Estimate an AI-chatbot interaction by converting its electricity use from watt-hours to kilowatt-hours, then multiplying by the carbon intensity of the electricity serving it: operational emissions (gCO₂e) = energy per interaction (Wh) ÷ 1,000 × electricity carbon intensity (gCO₂e/kWh). The arithmetic is simple; the difficult part is obtaining a credible energy figure, workload description, serving location and system boundary. If those data are unavailable, report a clearly labeled scenario or range—not a measured personal footprint.
The calculation in one line
For one chatbot interaction, use this formula:
Estimated operational emissions (gCO₂e) = energy per interaction (Wh) ÷ 1,000 × electricity carbon intensity (gCO₂e/kWh).
Watt-hours (Wh) measure electricity consumed. Dividing by 1,000 converts Wh to kilowatt-hours (kWh), the unit normally used for grid-emissions factors. The carbon-intensity factor expresses how many grams of carbon-dioxide equivalent (gCO₂e) are associated with each kWh. It should match the region, accounting method and period you are trying to describe.
For a batch of interactions, multiply the per-interaction result by the number of interactions only when the prompts, response lengths, model, serving conditions and accounting boundary are reasonably comparable. Otherwise, divide the workload into categories and calculate each category separately.

A worked arithmetic example
Suppose a scenario uses 0.34 Wh per query and the relevant electricity factor is 400 gCO₂e/kWh:
0.34 ÷ 1,000 × 400 = 0.136 gCO₂e per query.
This is a transparent scenario calculation, not a claim that every chatbot uses 0.34 Wh or runs on a 400 gCO₂e/kWh grid. Keep the energy estimate and the carbon-intensity assumption visible so another reader can reproduce or replace them.
A published reference point—and what it does not mean
Google reported the following for the median Gemini Apps text-generation prompt using May 2025 data:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Measurement boundary | Energy per prompt | Emissions | Water | What the figures represent |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google’s comprehensive production measurement | 0.24 Wh | 0.03 gCO₂e | 0.26 mL | Median text-generation prompt; Google’s 2025 disclosure, using its 2024 average fleetwide grid carbon intensity for the emissions calculation |
| Active accelerator only, for the same median prompt | 0.10 Wh | 0.02 gCO₂e | 0.12 mL | Narrower TPU/GPU-only boundary calculated in Google’s 2025 technical paper |
The provider says the results do not represent every prompt, are not indicative of future performance and have not been independently verified. Treat 0.24 Wh and 0.03 gCO₂e as a dated, provider-specific reference, not as the footprint of every interaction with that service—or with another chatbot. The figures are documented in Google’s August 21, 2025 explanation at Google Cloud’s measurement article.
The different rows show why the boundary matters. Google’s comprehensive method goes beyond active accelerator electricity: it accounts for full-system dynamic power, production utilization, CPU and memory, idle machines, data-center overhead and other serving components. The technical details appear in Google’s 2025 technical paper. Comparing its 0.10 Wh accelerator-only number with a whole-facility estimate would make the two workloads appear more different than they really are.
Why two apparently similar prompts can have very different footprints
Prompt and response workload
Input tokens, output tokens and response length all affect computation. A short classification request is not equivalent to a request for a long report. A model that performs additional reasoning or generates multiple candidate answers can use substantially more compute before returning one response.

Microsoft Research’s September 2025 deployment model illustrates the sensitivity. For frontier-scale models on an H100 node under its stated workload, utilization and power-usage-effectiveness assumptions, it estimates a median 0.34 Wh per query, with an interquartile range of 0.18–0.67 Wh. In a test-time-scaling scenario using 15 times more tokens, the median rises to 4.32 Wh. These are modeled scenarios, not meter readings for every chatbot session; see Microsoft Research’s September 2025 analysis.
Model class and optional media
Different models may use different parameter counts, quantization, accelerators and decoding strategies. Image, audio and video generation generally involve different pipelines from text generation, so a text-prompt estimate should not be silently applied to a media request. If a service offers a “reasoning,” “extended thinking” or agent mode, record that mode as part of the workload description.
Hardware, batching and utilization
Energy per request depends on the accelerator, memory, software stack, batching and how fully the hardware is utilized. A production service can share a machine among requests, while an isolated benchmark may leave capacity idle. A benchmark number therefore cannot automatically describe a provider’s fleet, and a provider’s fleet average cannot describe every laboratory run.
System boundary
An accelerator-only boundary counts less than one that includes CPUs, memory, networking, storage, idle capacity and data-center infrastructure. State explicitly whether your estimate covers only active chips or the serving stack. Otherwise, two honest estimates can differ by multiples while describing the same request.
Electricity carbon basis
The same energy use produces different emissions on different grids. Specify the serving region and time period, and say whether the factor is location-based (the average grid where electricity is consumed) or market-based (which can reflect contractual clean-energy procurement). Provider accounting choices can change a market-based result even when physical electricity use is unchanged.

Evidence type
Label whether a number comes from direct production measurement, a bottom-up model, a benchmark or a public calculator. Those evidence types answer different questions and do not have equal uncertainty.
A step-by-step method for your own estimate
1. Define what you are counting
Write a one-sentence boundary before collecting numbers. For example: “Electricity-related emissions for inference, including the serving data center but excluding model training, user-device electricity and hardware manufacturing.” If you want a life-cycle result, add embodied hardware in a separate calculation. If you want the footprint of your entire activity, add your laptop, phone or network equipment separately rather than hiding them in the chatbot figure.
2. Describe the interaction
- Model and mode, including any reasoning or agentic setting.
- Approximate input and output token counts, or at least prompt and response length.
- Text, image, audio or video modality.
- Number of retries, tool calls and regenerated answers.
- Date and service edition, because models and infrastructure change.
3. Obtain an energy-per-interaction value
Prefer a provider’s production measurement that matches your model and date. If it is unavailable, use a published modeled scenario whose workload resembles yours. Do not present a generic calculator output as telemetry from your private session.
Recommended Free Tools
For ordinary short text, Google’s 0.24 Wh median prompt is one dated reference point; Microsoft’s 0.34 Wh median is a modeled frontier-model scenario. A long, token-intensive reasoning workload may be closer to Microsoft’s 4.32 Wh test-time-scaling scenario, while a benchmark study reported estimates above 33 Wh for some long prompts on o3 and DeepSeek-R1. The latter is a result for the workloads and infrastructure assumptions defined by Jegham and colleagues, not a universal per-query value; read the study at arXiv.
4. Select a carbon-intensity factor
Use a factor for the electricity serving the workload, not automatically the grid where you happen to be sitting. If the provider does not disclose a region, use a clearly labeled regional scenario and explain why it is only an approximation. Record the factor’s units, year or month, and whether it is location-based or market-based.
5. Convert and multiply
Convert Wh to kWh, multiply by gCO₂e/kWh, and retain enough decimal places to show the calculation. Round the final result sensibly; do not report more precision than the energy and grid assumptions support.

6. Present uncertainty as a range
Use low, central and high cases when energy or grid data are uncertain. Each case should have an explanation, such as a short response versus a long reasoning response, or a lower- versus higher-carbon serving grid. A range is informative only when the cases use compatible boundaries.
7. Scale to a workload
Multiply each category by its count. If you sent 100 interactions that all match the same 0.34 Wh scenario on a 400 gCO₂e/kWh grid, the arithmetic is 100 × 0.136 g = 13.6 gCO₂e. If half were short requests and half used extended reasoning, calculate the two groups separately instead of averaging incompatible assumptions first.
Worked scenarios with the assumptions exposed
| Scenario | Energy assumption | Illustrative grid factor | Calculated emissions | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short text, modeled frontier query | 0.34 Wh (Microsoft Research median, 2025) | 400 gCO₂e/kWh | 0.136 gCO₂e | Uses a hypothetical grid factor; not a measurement of a specific provider |
| 15×-token test-time scaling | 4.32 Wh (Microsoft Research median, 2025) | 400 gCO₂e/kWh | 1.728 gCO₂e | Represents the modeled high-compute scenario, not an ordinary prompt |
| Long-prompt benchmark example | 33 Wh (lower edge of “above 33 Wh” report) | 400 gCO₂e/kWh | 13.2 gCO₂e | Illustrates the benchmark’s long workloads; the study does not establish this as a universal value |
The 400 gCO₂e/kWh factor in this table is deliberately an illustrative assumption. Replace it with the factor appropriate to your serving region and accounting basis. The table is useful for checking arithmetic and workload sensitivity, not for ranking providers.

Keep carbon, water and hardware impacts separate
Water and embodied emissions are related environmental concerns, but they are not interchangeable with operational electricity CO₂e. Google’s 0.26 mL figure is a water estimate for its median May 2025 text prompt; the paper describes cooling and associated data-center infrastructure in its water accounting. Report it as milliliters of water, not as a conversion into grams of CO₂e.
Google’s technical paper also describes a comprehensive emissions measure that includes electricity-related market-based emissions and embodied accelerator emissions. If you use that life-cycle-oriented measure, say so. Do not add embodied hardware a second time to a result that already includes it.
Per-prompt numbers are not the footprint of AI as a whole
A single interaction is a unit of inference, not a complete life-cycle inventory. Training may occur relatively few times, while inference runs repeatedly for every user and application request. The OECD notes that repeated inference can become more energy- and water-intensive over an AI system’s life cycle because it continues throughout deployment. Its discussion appears in OECD Digital Economy Outlook 2024, Volume 2.

For an organizational inventory, count request volume by model and workload class, then add other relevant stages—training, fine-tuning, data storage, networking, user devices and hardware manufacture—under clearly labeled boundaries. The OECD’s AI footprint overview calls for measurement standards, better data collection, AI-specific impact identification, attention beyond operational energy and emissions, and greater transparency; see OECD.AI’s AI footprint page.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Calling a scenario a personal measurement: Say “modeled estimate” or “scenario range” when provider telemetry is absent.
- Using one number for every prompt: Separate short text, long responses, reasoning and media workloads.
- Mixing boundaries: Do not compare accelerator-only electricity with a full data-center result without labeling the difference.
- Ignoring geography: Attach the grid factor’s region, date and accounting basis to the number.
- Confusing water with carbon: Report water in volume units and explain its cooling or infrastructure boundary.
- Adding embodied emissions twice: Check whether the source’s emissions figure already includes accelerator manufacturing.
- Relying on excessive decimal places: Round to reflect uncertainty in energy, utilization and carbon intensity.
- Comparing unlike evidence: A provider production measurement, a modeled deployment estimate and a laboratory benchmark answer different questions.
A concise reporting format
A credible statement identifies the interaction, energy estimate, carbon factor, equation, boundary, source and uncertainty in one place. For example:
“For 100 text interactions in the modeled frontier-query scenario, I used 0.34 Wh per query from Microsoft Research (September 2025), a location-based factor of 400 gCO₂e/kWh, and a serving-only electricity boundary. The result is 13.6 gCO₂e. This is a scenario estimate; the provider, region and exact workload were not disclosed.”
If you change the model, response length, geography or boundary, publish a new line rather than silently reusing the old number. Google’s technical paper warns that without a standardized, comprehensive measurement boundary, reported figures can vary by orders of magnitude for similar tasks, hindering transparency and accountability. That is why the assumptions belong beside the result, not in a footnote separated from it.
