There is no universal backup-power figure for an AI data center. Estimate it by defining which loads must remain energized, totaling their peak demand and planned growth, and checking that the UPS, generator, and distribution paths can carry those loads through the failures and maintenance events the design must withstand. Keep the UPS-protected load separate from the wider emergency-power load: include cooling and other facility systems in generator planning only when they are inside the emergency-power boundary.

What does “backup power” mean in your estimate?

A backup-power number is meaningful only when its boundary is clear. It might describe the IT load protected by the UPS, the UPS output capacity, the loads served by generators, or the full facility demand on emergency power. These are related figures, but they are not interchangeable.

  • UPS-protected load: the equipment that must ride through an interruption and the transition to another power source.
  • Generator load: the equipment that the site intends to supply from emergency generation, including selected IT, cooling, and auxiliary loads.
  • Total facility emergency load: all loads within the defined emergency-power boundary, not necessarily every load in the building.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2024 Best Practices Guide for Energy-Efficient Data Center Design recommends evaluating which equipment needs UPS service. It notes that the protected share of IT load can differ by facility type; for example, a scientific-computing facility may protect a smaller percentage of IT load than a financial institution. Schneider Electric’s data-center power-planning material includes IT, cooling, lighting, and backup in total electrical-capacity calculations. Neither point means every facility should use the same boundary.

How do you build the load estimate?

1. Define the deployment and growth case

Record the planned deployment phase, equipment population, expected peak demand, and growth allowance. Consider both the initial installation and later buildout, as well as how the system will operate at partial load. An average-utilization snapshot alone is not a sound basis for sizing a power path that must support peak demand.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Inventory the loads inside each boundary

List the IT equipment that must receive UPS power, such as GPU servers, networking, and storage. Separately identify the mechanical and auxiliary systems that must run on generator power. Cooling belongs in that generator estimate when the emergency-power design requires cooling to continue; it does not automatically belong in a UPS estimate that protects only selected IT equipment.

Do not multiply the protected IT load by PUE as a shortcut for UPS sizing. PUE is a facility-level measure, not a substitute for identifying which individual loads are actually connected to the UPS. For generator planning, include the cooling and auxiliary demand that falls within the defined emergency boundary.

3. Use equipment-specific peak input data

Use the manufacturer’s electrical specifications for the actual server, rack, network, and storage configuration, and account for the planned population. Confirm what each specification describes: a component, a rack, or an entire system, and whether the figure is a peak input requirement or another rating. A power figure for one GPU system should not be generalized to other AI hardware or deployments.

NVIDIA’s DGX SuperPOD DGX H100 electrical specification illustrates why rack-level paths matter: in its specified design, each of three required rack power input paths must support half of the expected rack peak power. That is a requirement for that documented DGX H100 configuration, not a general AI data-center sizing rule.

How should UPS and generator capacity be treated separately?

UPS: size for the protected load and surviving paths

Determine which critical loads need UPS support, then check that the UPS arrangement can serve them under the faults and maintenance conditions the design must tolerate. The UPS role is to support the critical load through interruptions and power-source transfer events. Its required capacity depends on the protected boundary and the selected topology—not on the total facility load by default.

Check the electrical ratings relevant to the actual equipment and distribution design, including kW, kVA, power factor, phase balance, and manufacturer limits. A kW total alone does not establish that a UPS or circuit is suitable.

Generators: size for the emergency-power boundary

First decide which loads must be supplied by generators. Then evaluate the actual generator and transfer arrangement against that load and the site’s selected topology. Generator sizing and UPS sizing answer different questions: the generator serves the emergency-power scope, while the UPS serves its defined protected load during interruptions and transitions.

The cited design guidance does not establish one universal generator multiplier, transfer time, or runtime target. Those values depend on the project’s equipment, operating requirements, and site design. An arbitrary percentage applied to IT load cannot replace an equipment-based engineering study.

How does redundancy change the estimate?

State the event the system must survive: a component fault, scheduled maintenance, or loss of an upstream power path. Trace the route from utility and generator through switchgear, UPS, floor distribution, and rack distribution. For each required failure or maintenance case, establish how much load every remaining path must carry and look for shared upstream components that could defeat apparent redundancy.

NVIDIA’s DGX H100 documentation provides a specific example of this distinction. In its typical N+1 arrangement, two of three rack paths can converge at an upstream UPS; a failure at that UPS can still stop the system. Its enhanced N+1 design uses three discrete UPS paths. These are topology details for the documented system, not a prescription for every AI facility.

NVIDIA also states that failure of a single system in a multi-node AI workload can stop the entire job across all systems, and notes checkpoint recovery as an availability consideration. A power design therefore needs to be evaluated against the workload’s failure consequences as well as electrical capacity.

How should phased deployment and efficiency affect the design?

A system sized only for the eventual full buildout may operate at a low load factor during early deployment. The Department of Energy advises considering part-load operation and describes examples in which modular UPS configuration affects operating load factor and efficiency. Compare the expected operating stages, not just the final capacity, when choosing a UPS arrangement.

The Department of Energy’s 2024 guide reports that efficiency for double-conversion UPS systems—the most commonly used data-center type—improved from 85% to 90% in the 1990s to 95% or higher in 2023. Those are guide-reported historical and current figures, not a guarantee for any specific unit. It also gives an illustrative 100-kW-load scenario: a 10-percentage-point increase in UPS load factor together with a 1.2% efficiency increase can result in approximately 13,000 kWh of annual savings. That example is tied to those stated assumptions and should not be treated as a universal savings estimate.

When comparing arrangements, assess the protected-load boundary, peak and growth allowance, failure and maintenance cases, independence of power paths, generator and transfer scheme, and expected operating load factor. Also consider footprint and the complexity of expanding capacity in phases.

How do you verify an estimate before deployment?

  1. Document the design case. Record the deployment phase, equipment population, peak-load basis, growth allowance, and operating stages.
  2. Draw the load boundaries. Identify the UPS-protected equipment and the IT, cooling, and auxiliary loads that must remain on emergency generation.
  3. Trace each power path. Map the utility, generator, UPS, switchgear, floor PDU, and rack PDU connections. Mark shared components and test the defined fault and maintenance cases against the surviving paths.
  4. Check equipment and circuit limits. Verify the failover load, kW and kVA requirements, power factor, phase balance, and manufacturer ratings at each circuit and upstream junction.
  5. Review transfers and staged operation. Check the site’s transfer sequence and the expected UPS operating load across deployment phases; do not assume a generic transfer time or runtime.
  6. Have qualified facilities and electrical professionals validate the design. NVIDIA specifically calls for a qualified facilities representative to verify supplied kVA and test rack power paths before deployment of the referenced DGX H100 system.

This method produces a planning estimate, not a project design or compliance determination. Without the project’s actual IT load, cooling duty, required autonomy, jurisdiction, fuel plan, generator step-load data, and selected redundancy tier, it cannot support a trustworthy kW/kVA recommendation, battery capacity, generator count, or code-compliance conclusion. ASHRAE’s AI Data Center Energy Performance Framework identifies resilience as a design topic and points to related NEMA publications on UPS, switchgear, and energy storage; project-specific requirements still need to be established for the site.
