You can erase a locked Samsung Galaxy A20 from Recovery mode without entering its screen PIN, pattern, or password. The reset deletes data stored on the phone, and Android may still require the Google account previously used on it during setup. It is not a password bypass or a way to recover local data.
Before you reset the Galaxy A20
A factory reset removes personal data from the phone. Samsung warns that data not backed up elsewhere may not be recoverable after the reset. If you can still access the phone using an already-authorized method, check for backups and Samsung’s supported account-recovery options before erasing it. There is no safe reset procedure that preserves inaccessible local data.
Have the Google account previously added to the phone available. A reset performed outside Settings may trigger Factory Reset Protection (FRP), which can ask for that account during setup. Resetting the phone does not remove ownership verification. Samsung explains factory reset and FRP.

Choose a reset method

Resetting through Settings is the ordinary option when you can unlock and navigate the phone, but it does not solve a forgotten screen-lock credential. Samsung’s factory-reset instructions describe that route.

Reset the A20 from Recovery mode
Samsung Members community guidance for the Galaxy A20 describes the following sequence. Samsung’s official recovery guidance cautions that button combinations vary by device, and the official A20 manuals listed for different Android versions do not establish this exact sequence for every carrier or build. Treat it as model-specific community guidance, not a guarantee for every A20.
- Power the phone off. If it will not shut down normally, consult Samsung support for the exact SM-A205 variant rather than repeatedly trying guessed button combinations.
- Hold Volume Up and Power until the Recovery menu appears.
- Use the volume buttons to highlight Wipe data/factory reset, then press Power to select it.
- Confirm the reset if prompted. This permanently erases data stored on the phone.
- When the menu returns, highlight Reboot system now with the volume buttons and press Power.
Samsung UK’s recovery overview describes connecting a locked Galaxy phone to a computer with a USB cable before entering Recovery, but it does not establish that connection as mandatory for every A20 variant. If your variant’s official instructions call for it, use a compatible cable and follow those instructions. Samsung UK’s recovery guidance notes that hardware combinations differ.

If Recovery does not open, stop rather than cycling through speculative combinations. Samsung’s Galaxy A20 support listing includes SM-A205 variants and manuals for Android 9, 10, and 11; check the support page for your exact model and region or contact Samsung.

Erase the phone remotely with SmartThings Find

- Open SmartThings Find and sign in to the Samsung account associated with the phone.
- Select the Galaxy A20 from your devices.
- Choose Erase data and follow the confirmation prompts.
This permanently deletes the phone’s data. If the device is offline, Samsung says it will be erased the next time it comes online. The method requires Samsung-account access and does not bypass Google FRP. See Samsung’s instructions for a forgotten Galaxy screen lock.

After rebooting, follow the Android setup prompts. If FRP appears, sign in with a Google account that was previously added to the phone. If you cannot verify the account, contact Samsung support or an authorized service center. Do not rely on claims that a reset can bypass ownership verification.
