For a quick, location-specific estimate, multiply a representative rain rate by the time the storm’s rain field remains over that location. If the rain field is approximately W miles wide along the storm’s path and the storm is moving at V miles per hour, exposure time is about W ÷ V hours. That gives the conceptual estimate:

Approximate rainfall depth ≈ rain rate × rain-field width ÷ forward speed

Use compatible units: inches per hour multiplied by hours produces inches. This calculation builds intuition; it is not a validated operational forecast. Storm diameter is only a rough stand-in for the part of the rain field that crosses your location, and official forecasts are needed for an active storm.

What the estimate tells you

Rainfall at one location is controlled by two basic quantities: how intensely it is raining and how long that intensity persists. A hurricane that produces 2 inches of rain per hour for 3 hours delivers about 6 inches, before accounting for changes in rate, movement, terrain, or band placement. The same rate lasting 12 hours would produce about 24 inches.

Storm motion supplies a practical way to approximate duration. A rain field that is 100 miles wide and moving at 10 mph takes roughly 10 hours to pass a fixed point. At 20 mph, the same field takes about 5 hours. Slower motion therefore tends to increase accumulation, while a broader rain field generally increases the area exposed and can increase totals at locations it crosses.

The result applies to a representative segment of the rain field, not automatically to the entire cyclone. Rain bands are uneven, the center may pass well away from you, and rates can rise or fall throughout the event.

How to calculate a first-order rainfall estimate

1. Choose a representative rain rate

Use a rate that describes the period and part of the storm affecting your location. For a hypothetical calculation, suppose the representative rate is 1.5 inches per hour. An hourly rate from one intense band should not be treated as the rate for the whole storm unless you explicitly intend an upper-end scenario.

2. Estimate the rain-field width along the track

Measure the width of the rain-producing area that will cross your location in the direction the storm is traveling. If you only know a storm’s advertised diameter, treat it as a rough proxy. The diameter can include areas with little or no rain, while a concentrated band may be much narrower. A location near the edge of the circulation may also experience a shorter effective width than a location near the centerline.

3. Convert forward speed into exposure time

Divide width by forward speed:

exposure time (hours) = rain-field width (miles) ÷ forward speed (miles per hour)

For a 90-mile effective width moving at 15 mph, exposure is approximately 6 hours.

4. Multiply rate by exposure time

Using the example rate of 1.5 inches per hour:

rainfall ≈ 1.5 in/hour × 6 hours = 9 inches

This is a single representative estimate. A realistic range is more informative when the rate and width are uncertain. For example, rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour and effective widths of 70 to 110 miles at 15 mph produce a broad range of about 4.7 to 14.7 inches. That range reflects the assumptions, not a probabilistic official forecast.

Worked comparisons: speed, size, and rate

Holding two factors constant while changing the third shows why no single hurricane statistic determines rainfall.

Scenario Effective rain-field width Forward speed Representative rate Estimated exposure Conceptual rainfall
Fast, compact 60 miles 20 mph 1.5 in/hour 3 hours 4.5 inches
Slow, compact 60 miles 10 mph 1.5 in/hour 6 hours 9 inches
Fast, broad 120 miles 20 mph 1.5 in/hour 6 hours 9 inches
Slow, broad 120 miles 10 mph 1.5 in/hour 12 hours 18 inches
Slow, broad, heavier rain 120 miles 10 mph 2.5 in/hour 12 hours 30 inches

These are illustrative arithmetic examples, not predictions for a named storm. The final row demonstrates that an increase in rain rate can multiply the effect of long exposure.

Why storm size matters—and why diameter can mislead

National Hurricane Center (NHC) guidance says bigger storms tend to produce more rainfall and affect a larger area at the same forward motion. A broad circulation can carry deep tropical moisture over a wide region and keep rain-producing bands present for many hours.

“Storm size” can refer to several different measurements, such as the wind field, cloud shield, or the outer edge of measurable rain. None is identical to the rain-field width in the equation. A large wind field may contain dry sectors, while a compact storm can generate a narrow but very intense band. Use the width of the rain that actually crosses your location whenever that information is available.

Distance from the track

The center’s forecast path is not a guarantee that the heaviest rain will pass over that line. A location on the wet side of the circulation may receive repeated bands even when the center remains offshore. A location near the edge may see a short burst despite a large advertised diameter. Track-relative placement must therefore be considered separately from storm size.

Why forward speed matters

NHC’s Hurricane Readiness for Coastal Communities Student Manual (April 2025) states that slower storms can produce substantially more rainfall. In the simple model, halving forward speed doubles exposure time if width and rate remain unchanged.

Real storms do not keep a constant speed or rate. A cyclone can slow before landfall, stall near a steering-pattern change, or accelerate afterward. Rain bands can also regenerate on one side of the circulation. Use the speed expected while the rain field is over your location, not only the storm’s current speed far offshore.

Rain rate is the largest direct multiplier

Rain rate changes with convective intensity, moisture supply, instability, band structure, and terrain. NHC guidance identifies greater atmospheric instability as a factor that can enhance rain rate. A short period of very intense rain can dominate local flooding even when the storm’s average rate is modest.

For a more realistic hand estimate, divide the event into periods rather than applying one rate:

  1. Estimate the duration and rate of an initial shield or outer-band period.
  2. Estimate any hours of heavier bands separately.
  3. Estimate the central or post-center period separately if it is expected to affect your location.
  4. Add the segment totals: total ≈ (rate 1 × time 1) + (rate 2 × time 2) + ...

This segmented approach still remains conceptual because the timing and placement of bands are difficult to know precisely.

Atmospheric and terrain factors that alter the result

Size, speed, and a representative rate provide a starting point, but official guidance identifies several mechanisms that can shift rainfall totals and distribution:

  • Topography: Mountains and steep terrain can force moist air upward, enhancing rainfall on favored slopes and creating sharp differences over short distances.
  • Moisture: A deep tropical moisture supply supports persistent heavy rain; drier air can weaken or interrupt bands.
  • Instability: More unstable air can support stronger convection and higher local rates.
  • Vertical wind shear: Shear can tilt or displace the circulation and concentrate rain on one side, changing which communities receive the heaviest bands.
  • Diurnal cycle: Day–night changes in atmospheric heating can modulate convection, although the timing and size of the effect vary.
  • Fronts, upper-level troughs, and jets: Interaction with mid-latitude weather systems can expand rainfall far from the center or intensify a particular sector.
  • Track geometry: A storm moving at an angle to a coastline or valley can expose a location to a different effective width than the storm’s headline diameter suggests.

These factors are why a simple multiplication should be used to understand sensitivity, not to issue a warning.

Why hurricane category does not predict your rain total

Wind category and maximum sustained wind describe wind intensity, not the volume of rain that will fall at a particular point. A lower-category or weakening system can produce extreme rainfall if it is large, slow, moisture-rich, or interacting with terrain and fronts. Conversely, a powerful but compact, fast-moving cyclone can leave a location with less rain if its core and bands remain elsewhere.

NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information reported about 1,500 millimeters (60 inches) at Nederland, Texas, during Hurricane Harvey in 2017 and described it, in a 2019 article, as the highest tropical-cyclone-related rainfall total recorded in the United States at that time. That was a point and event-specific accumulation, not a typical storm-wide value or a rainfall amount implied by Harvey’s wind category.

How to use official products during an active storm

For a current tropical cyclone or disturbance, use National Weather Service and NHC forecasts rather than relying on the hand calculation. NHC describes experimental tropical-rainfall products that include:

  • Six-hour satellite quantitative precipitation estimates (QPE): an estimate of rain that has already fallen, presented in geographic bins.
  • Twenty-four-hour model quantitative precipitation forecasts (QPF): a model-based projection of rainfall for the coming period.

NHC’s overview notes that satellite methods can disagree. Those differences are an indication of uncertainty in the estimated amount, so a map should be read as a range of confidence and placement, not as a precise measurement at every address.

Check the accumulation period

Before comparing two numbers, confirm whether each is a six-hour estimate, a 24-hour forecast, a storm total, or a point observation. A six-hour QPE and a storm-total gauge value answer different questions. Keep the accumulation window with every quoted amount.

Historical totals: what the WPC archive can and cannot do

The Weather Prediction Center (WPC) Tropical Cyclone Rainfall archive contains historical information for landfalling systems from 1956 onward, with selected earlier cases. It is useful for examining what past storms produced in a region, but it does not forecast the next storm.

WPC’s Tropical Cyclone Rainfall Climatology Methodology combines quantitative precipitation estimates, radar, satellite imagery, tropical-cyclone reports, and point rainfall observations. WPC notes that its storm-total procedure can occasionally differ from NHC tropical-cyclone reports. When quoting a historical amount, identify the provider and the accumulation period instead of presenting the figures as interchangeable.

Using a rain gauge safely

A manual rain gauge can measure rainfall at one point after conditions are safe. Place it in an open area away from roofs, trees, walls, and splash-prone surfaces, and record the start and end times of the collection period. A gauge helps validate what happened at your property; it cannot estimate a storm-wide total, reveal rainfall in neighboring valleys, or replace official radar, satellite, gauges, or forecasts.

Common calculation errors and how to correct them

Error Why it fails Correction
Using storm diameter as exact rain width Diameter may describe wind or cloud extent rather than measurable rain over your location. Use an effective rain-field width and label it as an assumption.
Using the storm’s current speed everywhere Forward motion can change before and during the event. Use the expected speed while the rain field crosses your location, or calculate separate segments.
Applying one intense hourly observation to the entire storm Convective bands are intermittent and uneven. Use separate rates for shield, band, and post-center periods.
Ignoring track placement A large storm can miss a location or leave it on a relatively dry side. Estimate the width that actually intersects your location and inspect forecast rain-band placement.
Comparing totals with different time windows A six-hour estimate is not comparable to a storm total. Write the accumulation period beside every value.
Treating the result as an official forecast The equation does not model terrain, band evolution, or forecast uncertainty. Use NHC and National Weather Service products for decisions and warnings.

A practical checklist

  1. Mark your location relative to the forecast track, not just the center line.
  2. Estimate the effective rain-field width crossing that location.
  3. Use the expected forward speed during the crossing.
  4. Choose a representative rate, or split the event into several rate periods.
  5. Compute width divided by speed to get exposure time.
  6. Multiply each rate by its period and add the segments.
  7. Adjust your interpretation for terrain, moisture, instability, shear, fronts, troughs, and likely band placement.
  8. Compare the hand estimate with current official QPE, QPF, watches, warnings, and local flood guidance.
  9. Record the source and accumulation period for every official or historical rainfall number.

What this method is good for

The calculation is useful for explaining why a slow, broad storm can be much wetter than a fast, compact one and for testing the sensitivity of an estimate. It can show, for example, that doubling exposure time doubles the calculated depth when the assumed rate is unchanged. It cannot resolve which rain band will pass your house, how terrain will redirect flow, or whether a forecast track will shift.

For safety decisions, rely on official forecasts and flood warnings. Treat the multiplication as an educational approximation that makes the effects of speed, size, and intensity transparent.
