To equip an Amber in Valor Mortis, visit a Lantern, open its Amber equipment option, and select the Amber you want to slot. The number of available Amber slots grows as William levels up. If a Lantern only shows rest, level-up, and travel, you may not have reached the progression threshold that unlocks Amber equipment yet.
Equip an Amber at a Lantern
- Find and interact with a Lantern.
- Open the Amber equipment option.
- Choose an Amber from the ones you have collected and confirm the slot.
Lanterns also handle resting, leveling up, and fast travel, so the Amber menu is easy to overlook. The official Xbox Wire guide summarizes the process as: “Slot them in when you visit a lantern.”
You do not necessarily receive a full set of slots at the start. Your available capacity increases as William gains levels. The reviewed guides do not publish a universal level-by-level slot table, so there is no reliable single level at which every player should expect every slot to appear.
Why the Amber option may be missing
A common point of confusion is finding several Ambers but seeing no Amber menu at a Lantern. A Steam player described having four Ambers while Lanterns offered only rest, level-up, and travel. That situation generally indicates that the required progression threshold for an Amber slot has not been reached, rather than a problem with the Lantern itself.

- Continue progressing and check Lanterns again after William levels up.
- Use available Catalyst Clots from your inventory when you are close to the next level threshold. The official guide specifically recommends them for pushing past that threshold.
- Do not assume that collecting an Amber immediately unlocks a slot; collection and equipment capacity are separate progression systems.
Because the available sources do not establish the exact threshold or button sequence for every platform, the safest check is to revisit a Lantern after the next meaningful level increase rather than relying on an unverified level number.

Ambers are not merely stat bonuses. They are build modifiers that can change the way combat works. Some increase strength, while others add a new rule or trade-off to your playstyle.

These effects make slot selection a decision about behavior as much as power. For example, Marksman’s Bane rewards parries, Volatile End rewards accurate weak-point fire, and Butcher’s Carnage exchanges Flask safety for melee sustain.
Finding more Ambers and upgrading them
Many Ambers are hidden in optional areas, and the official guide warns that you are unlikely to find every one in a single playthrough. Exploring side paths, optional rooms, and areas that are easy to bypass is therefore important if you want a complete collection.

PowerPyx’s collectible guide, dated October 13, 2026, records 28 unique Ambers across 55 collectible locations. Duplicate pickups are useful rather than wasted: 15 Ambers can be upgraded to level 3 by collecting duplicate copies. You need one of each of the 28 unique Ambers for the Ambersmith achievement; duplicates are needed for the upgrades, not for that achievement requirement.
A practical setup strategy
Early progression
Equip the first Amber that matches the way you already fight. A player who relies on parries has an immediate reason to choose Marksman’s Bane, while a player who targets weak points may get more value from Volatile End. Do not select Butcher’s Carnage unless you are prepared to lose Ferrofluid Flask healing.

When a new slot opens
Revisit your active setup instead of automatically adding the newest Amber. Ask which encounters are causing the most trouble: ranged pressure, weak-point opportunities, or attrition during melee exchanges. An Amber that is powerful in one situation can be inefficient in another because its benefit is tied to a specific combat action.
For completion and upgrades
Track both unique names and duplicate pickups. Your first copy moves you toward the 28-unique collection goal, while later copies can raise eligible Ambers toward level 3. Since the collectible total is larger than the unique total, duplicates are an expected part of full exploration.
