Estimate Claude API spending by request type: forecast input and output tokens separately, apply the selected model’s current rates and any relevant pricing modifiers, then multiply by expected request volume. Compare the result with the startup credits actually available in your Claude Console account and their expiry date. This gives you a workload-based budget—not a guarantee of what you will spend.
What determines Claude API cost?
Claude API charges depend on the model, the number of input and output tokens, and any applicable options or tools. Anthropic lists rates per million tokens, with separate rates for input and output. Check the live Anthropic pricing page for the model you plan to use: rates and model availability can change.
Input includes more than the latest user message. Depending on your integration, it can include system instructions, conversation history, retrieved documents, tool definitions, and tool results. Output is the content Claude generates. Include both in your forecast.

How to estimate the cost of your workload
1. Separate requests into classes
Do not treat every API call as identical if your application has meaningfully different workloads. You might estimate short classification requests, user-facing responses, and retrieval-augmented requests with substantial context separately. For each class, record expected calls per day or month, average input tokens, average output tokens, and a reasonable allowance for peaks or retries.

2. Estimate tokens for each class
Use representative prompts and expected responses to measure token counts when possible. As a rough English-language shortcut, Anthropic says to allow about four characters or 0.75 words per token. This is only a planning heuristic: tokenization varies with language and content, so it is not an exact conversion.
Include the full content sent and received in the relevant totals. A long system prompt, retained conversation history, retrieved passages, or tool schema can make input much larger than the user’s message alone.

3. Apply the current rates and relevant modifiers
For each request class, use this calculation:
Estimated cost per request = (input tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × input rate) + (output tokens ÷ 1,000,000 × output rate) + applicable cache, tool, or other charges
Then multiply the per-request estimate by the expected call volume for that class and add the classes together. Use rates from the live pricing page rather than relying on an old example or a remembered price.

- Prompt caching: If your application uses caching, account for cache writes and reads using the current pricing rules.
- Batch API: For eligible asynchronous work, check the current Batch API rates and use them only if that execution pattern fits your application.
- Long context: If requests may cross a model’s long-context threshold, check how that model’s pricing handles those requests.
- Server-side tools: Add any tool-specific charges that apply. Tool inputs and results may also consume ordinary tokens.
4. Build low, expected, and high scenarios
Scale each request-class estimate to your planned period, such as a month. Create scenarios by varying call volume and token lengths—for example, fewer or shorter requests in a low case and more or longer requests in a high case. These are your workload assumptions, not Anthropic benchmarks. Keep retries or traffic peaks visible in the assumptions rather than hiding them in an unexplained cushion.
5. Compare the forecast with your actual credits
Anthropic’s Claude Startups page describes an offer of $1,000 in API credits for approved companies, with credits expiring six months after they are granted. Approval and the award are not automatic: the Claude Startups page describes the offer, while the Startup Program Official Terms say Anthropic considers factors such as traction, funding, and Claude integration and usage, and determines eligibility at its discretion.

Use the amount and expiry shown for your organization, not the published offer alone. Confirm that credits were granted, check their balance and expiration in Claude Console, and compare those account details with your forecast period. Run representative requests and inspect their actual token usage and billed costs. Update your request-class averages with those observations, then recalculate the scenarios. Claude’s platform documentation describes usage and cost tracking; the API credits documentation also explains how to view credit information and distinguishes first-party API credits from other billing routes.

Do Claude startup credits cover every way of using Claude?
No. Anthropic says its startup API credits apply to the first-party Claude API through Claude Console. They do not apply to Claude usage billed through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI, or other third-party platforms. If your application uses one of those routes, estimate charges and credits under that provider’s own current billing terms; do not subtract Anthropic startup credits from those costs.
How much does Claude API cost, and how long will startup credits last?
There is no single useful total without a model, request volume, token profile, and billing route. To answer “How much does Claude API cost?” for your application, calculate each request class using current input and output rates and include only the pricing modifiers you actually use. To estimate “How long will my Claude startup credits last?”, divide your available balance by forecast spend over time, then verify the result against real Console usage and the credit’s account-specific expiry. A promotional credit amount alone cannot determine duration.
What to compare before choosing a setup
If you have genuine alternatives, compare them against the same representative workload rather than token price alone. Consider the model’s input and output rates alongside task quality and latency; compare uncached with cached requests, synchronous with batch-eligible work, and ordinary with long-context requests where relevant. Also account for whether you will use the first-party API or a cloud provider’s separate billing route, since Anthropic startup credits do not transfer to Bedrock or Vertex AI.
