Stripe’s U.S. standard rate for a successful domestic online card payment is 2.9% plus 30¢. That is a starting point, not a complete estimate: card entry method, international cards, currency conversion, in-person payments, and add-on products can change the bill. This review explains the published fees and the decisions a business should check before choosing Stripe.
Stripe pricing at a glance
The rates below are Stripe-published U.S. standard prices accessed in 2026. They are not an independent audit or a guarantee of the full cost for a particular account. Custom agreements, market, product configuration, and transaction mix can change what a business pays. See Stripe’s U.S. pricing page for current terms.
| Use | Published U.S. standard fee |
|---|---|
| Successful domestic online card transaction | 2.9% + 30¢ |
| Manually entered card | Additional 0.5% |
| International card | Additional 1.5% |
| Currency conversion, when required | Additional 1% |
| Domestic in-person card through Terminal | 2.7% + 5¢ |
| International card through Terminal | Additional 1.5% |
| Terminal Tap to Pay | Additional $0.10 per authorization |
These percentages and fixed charges apply in the contexts stated; do not add every surcharge to every payment automatically. Whether a surcharge applies depends on the transaction. A business selling in another country should use that market’s pricing rather than treating these U.S. figures as universal.

For a successful domestic online card payment, the baseline is 2.9% of the transaction plus 30¢. For example, a $100 payment at that rate would incur $3.20 in processing fees before any applicable additional charges. A manually entered card adds 0.5 percentage points; an international card adds 1.5 percentage points; and a required currency conversion adds 1 percentage point. These can stack when the transaction meets more than one condition.

That baseline is not a complete cost model. Estimate using the business’s actual payment mix: average transaction size, online versus in-person sales, domestic versus international cards, keyed payments, currency conversions, refunds, disputes, and any paid Stripe products. Stripe’s processing page lists the standard fees and its FAQ terms at stripe.com/pricing.
In-person payments use different Terminal pricing
Stripe Terminal’s listed domestic in-person card rate is 2.7% + 5¢, rather than the online card rate. The pricing page lists a 1.5% addition for international cards and an additional $0.10 per authorization for Tap to Pay. Confirm the applicable Terminal charge for the method and card involved rather than applying online rates to face-to-face sales.

Stripe says Terminal works with pre-certified Stripe readers or select third-party readers. The pricing information does not identify a specific model, establish current inventory, or mean that any generic reader will work. Stripe Billing’s pay-as-you-go option is listed at 0.7% of Billing volume. Stripe says that this covers Billing transactions processed on and off Stripe, excluding one-off invoices. Its Billing page also lists tiers paid monthly under annual contracts, starting at $620 per month, with additional volume terms; the right tier and eligibility depend on the business and should be checked directly. Details are on Stripe Billing pricing.

Billing is a separate product charge, not a replacement for payment processing. For a subscription paid by card through Stripe, estimate the applicable payment-processing fee as well as the Billing charge under the chosen setup. Do not apply the 0.7% fee to every invoice: one-off invoices are excluded from the stated pay-as-you-go Billing volume.
Connect fees depend on who controls payments
Stripe Connect pricing depends on the platform’s arrangement with connected accounts and on who sets and collects payment fees. Stripe describes Stripe-managed pricing for connected accounts and a platform-controlled pricing model; revenue share is subject to qualification. A marketplace or platform should compare the relevant Connect configuration and its payment flows rather than assume one universal Connect fee. Consult Stripe Connect pricing for the applicable arrangement.

Radar fraud protection has tiers
Stripe describes Radar Lite as included with standard Payments, while paid options offer additional controls. The main pricing page lists pay-as-you-go pricing starting at $0.05 per screened transaction and monthly plans starting at $10. Those starting prices should not be treated as a quote for every business: the Radar page distinguishes business and platform tiers, so confirm the account type, plan, and capabilities before budgeting. See Stripe Radar pricing and the main pricing page.
Refunds and recurring fees
Stripe’s standard-pricing FAQ says there are no setup, monthly, or closure fees for standard pricing. That does not make every product free of recurring or usage-based charges: Billing and Radar, for example, have separate fees.

For most payment methods, Stripe says there is no fee to issue a refund, but it does not return the original processing, Connect, or currency-conversion fees. Bank transfers may carry refund fees, and custom pricing can differ. Factor unrecovered fees into refund and cancellation forecasts; see the FAQ on Stripe’s pricing page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Stripe a fit for a small business?
Stripe’s published rates make it possible to model costs, but price alone does not establish overall value. Fit depends on the sales model and operating needs, including whether the business sells one-time purchases, subscriptions, marketplace transactions, or in-person. Compare processors using the same transaction mix and business profile.
- Effective cost: Include online and in-person volume, domestic and international cards, keyed transactions, conversion, refunds, disputes, and add-ons.
- Business model: Account for separate Billing and Connect structures where subscriptions or connected sellers are involved.
- Payment coverage: Check that the specific payment methods and countries relevant to customers are supported; headline coverage counts alone do not answer that question.
- Integration effort: Compare the hosted checkout or prebuilt components with the custom integration the business actually needs. Published pricing does not establish which will require less engineering work for a particular site.
- Fraud controls: Identify what is included in the relevant Radar tier and whether paid controls fit the business and account type.
- In-person operations: Verify reader compatibility, availability, shipping, and support for the intended Terminal setup.
This is a review of Stripe’s official product and pricing information, not a hands-on test. It does not independently establish uptime, support quality, account-hold rates, dispute outcomes, or customer satisfaction, so those should not be inferred from the fee schedule.
