To estimate a car’s on-road price in India, start with the dealer’s current ex-showroom quote, then add the road tax and registration charges for the state or Union Territory where the car will be registered, an actual insurance quote, and any optional products or other itemized charges you choose. Do not add GST on top of a current ex-showroom price unless the dealer explicitly says that price excludes it: vehicle GST is ordinarily already reflected in that figure.
Use this formula to estimate the on-road price
Estimated on-road price = current ex-showroom quote + local road tax + registration and number-plate charges + insurance quote + chosen optional add-ons and other itemized charges.
This is a practical way to build and check a quote, not a single nationwide statutory equation. The amounts depend on where the car is registered, the vehicle and transaction, the policy selected, and what the dealer has included. Request a written, itemized quote rather than applying a standard percentage uplift to the ex-showroom price.
| Quote component | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Ex-showroom price | The quoted price for the exact make, model and variant, including any discount treatment. Ordinarily, vehicle GST is already reflected in this price. |
| Road tax | The amount and calculation basis prescribed for the registration state or Union Territory and the particular vehicle. |
| Registration and plates | Registration charges and number-plate charges, listed separately where applicable. |
| Insurance | A live premium for the stated insurer, coverage and add-ons—not an assumed percentage of the car price. |
| Other line items | Financing-related charges, accessories, warranties, service packages or other products, with optional items clearly identified. |
For the total to be useful, it must refer to one transaction: the same registration jurisdiction, vehicle variant, quote date and chosen insurance and add-ons. A total that combines different assumptions is not a reliable estimate.

There is no reliable one-size-fits-all percentage to add to the ex-showroom price. The local tax basis, applicable fees, discount, insurance policy and chosen extras all affect the result. Two buyers considering the same model can therefore have different on-road totals, particularly if they register in different jurisdictions or choose different insurance and add-ons. Build the estimate from the actual line items rather than using an assumed “typical” uplift.
Why GST is usually not another amount to add
“Ex-showroom” is the key starting point. In an ordinary dealer quote, GST on the vehicle has already been included in the ex-showroom price. Adding a GST percentage to that quoted price would count the tax again and overstate the amount due. Ask the dealer to confirm the price basis if the quote is ambiguous, unusually formatted, or explicitly described as tax-exclusive.
The GST rate still matters when understanding how a vehicle is classified and how its quoted vehicle price is formed. The GST Council’s 2025 FAQ described an 18% rate for qualifying small cars and 40% for mid-size and large cars and qualifying utility vehicles. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the Press Information Bureau said the rationalisation took effect on 22 September 2025. These are dated published rates, not a guarantee that no later notification has changed the treatment. Use a current quote and check applicable official notifications if the tax classification is material to the transaction.
| Category in the 2025 GST Council FAQ | Criteria described in the FAQ | GST rate stated |
|---|---|---|
| Qualifying small petrol, LPG or CNG car | Engine capacity up to 1,200 cc and length up to 4,000 mm | 18% |
| Qualifying small diesel car | Engine capacity up to 1,500 cc and length up to 4,000 mm | 18% |
| Mid-size or large car | Exceeding 1,500 cc or 4,000 mm, as described by the FAQ | 40% |
| Qualifying utility vehicle | Utility vehicles meeting the FAQ’s stated criteria | 40% GST without compensation cess, as stated in the FAQ |
Check the FAQ’s exact category criteria against the particular vehicle rather than relying on labels such as “compact,” “SUV” or “small car” in advertising. A model name or marketing category alone does not establish its tax classification. The figures above describe the FAQ published in 2025; confirm the current treatment for the vehicle and transaction.
The GST category is useful context, but it is not a separate step to add another percentage to a current, tax-inclusive ex-showroom quote. If the dealer provides a price that expressly excludes GST, ask for a corrected, itemized quote showing the tax treatment and final ex-showroom amount before comparing it with other offers. This avoids mixing a tax-exclusive price with totals that already include vehicle GST.
Calculate the state or UT road tax and registration charges
Road tax and registration costs are the main reason an on-road estimate cannot be transferred unchanged from one registration jurisdiction to another. The relevant transport authority’s schedule and the vehicle’s details determine the applicable charges. The exact calculation basis may involve the sale amount, price category or other locally prescribed factors; establish it for the place where the vehicle will actually be registered.

The Meghalaya Transport Department, for example, says car road tax depends on the vehicle’s sale amount. Its published procedure also lists a registration fee, an HSRP fee and a hypothecation fee where a bank loan is involved. The page describes a one-time road tax for 10 years for a new private car, followed by tax every five years. Those are details of the Meghalaya example, not a nationwide schedule. Do not use its time period, fees or calculation as a substitute for the rules in another state or UT.

- Verify uncertain statutory amounts. Check them with the relevant transport authority if the basis, amount or applicability is unclear.
Do not assume that a tax amount is calculated on the same price basis everywhere. Ask whether the dealer has used the vehicle’s sale amount, ex-showroom amount, a locally defined value band or another prescribed basis, and check that the quote’s discount treatment is clear. The Meghalaya Transport Department’s statement that car road tax depends on the sale amount is specific to that jurisdictional example; it does not establish the calculation basis in another state or UT.
Special registration arrangements, including BH-series registration, may have separate conditions and tax rules. Do not apply an ordinary state-registration estimate to a special scheme without checking current Ministry of Road Transport and Highways or transport-authority requirements. The details in this guide do not establish the current BH-series eligibility rules or a BH-series tax formula.
Get an insurance amount that matches the cover you want
Insurance is not one fixed addition to every car’s ex-showroom price. The premium depends on the vehicle, insurer, cover selected and buyer circumstances. The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India’s policyholder guidance says individual insurers rate own-damage cover after rates are filed with the regulator. For a useful estimate, get a current quote instead of assuming a universal insurance percentage.
When comparing insurance amounts, make sure the quotes are for comparable coverage. Ask the dealer or insurer to specify the insurer, policy type, own-damage cover, third-party cover and any add-ons included in the figure. If two dealer quotes use different coverage or add-ons, the difference in insurance cost does not by itself show which dealer has the better price.

- Request a live premium for the vehicle and transaction you are pricing.
- Read the stated policy coverage and add-ons rather than comparing the premium alone.
- Check whether the dealer’s figure is an insurance quote or an amount bundled into its total.
- Ask for the policy and insurer details in writing so you can compare like with like.
For a fair comparison, first decide what coverage and add-ons you want, then request quotes on the same basis. A lower premium is not necessarily a like-for-like offer if it covers a different set of risks or includes different add-ons. The IRDAI guidance supports insurer-specific own-damage pricing; it does not provide a single premium that can be applied to every car or buyer.

Identify optional products and charges in the dealer quote
Ask the dealer to itemize anything beyond the vehicle price, local statutory charges and insurance. Possible line items include accessories, extended warranty, maintenance packages, handling or logistics, FASTag and other add-ons. Their presence on a quote does not, by itself, establish that each item is legally required or that a particular price applies across India. Confirm what each charge covers and whether it is optional for your purchase.
For each line item, ask the dealer to state the amount, what it pays for, whether it is required for registration or another stated purpose, and whether you can decline it. Do not treat a bundled total as proof that every included product is compulsory. Check the final invoice and applicable local rules when a charge is described as mandatory but the reason is not clear.
- Accessories: Request a separate list and price; distinguish items you selected from items included in a bundle.
- Extended warranty or maintenance: Ask what the product covers and whether it is optional.
- Handling or logistics: Request an explanation and a separate line item instead of accepting an unexplained bundled amount.
- FASTag and other products: Ask what is being supplied and whether it is included in the stated total.
- Financing-related fees: If the car is financed, ask whether a hypothecation or related fee applies and whether it is already counted elsewhere.
There is no verified nationwide price list for these dealer items in the figures cited here, so do not infer that the same charge or amount should appear on every quote. Keep the distinction clear between a charge prescribed by the registration authority and a product the dealer is offering. If a line is bundled with others, request the individual price and the reason for including it; that lets you decide whether to keep it and prevents accidental double-counting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBuild and check your estimate step by step
- Write down the quote date and vehicle variant. A price for a different variant or a different date may not describe the transaction you are planning.
- Record the ex-showroom amount and discounts. Ask whether the amount is the current, tax-inclusive ex-showroom quote and how any discount has been applied.
- Request the road-tax calculation for the registration location. The quote should show the location, amount and relevant basis rather than a generic estimate.
- Add registration and number-plate charges separately. Include any applicable financing-related registration charge only once.
- Obtain an insurance quote for the coverage you want. Record the insurer, cover and add-ons along with its premium.
- Review every remaining line item. Mark each accessory, warranty, service product or other charge as selected, declined or needing clarification.
- Add the amounts once. Use the stated line items, checking that no charge has been included both in a bundle and again as a separate entry.
- Ask for a revised written total if assumptions change. A change of registration location, coverage or selected add-ons can change the total.
If a dealer gives only one total, ask for a written breakdown before using it to decide whether the car fits your budget. Without the car, variant, registration state or UT, buyer circumstances, insurance coverage and date-specific dealer offer, there is no responsible single numeric example or national uplift percentage to apply.
Use the same discipline when a quote changes during negotiation. Keep the original and revised quote dates, and ask what changed: ex-showroom discount, local tax calculation, insurance, financing-related fees or selected products. A lower final number can reflect a genuine price change, but it can also reflect a different insurance policy or the removal of an item. Identify the changed line before treating the new total as comparable.
Compare two dealer quotes on the same basis
A lower headline total is not necessarily a lower price for the same purchase. Compare the individual assumptions and components before treating one quote as cheaper.

Keep petrol and diesel taxes out of the purchase total
Fuel taxes affect what you pay when buying petrol or diesel later; they are not a registration-time addition to the car’s on-road purchase price. The Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell’s state-by-state VAT table concerns petrol and diesel fuel and was last updated on 9 October 2026. Its figures should not be used as vehicle road-tax rates. Keep fuel VAT in a separate running-cost estimate if you are budgeting for ownership.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common estimating mistakes to avoid
- Adding GST again: Begin with the current ex-showroom quote and confirm its tax basis rather than adding a vehicle GST rate on top by default.
- Using another state’s road-tax figure: Use the rules for the intended registration jurisdiction; the Meghalaya example is not a national schedule.
- Assuming a standard insurance percentage: Use comparable, current insurer quotes for the coverage you want.
- Accepting an unexplained bundle: Ask for statutory charges, optional products and other line items to be identified separately.
- Counting a fee twice: Check whether a charge is already included in a bundle before adding it again.
- Confusing fuel VAT with car road tax: Fuel taxes apply to fuel purchases, not the one-time car purchase calculation.
- Comparing unlike totals: Align location, variant, discounts, insurance and selected extras before judging two quotes.
- Treating a state example as a national rule: Meghalaya’s described 10-year initial road-tax period is a local example, not a schedule to use for every state or UT.
- Using an undated rate as current: The GST rates above are described in a 2025 FAQ and took effect on 22 September 2025; check for later official changes when relevant.
What your final written quote should show
Before relying on the estimate, make sure the document identifies the registration state or UT, exact make, model and variant, quote date, ex-showroom amount and discount basis. It should separately list road tax, registration and plate charges, insurance details and premium, financing-related fees if applicable, and every optional product or other charge. Ask the dealer to clarify any unitemized amount and verify uncertain statutory charges with the relevant transport authority.
Once those details are visible, the calculation is straightforward: add the quoted ex-showroom price to the verified local charges, the insurance premium you have chosen and the optional items you have elected to buy. The result is a transaction-specific estimate—not a universal percentage that can safely be applied to every car or location.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is GST already included in the ex-showroom price?
Ordinarily, yes: GST on the vehicle is already reflected in the dealer’s current ex-showroom price. Do not add GST again unless the quote expressly says it excludes the tax. If the price basis is unclear, ask the dealer for a written, tax-inclusive ex-showroom amount and itemized total.

What GST rates did the 2025 GST Council FAQ state for cars?
The GST Council’s 2025 FAQ stated 18% for qualifying small cars: petrol, LPG or CNG cars with engine capacity up to 1,200 cc and length up to 4,000 mm, and diesel cars with capacity up to 1,500 cc and length up to 4,000 mm. It stated 40% for mid-size and large cars and qualifying utility vehicles, with qualifying utility vehicles described as attracting 40% GST without compensation cess. The rationalisation took effect on 22 September 2025. Check current official notifications and the exact vehicle classification; do not add these rates to an ex-showroom price that already includes GST.
Why can road tax and registration charges differ between quotes?
They depend on the state or UT where the car is registered, the applicable local schedule and the vehicle or transaction details. Ask for the calculation basis and separate amounts for road tax, registration and number plates. Meghalaya’s Transport Department, for example, says car road tax depends on sale amount and describes a 10-year initial period for a new private car; that is a Meghalaya example, not a nationwide rule.
Can I estimate insurance as a fixed percentage of the car price?
No single insurance percentage is supported as universal. Premiums vary with the vehicle, insurer, coverage, add-ons and buyer circumstances. IRDAI’s policyholder guidance says insurers rate own-damage cover individually after rates are filed with the regulator. Obtain current quotes and compare the same coverage and add-ons.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Are accessories, handling, warranty and FASTag charges compulsory?
Their appearance in a dealer quote does not by itself establish that they are legally required or that a particular price applies nationwide. Ask the dealer to itemize each product or charge, explain what it covers, and say whether it is optional or required for a stated purpose. Check unclear statutory amounts with the relevant transport authority and the final invoice.
Should petrol or diesel VAT be added to the car’s on-road price?
No. VAT on petrol or diesel applies when you buy fuel and belongs in a running-cost estimate, not the one-time vehicle purchase calculation. PPAC’s state-by-state VAT table concerns fuel taxes, not car road tax.
How do I compare two on-road quotes fairly?
Use the same registration state or UT, exact make, model and variant, quote date, ex-showroom price basis and discount treatment. Compare road tax, registration and plate fees, financing-related charges, and insurance with the same insurer or equivalent coverage and add-ons. List accessories, warranties and other optional products separately, and check that no amount is counted twice.
The Bottom Line
Start with a current, tax-inclusive ex-showroom quote; do not add GST again by default. Add the road tax and registration charges for the actual registration state or UT, a current insurance quote for the cover you want, and only the optional products you choose. Get every amount itemized, confirm unclear statutory charges with the relevant transport authority, and compare quotes only when their assumptions match.
