There is no single fee for sending cryptocurrency. Estimate it by selecting the correct network, preparing the exact transaction, and checking the wallet’s fee preview—including its speed setting and total debit—immediately before you approve it. The fee depends on that network’s rules, the transaction’s size or computational work, and current demand.
That is why “How much does a crypto transaction cost?” has no universal answer. A useful estimate must match the network and the transaction you are actually preparing. A Bitcoin payment, an Ethereum token transfer, and a Solana transaction use different fee units and rules, so their quoted figures cannot be compared at face value.
What a network fee pays for
A network fee pays for processing a transaction on a particular blockchain. It is separate from the amount you send, and its unit and calculation depend on the network. The amount being transferred does not necessarily determine the fee: on Bitcoin, for example, transaction size and fee rate matter, not the BTC amount by itself.

Before approving, check the amount going to the recipient and the fee as separate figures. Also check the total debit from your wallet. Depending on the transaction, the fee may be charged in the network’s native asset; for example, Solana fees are paid in SOL. A wallet may display the fee in a small unit or offer a fiat conversion, so confirm which denomination each number uses.

Think of the wallet’s preview as an estimate for a particular proposed transaction, not as a general price list. The network selected, transaction details, current demand, and any speed or priority choice all affect what you see. If you change the recipient, amount, network, or action after viewing the fee, revisit the estimate: the earlier figure may no longer describe the transaction you are about to sign.
Also distinguish a blockchain network fee from a charge imposed by a service. If you withdraw from an exchange, the displayed withdrawal charge should not automatically be assumed to be the same thing as the blockchain fee. The exchange may set its own withdrawal pricing; check its terms and the transaction preview rather than treating the two charges as interchangeable.
Estimate the fee in your wallet
- Select the network the recipient specified. If a wallet offers more than one network, do not assume they are interchangeable. A fee estimate is meaningful only for the selected network, and the recipient’s instructions determine which one to use.
- Enter the recipient and amount, then prepare the exact transaction. A Bitcoin transaction’s inputs and outputs affect its size; Ethereum contract actions can require different amounts of computation from a basic ETH transfer. An estimate for a different transaction may not apply.
- Open the fee or speed options in the transaction preview. Wallet labels vary. Compare the available choices, such as a lower-fee or higher-priority option, and note whether the wallet presents an estimate or a maximum fee.
- Check the fee unit and total debit. Make sure you can distinguish the fee from the transfer amount and understand the unit shown. If the wallet shows a maximum reservation as well as an estimate, do not mistake the cap for the expected final charge.
- Refresh and review immediately before signing. Network conditions can change between preparing a transaction and approving it. Recheck the selected network, recipient, fee, speed option, and total debit in the final preview.
A practical way to use this process is to treat the preview as a checklist, not just a number. First verify the network and recipient. Then identify what the fee figure represents: a rate, a fee per unit of computation, an estimated total, or a maximum cap. Finally, check the amount that will leave your wallet, including any fee paid separately from the amount delivered to the recipient. If the wallet makes one of these details unclear, pause and consult its transaction help rather than guessing from a number alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWallet estimates predict conditions at a future inclusion time; they are not guarantees. Bitcoin.org notes that “Different wallets can suggest different numbers for the same moment — fee estimation is a prediction, not an exact science.” A different figure is not by itself evidence that a wallet is wrong: estimators may make different predictions about demand.
There is no dependable flat “crypto fee” to memorize. A useful quote needs the network, transaction type, and the moment at which the estimate was made. A fiat conversion can help put a fee into perspective, but it is also time-sensitive because exchange rates and network conditions move.
How fees are estimated on each network
| Network | What to look for | How the fee is determined | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin | Fee rate, commonly satoshis per virtual byte (sat/vB), and transaction size | Fee rate multiplied by virtual size | More inputs or outputs can make a transaction larger. The BTC amount sent does not by itself set the fee. |
| Ethereum | Gas, base fee, priority fee, and—in EIP-1559-style transactions—maximum fee per gas | Gas used multiplied by the base fee plus priority fee per unit of gas | The maximum fee per gas is a cap, not necessarily the amount charged; unused difference is refunded. |
| Solana | Fee in SOL, including any prioritization fee | Base fee per signature, with an optional prioritization fee based on compute-unit price and limit | The documented base fee is not a guaranteed total for every transaction. |
The table is a guide to what to inspect, not a cross-network price comparison. Bitcoin’s sat/vB is a rate applied to transaction virtual size; Ethereum’s gas figure describes computation and is priced using per-gas fees; Solana’s documented base fee is stated per signature and can be accompanied by a prioritization fee. To understand what you will pay, follow the wallet’s calculation through to its total for the prepared transaction.
Bitcoin: fee rate multiplied by transaction size
Bitcoin wallets commonly quote a fee rate in sat/vB. The fee in satoshis is the chosen rate multiplied by the transaction’s virtual size. The number of inputs and outputs affects that size, so two transactions sending the same BTC amount can have different fees. Bitcoin.org gives a simple one-input, two-output payment as an example of around 140 virtual bytes; that is a typical example, not a fixed size for every wallet or payment.

The 140-vB figure is useful for understanding the mechanics: transaction size is one part of the calculation, while the selected sat/vB rate is the other. It is not a promise about the size of your transaction or its fee. A transaction with more inputs or outputs can be larger, and your wallet’s prepared transaction is the one to use when reviewing the estimate. Sending a larger BTC amount does not by itself mean a higher network fee if the transaction’s virtual size and fee rate are unchanged.
A higher fee rate aims to improve a transaction’s chance of faster inclusion when block space is competitive; a lower rate may wait for a quieter period. Neither choice guarantees a particular confirmation time. If a low-fee transaction remains in the mempool, it may confirm later as demand falls. Some wallets support Replace-by-Fee (RBF), which can raise the fee on an eligible unconfirmed transaction. Check the transaction’s state and your wallet’s behavior before attempting a replacement.
Do not assume that every pending transaction can be replaced in the same way. Whether RBF is available depends on the transaction and wallet support. Before trying to raise a fee, check whether the transaction is still unconfirmed, whether your wallet offers a replacement action, and what that action will change. Follow the wallet’s own status and instructions; do not create a second payment simply because the first one is taking longer than expected.
Ethereum: gas and per-unit fees
Gas measures the computation a transaction uses. The broad calculation is gas used multiplied by the base fee plus the priority fee per unit of gas. The base fee is set by the protocol and changes with block usage; the priority fee is a tip that can influence inclusion priority. A more complex smart-contract interaction generally uses more gas than a simple ETH transfer.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Ethereum.org lists 21,000 gas as the standard amount for a simple ETH transfer. Treat this as a network-documentation reference, not as a prediction for every transaction or a dollar price. Token transfers and contract actions can differ materially from a basic ETH transfer.
This distinction matters when estimating a transaction that is not a simple ETH transfer. A wallet action involving a token or a smart contract is not automatically priced like sending ETH directly, because the computational work can differ. Use the estimate generated for the exact action you are preparing instead of multiplying a simple-transfer reference by a guessed fee rate.
For EIP-1559-style transactions, a wallet may show a maximum fee per gas. That figure caps what the transaction can pay per gas unit; it is not necessarily the final amount charged. Any unused difference is refunded. Check both the wallet’s estimated total and the maximum amount it may reserve. Ethereum.org says that “most wallet providers will automatically set a recommended transaction fee (base fee + recommended priority fee) to reduce the amount of complexity burdened onto their users.” Refresh the estimate before signing because the base fee and priority conditions can change.

In other words, keep the estimate and the cap conceptually separate. The estimate is the wallet’s prediction of the likely fee for the prepared transaction; the maximum fee per gas is a limit on what the transaction can pay per gas unit. If the wallet presents both, inspect both and understand which one affects the current expected total and which one represents a possible maximum. Do not read the maximum as a guaranteed final bill.

Solana fees are paid in SOL. Solana Documentation gives a base fee of 5,000 lamports per signature. A transaction can also have a prioritization fee, calculated as the compute-unit price multiplied by the compute-unit limit, divided by one million lamports and rounded up. The actual transaction and any priority setting matter, so the base figure alone is not a promise of the final total.
Lamports are a smaller denomination used to express SOL fees. If a wallet displays a figure in lamports, make sure you understand whether that number is the base fee, a prioritization fee, or the total shown for the transaction. A base-fee reference is useful context, but it does not replace the wallet’s transaction-specific preview.
For an ordinary transfer, use the fee shown by the wallet or app. Solana’s fee-estimator documentation describes a developer-facing API that can return fees in lamports and, when configured, a fee token; consumers do not need to operate that API to review a wallet estimate.
The relevant question for a consumer is not how to call an estimator API, but what the wallet says the specific transaction will cost and which fee components are included. If a prioritization option is offered, compare the resulting total and decide whether the setting suits your needs. Do not assume that a priority fee is mandatory or that every wallet exposes the same controls.
How to compare two fee estimates
Compare estimates only when they refer to the same network and the same prepared transaction. A Bitcoin sat/vB rate, an Ethereum per-gas amount, and a Solana lamport figure are not directly comparable: each needs to be understood in the context of its transaction and converted to a total fee.
- Fee unit and total: Identify the denomination and compare the total fee, not just a rate or per-unit figure.
- Speed or priority choice: Check whether the estimates use the same setting. A higher-priority setting can change the quoted fee.
- Estimate versus cap: On Ethereum, distinguish the estimated charge from the maximum fee per gas that may be reserved.
- Transaction details: Confirm that size, inputs and outputs, gas use, or compute requirements correspond to the transaction you intend to send.
- Network demand: Fee predictions can differ as conditions change. Refresh the preview close to approval.
When two wallets disagree, line up those five details before deciding that one quote is incorrect. One wallet may be presenting a different speed option, a rate rather than a total, a maximum rather than an estimate, or a prediction based on different assumptions about demand. Make sure both estimates are for the same network and exact action; otherwise, the comparison does not answer which quote is better.

A fiat conversion can help make a fee easier to interpret, but it is time-sensitive: both exchange rates and network conditions move. Treat a dollar figure as meaningful only when its time, source, network, and transaction are identified. There is no reliable flat amount for an unspecified crypto transaction.
For the same reason, avoid comparing a fee in one network’s smallest unit with a dollar figure from another wallet without checking the conversion and the time it was made. If a dollar equivalent is available, use it as an aid to understanding magnitude, not as a stable promise about what a later transaction will cost.

What to do when a fee looks wrong or a transaction is delayed
- The fee differs between wallets: Compare the same prepared transaction, network, fee denomination, and priority setting. Estimators predict future demand and can produce different recommendations.
- The estimate changes before approval: Refresh the preview and use the latest estimate shown for the transaction you are about to sign. Recheck the total debit before proceeding.
- A Bitcoin transaction is waiting: A lower-rate transaction may wait for a quieter period. If your wallet supports RBF, check its transaction status and instructions before deciding whether to replace it with a higher fee.
- The fee seems unexpectedly high: Check that you selected the intended network and transaction type. A Bitcoin transaction’s size, an Ethereum contract action’s gas use, or a Solana priority setting can affect the total.
- An exchange shows a withdrawal charge: Do not automatically treat it as the blockchain network fee. An exchange may set its own withdrawal pricing; the wallet’s network fee and the exchange’s charge are distinct figures, and exchange-specific pricing is not established here.
If a quote is confusing, do not try to infer the answer from the transfer amount alone. Reopen the transaction details, verify the network, and look for the fee denomination and whether the displayed value is a total, rate, or cap. If the wallet’s preview still does not explain what will be debited, wait until you can verify the details rather than signing on an assumption.
A delayed transaction does not mean that repeatedly resubmitting it is the right response. On Bitcoin, the transaction may confirm as demand falls, or an eligible unconfirmed transaction may offer an RBF option in a supporting wallet. Check the transaction status and wallet guidance first. The estimates described here are not a guarantee of confirmation time on any network.

- The selected network matches the recipient’s instructions.
- The recipient, amount, and transaction type are correct.
- The fee denomination and speed or priority setting are clear.
- You know whether any displayed maximum is a cap rather than the expected final charge.
- The wallet’s latest preview shows a total debit you are willing and able to approve.
Take this final look immediately before signing, even if you already checked the fee while setting up the transaction. The estimate is tied to a network and a set of transaction details, while network conditions can change. Frequently Asked Questions
How much are crypto transaction fees?
There is no universal amount. The fee depends on the network, transaction size or computational work, current demand, and any priority setting. Check the wallet’s preview for the exact transaction immediately before sending.
How do I calculate a network fee before sending?
Prepare the exact transaction in your wallet, select the correct network, and inspect its fee preview. The calculation differs by network: Bitcoin commonly uses a sat/vB rate multiplied by virtual size; Ethereum combines gas used with per-gas fees; Solana has a base fee and may include a prioritization fee.

Why is the network fee different from the amount I’m sending?
The transfer amount goes to the recipient, while the network fee pays for processing the transaction on that blockchain. They are separate figures and may be denominated differently. Check the total debit from your wallet before approving.
Does sending more Bitcoin mean paying a higher network fee?
Not necessarily. Bitcoin fees depend on the fee rate and transaction virtual size, which is affected by the number of inputs and outputs. The BTC amount sent does not by itself determine the fee.
Is the Ethereum maximum fee the amount I will pay?
Not necessarily. In EIP-1559-style transactions, the maximum fee per gas is a cap. The final charge can be lower, and unused difference is refunded. Review both the estimated total and the maximum the wallet may reserve.
Why do two wallets show different fee estimates?
Wallets may make different predictions about future network demand or present different speed options, units, or fee values. Compare the same network and prepared transaction, and check whether each figure is a rate, total estimate, or cap.
Can I lower a fee if my Bitcoin transaction is pending?
A low-fee transaction may wait for a quieter period. Some wallets support Replace-by-Fee (RBF) for eligible unconfirmed transactions. Check the transaction state and your wallet’s instructions before attempting a replacement; not every transaction can be replaced.
Is an exchange withdrawal charge the same as a network fee?
Not automatically. An exchange may set its own withdrawal pricing, which is distinct from the blockchain network fee. Check the exchange’s terms and transaction details rather than assuming the amounts are identical.
The Bottom Line
To estimate a crypto network fee, select the network the recipient specified, prepare the exact transaction, and review the wallet’s latest preview before signing. Check the fee unit, priority setting, whether a figure is an estimate or a cap, and the total debit. Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana use different fee rules, so there is no dependable flat fee for all crypto transactions.
