A phone’s battery life is not determined by its mAh number alone. Convert the rated capacity to watt-hours (Wh), reduce that energy for battery age and reserve or conversion losses, then divide by your phone’s time-weighted average power draw.

Runtime (hours) = usable battery energy (Wh) ÷ average phone power draw (W). A 5,000 mAh battery rated at 3.85 V has about 19.25 Wh of nominal energy. If the battery is at 90% health and 85% of its energy is treated as usable, the estimate is about 14.7 Wh. At a 1.5 W average draw, that works out to approximately 9.8 hours. This is a calculation example, not a promise of screen-on time: your display, signal, radios, apps, temperature and workload determine the actual draw.

Start with watt-hours, not mAh

Milliamp-hours (mAh) measure electric charge. Watt-hours (Wh) measure energy, which is what a phone consumes. Convert the battery rating before comparing phones:

Input What it represents How to use it
Capacity in mAh Rated charge stored by the cell or battery pack Divide by 1,000 to express amp-hours
Nominal voltage in V The battery voltage used for an energy estimate Multiply by amp-hours
Result in Wh Nominal stored energy Adjust for health and energy that is not available to the phone

Use the nominal voltage printed in the phone’s specifications or service information. Do not substitute the charger’s output voltage; a USB charger may advertise 5 V, 9 V or another negotiated value while the battery cell itself has a different nominal voltage.

Worked example: a 5,000 mAh battery

  1. Convert charge to amp-hours: 5,000 mAh ÷ 1,000 = 5 Ah.
  2. Multiply by nominal voltage: 5 Ah × 3.85 V = 19.25 Wh nominal.
  3. Apply reported battery health. At 90% maximum capacity, 19.25 Wh × 0.90 = 17.325 Wh of first-order remaining capacity.
  4. Allow for reserve and conversion losses. With an illustrative 85% usable-energy factor, 17.325 Wh × 0.85 ≈ 14.7 Wh usable.
  5. Divide by average draw. At 1.5 W, 14.7 Wh ÷ 1.5 W ≈ 9.8 hours.

The 1.5 W draw and 85% factor are assumptions for demonstrating the method. Replace them with measurements or a clearly described comparison test; otherwise the result is an estimate, not a measured endurance claim.

Turn your day into a usage profile

Average power is a time-weighted blend of everything the phone does, including periods when the screen is off. List a normal day in blocks, record how long each block lasts, and obtain an average power value for each block from telemetry, a comparable test, or a controlled measurement.

Activity block Hours in your day Average power source Energy calculation
Screen-on web browsing Your measured duration Phone telemetry or a controlled browser test Hours × watts
Video streaming Your measured duration Telemetry or a repeatable streaming test Hours × watts
Gaming Your measured duration Telemetry or the same game and graphics settings in a test Hours × watts
Camera photography or recording Your measured duration Telemetry or a controlled camera workload Hours × watts
Navigation and GPS Your measured duration Telemetry during the route and network conditions you use Hours × watts
Calls, messaging and music Your measured duration Telemetry or separate controlled measurements Hours × watts
Background sync and standby Remaining time Overnight or idle telemetry with your normal radios enabled Hours × watts

For each row, multiply hours by average watts to get watt-hours. Add all rows to obtain the day’s expected energy use. The weighted average draw is total watt-hours divided by total hours in the profile. Qualcomm describes this time-weighted approach as combining individual use cases to mimic a real-world pattern rather than treating one activity as representative of the entire day.

Use your own proportions

A person who streams video for two hours, navigates for an hour and leaves the phone idle overnight has a different average from someone who plays a demanding 3D game for an hour and uses a bright, high-refresh display all day. Keep the activity durations honest; changing them to match a review’s test invalidates the personal estimate.

Include standby instead of assuming it is free

Screen-off time still consumes energy for cellular registration, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, push notifications, background synchronization, location services and an always-on display. Measure standby separately when possible. A phone that appears efficient during an isolated screen test can lose substantial energy through radios or background work over a long idle period.

Calculate usable energy after battery aging

Battery health is a capacity adjustment, not a complete prediction of runtime. If the operating system reports a maximum-capacity fraction, use it as a first-order multiplier:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Current usable energy ≈ new-battery Wh × battery-health fraction × usable-energy fraction

The usable-energy fraction represents energy held in reserve, conversion losses and the point at which the phone shuts down to protect the battery. It is not a universal constant. Use a documented assumption and label it, or calibrate it against repeated discharge observations.

What the health percentage does and does not mean

  • A 90% health reading suggests roughly 90% of the original capacity under the device’s measurement model; it does not guarantee 90% of the original runtime in every workload.
  • Temperature, calibration, instantaneous load and reserve behavior can make the phone stop earlier or later than a simple capacity multiplier predicts.
  • The European Union’s cycle definition treats battery endurance as the number of charge/discharge cycles until usable capacity reaches 80% of rated capacity. That threshold describes a regulatory durability point, not a promise that every phone reaches it at the same cycle count.

Temperature and calibration effects

Cold conditions can temporarily reduce available capacity and increase voltage sag under load. Heat can raise power demand and accelerate degradation. After a software update, a battery replacement or unusual charging pattern, the displayed percentage may also need several normal cycles to recalibrate. Treat a single health reading as an input with uncertainty, not as a laboratory measurement.

Convert usable energy into a runtime range

Apply the runtime equation to more than one power assumption:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Runtime (hours) = usable Wh ÷ average W

Scenario How to choose the draw What the result means
Low draw Light browsing, low brightness, strong Wi‑Fi or mostly standby An optimistic boundary for your stated profile
Typical draw Your time-weighted average from a representative day The central planning estimate
High draw Weak signal, high brightness, GPS, camera or sustained gaming A conservative boundary for demanding periods

Do not present a single decimal as if it were exact. Report the assumptions beside each result: battery capacity and voltage, health percentage, usable-energy factor, average draw, brightness, refresh rate, network mode, software version and workload. If you cannot measure power, give separate light, mixed and heavy-use profiles rather than inventing a universal average.

Translate a daily energy budget into a percentage

Once you have a daily watt-hour estimate, compare it with usable Wh. For example, if a profile consumes 7.35 Wh and the battery has 14.7 Wh usable energy under your assumptions, the profile represents 50% of that estimated usable capacity. This is useful for planning a workday or travel day, but it remains dependent on the same workload and conditions used to derive the 7.35 Wh.

Why a larger mAh number can last less

Two phones with equal capacity can have different energy because their nominal voltages differ. More importantly, runtime is energy divided by power. A phone with a more efficient processor, display driver, modem and software stack can draw less power and last longer with a smaller battery.

  • Display: Brightness, refresh rate, resolution, panel technology and the fraction of the screen that is active affect demand.
  • Processor and graphics: Games, camera processing, artificial-intelligence features and high-resolution video raise instantaneous and average consumption.
  • Modem and signal: A weak cellular signal can make the radio work harder. 5G, dual-SIM operation and frequent network searches can alter the profile.
  • Location and sensors: Navigation, GPS, camera, motion sensors and Bluetooth accessories add work even when the screen is dim.
  • Software: Background sync, poorly behaved apps, indexing and update activity can dominate screen-off drain.
  • Thermal state: Heat changes efficiency and may trigger performance or brightness behavior that changes demand.

The European Union’s energy-efficiency index combines measured endurance with nominal voltage and rated capacity for this reason: capacity alone does not describe efficiency. A standardized endurance result is meaningful only with its test scenario.

Understand standardized endurance figures

The EU standardized scenario mixes web browsing, video streaming, data transfer, video playback and gaming, and also measures standby. The reported battery endurance per cycle is the time a fully charged phone lasts in that defined typical-use scenario. A result of 10 hours means about 10 hours under that scenario, not ten hours for every owner or every screen-on workload.

Use such figures as calibration points. They help compare phones tested under the same procedure, but your brightness, apps, signal, temperature and activity mix may differ. A review that reports only “screen-on time” may omit standby, calls, navigation or the network conditions that matter most to you.

Make your own comparisons fair

  1. Charge each phone to the same stated level and use the same start and end percentages.
  2. Set the same display brightness. Qualcomm recommends a standardized usable brightness such as 200 nits for comparisons; use a measured level rather than identical slider positions because screens differ.
  3. Use the same refresh-rate setting, resolution, dark-mode choice and always-on-display behavior.
  4. Hold network mode, SIM configuration and Wi‑Fi conditions constant. Record signal strength or repeat the test in the same location.
  5. Use identical app versions, video files, game settings and test durations.
  6. Record temperature and software version, then repeat the workload enough times to identify an outlier.

Variables that commonly invalidate an estimate

Brightness and refresh rate

Maximum brightness is often a short-term boost mode rather than a sustainable setting. Adaptive brightness can also change during a test. Record the actual brightness or luminance and whether the display runs at 60 Hz, a higher fixed rate or an adaptive rate.

Cellular versus Wi‑Fi

Streaming over strong Wi‑Fi may use less power than the same stream over a weak cellular connection, while an idle phone with poor reception can drain faster than expected. Apple notes that cellular network, location, signal strength, feature configuration and usage affect its battery claims; Samsung gives similar cautions about network connection, settings and other conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GPS, camera and gaming

Navigation keeps location hardware, display and often the modem active. Camera recording adds sensor, image-processing and storage work. Games vary dramatically by frame rate, graphics quality, thermal limits and network activity. Separate these workloads instead of averaging them into a generic “heavy use” label.

Background activity and updates

Newly installed apps may synchronize or index content for hours. A system update can temporarily increase background work. To diagnose unusual drain, compare a normal day with a controlled overnight period after pending updates and large sync jobs have finished.

Measure instead of guessing

Phone telemetry is the most direct way to associate an app or workload with battery use, although the operating system’s estimates are not laboratory instruments. Use the battery-usage screen to identify which apps consumed energy during the exact period represented by your profile, then compare that observation with your calculated watt-hours.

Use a USB-C power meter for the right question

An inline USB-C meter can measure the USB path when you need empirical data about charging input, a power bank or a USB accessory. One published meter specification reports voltage from 4–30 V, current from 0–12 A, power from 0–360 W, accumulated capacity from 0–99,999 mAh and accumulated energy from 0–99,999 Wh, with peak recording and power-off data storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That instrument measures energy entering or leaving through its connector. It cannot see every internal phone discharge path, and charging losses mean input energy is greater than energy stored in the cell. Use it to calibrate charger and accessory assumptions, not to claim laboratory accuracy for the phone’s internal runtime.

  1. Place the meter inline between the charger and the phone, or between a power bank and the USB device.
  2. Reset accumulated Wh and peak values before the observation.
  3. Record charger, cable, negotiated voltage, current, temperature and phone state.
  4. Repeat the same charge or accessory workload and compare accumulated Wh, rather than relying on an instantaneous reading.
  5. Keep the measurement path and protocol identical when comparing devices.

A repeatable worksheet

  1. Record the battery specification: capacity in mAh and nominal voltage in V.
  2. Convert to nominal Wh: divide mAh by 1,000 and multiply by voltage.
  3. Record battery health: use the operating system’s maximum-capacity value if available, and note its date and conditions.
  4. Choose a usable-energy factor: document the reserve and conversion assumption instead of presenting it as a measured constant.
  5. List activity blocks: include screen-on tasks, radios, calls, camera, navigation, music, messaging, synchronization and standby.
  6. Assign durations: use a diary or screen-time history from a representative day.
  7. Obtain average watts: use telemetry or repeatable measurements for each block.
  8. Calculate each block’s Wh: multiply hours by watts, then add the blocks.
  9. Calculate average draw: divide total Wh by total profile hours.
  10. Calculate runtime: divide usable Wh by that average draw.
  11. Produce a range: recalculate with low and high draws that correspond to explicitly different conditions.
  12. Validate: compare the predicted percentage loss with the phone’s observed battery percentage over the same profile and investigate large differences.

When the estimate and the phone disagree

The phone dies earlier than predicted

  • Check for weak cellular reception, GPS, maximum brightness, high refresh rate or a demanding app during the period.
  • Review background battery usage and recent updates.
  • Verify that nominal voltage and capacity refer to the phone battery, not the charger.
  • Lower the usable-energy assumption or raise the measured average draw; do not simply change the final runtime without changing an input.

The phone lasts longer than predicted

  • Your assumed draw may represent a peak workload rather than the time-weighted day.
  • Standby and Wi‑Fi may be more efficient than the values used in the estimate.
  • The health percentage or usable-energy factor may be conservative.
  • Repeat the observation over a complete cycle; short intervals are distorted by percentage rounding and calibration.

Battery percentage falls in steps

The percentage display is a fuel-gauge estimate, not a direct watt-hour meter. Voltage sag under load, temperature and recalibration can make the displayed level move unevenly. Compare energy over longer, repeatable periods rather than interpreting one percentage point as a fixed quantity of Wh.

How to report your result responsibly

A useful statement includes the phone model and software version, rated mAh, nominal voltage, health percentage, usable-energy assumption, workload, brightness, refresh rate, network, temperature and the low, typical and high runtime outputs. Identify whether a number is calculated, measured with telemetry, measured at the USB input, or taken from a standardized test.

For example: “Using 5,000 mAh at 3.85 V, 90% reported health, an 85% usable-energy assumption and a measured 1.5 W average for this mixed profile, the calculated runtime is about 9.8 hours.” That wording makes clear which parts are specifications, which are assumptions and which are observations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practical decisions the estimate can support

Planning a workday

Build a profile from your calendar: communications, hotspot use, navigation, meetings, camera work and standby. Add a reserve for uncertain signal or temperature, then compare the resulting Wh with usable energy. This tells you whether to carry a charger or power bank without pretending to predict every minute.

Choosing between phones

Compare Wh, not just mAh, then compare standardized endurance under the same procedure. Use your own profile to decide whether a smaller battery paired with lower power draw suits you better than a larger battery attached to a more demanding display or modem.

Diagnosing a worn battery

Repeat the same profile at similar temperature and network conditions. If runtime declines while workload and settings remain stable, compare the change with the reported health fraction and inspect standby drain. A health reading near the EU’s 80% usable-capacity threshold is a reason to consider service, but it is not by itself proof that a replacement will fix an app or signal problem.
