A 25,000mAh power bank will not deliver 25,000mAh directly to a phone. The label normally describes its internal cells at their nominal voltage. To estimate charge count, convert the bank and the device battery to watt-hours (Wh), use the bank’s rated output or a clearly stated efficiency assumption, and divide usable bank energy by the device’s battery energy.

If the bank has 3.7V nominal cells, the label represents about 92.5Wh of stored energy: 25,000mAh ÷ 1,000 × 3.7V = 92.5Wh. That is a starting point, not a promise of delivered energy. Voltage conversion, the bank’s electronics, the cable, charging conditions and the device itself reduce what reaches the battery.

The short answer: use energy, not the printed mAh alone

The defensible calculation is:

Estimated full-equivalent charges = usable energy delivered by the power bank (Wh) ÷ device battery energy (Wh)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Full-equivalent” matters. A result of 3.4 means enough energy for three complete battery equivalents plus roughly 40 percent of another under the stated conditions. It does not mean the device will necessarily go from 0% to 100% three times in a row; the phone may be partly charged when you connect it, and charging losses vary during the session.

For an exact estimate, you need the particular bank’s rated output capacity or efficiency information and the particular device’s battery rating. If those figures are unavailable, present the result as an assumption or range rather than as a guaranteed number.

Why a 25,000mAh label does not equal 25,000mAh at USB output

mAh is charge at a voltage

Milliamp-hours (mAh) measure electrical charge. The amount of energy represented by that charge depends on voltage. The relationship is:

Wh = (mAh ÷ 1,000) × V

TP-Link uses this relationship to show why a lithium-ion bank rated at about 3.7V has a different mAh figure when its energy is converted to the 5V used by a typical USB output. Its explanation is available in “Understanding the capacity (mAh) and the charge efficiency of a power bank”.

The bank boosts voltage before charging

The internal cells are commonly specified at a nominal voltage around 3.7V, while USB charging circuitry raises that voltage to the output level required by the device. The same stored energy therefore corresponds to fewer amp-hours at the higher output voltage. Anker describes this distinction between internal-cell capacity and usable rated capacity in its support explanation, “Why is the Rated Capacity of Power Banks Lower Than Expected.”

The conversion circuit consumes energy

Voltage conversion is not lossless. As TP-Link puts it, “The internal circuit must consume some power so the efficiency cannot be 100%.” Heat, the converter, cable resistance and the device’s own charging electronics all reduce the energy stored in the device compared with the energy removed from the bank. No single efficiency percentage applies to every power bank, cable, device or charging condition.

Step 1: check the bank’s model-specific output rating

Look at the label, manual or official specifications for one of these figures:

  • Rated output capacity, usually stated in mAh at a specified output voltage.
  • Usable or rated output energy in Wh.
  • A manufacturer efficiency or charge example tied to a named bank and device.

Use a stated Wh or rated-output figure in preference to calculating from the headline 25,000mAh number. A rated output figure already reflects the manufacturer’s definition of what can be delivered under its test conditions. Keep the voltage and conditions attached to the number; 25,000mAh at the cells is not interchangeable with 25,000mAh at 5V.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the documentation gives only the 25,000mAh cell rating, continue with the transparent 3.7V assumption below and label the result as an estimate. Verify that the particular model actually uses that nominal cell voltage before treating the calculation as model-specific.

Step 2: convert the 25,000mAh rating to nominal watt-hours

With the stated assumption of 3.7V nominal cells:

25,000mAh ÷ 1,000 = 25Ah
25Ah × 3.7V = 92.5Wh

So the bank stores approximately 92.5Wh nominally under that assumption. “Nominal” describes the cell rating used for the calculation; it is not the energy guaranteed at the USB port.

You can also express that same theoretical energy at 5V:

92.5Wh ÷ 5V = 18.5Ah = 18,500mAh at 5V

The 18,500mAh figure is a voltage-conversion comparison before losses. It is not a promise that a device will receive 18,500mAh. The converter and charging path make the delivered amount lower.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 3: find the device battery’s energy

Use the battery’s watt-hour rating when the manufacturer provides it. If the device lists only mAh, find the voltage associated with that rating and convert it:

Device Wh = (device mAh ÷ 1,000) × device battery voltage

Do not divide the bank’s 25,000mAh by the device’s mAh unless both ratings refer to the same voltage basis and you have accounted for conversion losses. In most phone-and-power-bank calculations, they do not.

For a laptop, tablet or other device with a removable or published battery pack, use the pack’s stated Wh directly. For a phone whose documentation lists only capacity in mAh, record the voltage used for that specification before doing the conversion. If the manufacturer does not publish voltage or Wh, the result should remain a range or an explicitly qualified estimate rather than an exact count.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: determine usable bank energy

Replace the nominal 92.5Wh with the bank’s rated output energy whenever the manufacturer publishes it. Call that value U. Then call the device battery energy B:

Full-equivalent charges = U ÷ B

If no rated-output or efficiency figure exists, you can show the nominal-energy upper bound and explain that actual delivered energy will be lower. A more honest presentation is a clearly labeled range based on a conservative and an optimistic assumption that you identify. Do not attach a universal percentage to every bank; the cited manufacturer explanations describe why losses occur but do not establish one efficiency value that applies across models.

The calculation estimates energy transferred into the device battery. It does not count energy that remains in the bank, is lost as heat, or is consumed by the device while it is operating during the charge.

Step 5: interpret the result as full-equivalent charges

Suppose your documented usable output is U Wh and your device battery is B Wh. The quotient is an energy ratio, not a schedule. A quotient below 1 indicates that the bank cannot supply one complete battery equivalent under those conditions. A quotient of 1.8 indicates one full equivalent and most of a second. Round only at the end, and keep the unrounded value in your notes so that the rounding does not imply false precision.

Initial state of charge changes what you observe. Connecting a phone at 40% and disconnecting it at 90% is a 50-percentage-point top-up, not a full cycle. Several such top-ups can add up to one full-equivalent charge, but the battery percentage shown by the phone is not a direct measurement of energy taken from the bank.

Worked calculation frameworks

When the manufacturer publishes rated output in Wh

Assume the bank documentation states a rated output of U Wh and the device documentation states B Wh. Substitute those two model-specific values:

  1. Write down the bank’s rated output energy, including its stated output voltage or test condition.
  2. Write down the device battery’s Wh rating.
  3. Divide the bank value by the device value: U ÷ B.
  4. Describe the result as full-equivalent charges under those conditions.

This is the preferred method because both sides of the comparison use energy units and the bank’s stated output has already been defined by its maker.

When only the 25,000mAh cell rating is available

State the assumption in the calculation itself:

  1. Convert the bank rating: 25,000mAh ÷ 1,000 × 3.7V = 92.5Wh nominal.
  2. Convert the device rating to Wh if it is listed in mAh.
  3. Explain that 92.5Wh is before voltage-conversion and charging losses.
  4. Use a clearly labeled estimate or range for the delivered energy, rather than presenting 92.5Wh ÷ B as the number of guaranteed charges.

The arithmetic is transparent, but the uncertainty is real: a different cell voltage, output mode, cable, temperature or charging profile changes the usable result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Illustrative arithmetic with variables

If a documented output value is 70Wh and a device battery is 14Wh, the energy ratio is 70 ÷ 14 = 5 full equivalents before considering any additional loss not already included in the 70Wh figure. This is a mathematical illustration of the method, not a charge claim for an unspecified bank or device. Replace both numbers with the values in your own documentation.

What can change the number you actually see

  • Remaining bank charge: The count depends on how full the bank is when you start. A partially charged bank cannot deliver its full rated output.
  • Device battery capacity: A larger battery requires more Wh for one equivalent charge than a smaller battery.
  • Output mode: Different USB voltages and power-delivery modes change the conversion path and the applicable rated-output figure.
  • Cable quality and resistance: The cable is part of the charging path; losses and poor connections reduce energy reaching the device.
  • Charging environment: Temperature and the surrounding charging conditions affect the observed count.
  • Device use during charging: A phone running a display, radio or processor consumes some incoming power, so less of the bank’s output becomes stored battery energy.
  • Charging behavior near full: A device does not necessarily accept power at the same rate throughout a charge, particularly as it approaches full.
  • Starting state of charge: A top-up from a partly charged battery should not be counted as a complete cycle.

Huawei lists remaining bank charge, device battery capacity, cable quality and charging environment among the factors affecting charge count in its support article, “How many times can a HUAWEI power bank charge a phone?” Those factors explain why two people can use the same nominal bank rating and observe different totals.

How manufacturer examples should be used

A named bank-and-device example is useful evidence only for that pair. Xiaomi’s Xiaomi/REDMI Power Bank FAQ provides rated output capacities and example charges for specified Xiaomi or Redmi banks and phones, then attributes the lower output rating to conversion losses. Those examples demonstrate the method; they are not a universal charge statistic for every 25,000mAh bank or every phone.

Huawei provides a calculation for its own products. Treat that formula as manufacturer-specific unless another maker publishes equivalent definitions and test conditions. TP-Link’s 3.7V-to-5V example and Anker’s internal-cell explanation establish why the ratings change with voltage, but neither supplies a universal percentage that can be applied to all models.

No independent population statistic establishes one charge count for all 25,000mAh power banks. The only fixed numerical conversion here is the stated assumption that 25,000mAh at 3.7V equals 92.5Wh nominally.

Comparing 25,000mAh banks without being misled by the label

When choosing between models, compare the figures that describe delivered energy and charging capability:

Comparison item What to check Why it matters
Stated energy Wh value and the conditions attached to it Wh keeps the voltage basis visible and allows a direct comparison with a device battery.
Rated output capacity Output mAh at its specified voltage This is closer to what the device can receive than the internal-cell headline rating.
Output voltage and power Supported USB voltage and wattage modes Voltage conversion and charging mode affect usable energy and compatibility.
Model-specific examples Named bank-and-device charge examples from the maker They show the maker’s test definition without pretending the result applies to every setup.

A bank with a lower advertised mAh number can be the better match if its documentation provides higher rated output energy or a mode suited to your device. Conversely, two banks both labeled 25,000mAh can produce different observed counts because their cells, electronics and output specifications differ.

A practical worksheet

Record these values before calculating:

  • Bank model and the exact 25,000mAh label.
  • Cell voltage used for the label, if published; otherwise mark 3.7V as an assumption.
  • Bank rated output capacity or output Wh, including output voltage.
  • Device model and battery Wh, or battery mAh plus its voltage.
  • Starting percentage of the bank and device.
  • Output port and cable used.
  • Whether the device was being used during charging and the surrounding conditions.

Then show the units beside every step. For example, write 25Ah × 3.7V = 92.5Wh, not just “92.5,” and write U Wh ÷ B Wh before rounding. This makes it clear whether you accidentally divided unlike ratings.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Dividing 25,000 by the phone’s mAh

Why it fails: The bank’s headline rating refers to its internal cells, while the phone is charged through a higher-voltage output path.

Correction: Convert both sides to Wh, then use the bank’s rated output energy or a qualified estimate.

Calling 18,500mAh the delivered output

Why it fails: 18,500mAh is the theoretical 5V equivalent of 92.5Wh before conversion losses.

Correction: Label it as a theoretical voltage conversion and expect less energy at the device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Applying one efficiency percentage to every bank

Why it fails: Efficiency depends on the bank, output mode, load, cable and conditions.

Counting top-ups as full charges

Why it fails: A partial battery refill is only a fraction of a full-equivalent charge.

Correction: Add energy-equivalent top-ups or report the result as full-equivalent charges.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Quoting a maker’s phone example as a general rule

Why it fails: The example uses a named bank, device and test definition.

Correction: Keep the example tied to those models and calculate separately for your own equipment.

When a measured result is worth checking

If the estimate and your experience differ substantially, first check that you used the bank’s output rating rather than its internal-cell rating. Confirm the device’s battery voltage and Wh conversion, start with a fully charged bank, use the same port and cable, and note whether the device was active during charging.

A USB power meter can help you observe energy at the output, but a meter reading is still tied to the port, cable, load and test conditions. It does not turn a single observation into a universal efficiency figure. Use it to diagnose your setup, while keeping the manufacturer’s rated output and the Wh calculation as the basis for comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final method

  1. Find the bank’s rated output Wh or rated output mAh at a stated voltage.
  2. If only 25,000mAh is published, calculate 92.5Wh using the explicit 3.7V nominal-cell assumption.
  3. Find the device battery’s Wh, or convert its mAh using its battery voltage.
  4. Divide usable bank Wh by device Wh.
  5. Report the quotient as full-equivalent charges and state the bank, device, cable, starting charge and conditions that qualify it.

The reliable answer is therefore not a single number attached to “25,000mAh.” It is an energy comparison for one documented bank-and-device pair. The 92.5Wh figure is a useful nominal starting point under the 3.7V assumption, while the bank’s rated output and the charging conditions determine how much of that energy your device actually stores.
