Estimate a lunar rover’s traverse time by dividing the distance along the traversable route by an effective operational traverse rate, then adding only the stops that rate does not already include:

elapsed time ≈ route distance ÷ operational rate + uncounted stop time

For rough ground, a single optimistic speed is misleading. Build the estimate by route segment, account for detours, slope, slip, soil, visibility, lighting and driving mode, and label every speed with the rover and mission conditions that produced it.

What the estimate is actually measuring

A travel-time estimate can describe several different things: wheel-rotation time, movement between waypoints, or elapsed mission time from departure to arrival. Those are not interchangeable. A rover may move at a useful speed for a short interval but spend much of the traverse localizing, imaging hazards, communicating, conducting science or waiting for a safe lighting condition.

For planning, use the rate that best represents progress during the planned operation. NASA’s Endurance study, for example, lists a mechanical maximum separately from average daytime and nighttime traverse rates. The averages include some engineering activity, so dividing by the mechanical maximum would understate elapsed time.

The most transparent general model is:

total time ≈ Σ(distance of segment ÷ rate for that segment) + stop time not included in those rates

This is a planning framework, not a universal NASA equation. Its value is that every assumption—distance, rate, terrain and pauses—can be inspected and changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 1: Measure the route the rover can actually drive

Use traversable path length, not straight-line distance

Measure the path through the hazard map or planned waypoint sequence. A straight line between two points ignores craters, rocks, slopes, boulder fields, soft soil and no-go areas. On the Moon, a route that looks short on a map can become substantially longer after safe corridors are selected.

The Endurance Lunar South Pole–Aitken Basin study illustrates the effect. Its northern route is listed as 1,750 km nominally but 2,050 km when terrain tortuosity is included. The southern route changes from 2,000 km nominally to 2,350 km actual. Those are study-specific routes, not correction factors that can be applied to every mission.

Endurance study route Nominal distance Actual route distance Increase caused by route tortuosity
Northern 1,750 km 2,050 km 300 km
Southern 2,000 km 2,350 km 350 km

For your own estimate, calculate route distance after preliminary hazard avoidance, then update it as terrain data or navigation constraints improve. If the only available value is a straight-line distance, mark the result as a lower bound rather than presenting it as a traverse prediction.

Break a long route into meaningful segments

Create a new segment whenever the operating conditions change materially: a flat plain versus a slope, a daylight corridor versus a shadowed section, direct waypoint driving versus prospecting, or firm soil versus a suspected fluffy deposit. Segmenting prevents a fast section from hiding a slow, risky one.

Step 2: Choose an operational traverse rate

Prefer mission averages over mechanical maximums

A rover’s wheel or motor speed describes what its mechanism can do under a particular condition. It does not tell you how quickly the vehicle will complete a route with navigation, hazard checks and science activity. Use an observed or planned operational average when one is available, and verify whether the average already includes stops.

The following figures are useful examples only; they belong to different vehicles, missions and operating definitions.

NASA Endurance study (2023) 0.35 km/h nighttime average Planning rate including localization stops and long-exposure imaging Use for the study’s nighttime scenario, not as a universal lunar-night speed
NASA Endurance study (2023) 1 km/h maximum wheel speed Mechanical maximum, not mission-average progress Do not substitute for an operational rate
NASA VIPER operations page (accessed 2026) About 0.72 km/h generally; about 0.4 km/h while prospecting Rounded operating speeds for VIPER modes Keep the direct-driving and prospecting modes separate
NASA VIPER operations page (accessed 2026) 10–20 cm/s waypoint driving; 5–10 cm/s science prospecting Mode-specific speed ranges Convert units consistently before calculating
Apollo Lunar Roving Vehicle performance report About 13 km/h maximum on a level surface; up to about 10 km/h directly upslope on soft material Historical crewed-vehicle performance under stated conditions Context for Apollo, not a robotic-rover average
NASA/JPL ERNEST field test (2026) 16 miles (26 km) in 37 hours California terrestrial mobility and autonomy test Not a lunar speed benchmark

VIPER’s centimeter-per-second figures and rounded kilometer-per-hour figures describe the same operating modes at different precision. For example, 10–20 cm/s corresponds to roughly 0.36–0.72 km/h, while 5–10 cm/s corresponds to roughly 0.18–0.36 km/h. Do not blend the ranges with the rounded values unless you state which one is being used.

Check what a published average includes

An average may include localization, hazard assessment, imaging or other engineering pauses. If so, adding those pauses a second time double-counts them. Conversely, a wheel-speed or short test measurement may exclude nearly every operational delay; in that case, separate stop allowances are required.

Step 3: Adjust for rough-terrain conditions

Slope, traction and slip

Grade changes the rate in two ways. Climbing can demand more traction and power, while descending or traversing across a slope can increase slip or require conservative control. NASA’s VIPER description says the rover can generally drive on slopes up to 15 degrees; steeper slopes may be attempted but bring a greater likelihood of slipping and slower progress. Treat 15 degrees as a capability reference for that rover, not as a speed promise or a safe limit for another vehicle.

The Endurance study tabulates nominal sinkage and estimated slope-related slip. If your terrain model provides a slip fraction, convert commanded distance into expected useful distance. A simple planning representation is:

effective forward distance = commanded wheel distance × (1 − slip fraction)

Use that relationship only when the slip estimate is defined consistently; otherwise, lower the operational rate and document why.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Soil, sinkage and wheel interaction

Soft or fluffy regolith can allow wheels to sink, reducing forward progress and increasing energy use. A rover may respond by changing its driving style, but the resulting speed is terrain-specific. Do not transfer a rate measured on firm ground to a deposit whose bearing strength is unknown. Include a slower segment rate or a contingency allowance for wheel extrication and route redesign when sinkage is a serious possibility.

Rocks, craters and route tortuosity

Hazards lengthen the route and force pauses for perception and path planning. Apollo crews described small, hummocky craters as a major traverse problem because avoiding them helped prevent loss of controllability and suspension bottoming. That observation explains why crater-rich terrain can cost time even when the rover’s nominal speed is unchanged.

Visibility and lighting

Low visibility can hide small craters and reduce the speed at which a crewed or autonomous rover can safely proceed. At the lunar poles, long shadows and changing illumination also affect which slopes and hazards can be seen. VIPER waypoint planning considers lighting and safe access, while the Endurance study uses different average rates for daytime and nighttime conditions. Assign separate rates or route choices to illuminated and shadowed segments instead of applying one global value.

Science mode versus transit mode

A rover driving directly to a waypoint is not performing the same task as a rover prospecting for resources. VIPER’s rounded figures illustrate the distinction: about 0.72 km/h for general driving and about 0.4 km/h when prospecting. Prospecting can also add pauses for measurements, instrument placement and data handling. Select the mode that matches the mission objective before calculating distance divided by speed.

Step 4: Account for stops exactly once

List every pause that is not already embedded in the chosen rate. Typical categories include:

  • localization and map updates;
  • hazard imaging or autonomous perception;
  • communications windows and command handovers;
  • instrument deployment, sampling or prospecting measurements;
  • charging or power-management holds;
  • thermal or lighting constraints; and
  • recovery from wheel slip, sinkage or a blocked path.

For each category, record either a duration per event or a rate such as minutes per kilometer. Then add it once. If a mission-average rate already includes localization stops, do not add a second localization allowance. The Endurance daytime average explicitly includes engineering stops for localization, and its nighttime average also includes long-exposure imaging.

Worked calculations

Single-segment calculation

Suppose a planned segment is 12 km and the selected operational rate is 0.4 km/h. The movement portion is:

12 km ÷ 0.4 km/h = 30 hours

If the 0.4 km/h figure excludes a two-hour science session and a one-hour communications hold, the elapsed estimate is 33 hours. If those activities are already represented in the average, the estimate remains 30 hours. The arithmetic is simple; the definition of the rate determines whether the answer is useful.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Multi-segment calculation

Assume a route contains 8 km of firm, illuminated plain at 0.65 km/h, 3 km of cratered terrain at 0.35 km/h, and 1 km of prospecting at 0.4 km/h. The segment calculation is:

(8 ÷ 0.65) + (3 ÷ 0.35) + (1 ÷ 0.4) = 12.31 + 8.57 + 2.5 ≈ 23.38 hours

If the rates already include navigation and localization but exclude a four-hour instrument session, the elapsed estimate becomes about 27.38 hours. This example demonstrates why averaging the three speeds first can hide the cratered section; the slow segment contributes disproportionately to total time.

Applying Endurance study figures carefully

Using the Endurance study’s 2,050 km actual northern route and its 0.65 km/h daytime planning rate gives approximately 3,154 hours of movement-rate time:

2,050 ÷ 0.65 ≈ 3,154 hours

This is a what-if calculation under the study’s daytime-rate assumption, not a prediction of calendar mission duration. A route that includes nighttime operation cannot be represented by that number alone; use the study’s 0.35 km/h nighttime rate for nighttime segments and model the day/night schedule separately. The same method applied to the 2,350 km actual southern route at 0.65 km/h yields about 3,615 hours, again only as a daytime-rate scenario.

How to compare two conflicting travel-time estimates

When published or internally generated answers disagree, compare their assumptions before comparing the final hours.

Axis Questions to ask
Distance Is it straight-line, nominal map distance or actual traversable route distance? Are crater and rock detours included?
Rover and rate Is the number a mechanical maximum, a short observed speed or an operational average? Does it apply to this rover?
Terrain What slope, soil strength, sinkage, rock density and slip assumptions were used?
Operations Are localization, imaging, prospecting, communication and recovery pauses inside the rate or added separately?
Lighting and visibility Does the estimate distinguish daylight, darkness, long shadows or restricted views?
Mode Is the rover transiting, prospecting, sampling or repeatedly stopping at science targets?

An estimate that uses a longer route and a slower, stop-inclusive rate may be more realistic than a shorter estimate based on a vehicle’s headline maximum speed.

Build a reusable planning worksheet

For every segment, capture the following fields:

Field Entry to record
Segment identifier Waypoint pair or map region
Route distance Distance along the selected safe corridor, in one unit
Terrain class Plain, slope, crater field, soft soil, shadowed area or another defined class
Operating mode Transit, waypoint driving, prospecting, sampling or recovery
Operational rate Source, date, rover and whether stops are included
Uncounted stops Events and durations not represented in the rate
Confidence or range Best case, nominal case and conservative case where data justify them
  1. Trace the route and total each segment’s traversable distance.
  2. Assign a rate from a mission plan or a vehicle-specific operational measurement.
  3. Mark which engineering and science activities are already included.
  4. Compute each segment’s duration with consistent units.
  5. Add only the excluded stops and recovery allowances.
  6. Recalculate when a hazard map, lighting forecast or rover mode changes.

Use ranges when the inputs are uncertain

Rough-terrain estimates are often more honest as scenarios than as a single decimal. Prepare at least a nominal and conservative case when route tortuosity, slip or stop duration is uncertain. For example, keep the same route but use a faster rate for firm illuminated ground and a slower rate for cratered or shadowed terrain. Separately vary the route length if a hazard map could force additional detours.

Do not present a range as a statistical confidence interval unless the underlying measurements support one. A best-case/nominal/conservative table is a set of planning assumptions, not a probability forecast.

Common mistakes and corrections

Dividing by the rover’s top speed

Problem: A mechanical maximum assumes continuous motion under favorable conditions.

Correction: Use a mission-average operational rate and state whether it includes stops.

Using endpoint distance

Problem: Straight-line distance ignores avoidance maneuvers.

Correction: Label each number with its vehicle, mode, source date and conditions; use it as an analogy only when the distinction is explicit.

Treating a capability limit as a speed

Correction: Use slope limits to test feasibility, then select a rate supported by the actual terrain and operating mode.

Using a terrestrial test as a lunar benchmark

Problem: A field-trial average is transferred to the Moon.

Correction: Keep NASA/JPL’s 2026 ERNEST result—26 km in 37 hours in California—as evidence of a terrestrial mobility and autonomy test, not a lunar traverse rate.

Historical context: why Apollo speeds need careful labeling

The Apollo Lunar Roving Vehicle reached about 13 km/h on a level surface and maintained up to about 10 km/h while driving directly upslope on soft surface material, according to NASA’s performance report. Those figures describe a crewed, historically specific vehicle under stated conditions. They are useful for understanding what the LRV achieved, but they should not be used as an average for a modern autonomous rover crossing rough polar terrain.

The same report’s observation about hummocky craters is operationally important: avoiding small hazards can protect controllability and suspension, but the avoidance path costs distance and time. That is precisely why route geometry and hazard density belong in the estimate alongside speed.

Final pre-publication checklist for an estimate

  • Is the distance measured along the planned traversable route?
  • Are detours, craters, rocks and slope constraints represented?
  • Is the rate an operational average rather than a mechanical maximum?
  • Does the rate apply to the named rover and driving mode?
  • Are slope, slip, sinkage, soil, visibility and lighting reflected in the rate or route?
  • Are transit and prospecting treated as different modes where appropriate?
  • Are localization, imaging, communication, science and recovery pauses counted once?
  • Are day and night segments separated when their rates differ?
  • Does every published number retain its vehicle, date and condition?
  • Would a nominal and conservative scenario better communicate uncertainty?
