting components? |
| Networking and storage | Count applicable network and storage costs, including charges outside the headline accelerator rate. | Will the workload transfer data or use storage that incurs separate charges? |
| Energy | Estimate consumption for the deployment using its measured or applicable power assumptions and local electricity price. | What is the power draw for this configuration under the tested workload, and what electricity rate applies at the deployment location? |
| Facility overhead | Include the deployment’s own cooling and facility assumptions rather than importing a figure from another site. | What overhead applies at this facility, and is it already included in a service or hosting charge? |
| Operations and engineering | Account for the effort required to deploy, maintain, monitor, optimize, and support the serving configuration where it is material to the decision. | Does moving to a new platform require integration, model-porting, or ongoing operational work? |
This checklist is a practical accounting framework, not a universal published formula. NVIDIA’s guidance also identifies capital expenditure, energy, memory bandwidth, and utilization as total-cost considerations. Avoid double counting any item already included in a provider rate or facility charge.

A step-by-step comparison
- Specify the service. Write down the model and version, request mix, input and output sizes, concurrency, quality requirement, and latency service target. Note whether the target applies to all requests or a defined portion of them.
- Select a viable configuration on each platform. Choose the serving software, framework, batching, and quantization settings. Confirm that the model is supported. Record engineering work needed to achieve production quality rather than treating a demonstration setup as deployment-ready.
- Benchmark representative traffic. Run a workload that reflects expected requests and concurrency. Measure useful throughput at the required latency, record productive utilization and power draw, and capture prefill and decode separately if they affect the application.
- Establish the cost boundary. For rented systems, use the relevant hourly price and identify storage, networking, host, and idle-minimum charges. For owned equipment, include purchase and deployment costs amortized over a stated useful life and expected utilization.
- Add local energy and facility assumptions. Use the deployment’s electricity price, power assumptions, and facility overhead. Do not transfer an electricity rate or cooling overhead from an unrelated region or data center.
- Calculate both cost per million tokens and cost per request. Use the same request mix for both platforms. For request cost, calculate the work represented by typical traffic rather than multiplying by a generic prompt length.
- Publish the service results with the cost. Show the latency and quality associated with each result. Identify the throughput measurement, utilization treatment, pricing basis, and cost components included.
- Test the assumptions that could change the choice. Recalculate for plausible utilization, demand peaks, electricity prices, and equipment life. Note which assumption changes the ranking, instead of presenting one assumed scenario as a universal answer.
How to handle rental and owned infrastructure
Rented cloud or hosted capacity
With rented infrastructure, the hourly rate is usually the most visible input, but it may not be the whole bill. Establish the relevant region, configuration, and pricing mode for the intended deployment. Include separate storage and networking charges, and account for any minimum billing or paid idle capacity that applies. A high-throughput benchmark does not deliver low average cost if the capacity remains reserved while demand is low.
Compare only configurations that can serve the chosen model and meet the latency and quality targets. AWS documents GPU-based EC2 infrastructure alongside purpose-built Trainium and Inferentia options. Their existence establishes that multiple accelerator paths are available in that ecosystem; it does not establish that one is cheaper for a particular model or workload. Current comparable prices and matched workload measurements are needed to make that determination.
Owned hardware
For owned equipment, a purchase price alone cannot be compared with an hourly rental rate. Convert the acquisition and deployment cost into an hourly equivalent using the useful life and utilization assumptions you intend to rely on. Add the system, networking, power, facility, and operating costs that are not already included. State the assumed useful life explicitly: changing it changes the hourly share of capital cost.

Interpret the result without overclaiming
The arithmetic is straightforward; the evidence behind its inputs is what determines whether the conclusion is meaningful. A result should be read as applying to the specified model, software, request mix, latency and quality requirements, cost boundary, and utilization assumptions—not as a general GPU-versus-specialized-chip ranking.
- Peak specifications are not delivered throughput. Use measured useful throughput for the chosen serving stack and target. A headline chip figure alone does not establish cost per useful inference.
- Lower hourly price is not necessarily lower unit cost. The less expensive system still needs to deliver enough useful work at the required service level, and the full cost may include platform-specific software or migration work.
- More throughput is not useful if the service target changes. Keep latency and output quality visible beside the cost so a slower or lower-quality configuration is not presented as equivalent.
- Utilization is a scenario, not a fixed property. Demand variation, batching, and serving software can affect productive use. Revisit the estimate as traffic and deployment behavior change.
NVIDIA’s June 17, 2026 cost guidance includes vendor-hosted, benchmark-specific claims. Treat any such result as applying to its named model, software, benchmark, and test conditions rather than as an independent guarantee. AWS’s 2025 guidance recommends ongoing evaluation of utilization, model accuracy, latency, and cost but does not provide a matched GPU-versus-specialized-chip cost figure. No matched, independently verified cross-platform statistic is established here to support naming a universal winner.

- Model and version, serving software, framework, quantization, and batching settings.
- Input and output size distribution, request mix, concurrency, and the quality and latency targets.
- Measured throughput under those conditions, how utilization was defined, and whether it was already reflected in the throughput figure.
- Hourly price or owned-equipment amortization basis, the components included in that amount, and any separate host, network, storage, or idle charges.
- Power and facility assumptions tied to the actual deployment location, plus the electricity price used.
- Cost per million tokens and per request, accompanied by the latency and quality results and sensitivity cases that materially affect the choice.
These details turn a single number into a decision tool: a team can change an electricity rate, expected utilization, or useful life and see whether the conclusion still holds without pretending the original estimate applies everywhere.
